Miniatures of the Fortnight #74: AeroSpace Fighters
« on: 30 July 2019, 00:13:30 »
AeroSpace Fighters (ASFs) have been part of BattleTech as far back as the AeroTech boxed set, with its set of cardboard counters.  The rules have been revised many times over the years and... this is about the extend I know about AeroSpace Fighters.  And that there are a deceptively large number of them.  How many?  130 apparently.  Oh boy.  This is going to be a long one folks.

AeroSpace Fighter minis appear to be separated into three categories:
  • 'Mech scale
  • Micro scale: Smaller minis, presumably the AeroSpace-equivalent of BattleForce scale for 'Mechs.
  • Fleet scale stands: Possibly tands of multiple small fighters, presumably for use with BattleSpace or other aerospace games.  I don't know if there's any relation between the fleet scale stands and the micro scale versions.  The fleet stand versions all appear to be out of print.  (I presume this and this are examples of fleet scale stands.)
We can start with a special feature: the Samurai holds the distinction of being the only Unseen ASF.  Its Unseen model was released by Ral Partha as 20-710.  Like the other Unseen, it gained a Reseen version, which is listed below.

The fleet scale stands are all out of print.  Their releases were:
  • Bashkir Prime (20-163)
  • Corsair CSR-V12 (20-158)
  • Kirghiz Prime (20-164)
  • Slayer SL-15 (20-159)
  • Sparrowhawk SPR-H5 (20-152)
  • Sulla Prime (20-165)
Excluding the Unseen Samurai (That sounds like a MechWarrior drama in the FWL, doesn't it?  The Combine would never accept the idea of a samurai being anything but seen and in your face.), all of the 'Mech scale fighters are still in print, although many are archived or online-exclusives:And, finally, all of the micro scale fighters are also still in print and are on-line exclusives:There we have it.  If you have any AeroSpace Fighters painted, please post pictures.  We'd love to see them!

Thanks for reading.  Since this is a long post and I should have been in bed over an hour ago, there might be errors in the links.  If you find any, please let me know.

Our next two fortnights will be:
  • 12 Aug 2019: Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt IIC
  • 26 Aug 2019: Vixen (Incubus) and Incubus II

I only have a half dozen painted, and nothing younger than 9 years old.

Davion / Unknown - SL-25 Samurai (Unseen)

Yes the ubiquitous red Samurai from the front cover of AeroTech. I figured this post would be full of them... Anyone know what unit it is from?...

Painted in the early 90s

Stormbringers / Ground Aerowing - SL-21 Sholagar

Concept paint. Painted around 2010.

Davion / Sakhara Military Academy - F-90 Stingray

Davion / Albion Military Academy - CSR-V12 Corsair

Davion / Albion Military Academy - STU-K5 Stuka

Davion / Albion Military Academy - SPR-H5 SparrowHawk

Three Aerospace all painted in early 2010, showing the progression of my painting style.

Painted a flight with the original Draconian ASF in colors of the Nightstalkers.

Same for the original Davion ASF in colors of the 5th Crucis Lancers. I plan to do the complete 9. Crucis Lancers Aero Wing in Mechscale. So far i only have 50% finished.

There is also a complete wing for the 5th Crucis Lancers (the 10. Crucis Lancers Aero Wing) in microscale.

I also have a fair number of the micro fighters.

Here are the Centurion, Corsair and Ironsides microfighters, along with how one looks on the map with my custom map-scale merc force.

And lastly, a couple of the Kurita Micro Fighters, along with a Map-scale union with mixed forces around it.

These are awesome.  I got some aerotech minis on ebay and have been mulling over what to do with them, and this makes me excited to get to work.
