In preparation for the next phase of this campaign, I've decided to radically upgrade Damien Liu's Tian-zong. However, I can't decide between the two upgrades I've come up with, so I thought I'd put it to the crowd.

Tian-Zong TNZ-NX
Tian-Zong TNZ-NXS

Possibly too late, but I like the -NX variant as it hews closer to the Tian-zong's canon layouts (although the NXS is a nasty beasty). One quick question, it looks to me like they are still sinked to handle stealth armor heat, but I thought the CLPS generated less, was that intentional?

No, not too late, and I deeply value your opinion, you're pretty much my favorite designer out there.

As for the heat, at least on the -NX, the idea is that it can pull off a jumping alpha with the CLPS active and still be heat neutral.

Well, obviously I haven't updated here in a while, but Steve and I just kicked off the first scenario of the Laconis campaign earlier tonight, with more of it to come in the very near future. Stay tuned for more details!

Looks like we're just a single session away from wrapping up the current scenario. Instead of the wipeout of the Liao forces I was expecting, it looks like the Ma-Tsu Kai forces and their allies will be able to withdraw mostly intact while having badly bloodied the noses of their opponents. More to come soon.

The scenario turned out to be more or less a draw; it was a very fun game, especially considering that I was expecting to get utterly hosed. I'm working on the write-up now, and will post it soon.

Sorry this write-up is taking so long, guys, it's just that I haven't had much free time lately, so I've chipped away it but it's only probably about a third of the way done. Fortunately I have some time off later this week that I can use to finally wrap this up, so watch this space.

FLIPPING THE BIRD

Mila Vandroogenbroeck Memorial Freeway, The Middle Finger
Laconis, Victoria Commonality
Capellan Confederation
30 July 3145

When Damien Liu and his Warrior House arrived on Laconis in late June of 3145, the local political situation had badly deteriorated. Thanks to the spoiled noblemen's children of the Eighth CRC and their heavy-handed treatment of the populace, the anti-Liao insurgency was beginning to gain real popular support, threatening to overwhelm the local Zang shu zhe branch through sheer numbers. Likewise, it was increasingly evident that the insurgency was receiving support and training from the Special Task Groups, the Taurian Ministry of Intelligence's elite commando force; the Concordat clearly saw the situation as a potential opportunity to reclaim Laconis from an overextended Confederation. Despite the Maskirovka's best efforts, they could no longer contain the situation, which was what had forced them to call in Warrior House Ma-Tsu Kai for help in the first place. Unlike other CCAF regiments, the Warrior Houses existed entirely outside of the chain of command, and thus the House of Scions had no sway over them, rendering any attempts at political retaliation by the Eighth's membership impotent.

Unfortunately, the worst of the damage had already been done. In a major intelligence coup, the Taurians had managed to subvert nearly the entire Laconis Home Guard (including its entire officer corps) without the Maskirovka's knowledge, placing a poisoned dagger at the heart of the Capellan defenses. The Home Guard also provided the Taurians with the codes needed to register on the planetary sensor net as a Capellan convoy, allowing them to smuggle both the Red Chasseurs and the supporting Clean Kill mercenary battalion into the system without incident. With the insurgency making relentless rocket and mortar attacks against CRC outposts and convoys, coupled with reports of unmarked 'Mechs occasionally accompanying the strikes before fading back into the wilderness, the Eighth was forced to rely more on the aid of both Warrior House Ma-Tsu Kai and the Home Guard. As July wore on, larger and heavier forces began escorting convoys, keeping them occupied while the Taurian commander, Colonel Rose Cox, moved her forces into position. Finally, by the month's end, the trap was ready to be sprung.

A sizable convoy loaded with ammunition and armor fresh from the TMM factories headed toward Fort Brown, the Eighth CRC's primary base, on the morning of 30 July. Chaperoning it were two BattleMech lances from the Eighth, a lance of advanced Jinggaus from House Ma-Tsu Kai, and the command lance of the Laconis Home Guard, led by Zhong-shao Moon Tanaka herself from the cockpit of her Thunder. As the convoy passed through a more open section of the Middle Finger's overpass into east Pellana, they came under sudden attack from Clean Kill's Assassin Company, a unit composed of fast-strike medium 'Mechs. The two 'Mech lances from the Cavalry and the lone Warrior House lance moved to engage the attackers, while the Home Guard 'Mechs and tanks hung back, seemingly reluctant to engage. Once the other CCAF 'Mechs were fully embroiled in combat, the Home Guardsmen opened fire on them, rapidly downing a Cavalry Trebaruna and crippling another.

Immediately realizing the extent of the Home Guard's betrayal if the command lance itself (presumably composed of soldiers with the most extensive Maskirovka vetting) had turned on them, Pai-zhang Teodor Szajner took command of the remaining loyal Capellans and led them in a pugnacious defensive withdrawal that dealt as much damage to the mercenaries and their Home Guard allies as possible before falling back. While Sao-shao Zhu and Sao-wei Fok of the Eighth Cavalry provided a base of fire with their assault 'Mechs, Pai-zhang Szajner spread his Jinggaus and the Cavalry's two Vindicators in a loose skirmish line that allowed them to move together rapidly with their jump jets and converge on a single target. To prevent them from being overwhelmed, Sao-weis Luo and Akbash of the Eighth blitzed their Griffins straight through a weak point in the mercenary line, spraying plasma and missile fire all over the backsides of several Clean Kill 'Mechs and doing damage far out of proportion to their own numbers. The mercenaries' positioning and superior numbers all but ensured their escape with the munitions convoy in tow, but they did so with less than half their initial force; the Capellans felled a half-dozen mercenary BattleMechs and wiped out the entire Home Guard force save for Zhong-shao Tanaka, at the price of both Griffins and Sao-wei Vatsik's Vindicator. With the remaining seven Capellan 'Mechs too slow or badly damaged to pursue the stragglers in earnest and without information on what was happening on the rest of Laconis, Pai-zhang Szajner led them west back down the overpass, trying to re-establish contact with the rest of the Warrior House so he could decide how to proceed next.

By the time he did, several hours later, the situation had gotten considerably worse.

Alright, now that I've gotten a little more free time lately, I can start putting together the next scenario tomorrow. Shout-out to Nav_Alpha, who helped brainstorm scenario ideas and gave me some real inspiration for how to shape this thing going forward.

I've had the next scenario for this campaign sitting on the burner for years now, ready to go, and the other night I decided to try it out with the bot. Turns out Princess has gotten considerably more competent in the years since I'd last tried it out, and I'm now four turns in to a very large urban battle; I'll post pics when I start the next turn.

Couple of pics where the scrum has gotten pretty intense, at the beginning of Round 7:

If you can make out the minimap, the blue units are House Ma-Tsu Kai, the red are the Eighth CRC, the green are the attacking Clean Kill and Laconis Home Guard, and the orange dots are the evacuating government officials. Right now the Capellans are striving to bloody the nose of the initial wave of attackers before reinforcing 'Mech companies from the Red Chasseurs arrive on turns 13 and 25. Both sides also have sixteen Arrow IV tubes apiece, and although I'm considerably better with Arrow IV than the bot is, that hasn't stopped her from absolutely vaporizing my Phoenix Hawk IIC 7 and a CRC Po II with her own. Overall it's been going much better than I'd anticipated, but I imagine the tide will start to turn once the first Taurian company arrives, and that I'll want to withdraw entirely before the latter one does as well.

Wanted to note here that this scenario is still ongoing, it's just been on hold because I decided I wanted to co-op the rest of it with Taharqa (he'll be taking over the Eighth CRC from me). So this will be resuming this upcoming Thursday night.

Dunno why I didn't post on here about it before now, but Taharqa and I did the co-op thing last Thursday and had a blast; I'm heavily leaning towards doing co-op runs against the bot like this in future scenarios in this arc, particularly the next one.

Just wrapped up another session of this scenario, and the bot is really taking it on the chin now; those Gùns really started dropping like flies once we dove into 'em, and while we've taken a few more losses from the opposing Arrow IV, we've pretty much got the initial wave on the run. I'm half-considering sticking it out for the reinforcing Red Chasseurs when the first company arrives in a couple more turns and seeing if I can just stand my ground and smoke these fools.

Okay, after tonight's session I'm starting to think I might have to bring in some reinforcements on top of the two Red Chasseurs companies if I'm going to have the Capellans forced out of the capital at all.

The Taurians are coming! The Taurians are coming!

Tonight's session's final turn had the arrival of the first wave of Taurians, and I decided to have the entire battalion deploy rather than just two companies to ensure that the Capellans are forced to retreat, so the first two companies have arrived and another two should be arriving on Turn 25. Hopefully, by the time the latter arrive, I should already have exfiltrated, but we'll see.

Still more or less what it was originally. I lost a couple of pilots on Carbonis, of course, but none of the units that suffered those losses have been used in this campaign yet, so I haven't had to sort out the replacements. I should probably check my master doc, though, to see if at some point I already worked that out and have since forgotten.

So looking over the master doc, it looks like the House lost three Mechwarriors in the Carbonis campaign:

Ban-zhang Miloslav Slavik [1st Lance, 2nd Company, 1st Battalion]
Lien-zhang Jana Saraphis [1st Lance, 3rd Company, 1st Battalion]
Pai-zhang Amy Yeh [1st Lance, 3rd Company, 1st Battalion]

Ban-zhang Slavik was replaced in the usual way, by promoting his understudy to take his place (the new pilot's name is Ares Ducay).

Lien-zhang Saraphis, whose former company has since been nicknamed "Jana's Revenge", is now commanded by former Pai-zhang George Min, who was promoted to take her place. Similarly, Ban-zhang Roman Marco was promoted to replace Pai-zhang Yeh, and two understudies (Ban-zhangs Linda Bakhovtsev and Isolde Sina) have taken their old slots and 'Mechs as well.

Just finished up another session: the Red Chasseurs and the Eighth CRC have really torn into each other, the Chasseurs getting the better of it (partly because the Eighth's TAG-ers for their artillery battery missed their shots [by 1!] for four turns in a row). As a result the surviving Cavalry are falling back toward the Warrior House's position, who were already falling back in anticipation of further Taurian reinforcements -- another two companies of Taurians will be arriving in a couple of turns, so now the Warrior House is faced with the decision of whether or not to risk covering the retreat of the Cavalry rather than just pulling back and leaving the impetuous nobles to their well-deserved fate...

Finally wrapped up the latest scenario a few minutes ago. I will try to find time to do the write-up sooner rather than later, although recent life events (of the good sort, don't worry!) have further constrained my available free time so I'm not going to make any sort of hard promise here. That said, I did have a few hours free up tomorrow evening, so I may just try to grind it out then.

THIS IS SPARTA

Downtown Sparta, Taygetos Valley
Laconis, Victoria Commonality
Capellan Confederation
30 July 3145

While Pai-zhang Teodor Szajner's lance was busy fighting for their lives high in the mountains, another jaw of the Taurian trap swung shut on the planetary capital. The 'Mech battalion of the traitorous Home Guard, backed by Clean Kill's Bludgeon Company (painted in Home Guard colors), moved into the capitol to capture the ruling Mandrissa Kassandra Aetos and her entourage of advisors and bureaucrats; by swiftly and relatively bloodlessly decapitating the occupying Capellan government in a single day, the Taurians believed this would deliver Laconis to them as a practical fait accompli. However, standing between them and their targets were a House Ma-Tsu Kai 'Mech company and a mixed battalion of the Eighth CRC, deployed to the capital ever since the Warrior House's arrival due to the rising tide of insurgency. But the traitors had an ace up their sleeve: Brigadier Odessa Sin and the Third Battalion of the Red Chasseurs were also vectoring toward the capitol, though due to their need to keep a lower profile to avoid prematurely alerting the Capellan defenders, they would arrive a few minutes behind their compatriots. The plan called for the Home Guard and mercenaries to present falsified orders from the Maskirovka to relieve the Eighth, splitting the defending force and allowing them to be defeated in detail by the trailing Chasseurs.

Leading BattleMechs of the Home Guard came into initial contact with elements of the Eighth CRC, and here is where the Taurian plan began to go awry: ironically, even the Taurians had underestimated the sheer bullheaded obnoxiousness of the Eighth's Mechwarriors. Feeling that the 'lowly' Home Guardsman were insulting them with their presence in the capitol when the Eighth had already been deployed in its defense, they refused to accept the Guardsmens' bluff that they had been ordered to relieve them. As several highborn Mechwarriors heaped abuse over the comms channels on the Home Guard, one Guardsman Mechwarrior lost his cool and opened fire on a CRC BattleMech. Suddenly a massive firefight broke out, as both sides began to lay into each other, the traitors assuming that the figurative rubicon had been crossed and that they would now have to commit their force in full. The Warrior House officer in the vicinity, Ying-zhang Aleks Shaparov, ordered the Mandrissa and her retinue evacuated from the capitol; while his command lance placed themselves around the evac zone to protect the fleeing officials, the other two lances bounded forward to try to pull the Cavalry's fat out of the fryer.

With its BattleMech component comprised entirely of Calliopes and Gùns, only the heavy and assault 'Mechs of Bludgeon Company kept the Home Guard from being massively outweighed by the heavier Cavalry forces. Artillery missiles began to crisscross in both directions as the not-inconsiderable Arrow-IV batteries on both sides began to add their firepower to the mix, and numerous 'Mechs and tanks on both sides were annihilated in hails of laser-guided ordnance. The arrival of the Warrior House 'Mechs started to turn the tide in the defenders' favor, as Pai-zhang John Huang's lance of Jinggaus launched headhunting attacks against the heavier mercenary 'Mechs while the CRC 'Mechs cut the lighter Guardsmen to pieces (especially the lightly-armored Gùns). By the time the Red Chasseurs began to arrive in force, the Home Guard and mercenaries had been shattered, and the government functionaries had already nearly made their escape.

Realizing that they would soon be overrun, Ying-zhang Shaparov and his company initiated their withdrawal just behind the evacuee convoy; the Eighth, on the other hand, once again let their pride overcome their reason. Flush with overconfidence from fending off the initial assault, they charged straight into the teeth of the Taurian advance. With the battering they had already sustained, they fell to the elite Chasseurs with frightening speed; Sang-shao Reginald MacGregor-Liao ordered a retreat once the reality of the situation became undeniable, but the damage had already been done. Only two lances of BattleMechs and a pair of tanks, of the original mixed battalion, were able to leave the field at all, although the Sang-shao was among their number. The Mandrissa had escaped, but Sparta was now in Taurian hands, and the hated Eighth CRC had been dealt a body blow. And with the final component of the trap about to snap into place, the Capellans' woes had only begun.

The latest scenario will likely be wrapping up in the near future (which is to say the next month or so), as the ambush which the scenario was based around this time was vastly more successful than I anticipated and the Ma-Tsu Kai forces are now in full withdrawal. I'll of course post a more detailed write-up when it's done, and if I remember to I'll take some pics of the latest turn so people can get some idea of the scale of this one.

Wrapped up the scenario last night, and although it was a loss for the Capellans, they got some good licks in before being forced to retreat. Detailed write-up to follow as soon as I finish writing it.

Well, shit. I just discovered that I accidentally re-used the Clean Kill company from the first Laconis scenario as part of the forces for the most recent scenario, even though they happened simultaneously. Not sure what to do, now.

Another force using the Clean Kill´s colors to confuse the opposition?

Or maybe a false flag of some sort?

You know what, I somehow still gave all the pilots different names, so I think I'm gonna just say that the Taurians gave Clean Kill a bunch of new 'Mechs as part of the contract and they used it to build two identically-equipped companies to confuse opponents.
