High Mobility Forklift Truck, HMFT-05
« on: 11 July 2020, 21:24:44 »
It's here because it uses the combat vehicle construction rules.

As many of you may know logistics has always fascinated me and as a mechanical engineer the how is as interesting to me as is the what and the why.

Give credit where credit is due: the HMFT-05 is based on the real world Palfinger GLS 55 4W, see the link below. Palfinger is an Austrian company specializing in all sorts of truck mounted lifting equipment. The line drawing below, if I can get it to upload is of the GLS 55 4W.

Loading and unloading vehicles by hand is a laborious task. A variety of methods are used to make the process easier and quicker; one of history’s most successful designs has been the humble forklift. The trucks are generally built to lift palletized cargo in blocks and move them short distances in warehouses and at point of delivery. Most designs are built for prepared facilities, but a few are designed with rough terrain, such as a construction site or a field in a combat zone, in mind.
Sandia Heavy Industries standard High Mobility Forklift Truck, the MHFT-05 is built for maximum versatility in these conditions. The triangle base of the chassis provides a steady base. The forward pair of wheels and the back, steering control wheel can pivot through 90 degrees at the touch of a button to allow the truck to shift direction of travel the same amount without shifting the load. This makes for much easier and quicker maneuvering in tight quarters while limiting the shifting of the load. A third popular feature of the HMFT-05 is the ability to be carried at the rear of a truck or cargo trailer. This ensures the cargo can be off loaded quickly at the work site without coordinating to be sure a forklift is available on site for delivery.
Quartermaster units utilize the forklifts like the HMFT-05 throughout the Inner Sphere and beyond; it is not a standout among its peers, it simply gets the job done.
On engines and mobility: the HMFT-05 engine can move it at typical convey speeds, if necessary, but the suspension is designed to be a stable platform for moving cargo. Operators describe moving cross-country at speed in an HMFT-05, or similar forklifts as torture in violation of the Ares Convention.

Cool!  Now I want to stuff a 25 rated engine in it...  >:D

Ah, the glorious truck-hugging forklift!
"That's Lieutenant Faceplant to you, Corporal!"

Things that I have learnt through clicking too fast on 'Move Done' on MegaMek: Double-check the CF of the building before jumping onto it, check artillery arrival times before standing in the neighbouring hex, and don't run across your own minefield.

"Hmm, I wonder if I can turn this into a MM map."

Whaaaa ... ?? Are you mad? Who's going to drive a forklift that fast!

Even 4/6 is fast.  Technically you could lower the speed to 1/2, 2/3, 3/5 if you want, the engine would still be ER 10.  NM upon closer look, you did that already!

You could argue that it's nimble enough to make it through light woods or other rough terrain and classify it as "tracked", then give it a 20- or 25-rated engine to keep the speed.

A forklift driver that gets left behind when the truck bugs out, THAT's who'd want to drive a forklift that fast...  ;D

It would, yes... it's the same tonnage as a 10 rated engine.  It would be a little more expensive, but really not that much.
