I just hope that the Hell's Black Aces have been flipped and when the FedSun comes knocking.  a pair of warships gets knocked out, but recoverable.

As far as St. Ives Compact, it could become part of the FS as its own March or Victor could grant some of the newly captured worlds to St. Ives to prop them up more as its own nation?  It would also give any CC refugees a chance to go somewhere other than FS or the FWL.

I am hoping Victor is smart with St Ives. Right now they are hurting but they are more useful as an allied State than as a part of the FedSuns. By remaining Independent it allows the people of the CC a place they can go to that is the real heart of their culture. It also stops and removes major insurgency and rebellious occupied worlds from being an issue. If the people of the CC have nowhere to go except abandoning what makes them a culture they will stay and make life hell for the FedSuns. By taking the jumpships, dropships, and any industry they can claim and moving it to St Ives in order to rebuild them plus adding more worlds to its holdings to strengthen it makes removes the majority of the unrest that would come from taking all the worlds. Breaking up the non-vital areas of the CC into smaller states with pro FedSuns governments or by putting them at odds with each other will stop a reunification from happening. Cause for all the power Victor and the FedSuns now have they simply cannot control and occupy the whole of the CC.

The Federated Sun's finally had a chance to wipe the Capellan Confederation from the map's of the Inner Sphere!
Something tells me that WoB will do something at this point. It's simply unacceptable for the to allow FS a complete victory.

Yes they can, thanks to Battletech planets for the most part shrugging and getting on with the new boss, same as the old boss :p
The Federated Suns has an advantage here in that there are vast swaths of disenfranchised populations in the Servitors and oppressed groups, political prisoners and so on, who can be counted on to become champions of the new order. While most of the general population will see nominal improvements in their situation or at least no negatives. The problem comes at the highest levels, but MIIO don't have extensive files written up for what nobles can be counted on to work with the new regime as genuine champions of their peoples and planets, which ones can be counted on to be trouble and need to be replaced with better locals. It'll be the work of decades mind you, but its not all bad. The former Sarna March has a lot of planets that seem to be ready to throw back in with the Davions and the experience there and from the 3030s can be used to streamline things now.

People just don't move around in bulk in Battletech, Jump Ship logistics just mean you can't move masses of people. The only people who might move around in this scenario are the rich and powerful, the movers and shakers, and there is a bit of a danger of them all migrating to Saint Ives of all places because they think its 'a last bastion of the Capellan nation!' Honestly, the Federated Suns is going to have to absorb and assimilate the Confederation if they want a real, lasting peace. There were be plenty of fringe 'down with the Fedrats!' groups all over the place, but very few of them will be a genuine threat. And if you can really get into the people for whom this change is a HUGE improvement, then they'll be taken care of without the FedSuns having to do terribly much at all.

It won't be easy of course and tie down a lot of occupation troops for some time, but the AFFS can handle it with the right touch.

3069 - January - General Update

Even as the High Command continued to celebrate the successes's of Operation Rat II and Rat III they didn't however get to rest on their laurels. As well as preparing for the "big push" to retake (as everyone was sure to phrase it) Sarna and take Capella they also continued to work to reinforce the Draconis March. Nowhere was this more evident than in the voids of space. In January 3069 the 4th Corvette Flotilla assigned to the Draconis March was upgraded in quality and number of ships. The Flotilla's 1st Division of 4 Fox corvettes all completed their upgrade to the II variant. They were replaced in the repair slips over Edwards by the 2nd Division's 4 corvettes. However to make up the shortfall of warship hulls while the 2nd Division was upgraded and in light of the growing tension on the Draconis Front Fleet Admiral Buchwald assigned the 4 Fox II corvettes completing at Filtvelt (the FSS Hoff and FSS Benedict) and New Syrtis (the FSS Stein's Folly and FSS Redfield) to the 4th Flotilla as it's 3rd Division. This meant that even with 4 ships being upgraded until June the 4th Flotilla numbered 2 full divisions of Fox II warships.

FSS Diamond and FSS Diana, 2 Davion III destroyers completed at Galax were also used to create a new 3rd Destroyer Squadron which was to be home ported over Robinson. While many had argued for the reinforcement of the 2nd Destroyer Squadron to a full 4 ships, the High Command had agreed with Fleet Admiral Buchwald that the additional deployment options of a new squadron was more useful. Similarly the FSS Duncan, completed at New Syrtis, instead of being sent to the 2nd or 3rd Destroyer Squadron was assigned to the Morgan Hasek-Davion's 1st Carrier Battle Group as it's first escort.

All of the now empty construction slips were immedietly refilled with more warships to begin construction. Not only did the finishing slips receive new orders, but the new Challenge System shipyard at June also saw it's first 2 slips go online and lay down a Congress-D II class frigate and New Syrtis class carrier. Additionally the shipyards of the Federated Sun's during January managed to complete 2 Fox corvettes - who were sold 1 each to the Lyran Alliance and to the Wolves-in-Exile - and 4 more were sold to the ComGuard's from the shipyards at Novaya Zemlya. The LA, WiE and ComStar all requested that future ships be constructed to the II variant, but they were informed that this would require additional negotiations. Still the sale of these 6 Fox corvettes was a major boost in the funding of the Federated Sun's Navy given the combat operations being undertaken. Perhaps even more of a boost was the knowledge that these were just the first ships of many that could be expected to be added to fleet in the coming year - including no less than 3 New Syrtis class carriers!

After the meeting between the Coordinator and the First Prince tensions immedietly skyrocketed along the FedSun's Combine border. On both sides military commands stood up to full readiness in preparation for an attack or even for the orders to launch one of their own. Matters were made worse when near the end of January the Coordinator's personal physicians confirmed to Prince Hohiro that his father had suffered a major heart attack during or immedietly after the meeting with First Prince Victor Davion. While the physicians assures the prince that his father would recover, he was at least for the time being temporarily incapacitated and could not be stressed if he was to recover.

Given Hohiro Kurita's by now deep hatred of all things pertaining to Victor Davion the fact that the despised Davion had driven his father to this ignoble injury was more than enough for him to seize the opportunity it presented. All DCMS commands were placed on a war footing and every major warship slipped from it's moorings and headed out into the dark to take up their war time postings. Hohiro in conjunction with the Warlord's of Benjamin and Galedon began moving troops to staging areas near the FedSun's frontier. The plan was simple. A two pronged pincer strike from near Misery and Prosperina to converge on Robinson. At the very least it would result in the AFFS having to draw troops from their exposed "Galtor Thumb" or risk them being encircled and cut off. With enough troops and luck it was considered that the Dragon might even close it's claws upon the world of Robinson and cut the heart from the treacherous Sandoval's! Yet such preparation's took time. Hohiro had to move fast, before his father could recover sufficiently to urge caution, yet not so swiftly that he wasn't ready. Worse he had to keep such preparation's hidden from the Warlord of Pesht - his mother - who would no doubt take the matter to his father.

As hidden as these attempts were, the AFFS wasn't blind to the growing forces on their frontier and made their own preparations in light of the intelligence filtering in from the Combine. Despite still being extremely under strength the 1st Conroe Borderer's and the 1st Galtor Borderer's were ordered to stand too and were added to the active rolls to give their worlds additional defensive formations. To aid them their local Training Battalion's were ordered to consider themselves for the time period a 2nd battalion to each formation.

First Prince Victor himself spent January rushing from his meeting with the Coordinator to meet with the new Duchess of St Ives. Even as he did so additional reports reached him at every stop of the faltering situation in the Compact. Duke Hasek even made the point of sending him a message suggesting that one "quick fix" would be for the Compact to be absorbed into the Capellan March as the St Ives PDZ and that he would personally assure the First Prince that the worlds would then be carefully integrated in a way to ensure they were productive members of the Sun's. While thanking his cousin for the suggestion, the First Prince did rebuff the intent.

Victor was also busy sending messages to Comstar and the Lyran Alliance during January repeating previous notifications that the attack on Terra would have to be delayed. He had a major humanitarian crisis and a war on one  border and the beginnings of another on his other frontier. Now was not the time for him to divert a huge chunk of his forces to retake the Terra system. Archon Steiner took his brother's news with quite (and behind the scenes happy) acceptance, but Interim Primus Dow was furious and demanded that Victor "keep his word". The argument that followed between the two men would sour relations between them permanently. At the end of it however Gavin Dow was in no doubt of his status of junior partner in any anti-WOB coalition or alliance involving the Federated Suns. The Federated Sun's would continue to support Comstar and the ComGuards, however this would take second seat to their own needs and demands. Victor assured Dow that he would keep his word, but that he would do so in a practical and measured way and not above the safety and security of his people!

During January the Johnston Industries plant on New Syrtis finished construction of it's new Caesar line. With the completion of this battlemech line the company decided to add an additional third Dagger-O line to keep pace with increasing demands during wartime.

On Bristol the first Fury Command Tank line in hundreds of years roared to life and began producing the venerable but still lethal command vehicle. Before they were even painted the first of these new tanks were loaded onto transports and rushed to the armoured formations of such units as the Davion Assault Guards and other commands readying for the coming battles!

The Michaelson plant on Marlette entered production for the ComGuard's during January. Producing the gunship VTOL's for which the company was justly famous for they began shipping out to the various ComGuard's Divisions throughout the Federated Suns. None were shipped to ComGuard formations within the Draconis Combine.

Norse Battlemech Work's new plant on Mayetta also began producing from the first of it's 3 building lines. The other 2 lines are not far behind the Sling in entering production and the first lance of the new battlemech is donated to the Mayetta DMM. Further production is earmarked for the Tancredi Loyalist LCT's.

On Valois Clan Sun Jaguar announces that it's Clint IIC line has now been completed although work continues on the more high tech Mist Lynx omnimech production facility. The AFFS does, through Duchess Isis Marik as an intermediary, contact the Clan to ask if they would be prepared to sell "upgrade kits" to allow the AFFS to upgrade some of their own Clint's, Wyvern's, Guillotine's and Highlander's to an IIC specification in addition to the numbers they buy directly. The Khan promises to take this under advisement - and to discuss the matter with her Technician, Merchant and Scientist advisers as to the feasibility of the suggestion.

On Sian at the end of the month the Chancellor summons Ion Rush and Talon Zahn to the Celestial Throne room where he lays out his plans to repel the Davion invasion. In a 3 hour monologue he explains to the experienced generals that the Davion's have made a fatal mistake and have underestimated the loyalty and dedication of the Capellan people's to their beloved Chancellor. As soon as the Davion's set foot on Sarna and Capella the local populations will rise up in support of the "True First Lord Of the Star League". He goes on to explain in detail how the masses of true believers will drown the invading forces in blood, forcing them to use up their ammunition to prevent the human style wave attacks from overwhelming them immedietly, at which time the regular forces defending the world will have no problem at all in sweeping the field of any remaining Davion's. Using the captured Davion equipment and taking advantage of the plummeting morale of the AFFS which had just seen it's best troops destroyed to the last man and woman the CCAF would then launch a counter attack which would retake the "sacred commonality worlds of Victoria, Liao, Tikonov... and Chesterton". The Chancellor did not deign to take advise or questions from his generals but merely sent them forth to implement his divine plan...

Quick Sunny, to the Führerbunker!!!  :D

EDIT

Slightly more seriously, Dow needs to ****** be yanked back by the rest of the First Circuit. It's pretty bloody clear that, through no fault of his own, Victors strategic situation has gone to shit and accordingly he needs to change priorities. Angrily yelling at him, demanding he stick to the timetable ... its not going to do anything but piss off ComStars greatest (and honestly, only real) patron and champion. What he SHOULD have done is feel free to vent and scream all he wants in private, then politely and calmly present and offer alternatives to Victor.

Like scaling down his commitment or even dropping the request for Ground Forces to a couple of RCTs instead of 20, but wanting as many warships for a couple of months as Victor can possibly spare, to destroy the WOB fleet and SDS grids, after which point ComStar can take things over themselves. Or looking for some concessions with more support for the ComGuard fleet. Or something! But he's a complete failure as a politician if his first instinct is to try and angrily yell Victor into doing what he wants!

Its honestly about time for the First Circuit to find their damn balls and start yanking his choke chain a few times at this point. And I'm sure that by now there is a very good chance SOMEONE in the WOB has found out about the planned raid, what if Dow is yelling at Victor about it over HPG channels where all you need is ONE ROM sleeper from WOB in the chain somewhere...so good work there Dow! Way to invite a preemptive attack...

Well I think we can well and truly say Sunny has gone over the cuckoo line now. The generals and others have to see the writing on the walls and have now had to deal with 3 successive generations of insane Liaos. I am thinking a coup to remove that family from power is eminent in order to gain surrender terms from the FedSuns and Victor.

Theodore coming to this meeting and bluntly ordering Victor to stop his invasion (which Victor see's as entirely righteous and simply the endgame of Sun Tzu pushing him for too long, Saint Ives just being the last straw) and freely admitting that he doesn't care about the bloodshed, just having a threat on Victors flank ... it's not surprising that everything crystallized into place to the point that Victor played his ace and revealed he knew about his Son. And then Theodore in the icing on the cake moment, outright admitted to Victors face he is ONLY and will ONLY ever act in the best interests of the Draconis Combine and its preeminence over all.
It's the Combine. When called on their BS their response has always been rage tantrum with a side of atrocity.

What Victor should do is take Sarna and the other world first. Then raid the remaining worlds around the rest of the CC steal everything they can and destroy the rest and then build up for longer. Time is on the side of the FedSuns here. The longer they go on the more ships and war materials they make. The taken goods can be used to help St Ives Recover and make it a more appealing place for the CC worlds to join instead of staying with the soon to be dead state. The CC no longer would have the capacity to repair or equip its forces and with Sunny going full insane grandpapa they will not be able to reverse the downfall and will just make it worse with purges and executions of "traitors" same as what Amaris did during the Fall of Star League. Eventually, the people will revolt and aid the FedSuns if only out of a desire for vengeance.

3069 - February - Operation Rat II Fourth Wave

As the Fourth Wave kicked off what the Capellan's had been dreading for months finally occured. Large scale forces descending upon the "Fortress Worlds" of Capella and Sarna... Worse, the AFFS not content with attacking these worlds the Davion's were continueing to push on deeper into the Confederation, striking more and more poorly defended worlds.

Sarna

Sarna's defenders had done what they could to prepare for the invasion, but with a lack of warship support they knew that they would not be able to stop the invading Davion's before they made planet fall. Still they rushed as many aerospace fighters and hastily militarized dropships into production as they could. The pilots and crews for these new assets were recruiting from not only the Sarna Martial Academy but also the plant workers and any retired veterans on the world. Any faint hope that they might be able to blunt the invasion in space were entirely dispelled when the invasion force jumped in led by the 1st Patrol Squadron, 1st Destroyer Squadron and the 2nd Division of the 3rd Corvette Flotilla. No less than 10 warship's - 2 Congress-D II, 4 Davion III and 4 Fox I class ships - were leading the attack.  Backing them up were multiple independent aerospace regiments and assault dropship formations.

Sending the hastily assembled dropship and aerospace forces available to the defenders against this overwhelming force was tantamount to throwing them away for little to go gain - a suicide mission. They were sent anyway. With predicatable results. The scratch force of aerospace fighters and converted dropships charged into the defensive fire of the Davion ship's and their veteran supporting wings and burned without inflicting damage on a single warship. A number of Davion fighter wing's took heavy losses and several pocket warships and assault dropships were destroyed or damaged, but the warship's themselves remained intact and led the way forward to take up orbital positions around Sarna.

At which point the first wave of the invasion forces began to land. Leading the way came the 5th Syrtis Fusiliers RCT (specifically brought up from their garrison posting on Kathil where they had been replaced by the 2nd Chisholm Raiders RCT). The 5th had a history on Sarna, but with the invasion itself led by their old commanding officer Field Marshal Nathaniel Hasek himself this time they were determined to "do it right". Therefore rather than rushing ahead, they were merely leading the way for the other 2 RCT's in the first wave. Following them in were the 1st FedSun's Dragoons RCT and the 1st Kestrel Grenadier's RCT's. This first wave crashed down around the planetary capital of Sarna and within days was engaged in heavy fighting with the 1st Capellan Defence Force.

Under almost instant heavy pressure from not 1 but 3 veteran formations Sang-shao Garry Weinrib was forced to call upon the troops of the 4th Capellan Defence Force to reinforce his lines. This left the rest of the planet only covered by the Sarna Martial Academy Cadre and a handful of Home Guard units. While hurried reinforcement's had brought the Cadre up to roughly 5 companies of battlemech's these new additions had actually reduced the overall effectiveness of the formation despite it's increased size.

As soon as the AFFS intelligence officers had become aware that the 4th Capellan Defence Force was shifting to support the 1st, they sent word to the second wave of the invasion force who were waiting in nearby systems...

Using pirate jump points closer to the planet the already overwhelming firepower of the invading AFFS formations were bolstered by the arrival of the 1st Federated Sun's Armoured Cavalry, 2nd Lexington Combat Guards and 1st Tikonov Cossacks. These new formations all at nearly full strength crashed down to Sarna in a wide formation, closing quickly on the isolated Sarna Martial Academy Cadre and the few Home Guard formations which had been determined to be a valid threat. The Cadre was swiftly overrun and the Home Guard formations largely surrendered in the face of the overwhelming firepower within days of the second waves arrival!

By the end of February the city of Sarna was fully besieged, with the 1st and 4th Capellan Defence Forces fighting hard to hold their lines against repeated attacks and struggling to do so. Morale, which had already been low, had almost entirely collapsed with the news that the Davion's second wave had chopped the Cadre and the supporting Home Guard units to bits in a matter of days. Worse than just the loss of 1 of the 3 defending units, what little intelligence was reaching Sang-shao Weinrib made him aware that with the destruction of the Cadre the Davion's second wave was now heading to reinforce the first wave in attacking him in the capital city. When their forces were added to the existing troops facing him the outcome would only be a matter of time... He hastily reformed his command, folding the massively under strength 4th into his own 1st while attaching the few Home Guard units he had under his command directly to his company commands... Weinrib was more and more convinced that his reorganisations were little more than moving the deck chairs on a sinking ship, but he was determined to hold out for as long as possible.

Sarmaxa

The 8th Deneb Light Cavalry RCT arrived over Sarmaxa even as word of the invasion of Sarna had reached the defenders. The local Home Guard under orders from both Sarna and Sian to "drown the Davion invaders in their own blood" promptly surrender as the first of the dropship's burn flares became visible over their world.

Raballa

The world of Raballa had always been known for it's loyalty towards House Liao and yet had surrendered easily during the Fourth Succession Wars. Perhaps as an effort to redeem that disloyalty the defending Home Guard units were determined to fight as hard as they could against any invasion. The 5th Crucis Lancers RCT's was however more than they could realistically expect to fight off. The local Home Guard formations put up a stiff fight at the spaceport before attempting to withdraw into prepared defensive lines around the planet's capital city, however the 5th Lancers pressed them so hard that they were unable to properly disengage and reform in their defensive lines. In a short ranged messy firefight the Raballa Home Guard was destroyed, but at the loss of roughly a fifth of the Lancer's fighting strength.

Lesalles

Keen to avoid any destruction of their native ecosystem - such as their famed tree's and the much prized Lesallian Mailsloth - and aware of the likelihood of reinforcements arriving to help them, the local Home Guard commanding officer and the planetary duke sent out word that they surrendered as soon as the 39th Avalon Hussars RCT arrived in system. The only fighting was caused when a number of pro-Liao loyalists attempted to seize the planetary duke to force him to resist, but this was dealt with by the Home Guard and his own bodyguards before the 39th had even managed to touchdown. All that was left for the Hussar's to do was to take up garrison positions...

Summary

With the entire Liao Commonality now conquered (or reconquered) only Sarna remained holding out. Or more appropriately a single city on Sarna remained flying the flag of House Liao as overwhelming force moved in around it...

You cut off a bit at the end of the update.

The WoB most likely took the ship and her and went to Terra there is nothing else she can do anymore. They have used all the assets they had in their "somehow" perfect execution of their attacks on St Ives that insane cultist managed to pull off without no one noticing that they were cultist or insane laying low for years. She is of no use to them now and they will either kill her or take her with them because they will not let the FedSuns get her.

Well that went about as well as what was expected. Now only Capella is left of the main targets. What is the status of that secret shipyard meant to increase the repair rate of the FedSuns during war? Also with Sarna taken how much of the Sarna March is left? And will it be possible to raid and steal the industry of the other worlds like what they did during the other attacks and wars?

She still has some value as a target. If the Word let it be leaked that Kali and her surviving supporters are holed up in some specific place, cooking who knows what new mass-murderous scheme, the AFFS would be practically obliged to come and kill her... which could set the stage for a WoB ambush.

Arcadia's secret repair  yard is still building. Now all of the Sarna March (excluding a few FWL worlds) has been reconquered, along with a good chunk of the Capella Commonality, a fair chunk of the Victoria Commonality and some even of the Sian Commonality.

She still has some value as a target. If the Word let it be leaked that Kali and her surviving supporters are holed up in some specific place, cooking who knows what new mass-murderous scheme, the AFFS would be practically obliged to come and kill her... which could set the stage for a WoB ambush.
Except as we have stated before the WoB does not have the forces to fight the AFFS. Any force sent to deal with Kali would have an extremely powerful warship complement which the WoB can't hope to match. And it is even worse on the battlemech and ground forces portion. The WoB's greatest advantage is the fact that they are safe in their own territory because of the SDS making it a grind to attack. They cannot on the other hand attack like they did in canon since they are vastly weaker and smaller than that in this TL.

Who said anything about a fair fight? Nukes! Command-denotated nuclear mines in orbit. Nuclear artillery. Nuclear charges seeded in the ground of the landing zones. Nuclear charges seeded in the ground around "Kali´s hide-out". Nukes everywhere!

Oh, and probably nerve gas, too, just for fun.

And it´ll be all for nothing, because Kali isn´t there.

Sarna

Court Martial whoever was in charge of the Davion wings that took heavy losses when they had such overwhelming advantages.
Unless they died of course - unlike the Combine, the AFFS doesn't put corpses on trial and sentance their family to slavery when they are found guilty  ::)
Otherwise, strike the unit from the rolls and disperse its personnel to other fighter units. And mental note; someone needs to make a 'TOP GUN' fighter school for the AFFS's next generation of fighter pilot leaders to attend and learn advanced tactics, including working with warships...

Still, from the CCAF point of view, what a stupid waste of material! If you're going to go Kamikaze, then GO Kamikaze! Issue the nukes to the fighters and base your entire plan around punching through the Davion screen to let a select group of fighters play Radioactive Miraborg...otherwise what the hell was the purpose behind this death ride?! Must be Mask 'advisors' in the command structure following orders to ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK and that any hesitation or delay is clearly prelude to a unit preparing to surrender...

It would have been far wiser to keep the fighters on the ground and under cover in newly constructed dirt strips near primary targets, then scramble them as the troopships enter the atmosphere. Keep your pilots as fresh as possible and engage with very little time for the defending interceptors to stop them and the warships cannot do anything to stop you, unless they want to start shooting up civilian targets when their shots miss. And as a bonus, it even gives the defending pilots a slim chance of surviving as at least they can eject. Or keeping them close to hand to unleash against ground troops as a last ditch card to play at the right time...

Oh well.

You mean not be waved ahead by Hanse Davion to get themselves killed as a pointed example to the entire Capellan March of what exactly Hanse Davion did to traitors and those who supported them?  :D

Honestly the problem is that when you get outnumbered THAT bad, the attackers simply do not stop. The attackers can rotate units in and out of the attack, getting enough sleep, food and downtime to be then rotated into the attack again, working nice 9-5 office hours and all that! While the defenders are pretty much under attack 24/7 - not simply harassment attack, but full scale attack...

Once you reach this point, you surrender. Even if Weinrib himself refuses to, the subunit commanders should be throwing in the towel now - shooting their political officers in the back if necessary. Elites with strong morale might be able and willing to hold on for various reasons, but with morale at rock bottom...

Wonder if word is finally starting to get out through the WOB news blackout of just how ****** the Confederation is...

Ouch. That's rough. Although I'm guessing that things are going to be messy for a while if the Home Guard are that fanatic, the local population might have a lot of fanatics as well...

See, this is how you stay in power. Duke swears loyalty to the Federated Suns, flags change, plants stay happy; everyone is happy!

Summary

With the entire Liao Commonality now conquered (or reconquered) only Sarna remained holding out. Or more appropriately a single city on Sarna remained flying the flag of House Liao as overwhelming force moved in around it...

Lets just hope no-one (like the Maskirovka) does anything stupid now...I could just see SOMEONE nuking the city out of spite to deny the Davions their prize (and punish Sarna for AGAIN failing and falling to the hated Davions...)

3069 - February - Operation Rat III Fourth Wave

Along with the invasion of Sarna and the reclamation of the rest of the former Sarna March by Operation Rat II the AFFS continued with Operation Rat III and in particular launched their attack upon the vital world of Capella...

Capella

The first wave of AFFS forces into the Capella system were of course warships. The FSS Morgan Hasek-Davion led the way, but accompanying her were the 4 operational Avalon class cruisers of the 3rd and 4th Cruiser Squadrons (the FSS Reynard Davion was awaiting repairs having suffered moderate damage so far in the campaign) along with the FSS Daring and FSS Duncan both Davion III class destroyers. Backing these heavier warships up is the entire 1st Corvette Flotilla - 12 Fox class corvettes, a third of which have been upgraded to Block II class ships. To match these the Capellan's have the CCS Elias Jung cruiser and the CCS Anhui destroyer. The 2 Capellan Navy warships are backed up by a strong contingent of assault dropships from the local shipyards as well as the Hell's Black Aces aerospace regiment and some local aerospace formations. However even in these numbers they are grievously outnumbered, with the Federated Sun's Navy having not only brought along their embarked fighter strength and dropships but dozens of additional assault dropships dropped off by jumpships and a number of independent aerospace regiments.

Worse from the point of view of the defenders the first wave includes 3 full RCT's. The sight of the icons of the Davion Assault Guards RCT is enough to cause the ground defenders to pale, but the icons of the 2nd Davion Guards RCT and the 4th Deneb Light Cavalry RCT in the invasion force adds no less than another 200+ fighters to the Capellan's space based forces headache. Even with losses the 2 RCT's have more fighters than the entire defending force - and they are only part of the invasion flotilla and are there purely to reinforce the aerospace formations embarked with the naval forces.

The captain of the CCS Elias Jung who is in command of the black water forces defending Sarna would dearly love to break off and flee, to fight a hit and run campaign in other systems to try and bleed the Davion's rather than facing them in open combat. However his instructions from Sian leaves no room for discretion. He is to defend the planetary orbit of the Fortress World of Capella to the death. Not a single Davion fighter is to reach the planet. Just in case he has any thoughts to interpret these orders liberally a squad of Maskirovka have been seconded to his crew to "bolster morale".

Shackled by these orders and horrifically outnumbered the end result of the battle in space is never in doubt. The 2 Capellan warships in an act of futile bravery attempt to close the distance with the incoming Davion Task Force Sarna and break through to attack the transports. Their dropships and the various aerospace fighters attempt to screen their suicidal charge but are soon being torn apart by strikes from the massed Davion dropships and fighter wings. Hell's Black Aces were singled out for particular attention and the fighter wings of the FSS Morgan Hasek-Davion and the 2nd Davion Guard's were dispatched specifically against them. The under strength aerospace regiment holds it's own for the first stage of the fighter engagement, reaping a fearful toll in Davion fighter's, but then damage begins to mount. Pilots become fatigued. Other less skilled formations are torn apart leaving the Aces isolated... And the seemingly never ending numbers of Davion aerospace fighter's just keep coming...

With the last of their fighter screen and accompanying dropships burning around them the 2 warships continue their charge. As the range closes the corvettes of the 1st Corvette Flotilla move forward to impose themselves between the Capellan warships and the larger Davion ships and begin firing. Against a Feng Hung class cruiser and a Impivado class destroyer no Fox class ship or even Fox II class ship could hope to be successful. The problem is that it isn't just 1 Fox. Or even 2. No less than a dozen Fox's meet the charge head on, forming a gauntlet that the 2 larger ships must charge through. On the other side of this gauntlet a further line of 4 Avalon class cruisers and 2 Davion III class destroyers are waiting to pummel them. However, given the torn and ravaged state of the CCS Elias Jung as it streams bleeding past the Fox corvettes, leaving the CCS Anhui broken in it's wake, it lasts only a handful of volleys from the Davion heavy ships before exploding.

The Task Force Capella takes some time to reorganise. Although the fight had been one sided, the Davion warships had taken some damage. Fully half the ships of the 1st Flotilla had suffered light to heavy damage. Both the 1st and 2nd Division's flaghips - the FSS Galax and FSS Woodstock - in particular had taken heavy damage alongside the FSS Salem and FSS Northfield both having suffered moderate damage and the FSS Kathil and FSS Bryceland both having taken light damage. The damaged ships, alongside the 2 undamaged ships of the 3rd Division were detached to head to Edwards for repairs. It was immediately noticed that the Fox I's had suffered heavier damage than the II's.

At this stage the Task Force detaches a number of embarked marine units and 2 Fox corvettes to take control of the Rashpur-Owens and Ceres Metal's orbiting factories and yards. Heavy fighting, particularly over the warship slips take place, with fanatical Capellan Marines bolstered by conscripted shipyard workers putting up fierce resistance. In a number of cases warship grade weapon's are fired under local control from the almost completed ships in the yards against areas of the shipyards that have fallen to the Davion's. After this the AFFS divert a number of fighter wings to take out any remaining weapon emplacements and batteries upon the ship while more marines are sent in to bolster the attack.

With the Capellan space forces wiped from the skies the invasion troops ready to make planet fall. Leading the way unsurprisingly is the Davion Assault Guards. The full RCT of assault weighted battlemech's and their supporting formations land on the continent of Pociello. Landing far enough away from the Capella War College so as to avoid the garrisoning Warrior House Ijori and cadet formations from sallying forth to contest their landings the Assault Guards only have to contend with a number of Home Guard formations. The War College's combined arms battalion of fully equipped cadets does attempt to rush out to overwhelm the landing Guards, but is beaten off with heavy losses by the 3rd Battalion of the Davion regiment.

As soon as the landing zone is secure (albeit under almost constant low level attacks by suicidal infantry wave attacks by local Home Guard formations) the Davion Assault Guards call in the 2nd Davion Guards as well as a large formation of engineers who begin constructing fortifications, bunkers for ammunition, spare parts, aerospace fighters revetments and runways, etc... The 4th Deneb Light Cavalry for now is left in orbit. By keeping a full RCT in orbit Field Marshal Stephan Cooper (in charge of the first wave) pins the Holdfast Guard, Syn's Hussars and Warrior House Ma-Tsu Kai on the continent of Llagarres guarding the capital of Memorial City and the vital industrial target of Ceres City. This doesn't however stop the 4th from using it's over strength aerospace wings to conduct a relentless bombing campaign across the whole world.

As well as landing the 2nd Guards the Field Marshal sends word for the second wave to be sent. Even as the Davion Assault and 2nd Guard's are closing a tight ring around the Capella War College and beginning the destruction of it's defenders the second wave arrives and begins it's burn for the planet. Leading the way are the 7th Crucis Lancers RCT who's Marshal Zibler has overall command of not only his own RCT but also the accompanying 15th and 26th Avalon Hussars RCT.

With no less than 3 RCT's heading for the planet and with another in orbit waiting to pounce, Sang-shao Anson Quinn can do little but send the defending forces of the Pociello continent his best wishes and divert what few Home Guard formations that remain uncommitted to the fighting already on that continent to aid the defenders of the War College. His own Holdfast Guard remains in place at Memorial City alongside Warrior House Ma-Tsu Kai, while Syn's Hussars guard's Ceres City. The Sang-shao was less than keen to entrust the defence of the vital industrial plant there to the "cowards" of Syn's Hussars, but he has little choice. They are the only regimental sized formation he has except his own Guard. Requests for further reinforcement's have been met with silence.

However at least the local Home Guard have turned out in overwhelming force. Existing infantry regiments have been augmented to full brigades with a mixture of volunteer and conscript formations, bolstered by a large number of penal battalions, while his armour formations have seen similar expansions which have been limited only by the shortage of further armoured vehicles. A number of Home Guard battlemech formations have also been expanded with production of the local factories and now number almost 2 regiment's worth of company and battalion sized formations which are deployed in defensive positions in support of the regular CCAF and Warrior House forces.

As February ends the AFFS continues to reduce the pocket of defence around the War College while in orbit the second wave arrive and begin to prepare for their combat drop alongside the 4th Deneb Light Cavalry. In a nearby system the third wave of AFFS troops is gathering...

Gei-Fu

On the 8th of February the 2nd Confederation Reserve Cavalry's luck runs out. The reformed 3rd Federated Sun's Armoured Cavalry "hops" using it's dropships and manages to cut off the Reserve Cavalry's line of retreat. The 2nd might be able to fight their way through the blocking force with heavy losses, but not before the pursuing 7th Dragoon's and 1st Chisholm Raiders come up and crush them.

Attempting to cut to the north through heavily broken country in an almost futile attempt to avoid the trap the 2nd is brought to ground and in a 4 day battle effectively wiped out. While avoiding being pinned between the 3rd FSAC and the other 2 regiments this attempted break out stood little real chance of success. When Sang-shao Mei Tee Phyn's Yu Huang finally falls on the fourth day and the last of her regiment finally surrenders they 2nd has been utterly destroyed as a fighting unit. They have however managed to inflict heavy losses on the 3rd FSAC and 7th FedSun's Dragoons in particular.

Ingersoll

The 2nd Confederation Defence Force has watched as the Davion juggernaut has battered and smashed it's way through the entire Liao Commonality. Smashed during the last Davion invasion on Necromo the unit has languished forgotten and almost totally lacking in suitable officers since then in a post that was felt to give them no real chance of failing again. Until the AFFS carved right through the Confederation. Worse even than the lack of suitable officers is the total dearth of replacement personell dispatched to the unit since it's defeat on Necromo. Even now it consists almost entirely of the survivors of that battle and a handful of true screw ups who have been dispatched to join it's ranks. With barely a battalion of ramshackle battlemech's to it's name, the handful of officers are under no illusions as their chances.

When the Davion Old Guard RCT arrives in the Ingersoll system they are immedietly contacted by Sao-shao Rai Harada (demoted following Necromo) who immedietly surrenders. And is then shot by his executive officer who is a Maskirovka plant. Said executive officer is promptly killed by the rest of Harada's command staff - who are then slaughtered by an intervention squad of Zang Shu Ze "Chancellor's Shield" agents...

By the time the Old Guard lands, the 2nd Confederation Defence Force has managed to destroy most of the various Maskirovka formations and safe houses on the planet, but only at the cost of half their remaining strength. They are almost pathetically grateful to surrender to the Old Guard and accept the offer of being merged into Lockhardt's Ironsides new mercenary formation. Which includes being dispatched far from any Liao reprisals.

Cordiagr

The Home Guard of Cordiagr had never thought they would be called to front line service, and when they were called up to resist the hated Davion invaders fully a third of them didn't turn up. As the 3rd FedSun's Dragoons RCT burned in planet another third promptly deserted rather than face a full Davion RCT. When the 3rd landed on the 24th of February the remaining few Home Guard troops melted away or surrendered.

Bandora

The 12th Vegan Ranger's Gamma regiment, until now held in reserve was rushed through to the front and dispatched to take the world of Bandora along with 2 full conventional infantry brigades from the AFFS. The Home Guard formations that are all that the planet has to defend itself with do their best to resist the invaders, but the Ranger's Gamma regiment, newly reinforced with a full company of factory fresh Shadow Hawk's soon routs them and secures the key locations on planet while the infantry brigades fan out to secure the secondary locations and hunt down the few holdouts.

Overton

While the Vegan Ranger's Gamma regiment is securing the world of Bandora, their sister regiment is landing on the world of Overton. The rebuilding Delta regiment lacks the skill of their sister regiments who have already been deployed and still only numbers roughly 2 battalions of battlemechs but is backed up by a veteran conventional armour brigade and 3 brigades of infantry. Facing off against a poorly equipped Home Guard the Delta's inexperience leads to a few initial losses but the result is never in doubt. By the end of February the Overton Home Guard have surrendered on good terms due to their initial small victories.

Bithinia

The local Home Guard are bolstered by the security forces of the Bithinia Ballistics company. This allows them to field a short battalion of battlemech's - most of them equipped with excellent autocannons. Usually this world would have a unit of the regular CCAF to bolster the defences, but the CCAF is collapsing on all fronts and the world is left to it's own defences. The 3rd Ceti Hussars RCT is almost unopposed on the burn in and when it lands finds the Home Guard preparing to defend the city and the huge industrial complexes of Bithinia Ballistics in a series of hastily built fortifications.

As the Ceti Hussar's approach the defensive works the turrets and troops of Bithinia Ballistics turn their guns on roughly half the Home Guard troops - joined in their betrayal by the remaining half of the Home Guard. The executives of the company have no desire to see their factory gutted in the crossfires and have given orders to their own security forces and "friends" in the Home Guard to ensure this doesn't happen.

With a sour taste in their mouth at the aid from the treacherous company and it's minions the 3rd Ceti Hussars take control of the planet. Making a point to disarm the remaining "defenders". Just in case.

Propus

The 1st Capellan Dragoons arrived in orbit of Propus just in time to take the worlds surrender. Less than half the Home Guard were still at their posts and 7 out of the 8 formations that were approaching combat ready strength had announced their intent to surrender when the planetary Duke bowed to reality and surrendered. The Dragoons would spend the next 2 months hunting down the handful of Liao loyalists who had attempted to continue the fight.

Masterson

The 4th Davion Guards RCT didn't expect much of a fight from the Masterson Home Guard formations. They weren't wrong. After a half hour "battle" to resist the Davion Guard's landing's the few Home Guard formations in the field lay down their arms and surrendered.

Purvo

The half strength 9th Sian Dragoons had seemingly been forgot about on the increasingly isolated world of Purvo. This (in the circumstances) fortunate state of affairs came to an end on the 11th February when the mercenary Hansen's Roughriders accompanied the 1st Crucis Lancers RCT to take the system for House Davion. Releasing the Roughrider's to do what they did best - namely hunt down and destroy the enemy forces, the 1st Crucis Lancers swiftly began securing the planet while backing up the mercenary's hunt for the 9th Dragoons in the wilderness in which they had scattered into. This attempt to pursue a guerrilla warfare strategy would ensure that the 9th wasn't immedietly wiped out, but the green unit would slowly be hunted down and either forced to surrender or be destroyed throughout February and March.

Sendalor

St Cyr's Armoured Hussar's 2 battalions of green troops had watched as the CCAF and indeed the Confederation collapsed around them with a growing sense of fatalism. As far as their troops were concerned it was only a matter of time before the Davion's came for them and when they did they knew they stood little chance of repulsing any proper invasion. So it was with a sense of doom that they recieved the news that 2 regiments of the Blue Star Irregular's and a single corvette had jumped into the system and was making their way towards Sendalor.

While the 1894th Light Horse and the 21st Rim Worlds regiments had already seen fighting during Operation Rat III they were combined still able to put between them 5 battalions and 2 command companies of elite or veteran mechwarrior's into the field, in stark contrast to the slightly under strength 2 battalions of green troops that the defender could muster. While the Armoured Hussar's were also able to call upon the support of a large and relatively well equipped force of Home Guard conventional units these were more than matched by the 3 mixed brigades of conventional AFFS troops that New Avalon had attached to them. Which left out the sheer intimidation factor of the Fredessa class corvette which was supporting the Blue Star Irregulars.

St Cyr's Armoured Hussars attempted as best they could to fight a conventional defensive campaign against the Irregulars, trading space for time, fighting delaying engagements before falling back slowly. In the end too slowly. The 21st Rim World's managed to hook a fast battalion of cavalry mech's around their flank during one of these retreats, pinning the Armoured Hussar's 2nd battalion in place for the assault of the rest of the 21st. When the 1st battalion of the Hussar's attempted to come to their companion's aid the 1894th swiftly took advantage of this and surrounded them. After a few more hours fighting the few survivors of the Armoured Hussar's were all prisoners of the Blue Star Irregulars. However their "clean" fighting resulted in the Irregulars treating their prisoners well and indeed at the end of the war absorbing nearly a company's worth of them into their own ranks.

With the destruction of the CCAF regular forces on the planet the Home Guard units which remained soon either disbanded or surrendered.

Housekarle

The Sirdar CMM arrived in the Housekarle system and was promptly contacted by the local authorities to offer their surrender. Having taken one look at the ramshackle nature of the Home Guard forces on the planet the the planetary Duke had realised that any attempt to resist the invaders was doomed to failure, even against a second line formation like the Sirdar CMM. Even if by a miracle they were able to hold out the only end result would be further fighting as the AFFS sent additional troops. Better to avoid the destruction altogether.

Summary

With 11 worlds secured for House Davion and Capella under siege Operation Rat III's Fourth Wave was considered a resounding success for the AFFS. Combined with the total destruction of the Liao Commonality (with the exception of Sarna itself which was under heavy siege) the High Command was extremely satisfied with how the war was going. However cracks were beginning to develop. While Sian was now almost within reach of the victorious AFFS formations, more and more issues were developing with supporting the offensive. Jumpships were beginning to require maintenance. Conventional brigades were tied down in occupation duties and unable to continue to press on, while newly raised formations were struggling to reach the front. Replacement personnel and equipment were beginning to lag behind the front lines advance. So far things were going well, but even with the pause in December and heroic efforts to extend the supply lines to meet the needs of the front things were beginning to fray. Marshal of the Armies Jackson Davion was forced to inform the First Prince during February that if he intended to conquer Sian itself then either it must be done soon or a break called in offensive operations to prepare for a final push on to Sian... A break that might require at least 3 months of buildup before offensive operations could resume at the level they were currently at.

They need to take Capella and Sarna first and then maybe call a halt to offensive operation the way the tempo has been going they need time to move up replacements and supplies to units as well as secure their conquests and root out any mask agents.

Even the mighty Davion warmachine is going to struggling under the strain of this offensive, and that'll have knock on effects with the econimy. Is it a case of 'one last push' and a decapitation strike or do they call an operational hault.

That or blockade Sian with the fleet to keep it isolated from the rest of the sphere.

Uch, Fire your High Command Victor, this kind of go/no go decision should have been made months ago and logistics prepared accordingly rather than flying by the seat of your pants like a Kurita  :P

With that said - especially with the Kuritas border looking increasingly like a war is going to break out, now is the time to call a halt. There isn’t honestly much Liao can do but wait anyway, what with his key units and nodal reaction forces obliterated, his warships dead and his sanity slipping.

3 days or 3 months at this point honestly makes little difference.

But fire his fleet commanders too who decided to bumrush his corvettes at enemy warships rather than throwing carefully constructed combined arms task forces at each while keeping a reserve force handy. Seriously, the ******!? Perhaps some of his naval officers need to train with his RCTs for a while...

Still it probably gives the chance to upgrade those damaged Fox Is to Fox IIs, so silver lining and all that...

I wonder if we’ll see Baxter outright declare independence shortly and invite surviving CCAF units to GTFO to him. Even better, if he’ll then publicly invite Victor to recognise his new nation and sign a formal peace treaty on good terms, just needing him to abandon recognition of the exiled Andurien Government...

Too bad about Hell’s Black Aces really, but they made their choice. Yet another Merc crew who went down and died at the hands of their crazy commanders as much as the enemy :(

"I, the Baron of Strang, care not for your new names. Clans? Jade Falcons? I call you by your true name: Scum of the Star League, traitors of free will, persecutors of the Periphery come back to lord it over freedom-loving people. Come ahead, you steel-eyed robots! Come ahead and taste what a million like-minded people think of you and your damn Clans!"

not having enough jumpships comes up and bites someone...again.

And now we know why liberty and victory ships in WW2 was so important.  I do have a quiston about the WD.  are they looking at an 85ton Mad IIC or would it be a 100ton Mad II with Clan tech.  I would go with a 100ton Mad II (maybe call it a Mad IIIC)

a 100ton Mad II is synonymous of the WD.... and every one loves a c-note massed mech.   >:D
