VTOL Airlifts for Vehicles
« on: 22 November 2019, 15:36:01 »
Are there any rules for VTOLs air lifting lighter tanks or other vehicles?  I guess I'm thinking in regards to rules that VTOLs need to land completely before anything can disembark (disregarding jump infantry if I recall).  So can they carry vehicles (even mechanized/motorized infantry) and drop them from a tow hook, or something of the sort, so the VTOL doesn't need to land completely?

Would this be beneficial?  In my mind the VTOL can travel further without having to waste movement points on landing, but there is obviously an argument to the VTOL landing behind a building or something of that sort.

Let me know your thoughts.

Working on the assumption that you want the vehicles to be combat ready during the same TW game you drop them in, VTOLs cannot carry them internally. Similarly, Total War is explicit in  that mechanized infantry cannot be carried internally by anything smaller than a large support vehicle, small craft, or DropShip.

However, such units can be carried externally, essentially in slings and whatnot. You can land, drop the cargo, and off it goes. VTOLs with Lift Hoists are recommended, for the boost in cargo capabilities.

Note: you can fly while carrying such units, you can drop them off, but you cannot pick them up during the course of a game. You wanna do this, you have to start the game with the vehicle already loaded into the slings/nets/whatever, and once let loose, they're not getting picked up again. Plan accordingly.

Motorized infantry, on the other hand, AND it's associated Field Artillery, can be loaded on a Fighter with an appropriate infantry compartment/bay...  >:D

No need for a full compartment, for a short-range transport just use cargo.

Cargo bays don't allow combat deployment, compartments do...  ^-^

Ah, I see you're right... Those darn unit designers back in the day clearly didn't have the current rules!

But to be clear,  I think only infantry can pull off the cargo trick.

You can't do that with a tank from a DS.

The original 3025 fluff for the Karnov w/ the cargo external rules had it lifting Light Mechs (Panther) at half speed originally.

LOL!  Based on that comment, you actually might enjoy the movie "Arrival".  It's pretty slow paced for science fiction, but the time flow bits... wow...  Granted, I still identify as a physicist (after all these years), so that may have biased my opinion...  ^-^

In canon examples . The siege of Earth Tunbo super heavy support VTOLs was used to insert mechs in the Alps . It is also the best salvage asset in the game .

I searched "airlift" specifically for one question:  Can VTOLs (with the appropriate cargo capacity) sling load a Mech?

For an AtB game, I'm looking to improve my maintenance capability by forward deploying an "Engineering" Mech with a lift arm/salvage hoist (per StratOps pg 171), establishing a Forward Area Re-arm/Re-fuel/Repair point.

Edited to add:  based on the previous post, I guess so!

I think the 3075 / 85 TRO . Tunbo super heavy  support VTOL  a 57 ton VTOL  that can hoist 112 tons in the air . Been around for the Draconis Combine military since 3050s sometime ( Taskforce  Serpent  ) .?
