Miniature of the Fortnight #6: Vulture/Mad Dog
« on: 05 December 2016, 21:22:26 »
Bring out your Mad Dogs!  Bring out your Vultures!

This is another of the classic Clan 'Mechs.  I have a certain fondness for it, thanks to its (admittedly, not great) CG splendor in the cartoon series.

And we shouldn't forget the 'Mechs that came after, the Vulture Mk III and Vulture Mk IV.

According to ColBosch's spreadsheet (for which I am grateful), there have several sculpts of the Vulture:
  • The original sculpt (20-600), available in metal (I assume lead and ralidium) and resin
  • The resculpt (20-600RE)
  • An Armorcast resin sculpt
  • A museum scale sculpt (DL-682)
The descendant 'Mechs each have one sculpt:
  • Vulture Mk III (BT-303)
  • Vulture Mk IV (20-5080)
I'm sure there have been MW:DA figures as well.

So if you have any painted (or will be painting this fortnight), please post them!

I'm not a big fan of the Clans. Never have been. Never will be. What I am a fan of is bashing minis, and when Dembigtanks started a thread about wishing they would make a Mad Dog Mk.II, I found myself getting into the conversation. Always one to enjoying moving concept to reality, I decided to build one. The end result was this;

As I've said, I was never a big fan of the Clans, which is why it got painted in Clan Diamond Shark - Omega Galaxy scheme, and found it's way to Diamond Shark as a surprise gift.

Clan Ghostbear is known to be one, if not the most important user of Vultures. As a result both Vulture minis in my possession ended within Clan Ghostbears Alpha galaxy.
As it should be obvious it is an old sculpt and a RE model.
Both models feature magnetised torsos, not for transport reasons but for safety (of the arms). If a mini tips over on the table the magnets should split before the arms (especially those of the old sculpt) can do. Of course this feature leaves them with twistable torsos as well.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't there a MechForce (1/500) scale version?

I don't have that one, but I do have one meagre offering right now: A Map Scale kit-bash.

I do have the original sculpt and an RE done up as an alt config. I'll get to those when I have a chance.

But, for now, enjoy the micro.

Here's my CJF Zeta Galaxy one from the Alpha Strike rule book.  Sadly, I had originally put the lower torso piece on backwards, and failed to fix it in time to make the publication.  But it's fixed now. :/

I start from the Vulture-A, and launchers, beefed for triple missile strips, cutted from IWM's scrap boxes.

Next one my old Vulture-C, made for trinary of agessive jaguars a few years ago. Side torsoso been filed off, to show a fluff note, which said, that C conf "does not even look as a Vulture"

And the last one is Vulture-F, with Onager HAGs

Here are my contributions.  Unfortunately younger me decided to be fancy and try to drill missiles into the original sculpt.

The custom ones I'm not so sure on, but I am guessing i was going for the A, an Ultra AC config, amd the B just from the arms alone.

Woooooow, holy smokes.  Now that's a conversion!  Out of curosity (because I like your idea of Fun), where did you make the cuts in the torso?

I'm guessing vertical cuts just behind the side triangles, to bring the nose size down. That's one of the things I did when accurising my MW4-style Vulture in DA scale.

I really need to get around to painting my armorcast mechs.   :-[

I don't remember that photo being so blurry when I took it.  ???  I may need to look through all my old photos to see if I can improve them.

For the weapons pods? Carved from balsa wood, layered with warehouse sticky label parts to cover the grain, then greeblied with random DA bitz.

You can see the wood grain on the front edges of the upper bulking-out bit ;)

Other than that, about 3/8 inch cut out of the nose, the side torsos cut down and new missile doors added. I really enjoyed this one.

Nice job.

Its weird seeing a Mad Dog with out the normal missile launcher shoulders.

Here's my Ghost Bear Mad Dog-G, in the Alpha Galaxy scheme. I had fun making this configuration. 3x ER MED pulse lasers, 2x streak SRM-6s, streak LRM-15, and an ER PPC. It has this eerie asymmetrical profile to it, which is what drew me to it. Its like an upgrade to the B variant.

I'm sorry I'm a little late.  I didn't finish painting this until last night.

This is supposed to be in the colors of Clan Diamond Shark's Gamma Galaxy.  It's a proof of concept so I haven't added decals or even sealed it.  This was my first real metal mini from scratch so it was a learning experience.  I currently plan to strip it and redo certain things at some point (there are a few mold lines that should have been filed better and the post from the torso going into the waist/hip assembly should have been filed down) but it was an interesting experience.  (And then there was the inadvertent green tea wash.  Oops.)
