Tilting Bandits?
« on: 20 November 2023, 23:56:55 »
I just got a blister of Bandits.  These are my first Ironwind hovercraft.

They come with a pair of what looks like pyramids.  Ostensibly they look like they are to provide a stand so that it looks like the Hovercraft is hovering.

However, it doesn't look... stable.

I'm assuming that some super-glue will help stabilize it permanently, but I don't think it will stay that solid without some reinforcement.  As a side note, I don't plan on putting it on a full-size hex based.  I may put it on a Battleforce-sized hex later, but not for now (largely due to lack).

So, what is usually the best approach some of you have found?

Just glue and hope it keeps?

Wait till I get a base for it and then glue it all together?

Try to set up a good pin to reinforce the point so that it doesn't tip, fall over, and/or just break off the stand?

Wait till I get a base for it and then just glue it to the base without a stand?

How have you approached these?

I put a tiny ball of greenstuff in mounting hole to help stabilize it with glue.

File the point of the pyramid - I'd call it a cone, myself - down a bit, so the metal meets the side of the indentation in the bottom, instead of the pointy tip hitting the deepest part. That gives you more contact area, and a more stable join, with a little superglue.

I'm with Worktroll. Clip or file the tip so that you get a better fit, then glue should be fine to keep it together.

I found on hovercraft  to trim off the points and fold over the fat part of the sprue, file smooth and glue to bottom.  Painted it flat black.

My approach is similar to Worktroll's, though I usually try to drill out the tank a bit, under the belief that the deeper that base goes into the tank, the more secure the glue joint will be. Either way, the idea is to maximize the amount of contact between the base and tank.

Also, if you're gonna put a base of any kind under all of that, definitely do that before any painting.

Heh, cone is a better term.  It can be interesting how words come to the mind.

That was my first consideration, I was just wondering if it would be enough in other people's experiences.

I found on hovercraft  to trim off the points and fold over the fat part of the sprue, file smooth and glue to bottom.  Painted it flat black.

Fold over which way?  Down and under?  Up to make another contact to be glued?  That last might work if I do it right...

Also, if you're gonna put a base of any kind under all of that, definitely do that before any painting.

That is the preference, but if do put it on a Battleforce hex, I'll have to set everything up so I paint the base with as space left for the contact points.  A pain.

Still, I'm not as likely to get a base because I find bases on units where I want to put 2 in a hex tend to interfere with it unless they are smaller (hence the Battleforce hex, if at all).

Yeah, I tend to avoid bases on vehicles unless they're so small that they might easily get lost otherwise, like the Savannah Master.

Unless I'm wanting to magnetize turrets for twisting, I pin mine.  File off the offending bit, then drill a fine hole with a pin-vise in both the turret and the tank body.  Finally a simple bit of floral wire as the anchoring point.
