I was thinking this morning because of Hanse and Takashi especially in a 3025 setting that a Battlemaster may indeed serve as a King often.

Although just thinking about it generically I suppose Atlas would be the King while the Banshee would be a Queen. A Stalker says Rook to me and how about a Crusader as a Bishop with a Phoenix Hawk as a Knight and Stinger/Wasps as Pawns.

I am completely behind the Inner Sphere pairings here, I am surprised no one mentions the Balius for a knight  :D

Great list. I would put the valkyrie as the Davion pawn, though

So after much thought and deliberation (and a few drinks), I've decided on the set.  First off, thanks to everyone who commented.  There are a lot of great ideas here. 8)  I really want to do a faction set, but this is for my brother, not me.  He is not a Battletech man like me (he went 40K), but he still likes the game and will play with me on occasion.  And what he remembers most are the 3025 crew, so that's what I'm going with here.

"Black"
King: Atlas
Queen: Banshee
Bishops: Warhammer
Knights: Wolverine
Rooks: Catapult
Pawns: Locust

"White"
King: Battlemaster
Queen: Stalker
Bishops: Marauder
Knights: Shadow Hawk
Rooks: Grasshopper (his personal favorite mech from back in the day)
Pawns: Wasp

I'll have to do a faction set for myself one day.  That one will likely be Davion vs. Kurita.  >:D

Now if only IWM would release all the new Classics I need for this... ::)

Tempting, but I want everything in metal for this.  I will have to make do with what is available. :)

How about InnerSphere vs. the Clans?

King: Diashi (Dire Wolf)
Queen: Gladiator (Executioner)
Rook: Man O' War (Gargoyle)
Bishop: Mad Cat (Timber Wolf)
Knight: Thor (Summoner)
Pawn: Koshi (Mist Lynx)

You may want to rethink the metals idea, since you can get plastics that look about the same from the Lance packs- or what is left of them available.  Also in favor of making the pawns light tanks, definitely offers that difference.  But if you go metal . . .

White
King-  MWDA HQ vehicle or Morningstar 20-308
Queen-  Atlas
Bishop-  Grand Crusader  AR20-388
Knight-  Black Knight either BT-355 or 20-5098
Rook-  Catapult C4 20-930
Pawn- Scorpion 20-305, or IS Std BA

King-  Mobile HQ 20-743
Queen-  King Crab
Bishop-  Toyama  AR20-694
Knight-  Black Knight 20-774
Rook-  Archer BT-411 or if it must jump a Crusader
Pawn-  Vedette 20-459, or IS Std BA

For the IS Std BA you may want to use MWDA BA since each trooper is larger and you can cut them from the little crescent of 3.

Idly, considering the Queen has such long movement in all directions and can take a piece from clear across the board, why not a Longbow?  Or for the Clans, Bane 4...

I see a lot of assaults and not many mediums in a few of these lists. Also, I'm trying to avoid the unseen to make acquisition easier. so I propose:

King:     Atlas
Queen:  Stalker
Bishop:  Centurion
Knight:  Dervish
Rook:    Catapult
Pawn:    Commando

Obvious OPFOR for this one would be the Clans, which others have covered off on quite nicely already (I'd use a Kitfox as a pawn rather than an elemental personally, just for aesthetics)

I also thought Wolf's Dragoons might be an interesting project, although one or two pieces might be a little harder to get:

King:     Archer (alt: Annihilator)
Queen:  Warhammer (Alt: Cyclops)
Bishop:  Wolfhound
Knight:  Hoplite
Rook:    Marauder II (Alt: Imp)
Pawn:    Flea

The obvious OPFOR for this might be a Succession Wars Kurita force. something like:

King:     Hatamoto Chi
Queen:  Mauler/Daboku
Bishop:  Jenner
Knight:  Dragon
Rook:    Charger 1A5
Pawn:    Panther

Given the nice sculpts of the MW4 lineup currently available, I thought they might make a nice set too:

King:     Madcat Mk II
Queen:  Vulture Mk[the MW4 looking one]
Bishop:  Cougar
Knight:  Hellspawn
Rook:    Thanatos
Pawn:    Osiris

While I was digging for miniatures to make this list, some Clan Invasion and later Liao stuff caught my eye:

King:     Yu Huang
Queen:  Jinggau
Bishop:  Men Shen
Knight:  Lao Hu
Rook:    Catapult (definitely the C4 resculpt)
Pawn:    Raven

Personally I think this last one might be one of the most aesthetically interesting. Note also that keeping things visually consistent yet sufficiently different was a greater consideration for me than game mechanics, although I tried to give a nod in that direction anyway. Feedback welcome as always.

No, sorry it's put away in deep cold storage...

Was from a campaign I did way back when...

42nd Avalon Hussars vs. Ryuken-ni

Though technically, the Victor-9D is the same mech as the 9K... I went with the Devastator for the Davion flavor. Cudgels for that munchyness and standard 1A1s for overall badassery... since the BA are equal in strengths I thought IS Standards at first... then naw, flavortown! Rest went as is...

So its officially 1 year later & past X-Mas.

Did the Chess Set get Built & what did you use?

And I know its threadcromancy, but he did say next X-mas,  how can we not check in to see how it turned out?

Well, first, thank you for even remembering this.  I still have my list written down, but due to life and one certain Kickstarter, my plan did not come to fruition. :(

However, it will not be forgotten.  I still think it's an awesome project and present. ;)  And he still needs a chess set...

i think that Pawns should be non-mech units. since in BT vehicles fill the role of cheap massed combatant.
for the IS i'd use something like a Vedette or other light tank.

for the clans, use the Roc protomech maybe. (or elementals if you aren't a proto fan.)

Pawns should be named units, because someone considered them disposable at one point.  ;D
See:
Grayson Carlyle
Galen Cox
Jaime Wolf
Chistophori Archer
Aiden Pryde
Andery Kerensky
Sarah Mcevedy
Etc....   ;D

How big are the chessboard squares? Some of the mechs suggested are very big and should NOT be selected if the squares are small sized...

Just a thought.

Was that "one certain Kickstarter" the Clan Invasion?

If so, depending on the 'Mechs you choose, you could do Old Image vs. New Image...

That way, your player doesn't have to remember 'Mech A = 'Mech B = Piece (Like where Hellraiser said to use Locusts as pawns for one side, and Spiders on the other)... But instead, Locusts are pawns for both sides, BUT even beyond the coloring they a differentiated.
