Right. Figured I'd make a thread to toss my stuff into, since a few others have done the same.

Some things to bear in mind:

1) Most of the fluff for these entries are going to be written from the perspective of 3100, about 2 months after the turn of the century. I've been writing most these up for a side project of mine, which may or may not go anywhere. (PM me if you're interested, by the way.)

2) I use a lot of non-canon equipment, most of which is detailed in this thread here.

3) I may wind up doing designs that no designing software can currently handle (e.g. Semi-Primitive or super-heavy). In which case, feel free to point out my mistakes if you catch them.

4) Not all of these designs are going to be optimized. Also, some of them will only have a small blurb (in the style of TRO 3085's "Old is the New New" section) instead of a full writeup. But I'm *always* going to have at least some fluff for anything I post.

5) Feedback is always welcomed. :)

Centurion CN9-Ar2: IMC's Centurion, built under license while Jalastar was rebuilding from the Taurian suicide assault, improves armor over the classic model by a ton, adds a hatchet and CASE for the ammo, and upgrades the LRM rack to an MML-9 with an Artemis IV FCS imported from offworld. Like the CN9-Ar, the Ar2 uses double heat sinks. The autocannon is removed in favor of a trio of 'Mech-scale Heavy Recoilless guns, which sacrifice some of the AC-10's range, but are far lighter and are murderous against massed infantry.

Quickdraw QKD-5R: The Regulans have refitted their Quickdraws with a hotter, but arguably more effective array of weaponry. The arm-mounted medium lasers are upgraded to ER, while the torso lasers are mounted on the front and supplemented with a standard large laser in the left torso, replacing the LRM rack. The one-shot SRM launcher is replaced with a much lighter RL/10.

Overview:
   For several years, the Filtvelt Coalition built a local RetroTech copy of the ubiquitous Centurion medium 'Mech. Inferior armor plating and a heavier cockpit severely reduced its viability. One of the things Marquess Trempeleau and General LeBeau would publicly agree upon during their dispute over the Filtvelt Academy was the need for an eventual refit to the CN9-F once it was possible to do so. The outgrowth of these efforts became known as the CN9-Fr.

Capabilities:
   The Filtvelters' initial attempts at building their own Centurions, during the last years of the Jihad, were in very much the same vein as the Marian CN9-H variant, only with a locally-produced Improved Heavy Rifle in place of the imported LBX autocannon, and a brace of readily-available machine guns in place of the lasers. The CN9-F was also just as thin-skinned as the Marian BattleMech, albeit slightly more survivable due to the addition of CASE.

   While the structure and myomers of the CN9-Fr are still primitive-rated, and the engine is still rather inefficient as a result, the Filtvelters have come up with a few improvements. A modern cockpit was substituted for the clunky older version, which freed up two tons. Another ton of ammo for the main gun was added to the right torso bin.

   Far more importantly, the primitive steel plating of the CN9-F was completely replaced in favor of standard armor -- and more of it. Coalition Centurions are now comparable in durability and firepower to most older variants operated by FedSuns militias, which is no small feat for a cash strapped Periphery state.

Deployment:
   The CN9-Fr is a common medium 'Mech among the four regiments of the Filtvelt Militia, having supplanted all of the primitive CN9-F's in circulation. While the Coalition's well-trained pilots have been quite successful at using this substandard equipment to cleanse their realm of pirate raiders, there is considerable skepticism as to whether it will be effective for long, should House Davion decide to reabsorb their wayward brethren by force.

Overview:

   The discovery last year of the experimental super-heavy Jotun project led to some dismay among Republic Intel analysts, many of whom were not happy to see another Great House so blatantly ignore the mutual drawdown of military forces. Apparently the entire Mech was built around a copy of a Star League Railgun, which is the epitome of impractically large weaponry to those few who know of its history among Amaris' forces. However, it should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone that this Mech was conceived by the Lyrans, in a joint venture between TharHes and Defiance no less.


Capabilities:

   Defiance custom-built the Jotun as a Super-Heavy quad chassis, for the greatest possible stability when firing the massive Railgun built into the left torso. They turned to TharHes for their greater experience dealing with high-recoil weapons on quad chassis, agreeing to jointly produce the design and share the profits if it was approved by the Archon and LCAF Command.

   The Railgun itself is able to cripple almost anything short of an assault Mech in one shot, at long range. This quality seems to have endeared it to a few Lyran military planners, despite the extreme recoil, barrel wear, ammo limitations, and relatively high heat buildup intrinsic to the weapon. The test pilots were advised to lie the Mech down on the ground, preferably behind cover. This was intended to limit the possibility of damaging the Mech when firing the oversized cannon.

   To defend itself against targets up-close, the Jotun mounts a pair of the new Micro Pulse Lasers in a gimballed mount just under the cockpit, as well as a pair of ER Medium Lasers in the chest. Its main defenses, however, are an extended-range PPC and an Ultra autocannon mounted in a turret. This allows the Jotun to protect itself against enemies attacking from outside its forward firing arc. The Ultra AC/20 in particular is a magnificent deterrent against "rushdown" Mechs.

   The Jotun uses a Light Engine to save weight, and mounts twenty-five tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor to protect it. However, due to its weight, it is a horrendously slow and ponderous design, barely able to keep up with an Urbanmech or Annihilator at its fastest. Between that and its incredible size, it would attract a disproportionate amount of enemy fire if it were ever placed on the battlefield. The TharHes and Defiance designers recommended the Jotun be deployed only as part of a major force, where it could be properly escorted.


Deployment:

   Only four of these giant monstrosities were completed at Hesperus II. The Archon seems to dislike the Jotun on principle, seeing it as a "white elephant" which would be too difficult for the LCAF to deploy. The prototypes still remain in service for now, guarding the Hesperus facility, but it's doubtful they'll see any action before they're inevitably dismantled.


Variants:

   There are no known variants of the Jotun at this time.


3145 Addendum:

   The Jotun was indeed never put into full production. The mothballed prototypes were reactivated during the fierce fighting on Hesperus, but were too slow to do anything but defend -- though they did obliterate a surprising number of Jade Falcon 'Mechs before being overwhelmed.

That Filtvelt Centurion's not that bad at all.

Danke. :) I wanted to get as close to the CN9-A in performance as possible using the tech levels I'd established for the FvC, with a "no imported stuff" caveat -- hence why it uses MGs instead of lasers.

A few of their other designs, like the Mech I'm about to repost, don't have that restriction...

Overview:

   Over the past two decades, the Filtvelt Coalition has been working to provide its Citizen's Militias with enough vehicles and 'Mechs to repulse constant pirate attacks, relying heavily on what they can produce domestically. This has amounted to low-tech VTOLs and planes, some patrol hovercraft, and a smattering of light and medium RetroTech 'Mechs.

   What Filtvelt's forces lacked, however, was heavy firepower. While they were able to procure a handful of Hawkwolf and Dervish fire support 'Mechs from the Brotherhood of Randis, this was insufficient for the Militia's needs. Unable to import sufficient firepower, the invention of Improved Rifles in 3086 allowed the Coalition the opportunity to build it for themselves, in the form of heavy tanks and a Primitive-style assault 'Mech known as the Megaera.


Capabilities:

   The Megaera takes a lot of its design from the old Lyran Ymir, whose blueprints have been readily available since 3075. The fusion engine and myomers are locally produced on Filtvelt; while the 325-rated fusion engine is built to modern standards, the myomers are not. Apparently the Coalition is now able to produce modern myomers in small quantities, but they have so much of this substandard myomer stockpiled that military planners are forced to continue using it.

   The primary firepower for the Megaera comes from a pair of Improved Heavy Rifles. This barely matches the damage output of a Succession War-era Warhammer or Hammerhands, and has problems with recoil and accuracy to boot. However, this is outweighed in the designers' eyes by the fact that the oversized cannons can be locally produced.

   The cannons have two other major advantages; firstly, they can accept multiple types of ammo for changing tactical situations. The other advantage is that, like the smaller Arbiter before it, the Megaera looks as though it's carrying much more powerful weaponry than it actually is -- a prime concern when dealing with pirates who are looking for an easy score rather than a tough fight.

   Unusually for a RetroTech design, the Megaera mounts a cockpit that is up to modern standards, and more crucially, CASE in each side torso. This protects not only the ammo for the main cannons, but also the ammo for a pair of Multiple Missile Launchers. Most of these launchers are imported, but in the past three years Filtvelt has begun producing their own. A single medium laser, mounted in the head, rounds out the Megaera's weaponry.

   When the design was first produced, the Megaera relied on substandard armor plating which was far simpler for Filtvelt's patchy industry to produce. This gave the early prototypes protection about on par with the old Warhammer. Modern armor has given this design roughly 50 percent more survivability, allowing it to perform as a real assault 'Mech.


Deployment:

   Most of the Megaeras that have been produced in the past decade and a half are tasked with defending factories and urban areas on Broken Wheel or Filtvelt itself. As with all Coalition-produced 'Mechs, Megaeras are being distributed between the four Citizen's Militia regiments. Due to the greater defensive needs of the two main industrial worlds under the Coalition's control, however, the lion's share of Megaera production goes to the First and Fourth FCM.

   What all this indicates to some observers is that the Coalition is considering their realm's long-term defensive viability. Should the assault-heavy Thumpers decide not to renew their long-term defense contract with the breakaway realm, the FvC would be forced to rely almost exclusively on natively-produced designs for their heavy firepower.


Variants:

   The original version of the Megaera, the MGA-1F, mounted a primitive cockpit and armor. The armament consisted of standard Heavy Rifles, along with much simpler SRM-6 launchers rather than the MMLs. Only five were produced this way, and none ever saw combat. All have since been upgraded to the 2F standard.

   Two pilots in the Fourth FCM have replaced one of the cannons with a PPC and additional heat sinks. As no energy weapons are manufactured within Coalition borders, it's unlikely this simple-yet-effective modification will be able to catch on.


3145 Addendum:

   The MGA-3F uses standard myomers and construction, allowing for the use of a smaller, more efficient 270-rated engine. This has allowed the Coalition to upgrade its armament significantly, adding another pair of MML racks and changing out the main guns for LB-10X autocannons. Older chassis have been upgraded to something similar to this standard (the MGA-3R) and are identical apart from their inferior internal construction. These 'Mechs are staples of the Thumper Assault Regiment.

   Meanwhile, the Combine invaders have made heavy use of hardened and ballistic-reinforced armor. Some Megaeras have already been converted to use Large Re-Engineered Lasers (and extra heat sinks) to counter it; however the Coalition cannot, as yet, produce any such lasers themselves and are reliant on Davion supplies for any such refits.

Overview:
In the wake of the invasion of Luthien and the destruction of LAW, the DCMS was in dire need of new Mechs to hold the line. Furthermore, a fair amount of old surplus equipment was sitting in storage. A group of Kurita 'Techs on New Samarkand decided to use the latter problem to solve the former, creating the 100-ton Kujira (Japanese for "whale") in the process.


Capabilities:
From the start, the project heads at LAW knew they would be working from a very unstable and eclectic supply base, even after the project received the belated blessing of the Coordinator. As such, the project leads resolved from the start to use commonly available materials and stockpiles of old parts.

One major source of these parts was a large number of 400-rated standard engines left over from Charger upgrades. An old Magna Hellstar PPC is the main long-range weapon on the Kujira, while short-range firepower is provided by a pair of medium lasers. One is a pulse model, while the other is an Argra 3L, the same model used for centuries on the Jenner. In melee, the Kujira can also put its massive battlefists to work, as well as a samurai-style katana; both are augmented by triple-strength myomer.

The Kujira's chassis is a modified version of the Atlas's venerable framework, although the Kujira's appearance is quite different, due mainly to the use of bulky ferro-fibrous armor. That said, there are a number of similarities for those who know where to look, with one telltale sign being the use of the Atlas' hip mount.

This also has logistical benefits, as many of the parts are interchangeable with those of the Atlas. It also has drawbacks, such as the now-pointless CASE in the left torso. There is no ammunition to actually protect there -- the CASE is a holdover from the first production model, which was retained on the basis of potential refits.


Deployment:
Most of the two-hundred-odd examples of the Kujira serve in militia forces along the Combine's borders with the Federated Suns and the Periphery. While not popular machines by any means, Kujiras are nonetheless seen as welcome additions to garrisons stripped clean by constant supply problems.

In recent years, the Kujira looks as though it will become one of the first casualties of the mutual drawdown of the myriad House militaries. While the DCMS is still ordering them in small quantities, it seems most of the newly produced Kujiras are being mothballed as a hedge against future conflict.


Variants
The KJA-1K lacked triple-strength myomer, the medium pulse laser, and the sword, instead mounting a machine gun array and several additional heat sinks. Several of the earliest models also lacked the aesthetic samurai helmet, though such a cosmetic alteration was easy to accomplish in successive refits.

A relatively common refit for those who can procure the parts, involves downgrading the PPC to a large laser, and adding a pair of small lasers (one extended-range). This allows for better TSM heat management at the expense of range. Another ton of armor is also added to give the KJA-2R better protection.


3145 Addendum:
The Blackout and the subsequent collapse of much of the Republic led, inevitably, to the reactivation and deployment of these 'Mechs. As expected, they have primarily served in garrison roles well behind the lines, and thus are seldom seen in the current conflict.

Vulture Katherine:
   Star Commander Katherine managed to survive Operation Bulldog thanks largely to her considerable gunnery skills, which also earned her the Furey bloodname. She joined Marcus Kotare's renegade forces on the far-flung planet of Cermak, where a long-buried component vault yielded a massive weapon the Star League had shelved: the Railgun.
   She decided to kit out her Vulture with this oversized weapon, which required a lighter engine, less armor, and a near-total rebuild of the upper torso. But by her standards, it was worth it -- the Railgun could one-shot any opponent she faced in combat, even if the recoil did nearly knock over her 'Mech several times. This allowed her to rapidly rise in rank to Nova Captain.
   Unfortunately for Furey, she had become overconfident as a result of these easy victories. She was caught alone and off guard by two fast 'Mech lances from the 1st Davion Guards. Unable to destroy enough of the Spheroids with her oversized weapon, her glass cannon of a 'Mech was rapidly dispatched in a hail of laser fire. She became a bondsman, and was later killed on New Syrtis along with the majority of the unit in 3063.

I've always had a weird fascination with the thoroughly subpar standard AC/5 for some reason. So when an Enforcer refit thread came up, I had to give this a try.


Enforcer ENF-4D: This refit of the 4R removes the main weapons in favor of a pair of class-5 autocannons and two tons of ammo. Despite the Davions' love of autocannons, it never had the damage levels it needed to catch on during the brutal Succession Wars. (BV: 873)

Enforcer ENF-4Dr: This minor refit of the 4D removes a heat sink to add CASE and upgrade the laser to an ER medium. It is significantly more popular than its progenitor ever was, due to the availability of special ammunition for the autocannons, and the much-improved secondary armament. (BV: 981)

Overview:
   As part of Precentor St. Jamais' call for new 'Mechs to bolster Blakist forces, the Incursus -- billed as "able to out-Awesome the Awesome" -- was put forward in 3062 and rejected in favor of the Vanquisher. The Word's forces went to war with the rest of the Inner Sphere half a decade later; after a factory expansion, the design was brought back for production at Skobel Mechworks in 3069.


Capabilities:
   Built on a revamped King Crab chassis, the Incursus was meant from the start to carry a brace of energy weapons. No less than five particle projection cannons are mounted to the 'Mech, a level of firepower which some consider overkill. A pair of medium lasers serve as backup weapons, should opponents come too close.
   The incredible heat generated by all these weapons is daunting, to say the least. An alpha strike can easily overwhelm the Incursus' double-strength freezers, despite the fact that twenty of them are crammed into the design. Nonetheless, they were highly accurate thanks to the power of the Blakists' ubiquitous C3i system.
   Because of the immense amount of space occupied by the weapons and heat sinks, the designers at Skobel were unable to use bulky Endo Steel construction or special armor. This did at least cut down on costs; there was more than enough tonnage left over to mount a full complement of standard armor, matching the venerable Atlas in durability.
   Between these thick slabs of armor, and the total lack of ammunition explosion hazards, the Incursus is a classic "zombie" design, able to take obscene levels of damage and continue functioning. This quality was only improved by the use of a 300-rated Light engine, which avoids the fragility of an XL. The maximum speed of 54kph is about average for a 100 ton assault 'Mech.


Deployment:
   The production record of the Incursus is quite short, lasting a scant nine years. During that time, the Incursus was provided to a number of Protectorate forces and friendly mercenary units, who were both highly appreciative of the 'Mech's incredible battlefield longevity and heavy firepower.
   The Skobel factory was damaged in the fighting between Blakist and Coalition forces during the invasion of Terra. RAF procurement is quite interested in having Skobel restart production of the durable 'Mech, but the Incursus' blueprints were deliberately scrambled by ROM operatives before Coalition troops could completely capture the factory, and no backups have been found as yet.


Variants:
   Most users were content with the standard equipment. However a few operators used experimental equipment to modify their Incursi. Three of the PPCs are replaced with extended-range versions, while the other two are exchanged for their snub-nosed cousins. The extra two tons freed up by this conversion are used to add a pair of coolant pods, which are absolutely vital if the Mechwarrior decides to alpha strike.
   With the downfall of the Blakists, the C3i system has become effectively defunct. Standard practice is to discard it in favor of an ECM suite and a C3 Slave. Most captured Incursi that have been put back into service following the Word's disintegration follow some variation on this theme.


3145 Addendum:
   The Incursus was a fairly rare chassis post-Jihad, and many wound up being mothballed or scrapped outright. Captured chassis have occasionally wound up reactivated and in the hands of just about any faction operating within Republic borders, but most are still in RAF hands. Some have been modified with Radical Heat Sink technology or TSEMP weaponry.

This is the first custom design I ever wrote down stats and fluff for. Fluff has been updated somewhat.

I originally thought it up because I read the Blood Asp's TRO and thought "Wait.. that bulky, XL, shoulder-gunned, heavily-armed chicken-walker... was based on a slender, standard, on-the-cheap man-walker like the Kingfisher? No way." So I thought about what sort of roles or weapon combinations weren't filled by existing 3025/2750 mechs and came up with this as a Star League precursor to the Blood Asp.

And now, on to the fluff.

Overview

The Forseti was originally designed to counter the venerable AWS-8Q Awesome. As such, it mounted considerable long-range weaponry and could devastate many foes with a single alpha strike. It was easily recognized by its distinctive shoulder-mounted PPCs and the missile launcher mounted in the very center of its chest.


Capabilities

The Forseti, though slow and somewhat ponderous, was devastatingly powerful. It was arguably more well-rounded than the energy-reliant Awesome, and mounted more defensive weaponry, with four medium lasers as opposed to the Awesome's single small laser. As a counterpart to the Awesome, the Forseti mounts the same amount of heavy armor as its better-known brethren.

However, the Forseti quickly garnered a reputation as a heatmonger. Its detractors often pointed out that close-in, its heat scale runs off the charts, and it was difficult for a Forseti to engage fast mechs at close range. Furthermore, it required ammunition for its missile launcher to remain at full effectiveness -- ammunition that often exploded due to the 'Mech's heat problems.

Finally, there was the question of the 'Mech's speed. While it was indeed suitable for many Steiner formations, it was still too slow to engage in running battles -- a tendency which many of the Lyran realm's enemies have long used to their advantage.


Deployment

Defiance Industries built the Forseti from 2748 until 2787, at which point the line was closed down in favor of producing the Zeus BattleMech. About half of the surviving Forsetis, along with their pilots, are now known to have left with General Kerensky after the Amaris Civil War. The remaining examples of the design lingered on in service until about midway through the Third Succession War, when the last known Forseti in the Inner Sphere was destroyed in a skirmish with Marik raiders.

Comstar's records indicate that Nondi Steiner and then-Archon Katherine Steiner-Davion mulled over the possibility of resurrecting the Forseti during the Civil War, but ultimately the idea was vetoed in favor of an even heavier (and equally slow) design, which became the Fafnir.

As for the Forsetis taken to Clan space, Comstar found that most of them were destroyed during the bloody wars that wracked the Pentagon Worlds. Those few that escaped destruction are believed to have been in the posession of the Star Adders, thanks in large part to their absorption of Clan Burrock.

It is quite obvious in hindsight that these cached Forsetis must have been the inspiration for the larger Blood Asp OmniMech, rather than the thoroughly dissimilar Kingfisher as Comstar alleged in their official Technical Readout.


Variants

There were three Forseti variants used by the LCAF. All of them addressed the mech's overwhelming heat problem. One downgraded the LRMs to a 10-rack and removes two of the lasers, while the second downgraded the shoulder-mounted PPCs to large lasers. The third variant replaced the LRM rack entirely, switching it out for an SRM6 and, again, additional heat sink allocation.

We have also learned from Diamond Shark traders that were also a few one-off variants of the Forseti used by the Pentagon powers, and even, very rarely, by the Burrocks and Star Adders later on. As of the time the Sharks left Clan space, there were less than ten operational Forsetis, but they seem very certain that none of these models have survived whatever happened there. If true, this design has finally been rendered extinct.

Tai-Sho TSH-7C3BM: Draconis Combine scientists have successfully reverse-engineered the Davions' C3 Boosted systems, which are immune to all but the toughest ECM. The Tai-sho, now manufactured in limited numbers on New Samarkand, is a natural choice for modification to mount these upgraded systems.

The autocannon is stripped out and replaced with a new LBX-15, while a pair of ER Micro Lasers are mounted in the head for a modicum of additional defense. A small cockpit and XL gyro are used to lighten the load, while downgrading the armor from standard ferro to light ferro frees up sorely-needed space for the upgraded battle computers.

The limited availability of many of these components within Combine space, and the limited deployment of Boosted C3 systems in DCMS units thus far, means this variant will likely be rare for the forseeable future.

Overview:

   While the Grasshopper has never been produced in terribly large numbers, its incredible durability under fire and its high degree of maneuverability have kept losses quite low, greatly endearing the 'Mech to its pilots. In the centuries before the design's rebirth on Hun Ho and Arc-Royal it was also noted for its ruggedness; despite relatively limited spare part production during the Succession Wars, damaged Grasshoppers could very often be returned to full functionality with a minimum of fuss (assuming the missile launcher's ammo bin hadn't been breached, of course).

   In many ways, however, the RAF's increasing use of the Grasshopper post-Jihad has more to do with internal politics than any of these qualities. It can't even be said to fill a distinct combat role -- the Republic does, after all, field Irian's Guillotine and Prefect rather prominently, both of which ably fulfill the "agile heavy combatant" role.

   Therein, however, lies the problem. Irian. Even as the fractured company continues to rebuild itself, Exarch Stone and other Republic planners are wary of the industrial giant gaining the kind of sway over policy it once enjoyed under the Free Worlds League. As a result there has been some discreet investment in several of their competitors, such as Kallon's small 'Mech plant on Asuncion, left largely undamaged by the Jihad.


Capabilities:

   Working from reconstructed blueprints, the Kallon engineers were able to build a very close facsimile of the original chassis, with a few minor alterations. The first major departure from the Succession War-era blueprints came with the decision to use a heavier Compact Engine for even greater durability under fire, with triple-strength myomer augmenting the engine's power under high heat conditions. However the Compact Engines have to be shipped in from Terra, as the Compact 280 had to be put into production specifically for this design.

   The second major external change was the switch to ferro-fibrous armor plating, which, when taken together with the use of a few Crusader-derived chassis alterations, lends the RAF Grasshopper a somewhat different silhouette from its older forebear.

   The weaponry on the GHR-7H follows a familiar layout, at least. In the center torso lies the 'Mech's primary weapon, in this case a snub-nose PPC. Next to it, each side torso mounts a common medium pulse laser. Each arm mounts an ER Medium Laser and a battle fist. Finally, the head-mounted missile launcher has been disposed of, in favor of another medium laser, this time a standard one.

   The addition of a quartet of ER Micro Lasers, reverse-engineered from Capellan models, has raised some eyebrows. While the official explanation for their inclusion is to allow the pilot greater control over the 'Mech's heat, some suspect other motives for their inclusion, especially given how limited the ER Micro's production has been in the Republic thus far. One commentator has even accused Kallon of adding them simply because they couldn't decide what to do with the last free ton on the design.


Deployment:

   The IV Hastati, being based on Asuncion, bears the largest concentration of GHR-7Hs in the RAF. Other RAF 'Mech regiments are receiving small numbers of this rugged heavy 'Mech, with the lion's share of the remainder going to Terra and Epsilon Eridani.

   Older -5H, -5J, -C and -5N models are still reasonably common in the rest of the Inner Sphere, even after the Blakists did their best to make use of everything they could get a hold of. Many independent and mercenary 'MechWarriors still modify these, largely in an effort to do away with the ammo stores for the missile launcher. The -5Hr is a common refit along these lines.


Variants:

   The most common variant of the RAF Grasshopper, the GHR-7I, strips the rare micro lasers in favor of a single small pulse laser to fill out the center torso. The GHR-7J does this while also upgrading the medium pulse lasers to X-Pulses. The 7JC is a 7J with the small pulse replaced by a C3 Slave. Meanwhile, the GHR-7R variant, with a more commonly available standard engine and improved jump jets, has also been tested, but has not yet been put into production.

   On Arc-Royal, a minor variant of the GHR-7P has surfaced, replacing the X-Pulse lasers with ER PPCs for long-range sniping power. Meanwhile, production at LexaTech on Hun Ho continues apace, with the 7K variant having superceded the 6K due to its freedom from logistical concerns. The fact that Guided Technologies' Streak SRM plant on Proserpina now lies within Republic territory likely had a hand in this decision as well.


3145 Addendum:
   The incredibly durable nature of the 7-series Grasshopper means that it invariably either gets destroyed outright or salvaged in working condition (or close to it). These machines have found their way into the military of every nation that's taken any Republic territory, but a slight majority are either within the Fortress or in the reborn Free Worlds League.

Jagermech JM6-B: A few Davion units during the War of 3039 attempted to confuse Kurita forces by refitting their Jagermechs with radically different weapons. The autocannons are replaced by LRM-15s and large lasers, with saved tonnage going to armor and heat sinks. Limited ammo and horrendous heat buildup limited this version's effectiveness, but the firepower was impressive while it lasted. Many mercenaries converted their Jagermechs to this variant in the following years.


The next variant is both simple and predictable.

Overview:
   The pirate forces led by Lady Death Trevaline not only put together the contraband Brigand, but also augmented their forces with a kludged-together medium 'Mech which they dubbed the Privateer. As the name was (unbeknownst to the pirates) already being used by a completely different 75-ton design, the pirates' medium Mech has been retroactively renamed the Privateer II to reduce confusion.


Capabilities:
   The Privateer II has always been built using whatever components can be stolen or salvaged. As such, it has no set "factory standard". The loadout designated as "standard" by the RAF simply happens to have been the most common one used on Malagrotta, and doesn't reflect the unpredictable variety of configurations that may be seen in action.
   Unsurprisingly, the chassis always uses standard alloys, endo steel being a rare prize reserved for Brigand construction. Trevaline ordered the designers to build a 'Mech of the medium class that could fulfill any combat role. The initial plans likely called for a 50-tonner, due to the greater ease of finding efficient engines for that weight class. The theft of a shipment of spare 275-rated extra-light engines resulted in the reinforcement of the chassis to carry 55 tons.
   The first thing many notice about the Privateer II is its large shoulder-mounted rack of rocket launchers. These give the medium 'Mech a powerful punch in close combat. The weapon mount can be changed out to carry other weaponry, though the power or ammunition linkages that result are exposed by necessity.
   Each arm, while lacking the hands necessary for snatch-and-grab operations, carries a machine gun as standard. The mounts are easily big enough to mount light autocannons, though, and a few pirates have added small rocket launcher pods to the arms as well.
   The left torso is where the majority of the weaponry lies, with a roomy area devoted to whatever stolen weaponry can be wedged into it. Most Privateer IIs on Malagrotta mounted a standard AC/5 and a large laser. Below the guns lies an ammo bin, which is protected by CASE -- likely purchased off the black market. A small mount just below the offset cockpit mounts a medium laser. Fourteen single heat sinks allow the Privateer II to remain relatively cool, unless the pilot is forced to fire off all his weapons at once.


Deployment:
   Despite being in the works from 3063 onward, the Privateer II was completely unknown to the rest of the Inner Sphere before 3070, when several were seen in a raid on Malagrotta. By this point, Lady Death Trevaline's pirate alliance had long since fractured, and many Privateer IIs had made their way into the hands of a wide variety of unsavory characters. When Trevaline herself was killed and the Death's Consorts took over the Cooperative in response, the pirate 'Mech became a symbol of their brutal occupation.
   Small numbers of Privateer IIs have trickled out of the Haven Cluster ever since the early 3070s, many destined for the black market. As such, they can be seen among mercenaries and pirates of every stripe, as well as Periphery states on occasion.


Variants:
   While investigating the history of this 'Mech has turned up a veritable cornucopia of variants, only two have been seen with any regularity besides the "standard" one.
   The first upgrades the Rocket Launcher system to Heavy Rockets, a special weapon system seen only rarely. While these oversized weapons are powerful, they are also incredibly unwieldy. Nonetheless, pirate units have sometimes brought HRLs into play, often causing widespread terror and havoc among civilian populations with Inferno ammunition. The AC/5 is removed to make room for the upgrade, and a pair of Inferno SRM-2s are added, one to each arm.
   The other major variant turns the Privateer II into a longer-ranged combatant, fitting an extended-range PPC in the torso along with two more heat sinks. The arm cannons are upgraded to Light AC/2s running off a single ton of ammo, with ten-pack rocket launchers slung underneath them, and two fifteen-pack rocket launchers on the shoulder mount.
   Numerous other variants abound, often using wildly different engine and weapon configurations. Few bother with jump jets, as the unbalanced frame makes flight dodgy at best. None of these variants, however, number more than four examples.


3145 Addendum:
   At some point or other in the early 3110s, production of the Privateer II hit a snag, either due to a shortage of usable engines or due to fighting among the pirates (there were conflicting reports from different groups of captured pirates). Whatever the reason, the factory evidently recovered enough to restart production by 3120, but thankfully the number of 'Mechs produced is well below its post-Jihad peak.

Overview:
   AFFC planners knew the invasion of Clan Smoke Jaguar would require a massive logistical undertaking. Early on, the decision was made to standardize the classes of 'Mechs that would participate in the initial invasion, so as to minimize the strain of supplying a widely varied force. It was little surprise that the Davions' common Centurion medium 'Mech would be a part of this.
   What many observers did not expect -- but in hindsight is perfectly clear -- is that some FedCom units were still quite wary of their old enemies in the Draconis Combine, and wanted to make certain the 'Mechs used in the invasion would be less useful to the DCMS if they were lost and later rebuilt.
   With the excuse that the standard Centurion was ill-suited to mount jump jets -- a requirement for deployment with Bulldog -- Corean Enterprises was ordered to rework the design to solve this problem. Corean engineers, pressed for time, created a version of the Centurion with 5 extra tons of weight. The formal classification of Centurion II for this up-tonned 'Mech was, for many years, only used internally by FedCom analysts.


Capabilities:
   While the excuse of the standard Centurion's problems mounting jump jets was quite truthful at the time, the tonnage change that resulted was primarily meant to deny the DCMS salvagable engines in weight classes they favored. As an added bonus, the DAV 220 extra-light engine was already being produced on New Avalon for use with the Fireball, and was perfectly suited for a 55-ton machine. The resultingly slow top speed was seen by AFFC Command as a plus, as newly-conscripted MechWarriors would thus be more likely to stay with the rest of their formation.
   The upper body of the Centurion II's chassis was only minimally modified from the standard Centurion, to handle additional weaponry and armor. The CN10-A mounted a full ten tons of ferro-fibrous armor, vastly improving its defenses vis-a-vis the original. Expensive endo-steel and double heat sinks were avoided, both due to a production bottleneck at the time and (once again) to deny any useful salvage to the DCMS.
   The armament of the CN10-A was the same as the old CN9-A, with an autocannon/10 in the right arm, two medium lasers (both forward-facing) in the center torso, and a long-range missile rack next to them. The AC/10 in question was the Federated version used by the Enforcer -- in some cases, taken from old Enforcers following upgrades. Ammunition levels were also the same as the CN9-A, though the CN10 at least used CASE to protect the ammo bin.
   

Variants:
   The CN10-W and CN10-J variants also shipped out with Bulldog. The former was an attempt to increase the 'Mech's weaponry by upgrading the heat sinks and stripping the lasers to mount a PPC in the left arm. The latter added four jump jets for greater tactical flexibility, sacrificing two single heat sinks to do so.
   Soon after the first wave of Bulldog was completed, the CN10-B was introduced, with an endo steel chassis, a standard engine, and changed weaponry. The autocannon was changed out for the shotgun-like LB 10-X of the CN9-D, the LRMs were augmented with Artemis IV, and one of the lasers was upgraded to a pulse version and moved to cover the rear. Five single heat sinks were removed, and the armor was downgraded to standard but increased in weight to eleven and a half tons.
   A short-lived close-combat variant was prototyped in the early 3060s and saw a very short production run before the Centurion II was discontinued altogether. Most of these were destroyed during the last stages of the Civil War, with the remainder lost during the Blakist invasion of New Avalon -- with the exception of one machine the Blakists captured, which is as yet unaccounted for.
   Liao units on St.Ives reported fighting several heavier-than-normal Syrtis Fusilier Centurions with increased speed, two ten-class autocannons and improved versions of the usual secondary armaments. Debris from destroyed chassis and stolen BattleROM footage leads Republic Intel to believe that they may have been heavily-modified salvage from the fighting on Cermak in 3059. How the Fusiliers got a hold of them, and from whom, is solely in the realm of speculation.
   Rumors abound that Corean intends to use the lessons learned from both the CN9 and CN10 series, and create an OmniMech version of the Centurion. These rumors have been recurring since before the Civil War; though they have proven false so far, our agents on New Avalon have indicated that there may be a bit more substance to the rumors this time.


Deployment:
   The Centurion II was first deployed on Port Arthur, where it saw extensive use by the First Davion Guards. Throughout Operation Bulldog, the design was used by AFFC forces, though it was occasionally salvaged by other Star League forces, or by the Jaguars themselves.
   By 3061, Corean had solved the problems inherent to the use of jump jets on the original-model Centurion. With the Jaguars defeated, and seeing no reason to keep producing a series of barely-profitable variants when upgraded CN9s would sell better, Corean discontinued the CN10. The Civil War and Jihad wiped out most of the remaining Centurion IIs, though some still exist, scattered across the Inner Sphere and spinward Periphery.
   The last known major deployment of the Centurion II was during the "rogue" Syrtis Fusilier attack on St.Ives five years ago, which some suspect may have been a false flag operation. Whether Duchess Hasek truly is responsible for the attack, or whether her dubious claims of a rogue unit gone berserk are true, tensions on the Davion-Liao border are higher than ever.

Overview:
   For a long time, little was definitively known about the origins of the Vanguard. The few surviving records from that era were damaged. Fortunately, the New Dallas Memory Core provided detailed information on the design's early years. The Vanguard was built by House Liao during the Age of War, as a contemporary of such early designs as the Mackie, Firebee, and Hector. The production line was shut down after the Reunification War. However, there was a more recent production run for a few years, beginning during the short-lived Tikonov Free Republic and continuing a few years after House Davion's capture of the factory planet.
   The Vanguard is still occasionally used today. It has a distinct reliance on ammunition, limiting its use in offensive operations, but it is otherwise a very versatile design.


Capabilities:
   The Vanguard's primary loadout was brought to regularity when a forgotten cache of mothballed Star League-era Vanguards were discovered on Shoreham by AFFS forces in 2894. The ER lasers were removed and subsequently lost before they could be taken to New Avalon for reverse-engineering; at the time, the destruction of the dropship was blamed on Liao sabotage, but recent information now points to a ROM operative.
   The Vanguard chassis, however, were still perfectly serviceable. Removing the now-unnecessary extra heat sinks and the token medium laser, techs added an autocannon in place of the missing main gun. The final configuration stuck when it received good reviews from a front line Capellan March lance leader. Its flexibility was so apparent that other MechWarriors changed their designs to match it.
   With its class 5 autocannon in the torso and the Holly LRM rack in the left arm, the Vanguard has an acceptable long range punch. The SRM-6, coupled with its combat grade fists, delivers a decent close range blow as well. While some might consider it slow for its purpose, the Pratt and Whitney 440 jump jets add greatly to its maneuverability.


Deployment:
    Estimates are that a maximum of 356 Vanguards existed within the Inner Sphere as of the Fourth Succession War, none of which were in good condition (outside of the handful fielded by ComStar, of course). The Succession Wars were not kind to the design, with many falling prey to ammunition explosions or heat-induced shutdown. The CCAF could not afford to retire the Vanguard or relegate it to militia units, due to their near-total lack of heavy Mechs. Thus the Vanguard was reserved for times when it was most useful.
   About 150 Vanguards still served in Liao units by the outbreak of the Jihad. The Xin Sheng movement resulted in the surviving Vanguards being refitted with more advanced technology, but no new ones have been built in the Confederation for over 300 years. Blakist forces also fielded about 30 of these 'Mechs. Out of the original chassis, it is estimated that about four dozen remain, mostly on the Capellan side of the border.
   It was not until the year 3028 that any "new" Vanguard chassis were constructed; however, these models lacked the sophisticated Pratt and Whitney jump jets that made the Star League-era Vanguard so maneuverable. Instead, Republican or FedSuns units often kitted their Vanguards out with a more commonly available set produced by Earthwerks or Kallon Industries. The factory complexes on Tikonov ceased production of the new Vanguard in 3032, after the Republic was absorbed by House Davion.
   Three small companies -- one Capellan, one based on Tikonov itself, and the third based on New Avalon -- existed solely to fashion spare parts for surviving Vanguards. The first was bought up by Ceres Metal Works, and the second was destroyed in a freak accident in 3034. However, Vanguard Light Industries of New Avalon managed to put together about 2 'Mechs a month from 3065 through the end of 3071. They sold these Mechs to the AFFS at cut-rate prices, as part of the ongoing effort to drive the Blakists off of House Davion's capital; many of them were destroyed during the brutal fighting. VLI has since rebuilt their damaged factory and switched production over to IndustrialMechs, which they can make more quickly and profitably.


Variants:
   A refit which saw some use during the Succession Wars, the VNG-3E replaced the LRM rack with another SRM-6, and removed the increasingly finicky jump jets altogether. This made room for a more sizable engine, the tried-and-true Vlar 300. Half a ton of armor was removed, mostly from the legs, to add the extra free tonnage required to mount a medium laser in the right torso.
   The Star League variant of the Vanguard, the VNG-3C, was functionally identical to the Succession-War 3D variant, except that the autocannon was replaced by two lasers -- an extended-range large and a standard medium -- and three single heat sinks. During the Succession Wars, Capellan Mechwarriors were forced to downgrade their main guns to a standard large laser, producing the 3L variant.
   The prototype VNG-1A, a relic of the Age of War, was designed only shortly after the Firebee. It is known to have mounted a primitive engine, cockpit, and armor. The main gun was a standard large laser, and the LRM rack was much smaller than in later variants. Jumpjet technology had not yet been perfected at the time, so it comes as no surprise that the primitive Vanguard lacked them. Only three original-run Vanguards are known to still exist in this form; two are museum pieces and the third was found in the New Dallas vault. The primitive Age of War design did see a brief resurgence on a few Davion worlds during the Jihad, but only a few dozen were built, and most were lost either to the Taurian suicide charge or to sheer attrition.
   VLI's rebuilt variant mounted a rotary autocannon with three tons of ammo. It also lacked jumpjets and had a smaller LRM rack (usually surplus from an old stockpile of Valkyrie weaponry). Rebuilding the ammo feed system so that all of the ammo was kept safe in CASE was problematic, but the survivability of the Mech greatly benefited.
   The Capellans upgraded their remaining Vanguards into the 4L variant back in the '60s, mounting stealth armor and double heat sinks. Its armament is unchanged from the Star League 3C variant, apart from having Capellan-manufactured weapons, and a downsized LRM rack. The techs at Ceres seem to have used the exact same redesigned ammo-feed system that VLI built the year before, which strongly implies that some level of industrial espionage was involved. For their part, Ceres representatives vehemently dismissed any such suggestion as rumor mongering, and insisted that "great minds think alike."
   About half of the remaining Capellan machines have been switched over to the newer 5L variant in the past decade, removing the lasers and two freezers in favor of a pair of light plasma rifles. This allows the VNG-5L far greater utility against the combined-arms forces of today's battlefield.
   Meanwhile, the 1D variant is an adaptation of the handful of remaining primitive VNG-1A's in Davion space, upgrading the cockpit to standard weight while switching out the laser for a light AC/5 and ammo, and switching out the missiles for MML-5 racks. A few March Militias, mostly on worlds near the Capellan border, have resorted to using this undergunned Semi-Primitive design to bolster their forces.


3145 Addendum:
   Out of sheer desperation, a Semi-Primitive Vanguard (the VNG-1D2) has been brought into production, mounting standard-grade armor and a Large Re-Engineered Laser alongside the MMLs, whose ammo is now protected by CASE.

Overview:

   Given the prevalence of the Charger and Hatamoto-Chi among DCMS forces, it was only a matter of time before an Omni version of one of these 'Mechs made its way from the drawing board to reality. A boxier, more imposing hybrid of the two designs, the Tachi probably would have become a common sight in House Kurita's 'Mech forces, had the devastation of the Jihad spared Luthien Armor Works.


Capabilities:

   The Tachi followed the "spare no expenses" line of thinking so prevalent among late-'60s military designers. An oversized XL engine provided the 80-ton assault mech with impressive speed for its size, matching the older Charger. This speed was further augmented by triple-strength myomer, at least on paper. However, the known weapon configurations would have had an exceedingly difficult time building up enough heat to activate the myomers without turning off heat sinks individually, requiring a large amount of micromanagement by the pilot.

   Further adding to the design's flaws was the questionable decision to make use of fragile composites for the OmniMech's skeleton. While it is true that the Tachi's speed would have allowed it to dodge more shots than other assault 'Mechs, anything that penetrated its thirteen-and-a-half tons of standard armor would quickly cripple the expensive machine.

   All of the Tachi's configurations put a C3 Slave unit in the head, wired directly to the targeting system and the 'Mech's main computer. The two functional Tachis we inherited from the Ghost Regiments both had a recurring problem where PPC hits to the head would cause the Slave unit to reboot, causing glitches with the targeting system and computer until the whole 'Mech was shut down and restarted again. However we're not sure whether this was a problem with the design itself, or simply those two examples -- none of the Kuritan pilots or techs who joined the Republic had worked with Tachis before.

   The Prime weapons loadout aped the configuration of the standard Hatamoto-Chi, pairing extended-range PPCs and standard SRM six-racks with a ton of ammo each. It also provided the mobility of the Charger by adding five standard jump jets. Alpha configuration was similar, but dropped the jump jets in favor of upgrading the missiles to MML-7 racks with two tons of ammo each. Both rather sensibly mounted CASE to prevent ammunition explosions.

   Configuration Bravo retained the ER PPCs, but completely changed the secondary weaponry. Four medium pulse lasers dotted the Tachi's frame, with one under each PPC and two on the centerline. Two machine-gun arrays were also added for use against infantry and battle armor, though their ammunition was limited to only half a ton (in CASE, of course). One extra heat sink was added to handle the additional buildup, but it would clearly have been insufficient if the pilot fired a full alpha strike.

   The Charlie variant was the least conventional, using an LBX-10 autocannon in the right arm as the main weapon. An MML-3 in each side torso allowed the Tachi Charlie a small amount of long-range weaponry, and the left arm mounted a trio of ER medium lasers and a battle fist. The addition of a full set of jump jets leads to the conclusion that this variant was meant for urban combat.

   Delta variant was an obvious stand-in for the AWS-9Q Awesome, with four standard PPCs. However, there was no room for any additional heat sinks or equipment, save for the standard C3 unit, making it an extremely hot-running variant. It's clear the LAW OmniMech division considered raw firepower to be superior to sustained combat ability, and given the frame's fragility they probably had a point.

   The final variant was not produced by the time the LAW facility on Guthry Island was destroyed. It would have mounted paired MML-5s and MML-9s, all enhanced with Artemis IV and fed by six tons of ammunition.


Deployment:

   Plans were made to put the Tachi into full production by the end of 3070, but the destruction of Luthien Armor Works' main facility capped the number of Tachis at forty-nine, not counting those destroyed at the factory. Only one shipment made it off of the Draconis capital, and of those, only two survived the brutal fighting that ensued in anything approaching operable condition. The Coordinator gifted the few remaining chassis and parts to the RAF, as much to get rid of them as anything else.

   The Tachi may not remain a historical curiosity, however. Republic Intelligence has learned that LAW has sold the OmniMech's blueprints to the Maltex Corporation. Whether anything will become of this is unknown at this time; it is hoped that the Coordinator retains his desire to avoid an open buildup of forces on our border.

Overview:
   In the immediate aftermath of the Clan Invasion, the Draconis Combine found itself missing almost a third of its most productive and populated systems, and with a severely denuded military. Seeing the Clans as the greater threat, the other Great Houses offered to sell the Combine a number of older chassis. The Federated Suns donated a number of JagerMechs, which contributed heavily to the decision to use it as a standardized chassis in Operation Bulldog.

   To say that the reaction of most DCMS officers was dismay was an understatement. Not only would they have to pilot machines tainted by association with the hated Davions, but the Jagermech in particular was never held in high regard by Kurita warriors. Independence Weaponry was contracted to produce a version more appropriate for Kuritan sensibilities.

   Increasing the chassis weight by five tons allowed for the mounting of much more armor and additional weaponry. Because the JagerMech had already been chosen as the standardized chassis for the counterattack, the up-tonned version was not given its own designation at the time -- it was, after all, still a "JagerMech" and not an offshoot design, so the Davions couldn't withdraw permission without risking breaking the agreement entirely. This led to significant grumbling from the Sandovals, who wanted to avoid the hated Dragon gaining useful heavy 'Mechs.

   Despite the legal backflips done by House diplomats in the 3050s, Republic Intel classifies the 70-ton Jagermech as its own design, and designates it the Jagermech II. For their part, the Davions used this designation internally as early as the debut of the Jagermech III.


Capabilities:

   In contrast to the original JM6 JagerMech, which is still widely seen as a glass cannon, the "Deuce" was intended to fulfill a variety of heavy 'Mech roles. As such, the chassis had to be strengthened to carry much heavier armor -- eleven tons of ferro-fibrous armor on the JM7-D. This had the side effect of making it more resistant to shocks, such as the stress of landing from a jump. Since the skeleton is made of standard materials and is compatible with many common JM6 spare parts, logistics for the JM7 are quite easy compared to many other 'Mech designs.

   The arms were also modified with OmniMech-inspired weapon mounts. Though the Jagermech II is nowhere near a full OmniMech in functionality, the arm weaponry is at least as easy to modify and maintain as the rugged, roomy Orion. This has led to a plethora of variants popping up, including half a dozen factory variants.

   The JM7-D's weaponry consists of the same paired Ultra AC/5s and medium pulse lasers seen on the JM6-DD, but the light autocannons are traded out for a pair of extended-range large lasers and extra double heat sinks. This allows for a major increase in firepower for the relatively minor tradeoff of heat inefficiency. There is also room for CASE in both side torsos, protecting both ammunition bins. Unfortunately, the considerable weight of the weaponry meant that a bulky, expensive XL engine had to be fit into the torso.


Deployment:

   The Jagermech II found its way into nearly every House unit that fought in the counterattack against the Smoke Jaguars, as well as into Jaguar and Nova Cat forces via combat salvage and isorla. All but the DCMS and AFFC sold theirs off on the black market once parts for the machines became harder to come by, resulting in an impressive number of Jagermech IIs showing up among mercenaries in the years leading up to the Jihad. The Word of Blake also quietly took the opportunity to get a hold of a significant number of them to bolster their forces.

   Though Kallon Industries' main plant on Talon-Wernke was destroyed in 3069, the Independence factory on Quentin still produces the Jagermech II. The Davions apparently still have a soft spot for the design, as despite the factory's location within our borders, they have purchased the majority of every JM7 factory run since the end of the Jihad.


Variants:

   The JM7-W reduced the armor back to eight tons, and changed out the dual pulse lasers for a larger one on the centerline. This was primarily seen used either by Davion troops who were used to the "glass cannon" mentality of the lighter Jagermech, or by Clan bondsmen who saw themselves as dezgra and preferred all-or-nothing combat. Most of these were either destroyed in the Civil War or have been modified to a different variant by now.

   The JM7-J, introduced alongside the W and D variants, downgraded the pulse lasers to standard mediums and reduced the armor to nine tons, in order to mount jump jets. While it did fulfill the official requirements of the chassis to take part in Bulldog, it was very unpopular after a poor showing on Port Arthur, and both Kallon and Independence discontinued it by 3060.

   The JM7-K came into being just in time to serve in the Combine-Ghost Bear War of the early 3060s, and mounted a C3 unit and a wildly different weapons configuration based around twin PPCs and twin MRM launchers. The K2 switches the MRMs out for LRM-10s and upgrades the C3 unit to a Master computer. Both had trouble faring well against the Ghost Bear units, which tended to outrange them.

   Debuting during the bloody FedCom Civil War, the JM7-F was a staple of both sides' heavy forces. It reduced the number of heat sinks, and removed all the arm weaponry to fit twin Rotary AC/5s, fed by four tons of ammo and guided by a Targeting Computer. A Guardian ECM suite was meant to help this Jagermech II variant get close enough to obliterate its target in a hail of metal. These were often used by Victor's forces during the push on New Avalon.

   Two variants appeared during the Jihad. The JM7-G mounted paired Rotary and LBX AC/2s, along with ER medium lasers, while the 7C3BS was an experimental variant based around a C3 Boosted Slave (hence the designation) which eventually became mainstream. It mounts twin Snub-Nose PPCs, a quartet of Light AC/2s fed by two tons of ammo, and a single centerline ER medium laser.

   The latest variant is meant for our forces, and constitutes the majority of JM7s being manufactured in recent years -- though the JM7-D and JM7-K still outnumber it in total numbers. Twin Heavy PPCs provide impressive firepower, and are backed up by standard medium lasers and Light AC/2s, while additional heat sinks help deal with the horrendous heat buildup of the main guns.

Overview:
   Many militaries, Clan and Inner Sphere alike, found that OmniMechs were terrific weapons with great strategic flexibility -- but only when logistics were stable and the factories avoided damage. The Jihad inflicted such damage on the Great Houses that most of them were unable or unwilling to continue supporting large OmniMech forces, with all the expenses that entailed.

   Nowhere was this trend more noticeable than in the Draconis Combine. The destruction of Luthien Armor Works' main plant was devastating to the DCMS, and effectively orphaned most of their OmniMech designs in one fell swoop. Iconic 'Mechs like the Avatar, Sunder, and Owens lost their primary part supplier overnight.

   When LAW reestablished themselves on Nykvarn, they were forced to limit themselves to only a couple chassis. Along with the Dragon, they later chose to resurrect the Strider -- partly to correct some errors in the original design, and partly for the prestige of being able to say they made OmniMechs again.


Capabilities:
   The Strider II uses a slightly modified version of the original Strider's endo-steel chassis. A light fusion engine -- crucially, with double heat sinks this time -- saves some weight, without introducing the high cost or vulnerability of an XL. A small cockpit shaves off another ton, while a compact gyro is used to free up room for a large gun mount on the "chin". Armor coverage is the same as the original Strider, making the "chin gun" one of the few apparent outward changes on the new OmniMech.

   Nearly all of the variants make use of the new weaponry that has proliferated since the end of the Jihad. The Strider II is often used as a weapon testbed, much the same way the Centurion has been used by FedSuns forces for decades.

   The prime variant mounts three MML-3s in each stubby arm, fed by four tons of ammo. The "chin gun" mounts a quartet of Liao-developed ER Micro Lasers, which are being produced under license in Kurita territory. No CASE is present, which has led to this variant falling out of favor for everything but minelaying duty as time goes on.

   Alpha variant mounts an oversized Heavy PPC in the centerline mount, backed up by an ER Micro and a Streak SRM-2 in each arm. Bravo mounts a new model of Light AC/5 in each arm -- perhaps meant for a new design -- with two ER medium lasers and a Micro Pulse in the chin gun.

   Charlie variant mounts the new extended-range Support PPCs, three to an arm, giving this variant some long-range harassment capability. The center mount contains a trio of improved medium pulse lasers, which scatter their damage across the enemy target. The lack of "big punch" makes Charlie variant more of a supporting loadout.

   Delta uses a centerline MRM-20 with Apollo FCS, backed up by support ER PPCs and ER micro lasers. A boosted C3 slave is used to improve the MRMs' targeting, without being susceptible to ECM interference. Epsilon deals more focused damage, based around a Snub-Nose PPC and backed up with paired light plasma rifles. Micro pulse lasers provide a modicum of defense against battle armor and infantry.

   Foxtrot is a long-range bombardment design, mounting a centerline Extended LRM rack and two tons of ammo. A pair of X-Pulse lasers help defend the Strider II at ranges where the LRMs would be ineffective. Golf is far more conventional, mounting pairs of standard PPCs and extended-range small lasers. The last variant we have catalogued fits a Boosted C3 Master computer in one arm pod, two Light PPCs in the other, and a trio of standard medium lasers in the chin gun.


Deployment:
   Operational testing with the Ryuken-san and the 5th Sword of Light Regiment led to the rapid adoption of the Strider II by the rest of the DCMS. The Coordinator also seems to be spreading the new OmniMech to a few second-line and garrison units whose samurai have distinguished themselves. The 'Mech has not yet been seen outside Kurita forces, with the exception of occasional Ghost Bear isorla in the recent war.

   Though Luthien Armor Works has been rebuilding its primary facility (with considerable financial assistance from the Combine government), OmniMechs are being de-emphasized compared to their pre-Jihad status. Furthermore, blocky 'Mechs like the Strider II are far less popular with the soldiery than 'Mechs that typify the "samurai aesthetic", such as the Hatamoto or No-Dachi. The Strider II may wind up becoming a casualty of these factors in the next decade or so, as LAW switches production over to more "culturally appropriate" designs.

   The original Strider is still seen across the Inner Sphere, but not in terribly large numbers. The Combine has been selling off these older OmniMechs to the Republic, the Capellans, and mercenaries, as well as some League successor states.


3145 Addendum:
   Despite all expectations, the Strider II was not discontinued, and continues to be produced on Nykvarn alongside Ostroc variants, the newer Dragon II and the classic Grand Dragon. However its lack of specialized armor has limited its deployment in the Davion front; it is expected that these OmniMechs will primarily see use against the Republic, or perhaps against the Dragon's Clan neighbors.

I don't know jack from BS about the custom guns, but the Golf is the variant I would use- albeit after removing the ER Smalls for a center line DHS or C3/TAG or whatever.
