30 July 3145Chaos reigned across Laconis on the day that the Taurian trap was triggered; while attacks on the convoy and capitol were underway, the final stage had been perhaps the longest in the offing. The Laconis Home Guard's Second Battalion, alongside an assault tank company from the Eighth CRC, had been garrisoning Fort Carliss (one of the twin fortresses, opposite Fort Brown, that sat upon the outer 'knuckles' of the Pentadaktylos) for the last six months. In the most recent "resupply" shipment, the treacherous Home Guard had smuggled in the remaining companies of Clean Kill, just ahead of the two companies of House Ma-Tsu Kai that were scheduled to relieve them. Literal minutes before the Warrior House forces arrived, the mercenaries sprung from the warehouses they'd been concealed in and slaughtered the Eighth CRC in mere moments. Unfortunately for the ambushers, a lone Luduan Scout Vehicle managed to escape, warning the arriving Capellans -- but nearly too late.
As
Ying-zhang Tamiela Ismael's forces crested the last rise before Fort Carliss, the mercenaries and militia opened fire. Only canny maneuvering and a bit of luck managed to save the Warrior House forces from instant disaster. More and more assault 'Mechs and tanks began to emerge from the fortress, and as artillery shells began to rain down on the Capellans, it became clear to
Ying-zhang Ismael that a fighting retreat was the only viable option. Fortunately, the half-dozen Arrow IV Assault Vehicles further up the road provided a base of covering fire, as
Pai-zhang Nicolae Chow bravely led his augmented lance directly into the teeth of the mercenary battalion. While their comrades formed a loose skirmish line to try to hold back the tide of steel and buy time for their slower and more vulnerable units to withdraw,
Pai-zhang Chow and
Ban-zhang bin Hud used the incredible maneuverability of their jump jets to get dangerously close to the Clean Kill 'Mechs. Their spotting lasers brought salvo after salvo of deadly artillery missiles, and in their wake they left a half-dozen fallen assault 'Mechs -- but at the cost of
Pai-zhang Chow's life.
One of those fallen mercenaries was their commander, Major Kasha Wilmoth: her
Atlas' cockpit annihilated by a direct artillery hit, and another was the second-ranking officer on site, Captain Qadir Niazi, whose
Griffin had suffered an identical fate. Command suddenly fell to Lieutenant Rihaab Yasser, who panicked and ordered the remaining forces under his command to fall back into the fort and allow the remaining Capellans to withdraw. Both sides were wounded badly enough that neither wished to further press the issue; the Warrior House left fallen on the field five 'Mechs and three Mechwarriors, along with two Behemoth II assault tanks and their crews and a pair of Ying Long squads. These were easily the worst losses the Warrior House had suffered to date, but there would be time to mourn later.
As the day came to an end, the Taurians now controlled both the capitol and one of the two critical defensive points on Pellana, and the Capellan defenders were in disarray. But it had come at quite a cost: Clean Kill and the Laconis Home Guard had both lost more than half their strength in the effort, apparently failing to properly anticipate Warrior House Ma-Tsu Kai's skill and resolve. Worse, the Capellan governing officials had evaded their clutches, costing them a substantial piece of leverage. It was becoming clear to all involved that while the Taurians had hoped for a relatively quick affair, this conflict was about to turn into a bloody stalemate.
