The Second Succession War is coming! Mercenary units will play a central role in this brutal conflict, and we want to feature yours on the war-torn battlefields of the Inner Sphere. Submit your best mercenary unit name to ray@catalystgamelabs.com by March 17. We'll consider it for a mention in the pages of our upcoming sourcebook.
-
Interesting. Couple of quick questions:
Strictly unit name only or do you want ideas on the commander's name, unit insignia or other details?
One submission per person limit?
-
Just a name.
Ah, no limit, but limit yourself to cool name you've come up with, don't hit me with every possible combinations of <possessive name/adjective><things> :)
-
Tiffany's Brood.
Might as well take the 'Make my wife famous' route to infamy...
-
fun idea!
-
While in our current Norcal CBT campaign I'm running Disposable Income, the second succession war needs a unit named:
Mopar's Messiahs.

Wanted to second Mopar's Messiahs and submit The Broken Blades as my entry.
-
E-mail sent and another may follow as I give this more thought.
-
Neat. Will submit one.
-
How about....Neon Knights :P
Sure, it's my nic, but we have sooooo many Neon Knights:

http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Neon_Knight_(Toei)
as well as of course the play on regular word:
Neon Nights :D
-
I've got a few more names floating around if CGL ever decides to do this again for other eras.
Though I do have a camo scheme for the unit I submitted since they tend to be my go to unit for MekHQ campaigns that I think looks fantastic in MegaMek.

Question: I presume that Merc outfits with cross-IP inspired names need not apply? (Team Banzai, Fighting Urukhai, etc) Or is this considered kosher given such units' preponderance in early/ 3rd SW sources and its potential inclusion will presumably be limited to how they were destroyed in the 2nd SW?
-
Your presumption is correct. :-[
-
I'm picturing mercenaries in the 2nd war being much more "corporate" than their rock star descendants in the 3rd.
They're dealing with capable, professional governments still commanding massive firepower: to impress these clients they've got pamphlets and PR people, crew cuts and PowerPoint presentations.
They've got names like:
Bleeding Edge Solutions
Body Count Services Group
Dynamic Intervention
Fugazi Force
Iron Partners

I'll third Mopar's Messiahs. In our campaign I'm running Fortune's Favorites.

Awesome! Got my submission sent in.

LOL
Thanks guys.
Would love it but I need to point out that Mopar is a trademark of FCA.
I'll send a list to Ray
-
Submissions sent!
-
Just sent my submission.
-
I sent one in too. Thanks to TPTB for giving us a chance to leave a mark on the universe we love :)

Given that it's the Second Succession War, it's probably more like the TPTB giving the universe a chance to leave a mark on a unit you love.
-
;D O0 Good one cubby!
-
Ouch!
-
Let us hope he isn't referring to "skid marks" on our beloved units :P
-
The Knights of nowhere
Steel contracters
-
Hogan's Guards AKA the HoGs
-
Love is in the air.... ( Ever-Free ).
:-*
TT
-
Cross' Cavaliers - just a shameless self promotion.

Oh I already have painholders, I mean placeholders, for these units in the master listing. Lord Gideon has spent the last two weeks trying to stop me killing every unit in the Inner Sphere. He is such a spoil sport.
-
Noooooooooooo! Don't kill Gideon's Griffins too harshly!! #P
-
I threw "Vic's Vaporizers" into the hat; they'd just be "Vic's Vapor" after they get nuked :D
-
I sent Adrian:
Snake Eyes
Unit Logo: two d6 with '1's showing.
-
I went with an old favorite that I normally use with Manei Domini forces: Vigor Mortis.
-
I sent mine:
Rutger's Raubritters
Part of a Lyran unit that went rogue during the chaos and sets out for service to a higher calling: their wallets!
-
I sent in two, the first mostly for the pun value, and the second based on some 3025 characters I've written about here and there:
1) Stack's Deck: all the playing card allusions you can think of, to include "52 pick-up" when the unit gets crushed.
2) Vercelli's Vigilantes: based on a couple of shady characters (father and son) from the era of Anton's Revolt and after. As I said to Ray: "A Second Succession War ancestor with a similarly shady reputation would be icing on the cake."
-
Since everyone is sharing, I tossed two names into the pot.
1) Bad News Firewalkers - a unit from the Bad News system that has no problem with high temperatures (until that nuke hits that is!)
2) Red Rover's Ronin - old high school basketball nickname plus some masterless samurai. May they die gloriously!
-
The Pale Horsemen has always been my unit. Think about Revelation 6:8 and you'll know what they're about.
-
Vigor Mortis is good, I like that one.
Tex 'Mechs?
The Grim Brothers
The Walking Dread
Too punny?
-
I guess I'll get in on the spirit of posting what I submitted.
Above all others was Green Thunder.
Honorable mentions were Damage Force Plus and Heaven's Wrath.
For all the unit's I've helped create as part of my gaming group or came up with on my own I do feel it a bit weird that those are the only three I'm willing to be flexible enough on their past to offer up to the Second Succession War.
-
Aura Wings (a PC Unit)
-
I sent in a total of nine names with The Disposable Heroes (Metallica reference) and The Forlorn Hope as the two more original names out of the bunch.
-
submitted numerous merc units
-
My suggestions
- Feral Auditors
- Warcheese
- Plausible Deniability
- Myomer Mayhem
Was fun thinking them up :)
-
Why not Bug Hunters :P
-
I submitted Harlan's Hessians as my Merc unit.
-
suggestions & reasons why:
You may recall James Degenhardt aka RPGsheets aka Amalor Myrnnyx, a well-known painter extraordinaire, who passed away 3 years ago. (March 2014) He had created several homebrew mercenary units, but only one fits.
AUTUMN'S HARVESTERS I can't recall much beyond it being a mixed force of battalion-ish size.
A second offering would be in honor of Chris Dickerson AKA DREAD, who passed away in November 2015.
DREAD'S NAUGHTS. I think he said it was about regiment in size.
final suggestion: RONIN'S REGULATORS. A cavalry battalion with a mix of fast mediums and hovertanks.
-
I'll repost mine again...
Ever-Free.
They are a canon unit, never given stats from House Davion, pg. 69.
Look 'em up.
TT
-
What a great idea.
Sent 3 in, my merc unit from an ongoing campaign. One named after the Mrs and the last named after where I live.
-
Alas if only someone was asking for Pirate unit names for a bygone era...
Rabid Dawgs run by the Dawg brothers :P
-
I am fashionably late to the party but seeing that everybody is sharing:
Roberts' Privateers
CO Westley Roberts
XO Amanda Montoya
-
IF our suggestion is included in this upcoming book... do we need to submit a little backstory to aid the authors?
-
Drac's 7th Cavalry from the Free World League. A corporation protection specialist unit which breaks down at company level with one
mech lance, one tank lance and one infantry lance. The 7th was a regiment in size but all contracts where for company size or smaller.
HQ home world is Ayn Tarma. Given the 7th a wide range of planets without being on the front lines.
-
Bellemore Warfare Solutions
Willful Malice
The Indefatigable
Friendliest Fire
-
I threw "Vic's Vaporizers" into the hat; they'd just be "Vic's Vapor" after they get nuked :D
Or Vic's Vaporized ;D
-

Not required, those chosen will go on the Deployment Tables.
-
Not required, those chosen will go on the Deployment Tables.
And die in various ways.
-
...
Roberts' Privateers
....
The Chairman would approve.
-
Cheers and thanks O0
I just hope that TPTB agree with The Chairman :)
-
For the Canadians: Barrett's Privateers.
Having them all die horribly would be quite in keeping with tradition.
-
And their dropship needs to be named "Antelope"...
-
Get this man a "like" button.

I'm slowly going through all the entries right now. Over 500 entries, and we need to choose about 20. Some pretty hard choices...
-
Good luck!

Bird of Prey.
Maybe an aerospace merc unit?
-
How about "Cromwell's Cavaliers" ? anyone know what it's referencing will get the joke. :D

*martialic music begins and the screen starts showing a military looking, quite big encampment from far away*
Problems with unwanted guests? Bulling neighbors? Disloyal competitors?
Get the GHOSTRIDERS !
*the screen zooms down to ground level to one part of the encampment where a mobile HQ is guarded by a Cyclops BattleMech and a Rommel tank. In the background even more units are visible*
Ghostrider Command ! The wisest military heads available near and far will find ways to get things done as you need them to be.
*the screen moves fast to the side to a grey-red unit consisting mostly of heavy to assault BattleMechs. The unit is moving forward slowly and the leading Guillotine points at a target outside of the screen*
The First Ghostrider Regiment ! Titans of the battlefield. Their superior battlefield domination is the backbone of our never-ending efforts to satisfy your needs – to a point even beyond your scope.
*again the screen moves fast to the side. It stops at a unit with mostly medium and light BattleMechs. A Hussar just rushes around the flank with very high speed*
The Second Ghostrider Regiment ! Lightning-fast strike abilities and astonishing flexibility will secure the comprehensive fulfillment of your desires.
*and again fast moving screen and a blur view. Then parked BattleMechs are visible. Between their legs a group of young men and women is trained by a brought-shouldered barking elder soldier*
The Third Ghostrider Regiment ! Highly experienced trainers teach the most motivated young men and women you will find anywhere the ways of solving your problems.
*the view moves back to the First Regiment, that just started the rush against their intended target. An impressive amount of tonnage shakes the ground, as the Guillotine starts it’s Jump Jets and jumps out of the screen*
Long-lasting material hiring, personal rights enforcement, unwanted resource disposal – you name it, we do it !
*Suddenly the screen is filled with the grey-red Guillotine which lands with hissing Jump Jets while firing its Large Laser at a target outside of the screen. Obviously satisfied with its hit it comes to an halt – almost relaxing. The unit’s insignia fills the screen*
GHOSTRIDERS – Solutions for a too small planet.
*Screen goes black…*
-
Neat! How much’d that promo on Galitea set you back?
-
Contracts ! More than they can handle !! :D
I'm playing the First Regiment for about two decades by now, and wanted to do something like this for YEARS.
Thx for the opportunity ;)
Although i'm probably a bit late.
-
The White Company. It's historical and semi-poetic (referencing the book by Sir Doyle).
-
Heck I have a whole thread full of these.
-
I know I'm late but
Aces over Queens
Mixed Aero (18) and Battlemech (14) unit with the BM unit lead by Amy Queen.
-
Blackwind Lancers!!
-
Bitter Pill
A hard luck outfit that somehow keeps coming back for more
-
Bitter Pill
A hard luck outfit that somehow keeps coming back for more
Yeah ... that's hard to swallow ::)
-
Can I nominate Nox Aeternum?
-
The Awesome Hard.
Began as a lance with two lights and two Awesome. Now company sized (Light lance, Medium lance, Assault lance), but can't seem to keep any heavy or assaults intact unless they're Awesome of some sort.
The maintenance bill for their heat sink coolant is frightening.
00000
The Salvage Snipers
Not a combat Mercenary company, but more a battlefield salvage crew for hire that has their own security & dropship.

Morgan's Gallowglases

Mods, can we have this thread closed, as I believe the request has already been fufilled?

two years ago now yeah
