OK! Edited my post accordingly. Be careful with the Stone Rhino - there's a total of five variants and I know my record sheets are missing two for some reason.

Five? The only ones I know of are the orginal, the Scorps retrofit and the Hell's Horses super Rifleman IIC.  Was one a IS tech version that Sarna mentions?  I know about the other two from my TRO back at home.

Scratch that, make that 6 distinct variants according to the MUL. Megamek has them, but I have no way of crosschecking their data to make sure their error-free.

Blimey :s I thought there was just three and wondering how I was gonna pad it out to make the article not be shorter than a gnats leg :s Where the HELL are these other variants, I assume they are unique singletons?

Looks like it's from vidya: http://bg.battletech.com/forums/ask-the-writers/behemoth-%28stone-rhino%29-4-5-and-6/

All three are IS Clan General in terms of availability...so looks like they were production models or common refits. And their intro dates are 4, 5, 1, 6, 2, 3. Something seems wrong, I'm posting about it in the MUL errata thread.

Hmm but finding what they had will be an issue :s I doubt they are even canon and the only ones that are, are the classic the II and III.  Also is there a way to strikethrough text?

If they're on the MUL, they're canon. I'd wait until the MUL guys get back to us before writing the article.

For strikethrough text, press "reply" instead of "quick reply" to get it as an option. It's on the upper left side, next to bold, italic, etc.

They're in an Unabridged RS volume, not an April Fools release.  They're definitely canon.

Remember that in terms of production dates, the numbering system is the sequence in which the Inner Sphere got a look at them. So, the 4 and 5 were created before the 1, but weren't known about until recently in the Sphere.

Yep, that's the same answer I got in the MUL thread. Makes complete sense, although kinda creates a situation where they might be the Behemoth 4/Stone Rhino 1 and Behemoth 5/Stone Rhino 2...but at that point, who cares.

When I wrote the article on the Marauder IIc, I ran into that issue. IIRC, the 8 model came after the 1, but before the rest.

Ahyup! I do have that Kingfisher up. Alas, I will be offline this weekend, starting tomorrow (and 6+ hours before US timezones). If anyone has anything at the ready, please post that. But to avoid the Fire Falcon confusion: I do have the Kingfisher in store.

Is there a Celerity article anywhere in the near future?
If there isn't, I'll ask a question in the forum but if there is, I'll hold off, so as to avoid a repeat of what I did with the Machina Domini.

I was going to try and do the Koshi Standard, but with everything else going on, in my life (moving, work, etc) --- there is no way I can do it in a timely manner. So, if someone else wants to grab it, go for it...... once things calm down for me, I will take a look, and if it is still not done, by then, I will pick it back up.

I'm sorely tempted to try and do like GreekFire has done and go through every 'Mech from the very first (chronologically) to the most recent - and focus on the Alpha Strike component to each.  I've fallen deeply, deeply in love with Alpha Strike, to the point where I'd wager that I've got a better perspective on it than 99% of posters or players.

I just don't know if Alpha Strike is enough to build articles on, since the unit's record sheet definitely comes first.  I could probably go through and start with old 'Mechs and add a little Alpha Strike post to the end of them, but that feels... incomplete, somehow.  Especially the older ones.

Maybe focus on say a lance or a star of them at a time, or compare AS performance to what people expect from the units in standard play.

This is a fantastic idea, particularly the latter.  Alpha Strike is different enough that some of the major changes are non-obvious.

Maybe additionally organize them by roles? Like comparing the Juggernauts generally used by X faction during the Y era, and then contrasting the advantages/weaknesses of each with those of their standard BattleTech counterparts?

I really agree that having some Alpha Strike write-ups would be great, 'specially since it's a system that fewer people are familiar with.

That's also a good idea, but I think it loses something since different variants of a given 'Mech can be different in just a couple key ways, and still end up different roles.  I'm halfway through the article I wanted to write for Friday, and the very first two variants of the Mackie are different roles - one Juggernaut, one Sniper.  I'd have to split up the 'Mech variants more than I'm comfortable doing in order to do that as part of the XotW format.  I may do, as you've done with Protos, a guide to Alpha Strike tactics and roles, but that would be something of a different method.

That said!  I'm currently halfway through the article I wanted to write for Friday, and I'm already getting close to page three - after two Mackie variants.  It appears my fears of not being able to fill an article were entirely unfounded. :D

I'd recommend explaining the Alpha Strike system to total newbies a bit as well, might get new people interested. Though perhaps that deserves its own article.

Mackie article is up.  It's a doozy.

An article explaining basic Alpha Strike concepts that don't translate easily to the tactical game will be forthcoming within the first few articles.  It's needed fairly badly, I think.
