Title: What level of Property Trait to own a Solaris VII Arena?
Post by: E. Icaza on 03 October 2018, 18:12:57
I was fooling around with chargen and some campaign ideas when I realized that one character that I had made up could very easily be an Arena owner on Solaris VII.  A few quick changes to the background and Katrina Hartford, heir to the (dwindled) House Hartford family fortune and potential owner of the Hartford Gardens Arena was born!  I made her up for the DA time period, so there is some Wolf Clan Protocol in there as well, as she's learned to say "Aff" and "Neg" when necessary.

So, what would level of Property would be needed to outright own the Hartford Gardens Arena.  It's a Class 4 Arena in the Reaches, so it's not one of the big ones, so what do you all think?

Hmmm...

In terms of entry fees and the money those generate it should be somewhere in the 3-4 range but I could see arguments for as far down as 1 to account for the corruption and extra overhead of Solaris.

Yeah, I was thinking 3 or 4, but I hadn't thought of the corruption angle.  That's definitely a good plot hook to hang a few adventures on.

The backstory for the character is that she arrived on Solaris to run the Arena just a few years before the Wolves turned on the Lyrans and now she's trying to survive (and turn a profit...she is Lyran after all) on a S7 dominated by Alaric's Wolves.  I also bought her a Title and a bit of Wealth and Extra Income to reflect that she's got House Hartford's much diminished resources to help her out.

Sounds like you've got a pretty good start on everything.

What about for the larger arenas, like the Class 5 & 6?  Could you even own one of the Class 6 Arenas like Ishiyama or The Factory?  I don't have the S7 boxed set and my MW Guide to S7 is boxed up, but aren't they "state-owned" Property?

i'm not sure they are stat owned or state sponsored.
the way I remember it, the factory, was an old dropship factory complex that was trashed/destroyed as a manufacturing complex, and someone turned into an arena.

the laio arena "the jungle" is actually a park complex being used as an arena. I know I don't think I would really want too have a picnic in a battle field but ....

so yes I could see someone as owner/owner operator of those arenas but I could also see them as a boom or bust proposition that either brings in huge profits or costs hideous amounts of money.

Not State-sponsored, but State "affiliated".
(Short version, because I lost everything I had typed in...)

DAVION ARENA
..
Owner: United Federation Corporation
History:
In 2786 the Fed Suns undertook construction of the largest and most sophisticated arena on Solaris. A consortium of corporations, lumped under the collective title of United Federation Corporation, undertook the actual construction.
But there's an interesting possible break in lore here:
Quote
In 3028, a mercenary unit called the Gray Death Legion recovered a Star League data core on Helm ...
In addition to the military secrets, the core contained information that led to significant advances in holotechnology, communications, visual display, and information transferal...
The new Davion arena would be a state-of-the-art facility exploiting all aspects of the new technology.
Because the arena was originally built when Star League-era technology was still prominent, it's possible that either it never possessed anything as "state of the art" as was re-discovered, that the systems once in place had degraded and were totally forgotten, or, the writing is a bit off.

RE: Solaris VII Arena
This is to inform you that Irian has recently obtained the abandoned Fleetham Industrial Park on Solaris VII. Rather than restoring it to working condition, we have been toying with the idea of converting it to a 'Mech arena, to serve as the official Free Worlds League stadium, just as the other Great Houses have done with their own arenas.
Despite our high level of resources and considerable technological expertise, Irian cannot handle such an undertaking alone. For this reason, we have decided to contact you informally to discus the possibility of forming a consortium or limited partnership to investigate the project.

I recall somewhere in the books, it talks about how much was spent at construction... but was only in the 100's of millions, suggesting the Davion Arena(?) was the most costly(?).
