(Answered) Infernos: Partial Cover & for how long?
« on: 19 January 2019, 10:19:11 »
Another weird one here:

Inferno's do not deal damage, but instead each successful hit deals 2 points of heat damage. What if the target has Partial cover? Under a normal situation, a successful hit means no location roll necessary, just apply 2 heat. But in the case of Partial Cover, would one still not need to roll location to see if the missile impacts on the cover instead of the mech?

Partial Cover (page 102 TW)
Quote
The intervening level can be a hill, a building (but not a bridge,
which does not provide partial cover), a DropShip or any combination.
Partial cover does not block LOS, but it adds a +1 modifier
to the attacker’s to-hit number. The attack is then resolved normally,
but if the hit location roll indicates a leg, the attack strikes
the cover instead. If the partial cover is a building or grounded
DropShip, the hit damages the building or DropShip; see Buildings
and Attacks by Grounded Aerospace Unit , pp. 166 and 249 respectively.
For four-legged ’Mechs, a leg hit means any leg at all, front
or rear. For further explanation, see To-Hit Modifiers, p. 106.

Also, how long does the heat Last? the wording is little vague.

Does the heat apply in the round it hit and again the following round, or only the round it hit?

From TW:
Quote
For every missile that strikes the target, increase the unit’s heat level by 2
points during the Heat Phase of the turn in which the infernos
hit (see Outside Heat Sources, p. 159). The additional Heat lasts for
only 1 turn.

and from the BattleMech Manual:
Quote
Infernos do not have a Damage Value. Instead,
each missile that strikes a ’Mech increases its heat level by 2 points
during the Heat Phase of the turn in which the missiles hit. Any
additional heat dealt by infernos lasts for only one turn.

Does this mean the heat is applied in this rounds heat phase, and again in the following heat phase and then over? Or does it last for the one heat phase only?

In the case of partial cover, you make a location roll like normal weapons hits, to determine if the inferno hits the mech or the terrain.  (As an aside, the same applies if the mech is carrying mechanized infantry or is being swarmed, to determine if the inferno hits the mech or the infantry -- it does not automatically hit both.)

The heat from an inferno missile only applies in the turn it hits.

I'll add both instances to the rewording pile for any future reprints.
