I was gon'a start a vote, but I'm so rusty, I can't find the button. :(

The point is "I think I've found an engine to standardize upon," but I was hoping to get feedback: Please do comment.

There's a No Prize™ for coming up with a home planet for this silly thing. ;)

This is working backward from an oddball hovercraft …

155 XL, an unusual choice for a standard engine, is it just going to be for vehicles?

Why not a 170 XL?  It weighs the same as a 155.

No: What and how many inexpensive builds do you have on a 170XL?

In that case why pick the 155 XL and not the lighter 145 XL?  The 170 XL is not that much more expensive if the 155 XL is already on the table.  I dunno it, just seems like a weird engine choice for standardization.

When I attempted a "standardized" engine I went with the 100 XL (for ultra-light vehicles and some VTOLs) and the 300 XL (for Battlemechs).

Is that just a battletech thing?  Do we all eventually design a cohesive theoretical military around a 3/5 Assault, 4/6 Heavy Trooper or Fire Support, 5/8 Cavalry, and 6/9 Heavy Scout (with a 10/15 Scout once the XLs hit)?

Well, sticking Vlar 300s in everything is not without precedent.  The Atlas, Orion, Quickdraw, and Chameleon aren't exactly obscure fan creations.

Oh, certainly.  But I have, and I bet Im not the only one, on more than one occasion sat down and built a 'line of battlemechs' all from the same company/star nation, using the same powerplant and similar weapons, with the intent of creating a reasonable logistics train comprehensive military.  Ive done it in 3025 with introtech, Ive done it in 3150 with tripods and maximal tech slosh, and every way in between.

I need help, I think.  :)

Don't forget there are rules that allow leeway for frankenmechs that allow them bigger/smaller engines rather than the correct ones.  You might want to do some research.

I like the Ivory Handle.  Thats a nasty little harrasser.  Might move some armor from front to turret and rear, to get Turret to the AC/20 threshold and the rear to the Gauss Threshold.  I like 21 on the sides, thats 3 CERMlas.

But, with only a little slight-of-hand, I've extended this shtick even farther, and thus increased my odds of landing some financial backing to get this engine factory built. ^-^

"reasonable logistics" and Battletech are you trying to kill Cat Girls?   ;D :D
this isn't the Star League who fields Companies of the same mech

I had to stop and think about it, but "How do you lay down a minefield quickly and cheaply?" :-\

All the standard answers involved a bigger, more expensive vehicle; I'm also hoping the raw speed comes in handy for rearming after seeding the field, using maybe only two of these. I even gave it a turret to conserve movement points …

1.  Interesting Concept.

2.  Where is the 7/11 25 Ton Wheeled Chassis?   Your missing something here.

3.  Make 1 of those hovers an Omni & then you don't have to give it 6 tons of BA cargo,  they can just ride the outside.
(4 Tons of Omni space on the little one will increase Armor nearly triple & then you can have 2 squads on board.)

I reckon only civilians have any regard for wheeled; Build a large wheeled tank, then eyeball the price for a similarly sized tread. :fine_print:

Omnis take up two bays, to cover storage for the other configs? :(

Wheeled seems to work well for USA Army Striker Brigades,  just saying.
Even on the BT map, your talking some use as APCs, LRM Carriers, Infantry Support Vehicles.  Etc etc.
Though the fact that your using an XL for everything tells me you shouldn't be caring about price at all.

Why on earth do Omni's take up a 2nd bay?   Some spare cargo room maybe, and not much more than the replacement parts a normal unit would need.  You replace the LL of a standard unit, v/s you replace it with 2 ERML & LRM5 w/ Ammo for Omni, either way its 5 tons of parts.

:)) I feel only a skoush bad about the price.

If you make it smaller (15ton) and slower (8/12 or 9/14) it gets much cheap as the engine gets very small.
You can try the same with VTOLs.

I'd say its primarily Engine-driven, with size being 2nd.

In the case of your example on Mordel, I'd say its all the special tech more than anything.

Because a bog standard L1 Demolisher is 1/2 the price of that thing at $2,079,000 or roughly the same price as your 25 ton unit above with the XL engine.

:( Doctrine? "XL-Powered Field Guns"? Weren't those supposed to be dirt cheap?

But if you want your battlegroup to be as fast as you troop transports, and any fire will get troops to go prone, then maybe you can pin down the enemy without tiring up your fighter screen.

It costs the same as a Locust, but could take one in open terrain.

It actually wouldn't be a bad idea on a cheaper (non-XLE) chassis...

It's around the cost of a Locust, and would most likely be able to take one...

Check out under non combat support vehicles " Has anyone tried " . Single up to Assault battle  armor hover or VTOL small support vehicles. 5 of the costs less and moves them very fast . They are even fuel cell versions .  And if attacked enroute its 5 separate targets not 1 .
