House Ma-Tsu Kai



Formed in 2991, House Ma-Tsu Kai was known among the Order for its tactical and strategic acumen, dissecting an opponent's strategy and exploiting its weaknesses ruthlessly. Unfortunately, near the end of the Jihad they were nearly annihilated over Pleione by Blakist “pocket WarShips”, and only a handful were able to retreat and withdraw back to their monastery on Bithinia. Among the dead was the House Leader, Shiao-zhang Jasmine Liu, known within the unit as Liu-Tsu and one of the foremost strategic minds in the Confederation. Her loss crippled the Warrior House for nearly two generations; while they continued to train new aspirants, they could never accrue enough to maintain a standing force akin to the other Warrior Houses. When they finally managed to form a full battalion in 3109, they were authorized to rejoin the CCAF rolls...only to be almost completely wiped out the following year on Kurragin by an RAF task force that included then-Captain Jonah Levin, in a battle that resulted in his induction into the Knights of the Republic (and thus put him on the path to his eventual ascent to Exarch of the Republic).

Despite these setbacks, House Ma-Tsu Kai once again returned to training new aspirants on Bithinia. In 3130 they received an enormous boon in the form of a noble patron: Mandrinn Nikolai Jackson, newly-minted CEO of Bithinian Ballistics and one of the richest men in the Confederation, had been enthralled with tales of House Ma-Tsu Kai ever since he was a boy. Wishing both to restore the Warrior House to its former glory and curry favor with Chancellor Daoshen Liao, he contacted both Gang-shiao-zhang Jiang Hui and Ma-Tsu Kai House Master Damien Liu and offered to supply them with the funds for whatever equipment needed if they could supply the personnel. Mandrinn Jackson spent years combing the Confederation for applicants while buying up BattleMechs, tanks and battle armor to outfit House Ma-Tsu Kai to the same standard as the other Warrior Houses. By late 3144 they were fully manned and equipped, and ready to take the field once more.

OFFICERS
Shiao-zhang Damien Liu is the grandson of legendary House Master Jasmine Liu. Before her death, Jasmine Liu had given birth to a son, Brandon, who per Warrior House policy was adopted by a noble family, House Khun Lo, immediately after birth. Brandon Khun Lo would go on to become the CO of the Bithinia Home Guard. When his own son Damien was old enough, he told him of his heritage and the tales of his grandmother. At the age of twelve, Damien petitioned to join House Ma-Tsu Kai, which was still rebuilding from their decimation at Kurrigan and thus eager to accept him. Initially Damien did not reveal his heritage, not wanting to be given any favoritism by his sifu or the other House acolytes. It was not until he achieved the rank of Shiao-zhang of House Ma-Tsu Kai in 3129 that he revealed his true identity. Possessed of the same keen mind as his grandmother, Damien Liu has turned the reborn Warrior House into a force to be reckoned with.

TACTICS
Just like the old Warrior House, the resurrected House Ma-Tsu Kai prefers to win the battle before they ever enter the battlefield. Special forces assaults, usually led by the chameleon-like Ying Long and Shen Long battlesuits and backed by VTOLs and artillery, are used to neutralize enemy command and control assets. Precise reconnaissance to locate large enemy formations is followed by the deployment of heavy armor and battlesuits to pin them in place while the Warrior House's more mobile 'Mech forces envelop and crush them. Second Battalion has two full 'Mech lances dedicated to indirect fire tactics, and those lances are trained specifically to deliver fire support with pinpoint accuracy.

Yes, in FM 3145 the Warrior Houses are all expanded to two augmented 'Mech battalions and two augmented tank battalions apiece.

Settled in the early 27th century by a consortium of corporate interests out of the Capellan Confederation, Carbonis was only marginally habitable when it was initially discovered. A young planet close to its star, tectonic activity had not yet forced apart the supercontinent that comprised the majority of its land. This continent, which the settlers dubbed Vassa, possessed a thin, tropical strip (no more than four hundred kilometers at its widest) around most of its coast, with vast and arid wastelands making up most of the interior. Industrial concerns quickly sprouted up along the coastal regions; the lack of Confederation oversight allowed local industry to dump enormous amounts of toxic waste in the Vassan deserts, far from any populated area. The lack of a moon left Carbonis with almost no tidal system, and so the coastal areas were largely swampy, fetid wetlands for the first few decades of settlement. However, Star League investment and technology allowed the installation of a vast network of tide-generating machinery that transformed the coasts into picturesque beaches by the outset of the 28th century. Soon Carbonis had a tourism industry to rival its manufacturing, and more wealth came when Irian headquartered IMB Systems (their consumer electronics branch) and their production facilities just outside of the bustling capital of Budapest, protected by the SLDF's Fort Dunedin. Thanks to the peace between Houses Marik and Liao under the auspices of the Star League, many nobles from nearby Oriente and Vanra built beach homes on Carbonis; Giacomo Orloff, Duke-in-Exile of Vanra during the mid-2800s, famously had a palatial estate built on the cliffs that overlooked Budapest.

Unfortunately, when the Star League fell and the First Succession War began, Carbonis was captured by the First Oriente Hussars, looking to prevent Capellan counterattacks from rimward space against an Orloff task force at Vanra. In their haste to crush the local Capellan garrison before they could alert other CCAF forces in the region, the Hussars used tactical nuclear weapons against their garrison at Fort Dunedin. Tens of thousands were killed and massive economic damage was wrought by the collateral damage these weapons produced. As the Succession Wars dragged on, technological decline and Capellan raids caused most of the tidal generators to break down, and for nearly two centuries the coasts reverted back to the wetlands they had been at the settlement's founding. Its status as a vacation destination for nobility and rich tourists alike dissipated, and while Carbonis remained an important trading and industrial world, it lost much of the prominence it had possessed during the Star League.

The discovery of the Helm Core was the best thing to happen to Carbonis in almost three centuries. Among the wealth of re-discovered technologies the Core made possible were the components necessary to bring the tidal generators back online, and investment from Irian Technologies put Carbonis back on the path of ecological (and therefore economic) recovery. By the end of the Jihad, the coasts once again resembled their Star League-era state, and the long period of relative peace that followed resulted in booming profits for Carbonis' manufacturing and tourism industries, especially IMB Systems.

Like most worlds in the post-Blackout age, Carbonis' HPG has been out of commission for more than a decade. Fortunately for its natives, the planet is entirely self-sufficient, and its place on the League-Capellan border guarantees that trading fleets are still regularly seen at Carbonis' zenith and nadir points (both of which have advanced recharge stations). Since it became a part of the Oriente Protectorate during the reformation of the Free Worlds League, it has enjoyed protection from the elite 7th Oriente Hussars. In addition the Carbonis Militia, numbering two mixed regiments of tanks and infantry, is better-equipped than most planetary militias in the League; it includes two companies of battlesuits donated by Irian Technologies (who have a vested interest in maintaining the goodwill of Carbonis' populace and militia both) and a small navy centered around the CMS Giacomo Orloff, an Argo-class submersible aircraft carrier. They are well-seasoned by numerous Capellan, Regulan and pirate raids over the past decade, and have also spent a great deal of time training alongside the 7th Hussars.

Most of the populace of Carbonis is employed by either IMB Systems or the subsidiary and supporting industries around it. Most of the remainder are part of the tourism and hospitality industries; one of the constant political struggles in most cities on Carbonis is between real-estate developers and the residents whose waterfront views are blocked by their luxury high-rises. There is also a robust agricultural sector, based largely around enormous fish farms. Carbonis tuna steaks are considered some of the finest seafood in the Free Worlds League, and on many worlds fetch upwards of 150 M-bills apiece. Strong arts communities have popped up along the desert fringes at the edge of the habitable zones, and are known to ingest a local hallucinogenic fungi called yarne before undertaking "vision quests" into the wastelands beyond.

Perhaps due to their status as a point of cross-border trade, or maybe just the good weather, Carbonisians tend to be relatively affable and outgoing. The most common language on Carbonis is English, followed closely by Mandarin and Italian, and it is not uncommon for the latter two to be mixed into conversations between natives. The vast majority of Carbonisians are Buddhists; the remainder of the populace adhere largely to Catholicism or varieties of Reform Judaism. They benefit from strong primary and secondary education systems, and their universities are second only to worlds like Oriente or Atreus (again due largely to heavy investment from Irian Technologies, who need knowledgeable and capable workers to staff IMB Systems). Carbonis has a parliamentary government, with representation based on a proportional voting system and a prime minister. While nominally democratic, both the prime minister and many MPs are regularly accused of being employees of Irian Technologies in all but name, due to the large campaign contributions Irian makes to all major political candidates.

ROCK AND A HARD PLACE

Looking to make a strong debut for the newly rebuilt Warrior House, Shiao-zhang Damien Liu led his warriors on a raid in force against Carbonis, an important trading and industrial world in the Oriente Protectorate. Guarding it were the 7th Oriente Hussars, an elite unit funded by Irian Technologies and staffed with veteran Oriente Fusilier officers pulled out of retirement, hardened ex-mercenaries and select transfers from the 1st and 2nd Oriente Hussars. Shiao-zhang Liu intended to use the 7th Hussars as a whetstone on which to sharpen his soldiers, while also gaining glory for the Chancellor and the Warrior House Order.

In the tradition of Warrior House Ma-Tsu Kai, the Shiao-zhang did not execute a straightforward raid. Instead, using a combination of merchant connections and Maskirovka agents, the entire combat arm of the Warrior House was slowly smuggled onto Carbonis over the course of four months. Hidden deep in the desert wastelands that composed inner Vassa, the primary inhabited continent on Carbonis, they managed to remain undetected until they were fully assembled and ready to strike.

On 20 January 3145, Ying-zhang Aleks Shaparov led his company, Shaparov's Sharpshooters, on a strike against a regional communications hub that would accomplish the first goal in Shiao-zhang Liu's plan: cutting off the Hussars' ability to call in the bulk of their unit from around Vassa so that the Warrior House could carve them up piecemeal. Nestled on the opposing ridges of the Melrose Valley, the sites were guarded by a mixed reinforced company of Hussars. Shaparov split his force into two equally strong demi-companies (composed of half of each lance), leading one and placing the other under Pai-zhang John Huang.

While Shaparov's force pinned down a medium 'Mech lance and cut through its support forces with relative ease, Pai-zhang Huang's force quickly found themselves in for the fight of their lives; a lance of assault 'Mechs, all sporting thick coats of hardened armor, guarded the western facility. Shaparov re-tasked the two Jinggaus in his demi-company to reinforce Huang and ordered Pai-zhang Yakutkin's (split) lance to bring down both facilities at all costs. Moving into the center of the valley with his Hellstar, Shaparov and Pai-zhang Vega laid down a hellacious barrage of supporting fire that, combined with the rest of Huang's demi-company, managed to slowly bring the near-unkillable Marik assault 'Mechs down. In the process a full lance of Warrior House 'Mechs were destroyed, but when the remaining Hussars saw their senior Lieutenant's Viking IIC burned down by a headshot from Shaparov at nearly nine hundred meters out, they broke and ran.

With the destruction of the Melrose Valley C3 hub by Ying-zhang Shaparov, the second phase of the Ma-Tsu Kai plan got underway. The hole in the Leaguers' command net allowed the Warrior House to slip two augmented companies into the jungles of the inner Vassan strip, just north of the planetary capital Budapest. After five days of carefully moving into place, Ying-zhang Erwin Lefebvre's artillery opened fire on the city from hidden positions, firing dozens of Inferno-IV missiles into the warehouses and office buildings of the Szeged commercial district. This provoked an immediate response from both the Carbonis Militia and a detachment of the 7th Hussars, who moved to secure the bridges that spanned the canyon which ran along Budapest's northern edge.

As the League forces emerged from the city, Ying-zhang Tamiela Ismael's company sprang out of the canyon. Leaping right into the midst of the enemy, her 'Mechs and tanks tore into their foes as laser-guided Arrow-IV artillery missiles came whistling down into the militia ranks. When a light strike lance from the Hussars managed to end-run the Warrior House forces and assault the artillery tanks directly, the variable-speed pulse lasers mounted on their secondary turrets crippled three of the four 'Mechs in a single volley.

Within minutes what remained of the Hussars and Militia were in full retreat. The Capellans fired a few more volleys into Budapest for good measure, secured the area for a few hours to salvage what they could, and then began to withdraw to the Warrior House's hidden desert staging point. Their objective had been achieved: a much larger response force would be on the way, both to chase the escaping Capellans and protect the city from further potential attacks. It would dilute that much further the defenses of House Ma-Tsu Kai's true target: IMB Systems.

Since when did the Warrior Houses field armor?

Since The Scorpion Jar, when House Ma-Tsu Kai is depicted as using armor during the fighting on Kurragin. FM 3145 describes the Warrior Houses as having two augmented 'Mech battalions and two augmented battlesuit battalions. Since I like armor and Ma-Tsu Kai had been depicted as using it, I changed out the augmented battlesuit battalions for augmented armor battalions.

Four days after the Capellan strike on the Szeged district, with the fires still burning and most of both the 7th Oriente and the planetary militia dug in at the various major approaches to Budapest in anticipation of further attacks, Shiao-zhang Liu executed the third phase of his plan. An armored cavalry company under the command of Lien-zhang Morgan Wei would strike at minor rail depot through which a major artery of Budapest's extensive mag-lev network passed. These trains, capable of carrying thousands of tons of cargo all across the Budapest metroplex at nearly two hundred kilometers per hour, were key to Liu's plan. From this junction, the trains traveled to several critical sites, including the heart of the the IMB Systems complex on the Little Buda Isthmus.

Using the open terrain of the machair to move swiftly, Wei's company (Morgan's Monsters) advanced on the depot and discovered a short battalion of milita armor, VTOLs and battlesuits defending the facility. Anchored around a platoon of massive Bulwark Assault Vehicles, the militia put up a ferocious defense against the Capellans, disabling or destroying half of Wei's tanks in the fighting. A charge by the Monsters' R10s disgorged the company's Shen Long battlesuits practically on top of the Marik Bulwarks; a few barrages of tandem-charge SRMs from the battlesuits later, and all six of the Bulwarks were crippled as the shower of shaped-charge warheads punched through the assault tanks' thick armor plating to the vulnerable components within. Their core shattered, the remainder of the militia detachment was quickly destroyed, with only a handful of stragglers managing to flee.

With the militia routed and the railyard securely in Warrior House hands, a full augmented battalion of 'Mechs and supporting forces boarded the next (immediately captured) train and set off for their final destination: IMB Systems.

House Ma-Tsu Kai

Very cool!  I'm a fan of the Warrior Houses, myself, and have a c. 3062 House Hiritsu force I build a number of years ago.  You've outlined your force in much more detail than I ever did, thought, so kudos for that!   I've been thinking about doing a new, updated HH list to have a unit in the current timeline so I had a couple questions for you, if you don’t mind.  Excuse me if I show my ignorance, as I'm still learning about the post Jihad era.

I notice that in your company structure, only the second and third lances are augmented.  Why is that?  I had not seen anything about that in the general info on Liao Augmented units I've read, but I could easily have missed something.  On Sarna.net (I know, not always 100% reliable), it describes an Augmented Company as two Augmented Lances with no mention of a third, un-augmented lance, and an Augmented Battalion as four Augmented Companies plus a Command Lance (presumably not augmented?).  I know from some feeback I received from the author of the FM:3085, that at that time the Warrior Houses battalions consisted of two companies of two augmented lances, each, with no command lance so obviously the Warrior Housed don’t always exactly follow CCAF doctrine. 

Yes, in FM 3145 the Warrior Houses are all expanded to two augmented 'Mech battalions and two augmented tank battalions apiece.

In FM:3145 under Warrior House Orders (p. 31) it states that "During Operation CELESTIAL REWARD the Warrior
Houses once again led the charge, newly expanded by the Chancellor’s decree to two augmented ’Mech battalions and two more of augmented battle armor."  Not sure exactly when Operation CELESTIAL REWARD took place, but when did they change that two two mech battalions and two vehicle battalions?

Since The Scorpion Jar, when House Ma-Tsu Kai is depicted as using armor during the fighting on Kurragin. FM 3145 describes the Warrior Houses as having two augmented 'Mech battalions and two augmented battlesuit battalions. Since I like armor and Ma-Tsu Kai had been depicted as using it, I changed out the augmented battlesuit battalions for augmented armor battalions.

Ah!  I have not finished The Scorion Jar yet, but in that book did they have actual House members piloting the armor, or were they standard CCAF armor units supporting the House?  I know I've got some nonHouse armor support in my 3062 HH list, based on they being depicted in one of the old novels.  Either way, the augmented armor lances are a cool feature and I may see if I can justify adding some to my 3145 HH list (if I ever actually build it!).

You're right about the structure of an augmented battalion. It should, properly, be four augmented companies plus a command lance. When I initially put the Warrior House together, a misreading of the text caused me to think that each company was two augmented lances, plus an unaugmented command lance, and that there were three per battalion as usual. Well after the House was completed, I re-read the passage and understood my error, but I figured that since it worked out to the same number of 'Mechs and slightly fewer conventional assets, I'd keep it as-is to reflect how new (and thus slightly understrength) the unit was.

As for the passage from The Scorpion Jar, I couldn't tell you for certain. I don't own the book, but another poster was kind enough to PM me a detailed summary of the relevant events from the book. In that summary, at least, it does appear that it was solely House Ma-Tsu Kai forces involved and thus that it was them using the armor. That's good enough for me, at any rate.

Loading themselves onto the massive cargo trains that would take them straight to the heart of the IMB Systems compound, House Ma-Tsu Kai's combat arm sped toward their goal. One augmented battalion, led by Shiao-zhang Liu, took a train well ahead of the rest of the unit: this was the House's assault force. Upon arrival at the compound, the House battalion found the remainder of the 7th Oriente Hussars and an Irian corporate security company set up in defensive positions, having somehow gotten advance warning of the assault. With over five lances of BattleMechs, a heavy missile-support C3 armor company, dug-in battlesuits and heavy infantry, and the support of the nearby Argo-class CMS Giacomo Orloff and its battery of Long Toms loaded with deadly-accurate Copperhead munitions, the Shiao-zhang knew he was in for a much harder fight than he had anticipated. However, shortly after contact and was made and the assault got underway, it became clear that the Capellans were not who the defenders had been waiting for: Rolling Thunder, the infamous Regulan 'Mech company, was hot-dropping from high orbit directly onto the compound, apparently using the Ma-Tsu Kai attack as cover for a raid of their own.

What followed was vicious block-by-block fighting between all three sides. The dug-in defenders inflicted heavy damage on the Capellans and Regulans both, as infantry and VTOL spotters brought down precise artillery and missile barrages on their heads (at one point literally, when a Regulan Neanderthal charged in at the Oriente armor commander's Partisan only to have a Copperhead shell blow apart its cockpit in response). The IMB headquarters and several other skyscrapers were toppled, and most of the compound reduced to flames and rubble. In the chaos and confusion, Rolling Thunder managed to make off with the data core they had come to steal, albeit at the cost of two of their three 'Mech lances. Shiao-zhang Liu did not hesitate to exploit the distraction the Regulans presented, rapidly repositioning the Warrior House lines to pincer the defenders between their two foes. Leading from the front in his Tian-zong, Liu tore into both sides mercilessly, personally bringing down an Oriente Marauder and a Regulan Berserker.

While he led most of the battalion on a winding path through the warehouses and office buildings and began pressing into the defensive cordon around the facility's nerve center, a mixed company under Lien-zhang Jana Saraphis mounted a heroic defense against a dedicated counterattack by an Oriente strike force led by the Seventh's XO, Major Jesse Livingstone. Feinting toward the trio of elite Marik assault 'Mechs with her own Yu Huang, she feigned a retreat under heavy fire and drew Livingstone's forces into a trap. As the Capellans fell back in apparent disarray, the Hussars pressed forward through a chokepoint only to enter a series of Fa Shih-deployed minefields. Saraphis' forces immediately began to push back against the Mariks, concentrated fire pushing them back through the chokepoint, where the reeling Marik 'Mechs found themselves backing into another hastily-laid set of minefields. Saraphis' executive officer, Pai-zhang Amy Yeh, used her Lu Wei Bing's superior maneuverability to corner Major Livingstone's Juliano, tearing away literal tons of armor before laser fire from a nearby Irian APC detonated her ammo bins; the resulting overwhelming neurohelmet feedback proved fatal. A final furious drive by a vengeful Saraphis saw all three assault 'Mechs felled and their supporting tanks and infantry scattered; tragically, however, the Lien-zhang was killed just before the Hussars broke, the victim of a skilled (or lucky) Irian sniper with a "David" light gauss rifle getting a shot through her badly-damaged canopy.

As the survivors of Rolling Thunder made their escape, the last few defenders fell or fled. The Capellans gathered all the salvage they could as their DropShips landed at the site's private landing pads; once the the entire Warrior House was loaded, the DropShips turned their guns on what remained of the compound, systematically razing every last building before lifting for orbit. The raid on Carbonis had been a smashing success: the League had been bloodied, the Warrior House's skills sharpened, and its cargo holds filled with both material and intel from IMB Systems and more than enough salvage to replace their losses. By February they had returned to Capellan space, where they received word that the Chancellor himself was greatly pleased with the Warrior House. The House was summoned to Sian, where several warriors were awarded the Grand Cordon of Merit; Shiao-zhang Liu was honored with the Cluster for Conspicious Heroism for his actions in the final battle, as was Lien-zhang Saraphis (posthumously); Liu was also given leave by Daoshen to display the Chancellor's colors on his BattleMech, which was refitted with Clan technology at Hellespont 'Mech Works by request of Grand Master Hui.

Shortly after returning to their monastery on Bithinia, the Warrior House received their new orders: they were being sent to solve the brewing situation on the Victoria Commonality world of Laconis.

Laconis was first catalogued by Taurian surveyors from the Ministry of Trade and Colonization in the early 27th century, shortly after the end of the reconstruction period that had followed the bloody Reunification War. While promising in many respects, initial analysis showed that Laconis' water was too toxic to sustain a significant long-term human presence. Due to this, it was flagged by the Ministry as unsuitable and more or less forgotten for over two decades. However, with the innovation in 2622 of the Jamerson-Ulikov water purifier, otherwise marginal worlds like Laconis suddenly became viable targets for colonization. In 2626, the planet's first colony was founded, mostly by Taurians from the Greek-speaking world of Megaris in the Hyades Cluster. Called Sparta, it lay in the warmer equatorial region of Pellana, along the coast of the Myrtoan Sea. The sprawling mountain range that covered most of Pellana, named the Pentadaktylos (the Five Fingers) by the locals, had four sizable interstitial glacial valleys between its “fingers”; Sparta began in one of these and over time expanded to fill all four. These expansions required great tunnels to be blasted through the Fingers so that transit systems and rail lines could link the valleys directly and relieve the strain Sparta's growth had caused on the fledgling colony's bluewater transport infrastructure.

It was during the excavation of one of these tunnels that an enormous vein of boron was discovered. A critical component in modern BattleMech armor, chemically uncombined boron was rarely found naturally occurring outside of asteroids (even now, nearly half a millennium later, competing theories about geological and cosmological processes that allowed such rich deposits to form with such purity cause vigorous debates in astrogeological circles). Savvy businessmen quickly exploited this by forming the Taurus Majoris Mining corporation, which used Star League economic recovery grants to rapidly build a sprawling network of advanced boron mines that fed into a massive armor production complex in the Caeadas Valley. Combined with a complete removal of immigration restrictions, Laconis saw an explosion in its population as the lure of high-paying mining and manufacturing work brought hundreds of new colonists every day. By the turn of the century, over five million people claimed Laconis as their home.

The SLDF's 35th Infantry Division called the planet home for much of the 28th century, stationed there to fend off the pirate raids that the TMM complexes inevitably drew. While the relationship between the garrison and the planet's populace was often as tense as on any other Taurian world, the Thirty-fifth gained a positive reputation in 2759 when Major General Mila Vandroogenbroeck allowed the division's combat assets and support personnel to be used by the planetary government to help rebuild the capital city after a strong hurricane destroyed the majority of the infrastructure there (the fact that the Nineteenth Army was dependent on the uninterrupted output of the TMM armor factories was no doubt as much a factor as the public relations boost). This greatly improved Laconis' relationship with the Star League's bureaucracy, and it was not one of the worlds that seceded during the Periphery Uprising of 2765 (or the Freedom War, as it is known in Taurian textbooks). As a result, it was completely omitted from the SLDF's reprisals and spared the damage that most other central Taurian worlds suffered from the fighting.

The mass economic downturn that followed the fall of the Star League and the early Succession Wars largely bypassed Laconis; its economic strength lay in a resource that was in greater demand than ever. Taurus Majoris Mining used these years to expand their operations, building mobile refinery stations throughout Taurian space. By the 31st century, it was the largest commercial extractor and refiner of ores in the Concordat. The TDF, by then highly invested in the safety of the armor factories, regularly rotated the battalions of the Red Chasseurs through the system. Other than the occasional pirate or Davion raid, almost always handily fended off by the Chasseurs, relatively little of note happened on Laconis until 3106.

Duke Daoshen Liao, commander of the Red Lancers and heir to the Capellan Confederation, was still furious over the detente that had concluded the Victoria War.  Looking to assuage his wounded pride over the loss of a Commonality capital and the public rebuke of his father for his wartime heroics, Daoshen chose to lash out at the Confederation's erstwhile allies, taking advantage of the Concordat's lingering weakness in the wake of the Jihad to snap up a few valuable worlds. A rapid offensive by Sung's Rangers and the Seventh Confederation Reserve Cavalry captured Laconis, along with Brisbane and Bromhead, catching the defending TDF forces completely off guard. The battalion of Red Chasseurs on Laconis when Sung's Rangers struck was crushed in less than a month, and the planetary government capitulated to the Confederation immediately thereafter. To ease the transition, Daoshen had the majority shareholders of Taurus Majoris Mining inducted into the Sheng nobility and Laconis paired with Brisbane in a new warren, rather than forcing it under the thumb of neighboring Rollis, as many Laconiki had feared. Both the heads of TMM and much of the populace, while not exactly welcoming of the Capellan takeover, had grown tired of the incompetence and heavy-handedness of Protector Urratia and the junta.  Their acceptance of their new overlords was solidified by a series of short-sighted retaliatory raids ordered by Protector Urratia; attacks by the First Taurian Lancers and Gordon's Armored Cavalry in 3112 and 3117, respectively, both did widespread damage to Laconis' infrastructure before being beaten back by the CCAF garrison. The failure of these attacks, along with the spate of planets seceding from the Concordat that followed on their heels, set the stage for the eventual coup d'etat that left Urratia dead and Kaff Doru as the new Protector.

The 2nd Magistracy Highlanders garrisoned Laconis and the other captured Taurian worlds from 3122 to 3137, and the greater cultural affinity between the occupiers and the Laconiki helped smooth over the final stages of the world's full incorporation into the Confederation. However, much of this good work has been undone since the Highlanders left and were replaced by the Eighth Confederation Reserve Cavalry. A regiment composed of the conscripted sons and daughters of BattleMech-owning Sheng nobles, the Eighth had proven an abject failure. Their defeat at the gates of Tikograd during the first attacks on Tikonov had earned them the Chancellor's displeasure, and he effectively banished them to Laconis; Taurian raids had petered off and only the rare pirate raid was a threat to Laconis at all. With little to do in the way of military matters, the arrogant nobles who made up the regiment began to throw their weight around both in the political system and society in general. After a handful of peaceful protests were met with violent force from the Eighth CRC, an anti-Capellan insurgency began. As on many other worlds, the insurgents were aided by the Blackout: Laconis' HPG was one of the many that failed on Gray Monday. While the Strategios' current plan is to gradually cashier and replace the Eighth's members, the Concordat has managed to exploit the situation; already, insurgents augmented by suspected Special Task Groups teams from the Taurian Ministry of Intelligence have made strikes at Eighth CRC bases and assets (and, quite conspicuously, not those of the Home Guard).

For most of its existence, Laconis had functioned as a typical Taurian representative democracy, with a robust welfare state funded by the wealth Laconis' industrial sector produced. In the decades prior to Capellan rule, under the regime of the juntas, political freedoms began to wane as the federal government cracked down on “unpatriotic” sentiments using the emergency powers Protector Shraplen had activated “for the duration of the crisis” in 3066. Ironically, this slow erosion of civil liberties made it much easier for the Confederation to assimilate Laconis following its conquest. With a large middle class and little social mobility (the steep decline of warfare since the end of the Jihad and the hyperinflation that the bull had experienced in the 3070s had produced a long period of economic stagnation for Laconis), the caste system of the Confederation was a good fit for the Laconiki in many ways. They also benefited from the increased rights for servitors that Daoshen's father had established in the previous century, as nearly everyone on Laconis and the other new worlds were able to earn their citizenship by the late 3120s. The economy has begun to improve noticeably in recent decades as access to Capellan markets gives Taurus Majoris Mining far greater reach than they ever had as a Taurian company.

Greek and English are the main languages spoken by the Laconiki; most speak both fluently, as they are both taught throughout their primary and secondary education. Since the Capellan conquest, Mandarin has also become a part of the curriculum, which has put a strain on teachers as language courses threaten to crowd out other important subjects. No religion is particularly dominant on Laconis, although the Orthodox and New Avalon Catholic churches claim the largest shares, with a few million followers apiece. Adherents of nearly every major religion can be found here; for a time in the late 30th and early 31st century, there was even an enclave of the One-Star Faith high in the Pentadaktylos. Not surprisingly, the largest employer on Laconis is TMM; there are also sizable petroleum and aquaculture industries (nearly entirely for local use). Due to the plentiful mountains and cooler-than-average temperatures, alpine sports are extremely popular, and especially mountain-climbing. Not coincidentally, the TDF's specialized mountaineer infantry units usually contained a disproportionate number of Laconiki (and several platoons now serve in the Home Guard). Much like their namesake, natives of Laconis tend to be terse, and accord respect on that basis: to be talkative is to be considered foolish and immature. Like many Taurians (or, in this case, ex-Taurians), most Laconiki despise House Davion; when Bromhead had nuclear weapons deployed against it by the TDF in the 3070s, many Laconiki saw it as justice for the countless AFFS raids that had used Bromhead as their staging point. This hatred of the Davions has also made House Liao somewhat easier to embrace: the CCAF's success against the Federated Suns and execution of the hated Duchess Hasek in recent years has been greatly played up by state media.

Perhaps the most interesting feature of Laconis is that its rotation lasts just eight hours, and its year is only half as long as Terran Standard. Visitors can find this incredibly disorienting as their bodies try to adjust to three sunrises and sunsets each day. Because of the constant fluctuation of lighting and temperature this causes, shades with polarized lenses are extremely commonly worn and tear-away sleeves and leggings are a standard part of almost all Laconiki clothing. Another adaptation has been what the natives call chnoúdi: similar to the concept of “siesta” found throughout the Capellan March and several older Terran cultures, chnoúdi is a nap taken during second sunset and followed by a light, tapas-like meal (usually sushi or other seafood-based confections) with friends or co-workers. Most Laconiki also regularly consume a beverage called tsai vounou, a tea steeped in sage grown in the Pentadaktylos and infused with guarana. When the Confederation took over, locally farmed abalone (or bao yu, as it is known in Mandarin) quickly became a dietary staple as the aquacultural industries began producing enough of a surplus to allow for regular export across the Victoria Commonality, where it is considered a delicacy by the well-to-do and members of the nobility.
