Stone class RoRo transport vessel (pre-22nd century)
« on: 21 July 2018, 09:40:48 »
Another Tech Level C large naval, this time modelled after the Point class of RoRo vessels that are owned by the British military and partially chartered out to civilian service. Engine and fuel match up exactly, as do even crew numbers - although the fuel load only if we assume that supercharger use does not increase fuel consumption (i've so far not found any indication otherwise).

The vehicle load is a bit iffy, but actually surprisingly matches up very well too: The Point class may carry 189+189 trailers on two decks, while giving a capacity of 8000 tons. If we assume tractor-trailer combinations at the exact average of a medium wheeled support vehicle - 42.5 tons, which is realistic for current vehicles - then we get exactly 188 tractor-trailer combinations.
Vehicles are loaded as cargo, not in bays in order to get the numbers and since despite it being called roll-on-roll-off it's not like you can drive a vehicle off the ship straight onto the highway. The 35-minute checkup maintenance prescribed by SO sounds about right as a delay after unloading.

Since the Point class are notionally military, while they are not armed, they carry a helipad and hangar space for four helicopters. This is reflected here as well. The container cargo capacity - imagine them just planted on the top deck - is an extra for the Stone class (technically making her a ConRo), and used to round out full deep load capacity.

Nicely done, though I'd still advocate for the extra three tons of communications equipment to enable SATCOM.

On a transport ship where it's completely viable to just roll out a vehicle as a satcom relay onto the (flight) deck?

For a mere three tons, it's worth it not to have to try to move a stowed vehicle up on deck, much less in the weather...
