Word of Blake troops used nerve gas on the Knights to try and kill them. The Knights were fighting WoB. So why were the Knights hunted down and killed by Free World League units?

I believe the FWLM units that assisted the WOB were compromised by that organization and the Knights were loyal to the fake Thomas Marik so they needed to die

The fake Thomas Marik was a ComStar plant but stopped playing ball with the Word - so the Word needed to engineer a regime change to get a more pliable Captain General.

The Knights were Thomas Marik’s Personal unit - sworn soles to him, not the FWL, not the state, etc.
So when the Word engineered a change in government, the bulk of units initially went along with it - orders are orders, we are loyal to the state, not the person, etc.
Except the Knights.

That means you end up with a rogue unit on the capital that just happens to have elite skills and top of the line, brand new equipment.
You need to remove them ASAP if your change in government is to stick.

The Word used Corinne and her father effectively - seize power, grab Thomas Marik’s wife as a hostage, kill off the senate - boom. You’ve got all the cards.
Shame they didn’t get Tommy as  well and we could have won the war. What?! Oh, I’ve said too much....

Thank you, that makes more sense ;D

Basically missed the details of the last 15 years RL, so got some catching up to do.

2nd and 8th Free World Legionnaires plus the 15th and 30th WoB Divisions were on hand to eradicate them. The FWL Legionnaires were pro-Corrine Marik and she and her father were kinda pro-Blakists. They were both anti-Thomas and they figured getting him out of power was a good thing: plus the Knights were VERY pro-Thomas. The two WoB Divisions were there to ensure they succeeded.

To me, the best summation of the attitude the Blakists and their allies had towards the other parts of the League is this:

They KNEW the Knights would never turn, and had the potential to serve as a rallying focus for everyone else.

Because attacking them and not destroying them would leave them ticked off.

Because attacking them and not destroying them would leave them ticked off.

And anyone who survives can become the focal point of resistance, to boot. A chemical attack leaves very little chance for anyone to pop up as a problem later. (Bonus, good salvage!)

As, after all, the surviving Knights did indeed become a running resistance for a while.
