An American Tanker in Prince Davion's Court
« on: 12 March 2022, 19:21:38 »
The following scenario is based on the excellent Battletech fanfic "This was easier on the tabletop", found here:
https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=62173.0

New Avalon Institute of Science
College of Biology & Medicine
February 7th, 3028

A doctor, two nurses and a number of government officials are crowded around a hospital bed in the treatment wing of the NAIS College of Biology & Medicine, observing that patient lying there. One of the nurses observes the patient's vitals as displayed on the monitor next to the bed and says "Dr. Stewart, the patient is beginning to wake up."

Immediately, the other people in the room turn and focus their attention on the man lying in bed.

Darkness

Light

Consciousness….

"Where…Who…what happened? How did I get here?"

"General Hodges, my name is Dr. Charles Stewart and I am your attending physician. As to what happened and how you got here, you were found lying unconscious on the floor of your house. Medical aid was summoned and you were brought here."

"Doc, it's obvious to me that you're holding something back. Where the hell am I?"

One of the other people looks to Dr. Stewart and says "Tell him. He deserves to know."

"Yes, sir."

A pause, then "General Hodges, I don't know quite how to tell you this, so I'm just going to tell you. You are in the Hospital attached to the New Avalon Institute of Science…"

Hodges cuts off Dr. Stewart with a sharp gesture and barks angrily "New Avalon Institute of Science? You have got to be kidding me…"

The civilian who first spoke to Dr. Stewart fixes his gaze on the patient and says "General Hodges, my name is Quintus Allard and we have a great deal to talk about…"

The shock of hearing that name causes Hodges' eyes to roll back in his head

Blackness....

Quintus Allard remarks to one of his aides "well, that didn't go as well as I had hoped. Dr. Stewart, please let me know when our guest regains consciousness."

"Yes, Director."

Just then, of of Quintus' aides comes into the room with an excited look of concern on his face.

"Sir, you need to look at this..."

The aide hands over a rectangular cardboard box with an illustrated lid. Emblazoned on the cover are the words 'Battletech: A Game of Armored Combat'.

"Send a message to the office of the First Prince; flag it as being of 'CRITIC' importance. Tell his highness that his presence is urgently requested here. Details upon arrival."

"Yes, sir."

Interesting.

An actual U.S. Army Armor officer would take a good look at Hanse's RCT concept and most likely call it a decent beginning. And would drive a tank through the LCAF's 'Social General' club before calling in an airstrike on their operational planning.

Noted and logged.

Greetings, all:

I am pleased at the positive reception I have received.

Hereafter follows the next update.

Four Hours Later

Dr. Stewart checks the vitals coming across the screen above the patient's bed and says "your highness, Director Allard, General Hodges is waking up." A minute or two later, and "welcome back; you had us quite concerned." Hodges replies "Doc if you just got the shock I received, you'd be in the same shape I was."

Hanse Davion nods to Quintus Allard and says "tell him."

"Yes, Highness. General Hodges, what's the last thing that you remember?"

"Well, I had just returned home after a conference in Britain. As soon as I entered my living room, I only had time to drop my travel bag when there was a brilliant flash of light. The next thing I knew, I woke up here. Suppose you tell me what happened."

"Of course; it's the least we could do for you, after what happened. The long and short of it is that NAIS was conducting an experiment in long-range, high-energy communications. The apparatus opened a hole in the fabric of sub-space and the comm. pulse was beamed through; that should have been the end of it, but it wasn't. Through circumstances that are so impossible that a new branch of mathematics would have to be invented to describe it, the energy pulse we sent through the hole in sub-space coalesced around your house and caused it to be carried here. Outside the event horizon, the events would have been explosive to say the least…"

"So, you're saying that I have effectively been transported through space and time. Also, that my house disappeared in an explosion. Where's Gene Roddenberry or Russell Davies when you need them…"

"Your highness?"

"General Hodges, I am Hanse Davion, First Prince of the Federated Suns." The prince holds up the Battletech game box and asks "would you mind telling us where you got this?"

"I thought I recognized you just now. Battletech is (or was) a tabletop game created in 1984 by Jordan Weisman and L. Ross Babcock III. When I was at West Point, I played the game as a means of recreation in my few off hours and, as my military career progressed, I found the game a useful adjunct when I engaged in various sand-table exercises."

"Director Allard tells me that he has had staff members going through your personal library. You have a very large selection of Battletech-related material. In the few hours they have had to examine it, it appears that this so-called game of yours exactly matches what happened in the Inner Sphere from before the time of the Terran Hegemony and after the fall of the Star League. Your books and other materials also relate what's going to happen in the future.."

"Such as your impending marriage to Melissa Steiner and your planned campaign against the Capellan Confederation. In all fairness, you do have justice on your side, as Maximilian Liao tried to replace you with a body double in 3025; in the end, it was Ardan Sortek who discovered the plot and rained on Liao's parade…." Just then, a shudder runs through General Hodges' body as he suddenly realizes 'my wife, my children; I'm never going to see them again.' Momentarily, his shoulders slump, then he pulls himself up straight again.

"Your highness, I am Lieutenant-General James Hodges, United States Army. My last duty post before I ended up here was as the Commanding General of III Corps at Fort Hood, Texas. If you want documentation of this and the rest of my military career, there's a copy of my Military Personnel Records Jacket locked in my desk in the living room of my house…"

"Quintus, look into this immediately."

"Yes, highness."

"General Hodges, my staff will make you as comfortable as possible. You'll be pleased to know that water and natural gas feeds have been reattached to your house. If you wish, you can return there as soon as Dr. Stewart signs off on your release. I haven't been to see your house just yet, so perhaps you'd do me the honor of allowing a visit "

"Thank you, sir, I'd really appreciate that; I'd certainly like to show you around."

"Excellent. Before I leave, it is plain to me that you have minutely-detailed knowledge of what's happening in the Inner Sphere; you also know of my planned campaign against the Capellans. Is there anything you can tell me now that would be of benefit to my Plan of Operations?"

General Hodges scratches his chin reflexively and replies "your highness, there's a Star League Defense Force depot on the planet of Helm in the Free Worlds League. Aside from the large amount of materiel located there, the facility also includes a Star League Field Library; I don't think you want the Free Worlders or those ****** toaster-worshipping bastards in Comstar to get it. There's also a similar facility on the former Terran Hegemony planet of New Dallas (also in Free Worlds League space). The Helm installation isn't due to be discovered until just about seven months from now, while the New Dallas cache won't be found until the time of the Word of Blake Jihad in 3067."

"General, you now have my complete and undivided attention…"

February 7th, 3027
NAIS College of Biology & Medicine
Early Evening

The discussions that LTG Hodges had with Hanse Davion and Quintus Allard are long and involved, focusing on the differences between Hodges’ timeline, the timeline of the Inner Sphere and where the two diverged. Field Marshal Yvonne Davion from the Division of Military Information joined the discussion and, among the group, it was realized that Hodges’ appearance presented an unparalleled advantage to the Federated Suns (especially when the existence of the Star League caches on Helm & New Dallas and the future appearance of the Clans were brought up).

Field Marshal Davion speaks up and says “your highness, it is plain to me that we must seize the Helm and New Dallas caches before the Draconis Combine, the Capellan Confederation or the Free World League become aware of them. Of course, given your upcoming marriage to Melissa Steiner, Archon Katrina should be made aware of what happened…”

Minister Allard interjects and says “I completely agree with you, Field Marshal. However, given the sensitivity of General Hodges’ information, it is my recommendation be conveyed via a command circuit of jumpships.”

Hanse Davion nods and replies “Yvonne, Quinus, this project has absolute and unconditional priority over eveything else; make it happen.”

“Yes, highness.”

“Dr. Stewart, is there any reason why General Hodges needs to stay in hospital any longer?”

“None, your highness. All that needs to be done for my patient is to update his immunizations. Beyond that, I was planning to discharge him tomorrow morning…”

“Very good. General Hodges, there are duties which I must attend to. For now, I’ll leave you in Quintus’ capable hands. As for visiting your house, would tomorrow afternoon be convenient?”

“Your highness, I’d be delighted; in fact, I’ll throw some steaks on the grill and we’ll have a barbecue. I have an extensive video and music library, so there will be entertainment available.” The First Prince’s curiosity is immediately piqued, and he responds “tomorrow afternoon, then.”

“Thank you, sir.”

After the First Price and Field Marshal Davion leave, Quintus Allard says “General Hodges, I can’t even begin to comprehend the shock that you have gone through. To ease your transition, I am assigning one of my agents to you as a liason.”

“Harrumph. Don’t you mean ‘babysitter’?”

“Hardly anything like that; she’ll get you anything that you need.”

“Minister Allard, who do you have in mind?”

“Countess Kym Sorenson.”

General Hodges thinks silently to himself ‘Kym Sorenson? Aww, f**k.’

“The name is familiar to me, minister. Sorensen, Kym, Countess; does not have a good relationship with her father. Father owns Sorenson Mechanics and is the main supplier of engines for the Typhoon Hovercraft in service with the AFFS. You sent her to Solaris VII late in 3026 because you and the First Prince had doubts as to Morgan Hasek-Davion’s loyalty; Sorensen’s operations removed those doubts entirely.”

“Err, yes; you are correct. Agent Sorensen will be here to pick you up tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. Given your value as an intelligence source, would you mind having your home placed under surveillance by my agents?”

“Not at all, sir; if there’s one thing I am cognizant of, it’s the need for OPSEC. I do have one question, however..”

“Ask away.”

“Are you and the First Prince smoking men? I’ve got a good supply of Gran Corona cigars in my humidor; probably the last genuine Cuban cigars anywhere in existence.”

“The First Prince does enjoy a good smoke, now and again; so do I.”

“Excellent; dinner is on me, then. So are the cigars and the beer…”

February 8th, 3028
New Avalon Institute of Science
9:00 AM

General Hodges completes his discharge paperwork and is discharged from the NAIS College of Biology and Medicine. As he exits the front door, he's greeted by a good-looking blond of medium height. Before Hodges thinks to respond, the woman says " General Hodges, I presume?"

"Right the first time. You must be Kym Sorenson; your reputation precedes you, madam. Quintus Allard told me that you'd be picking me up this morning. I must say, that job you did for the First Prince on Solaris VII back in 3026 was quite a piece of work…"

"Quite. I have been briefed on your knowledge base; it's quite extensive. Now, let's be off."

Sorenson nods to the team in the escort vehicles, then she and General Hodges board the Countess' own ground car. Given the size of the NAIS campus, it takes approximately 15 minutes to reach General Hodges' house.

The three vehicles drive up and park out in front; Sorensen directs the members of her team to take up positions on the perimeter around the house. General Hodges pauses momentarily to salute the colors on the flagpole out front, then escorts Sorensen inside. Next to the front door on the right hand side is an ancient artillery piece with a bronze barrel; on the left is a pyramidal stack of cannon balls.

"This is quite a place you have here, sir."

"Yes, it is; it's a 14-room two story Colonial with a wrap-around deck and an attached garage in the back yard. Before NAIS permanently changed my station, this is where I hung my hat between duty assignments. My wife and I raised our children here… "Just then, General Hodges again realizes the gravity of his personal situation; his shoulders slump and it is only by a conscious act of will that he gathers himself and continues."

"I beg your pardon, General. I can't even begin to understand what you must be thinking and feeling right now…"

"That's quite alright. Now that we're here, let me give you the nickel tour. That artillery piece you saw is an original Model 1857 12-pdr Napoleon which saw service at the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War; the cannon balls are also Civil War-vintage, having been recovered from places like Pittsburg Landing, Fredericksburg, Shiloh and Stones River."

In the living room, Hodges stops in front of the fireplace and points out the various items on display on the mantelpiece In the center, there is a display rack with a single-shot carbine, a long barreled revolver and a cavalry saber in a battered scabbard Next to the rack on either side are displayed two very-large revolvers; off to the side, there is a standing display case with a selection of Civil War shoulder arms Sorensen examines the weapons and says "General, these weapons are unfamiliar to me. Could you tell me their background?"

"Certainly, the carbine is a Springfield trap-door, chambered for the .45-70 blackpowder cartridge. The revolver is a Colt single-action Army, chambered in .45-LC. What makes these guns and the saber historically-significant is that they were carried by members of the 7th Cavalry at the Battle of the Little Big Horn on June 25th, 1876. Those two guns next to the rack are older than that, as they are original Walker Colt dragoon revolvers. These particular specimens were carried by a member of Captain Samuel Walker's Company 'C', and are so marked on the barrel; as for the long guns, they are examples of weapons used by the Union and the Confederacy in the Civil War."

"You've got quite a collection, sir."

"What you see is only a small part of what I have; the rest is in the magazine under the garage."

"Garage? I take it that you have a number of vehicles?"

"Yes, I do. If you'll please follow me, I'd be delighted to show you."

Hodges and Sorenson exit the living room out through the kitchen and enter the garage through a side door. A light switch is flipped for better illumination, and what Sorenson sees are a number of cars whose bodywork and paint shine as if they had just come off the dealership floor; Hodges shows a great deal of pride as he describes each of the vehicles in detail.

"Countess, I have always had an interest in classic American cars; what are see here are examples of some of the most historically-significant cars from different eras of automobile history. For example, I have a 1977 Pontiac ‘Firebird’ Trans-Am with the W72 performance package, a 1978 Chevrolet Monte Carlo ‘Super Sport’ with a 454 Hemi titanium-block engine, twin variable-pitch turbochargers, intercooler, supercharger, upgraded suspension, bucket seats, six-point safety harnesses and full roll cage, a 1969 Dodge Charger with a 440 Magnum ‘6-pack engine’ and full roll cage, a 1968 Ford Mustang GT fastback with a 428 Cobra Jet V8 engine and performance package, a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette with a 427 L89 big-block V8, a 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 with a competition-model engine, a 1957 Ford Thunderbird with a 312 engine, Holley 4-barrel carburetor and McCulloch/Paxton centrifugal supercharger, a 1949 Oldsmobile Rocket 88, a 1935 Duesenberg SJ LaGrande Dual-Cowl Phaeton and, last but not least, a custom-built Orange County chopper; of this collection, my pride and joy is the 1935 Duesenberg SJ.”

“General Hodges, I don’t profess to know much about automobiles; from the look of your collection, it seems like they came out of a museum…”

“Countess, you wouldn’t be far wrong on that issue. IN other matters, Might I ask what time the First Prince and his party are coming over?”

“Minister Allard thought you might ask that, so he wanted me to tell you that His Highness and selected embers of his staff will be here at 3:00 PM; the First Prince is nothing if not punctual.”

“Excellent. Why don’t you make yourself comfortable in the living room while I start getting dinner ready? While you’re waiting, I’ll put a movie on, one that I think you’ll find rather appropriate (given your background as an intelligence agent).”

“Oh, what movie might that be?”

“Have you ever heard of a character named James Bond?”

“I don’t believe so, General…”

“Well, Bond is the central character in a film series which began in 1963 with Dr. No and was still going as of 2019, before NAIS pulled me into this reality. The series deals with the adventures of a fictional British secret service agent who fights against organizations like SMERSH, SPECTRE and various criminal and industrial overlords with dreams of world domination. The movie I am going to show you is titled ‘Goldfinger’; it came out in 1964 and I regard it as the best entry in the entire film series.”

General Hodges invites the countess to take a seat on the living room couch opposite the 85” flat screen TV on the wall. A moment or two passes as he slots a CD into the player and leaves the room to begin work on dinner. While Hodges is away, the movie’s opening sequence begins to play; ending with Shirley Bassey’s superb performance of the main theme…

Goldfinger…
He’s the man, the man with a Midas Touch
A spider’s touch

Such a cold finger
Beckons you to enter his web of sin
But don’t go in…..

Two hours later, the end credits of Goldfinger roll. Kym Sorenson looks to Hodges and says "was that really the way things were back then in the intelligence business?"

"Hardly, countess. James Bond was a fictional character created by Ian Fleming based on his experiences in the Second World War, where he worked for Rear Admiral John Godfrey (who was Director of Intelligence for the Royal Navy). Though entertaining, Bond's exploits bear as much relation to reality as Shakespeare's play 'Richard III' does to the real story of the King."

"Indeed."

The next several hours pass in discussion of various topics, until just before 3:00 PM, Sorenson's communicator beeps. She quickly looks at the screen and says "General, the First Prince and his party are five minutes out."

"Thanks for the heads up."

Shortly thereafter, the two head outside to await Hanse Davion's arrival.

3:00 PM

A staff car and two escort vehicles pulls up in front of General Hodges' house. While Hanse' bodyguards take up positions around the building, he and Hodges exchange greetings.

"Good afternoon, your highness; welcome to my home."

"Thank you for having us, General. In truth, I've been looking forward to coming here."

Aside from Hanse Davion, the official party includes Field Marshal Yvonne Davion, Quintus Allard and Morgan Hasek-Davion. The group follows General Hodges inside, and takes their seats at the dining room table. Already, the dishes and salads have been laid out; last are the steaks that Hodges cooked with his own hand. A bottle of wine is passed around, glasses are filled and Hodges taps on his glass to propose a toast…

"The President of the United States"

From the perspective of General Hodges' guests, the office of President of the United States was last occupied nearly 1,000 years ago. For Hodges, however, the office was still occupied as of just a few days ago.

The First Prince stands from his chair and says "General, one of the reasons why I wanted to come here today is that there are topics of that I must discuss with you. I have consulted with my senior staff and decided to make attempts on the Helm and New Dallas caches. If they are as extensive as your information says they are, you will have my eternal gratitude."

"Thank you, your highness. Regarding what is to be done with the contents, the Helm cache is the more valuable of the two by far; therefore, you should make an equal split with the Lyrans. I'm quite sure that Archon Katrina would appreciate it. As for New Dallas, I respectfully suggest that you have multiple copies made and distributed. There two reasons for this; First, it will help disguise the smash & grab you did on Helm and the second is that it will get you major credit with the Capellans, the Kuritas and the Free Worlders. As for Comstar, the sensibilities of that toaster-worshipping bunch of morons mean precisely less than nothing to me."

"General, I am inclined to agree with your proposal. However, before I commit to its implementation, I'll have to discuss it with the Privy Council. In view of your value as an intelligence source, I have decided to offer you a commission in the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns; your rank would be that of Major General, with the associated pay and privileges."

"Well sir, as I am, as they say 'between engagements', I will be pleased to accept your generous offer. However, I will point out that, as you begin to act upon the information I give you, history will begin to change. The more time that passes, the bigger the changes will be. Certain macroscopic developments however (such as your impending marriage to Melissa Steiner and the coming invasion by the Clans) are still going to happen."

"True enough, General; Minister Allard assumes as much…"

"Your Highness, there is also the matter of Comstar…"

"General, you have already made your dislike of Comstar known."

"Sir, you don't know the half of it. Those Ma Bell wanna-bes are hardly the neutral organization they portray themselves as. For example, they have an enormous stockpile of Star League-era mechs, artillery, vehicles and other equipment cached at various locations on Earth (as well as a small fleet of operational warships hidden in the outer reaches of the Sol System. In May of next year, they will carry out a false-flag operation against their own HPG station on the planet of Sarna (which planet being one of the targets in your planned actions against House Liao). In this action, Comstar will disguise its mechs as being part of the 5th Syrtis Fusiliers and use them to destroy the station; with this 'justification' in hand, Comstar will place the FedSuns under a communications interdict and reveal the existence of the ComGuards."

"General, I am not overly concerned about Comstar's interdict, as I have ways around it; none of us, however, knew about Comstar's secret stockpiles. For that information, I thank you once again."

"You're quite welcome, your highness. I am aware of those 'black box' fax machines and, though their transmission capabilities are limited, they will prove to be of immense strategic value in the coming conflict."

"Err, yes…"

"Your highness, while I was still in the hospital, I made myself familiar with armor doctrine and tank technology as it stands in the Inner Sphere today. I believe I can significantly improve the tactical capability of your tanks, as well as the operation effectiveness of your armored forces."

Just then, Field Marshal Yvonne Davion speaks up and says "what can you do for us, General?"

"Marshal, if you'll recall your military history, there was an engagement on Earth called the Battle of 73 Easting. I was there, with E Troop 2nd ACR under the command of Captain H.R McMaster. In that engagement, we were silver-bulleting enemy tanks at a range of 2,000 yards. By way of comparison, your own tanks are lucky if they can hit an enemy vehicle at 650 yards (less than one-third the distance…).

"Very impressive. What kind of weapons did you use?"

"The main battle tank employed by the United States Army was the M-1 Abrams. It is armed with a Rheinmetall 120-mm smoothbore cannon that had a barrel 44 calibers in length; Great Britain and Germany used the same gun (but with a 55-caliber barrel). The muzzle velocity of the U.S version of this weapon ranged between 5,200 and 5,700 fps. One of the reasons why the 120-mm gun was so effective was that we had a stabilization system for it.."

"Stabilization system, what is that?"

"A gun stabilizer is a system fitted to a weapon that allows the gunner to counteract the effects of his tank's motion, along with those of the target; a gun with a stabilizer can shoot as accurately when moving at full speed as it would while standing still."

Field Marshal Davion looks to the First Prince and says "your highness, the AFFS absolutely must have that system." Hanse turns his gaze to General Hodges and says "can you help NAIS engineers develop a stabilization system?"

"I'd be delighted to, sir. Also, I can and will help your weapons engineers greatly improve cannon technology."

"How so?"

"Your highness, my father topped out as a brigadier general in the United States Army. Among his latter assignments were as the XO of the M1 Tank Test-Bed Project, project officer of the XM30 electrothermal gun project and project officer of the Component Advanced Technology Test Bed project; he was also the US Army's designated liaison with Lockheed-Martin on their M1 'Thumper' project. I have copies of my father's notes in my files; with this information, my own experience and proper engineering support, I can come up with a gun design that will hit your enemies like the hammer of Thor on a bad day. Look at it this way, sir; if you can hit your enemies and they can’t hit you, guess who wins?"

Hanse Davion nods and replies "I am convinced, General; let this be your first assignment for the AFFS."

"Yes, sir. May I respectfully ask that the Lyran Commonwealth be kept in the loop on this project?"

"Of course; the destinies of House Davion and House Steiner are about to be united, so any progress we make will be shared by them."

"Very good, sir." A moment or two of pause, then General Hodges says "gentlemen, ladies, dinner is served."

Once dinner is finished, cigars and beer are called for and served out on the front deck of the house. Afterwards, General Hodges says "your highness, given that you are going ahead with the attempt of the Helm and New Dallas caches, the movie I have chosen for tonight is particularly appropriate."

"What have you chosen?"

"It's an old war film that came out in 1970; it's called 'Kelly's Heroes."

As with the movie he showed Kym Sorenson, Hodges slots the CD into his player and the film's opening sequence begins to play.

'Friends all tried to warn me but I held my head up high
All the time to warn me but I only passed them by
They all tried to tell me but I guess I didn’t care
I turned my back and left them standing there

All the burning bridges that are falling after me
All the lonely feelings and the burning memories
Everyone I left behind each time I closed the door
Burning bridges lost forevermore…'

Two hours and 25 minutes later, 'Kelly's Heroes' ends. There are a few moments of silence before Hanse Davion speaks and says "General Hodges, I can see why you chose that movie."

"Indeed, your highness. In comparison to the raids on the Helm and New Dallas caches, the parallels between the movie's plot and what you have planned (a dangerous mission behind enemy lines and a high-value target) are exact. I only wish I could come along for the ride….

"My advisers don't think that would be a good idea, given your value as an intelligence source; I am inclined to agree with them. Still, if the two caches are as well-stocked as you say they are, I and Archon Katrina will be eternally grateful; more to the point, I will give you one of my developed planetary systems as a landhold."

"Thank you, your highness; that is extremely generous of you. As I can't go along on the raid, I'll use my time in starting to develop the systems I told you of; specifically, weapon stabilization systems, an electrothermal/liquid-propellant tank cannon and caseless ammunition. Other items that I intend to develop are an improved rangefinder, better tank armor and improved tank construction techniques

"When can you begin your work?"

"Right away, sir. I would need the services of a well-equipped engineering laboratory (one that has manufacturing capability) and a staff to assist me. First up would be the weapon stabilizer; with my previous experience as a tanker in the United States Army and my own engineering talents, I believe that I could have a workable prototype available for testing in 30 days. Next would be the electrothermal tank gun; as for caseless ammunition, the technology has some relation to the ETG. Therefore, development of both could take place at the same time; perhaps three to four months at the outside. As for the other projects, the more staff I have, the faster I can bring them to completion."

"General, Dr. Riva Allard is the head of the NAIS College of Engineering. I will issue an order directing her and the College Staff to cooperate with you in all possible ways; the sooner your new systems are developed, the better off the Federated Suns and the Lyran Commonwealth will be."

"Your highness, once tanks equipped with the new weapons and technology are available in sufficient numbers, I will develop a new training syllabus. Your armor crews are good; I'll make them better…a lot better."

"Very well. Do you have anything else before I and my staff take out leave?"

"Just a couple of things, sir. First, do I presume correctly that NAIS has a military contingent?"

"You would be correct in that; NAIS has a College of Military Science; formerly, this institution was known as the New Avalon Military Academy. Why do you ask?"

"It wouldn't do to let my military skills wither on the vine, so I'd like to conduct my personal training regimen there; with the staff, I'd like to lead a couple of morning runs with the cadets. I used to do the same thing with the troops under my command; to the point where I would select a particular company and go along with them when they did their morning run. It wasn't long before I heard that whatever company I chose to run with would consider my being there as a mark of distinction."

"The College of Military Science will be directed to comply with your request. You did say that there were other things you wanted to bring up, General…"

"Yes I did, your highness. I respectfully ask that I be included among your groomsmen when you and Archon-Designate Melissa Steiner get married; as the wedding will take place on Earth, I'd like to avail myself of the opportunity for a visit; to see if anything of what I remember still survives."

"Granted willingly. Next?"

"Lastly, I respectfully request that NAIS make no further attempt to duplicate the process that brought me to this reality. You see, from my standpoint, you, Archon Katrina, the other House lords, the Inner Sphere, the Star League and everything else was nothing more than a fictional construct. Now that what I believed to be fictional has proven to be real, it is logical to assume that other fictional settings are just as real. While it would be great to have the services of the Dinochrome Brigade (a single unit of which could solo everything involved on both sides of the Battle of Tukayyid) or, a legion of OGRE MK-VIs at your command, it is just as likely that NAIS would establish contact with realities that are far too horrible to contemplate. On the sliding scale of things that you pray to the Deity of your choice for deliverance from, there are groups like the Borg and the Daleks; upwards on the same scale are a delightful bunch of reprobates called the Legion of Doom. Last and worst of all is a setting that, if the Devil himself were to come upon it, he'd take one look and run in the opposite direction; let me tell you about something called Warhammer 40,000…"

45 minutes later, Hanse Davion's face looks like someone walked across his own grave; the Prince's response is succinct and to the point.

"I need a drink"

February 22nd, 3028
New Avalon Institute of Science
College of Engineering
0900 hours

With the preparations for the strikes against Helm and New Dallas well under way, General Hodges reports to NAIS’ College of Engineering to begin his new assignment for the AFFS, By Hanse Davion’s personal order, Hodges has been given the services of one of the College’s laboratories for use in his work. Upon his arrival, he is met by Dr. Riva Allard and greetings are exchanged.

“Good morning, Doctor. I am pleased to meet you.”

“Good morning, General; the pleasure is all mine. I have been wanting to meet you ever since the Transference Event.”

“Ahh; so the communications ‘experiment’ which brought me to this reality was your baby. I trust that you received the order from the First Prince that no further experiments of that type are to be conducted…”

“I did. I also agree with your reasoning in that matter. Matters in the Inner Sphere are complicated enough, without the appearance of those beings and entities that you mentioned. Now, if you will please follow me, I’ll introduce you to your staff.”

“At your convenience, Doctor.”

A short time later, the two arrive in a spacious and well-equipped laboratory, with all manner of machine tools and other equipment standing ready to hand. Among this array are 6-axis CNC milling machines, wire EDM cutters, laser cutters and other fabrication devices.

There are a number of people present, and Dr. Allard makes the introductions. First to speak is Dr. Benjamin Banzai, who says “General Hodges, when I heard of the circumstances of your arrival, I just had to meet you. Dr. Allard told me of your purpose in coming to the College of Engineering; if you are amenable, I’d like to offer you the services of Professor Douglas Running Elk; he’s one of my best scholars and research scientists.”

“I’d be delighted to have him on the team, Dr. Banzai.”

The two men shake hands on this, and Hodges thinks to himself ‘this guy really does look like Jeff Goldblum. Note to self; invite him to the house for a showing of Independence Day, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai and Jurassic Park. I wonder what he and others would make of Pacific Rim.... ’

To the other assembled staff, General Hodges says “ladies and gentlemen. good morning. You all know who I am and how I came to be here. The First Prince has commissioned me to help improve the tank technology employed by the AFFS, and to create new tactics and doctrine so that the new technology can be employed properly. The first two projects we’ll be working on will be weapon stabilization and a new type of tank gun. After that, new tank armor and tougher tank chassis will be our goals.”

One of the staff raises his hand and says “excuse me, sir. What is weapon stabilization, as you call it?”

“Weapon stabilization is a system whereby a tank gun’s point of aim can be kept on target, no matter how fast the tank is moving or how rough the ground is. It also counteracts how fast the target is moving. Such a system ensures that a tank can accurately fire on its opponents at greater ranges. In the 20th and 21st centuries, it was considered ‘holy writ’ in the United States Army that if you can hit a target, you can kill it; it was true then and it is certainly true now.”

“How about the tank gun that you’re talking about? We’re all familiar with the autocannons that battlemechs and armored vehicles use; these come in a large number of types, with calibers that range between 30-mm and 203-mm. How will your gun be any different?”

Hodges replies “since my arrival, I have familiarize myself with cannon technology as it exists in the Inner Sphere; guns firing fixed ammunition with metallic cases. My gun will employ caseless ammunition (thus allowing more ammunition by weight and volume); the propellant charges with be ignited electrothermally. An electrothermal gun uses a powerful electric charge to vaporize the propellant and turn it into plasma; the creation of this plasma can be very precisely controlled, thus allowing for a softer launch (less recoil), while giving the gun greater range and more damage potential than one using primer-ignited propellant.”

A pause, then ”the effectiveness of the new tank gun will be enhanced by other technologies that we’ll be developing, such as a multi-spectral rangefinder and an improved targeting computer

Professor Douglas Running Elk speaks up next and says “what are your instructions, sir?”

“As of now, I’m dividing you into separate working groups. One of these groups will be working on weapon stabilization, one will be working on the gun and another on the ammunition; still others will be assigned to work on the rangefinder and the targeting computer. Professor, you’ll be working with me as my second-on-command; we’ll head the weapon-stabilization group. To the rest of you, my office door will always be open; if you have an idea on how research can be speed up, or how some particular process can be improved, don’t hesitate to come to me at any time. For now, let’s get to work.”

Operation: Kelly
February 25th, 3028
New Avalon and elsewhere

Over the previous two weeks, messages were exchanged via fax machine between the offices of the First Prince and the Archon, and also between the highest levels of the AFFS and the LCAF regarding how to proceed with Operation: Kelly (this was done to keep Comstar in the dark about what was happening). In view of the upcoming alliance between the Federated Suns and the Lyran Commonwealth, it was a joint decision between Hanse Davion and Katrina Steiner that the raids on Helm and New Dallas should be conducted as near to simultaneously as possible. As for the two halves of the operation, the AFFS contingent is comprised of Marshal Ran Felsner as the CO and Colonel Ardan Sortek as the XO. Opertional assets are the Davion Heavy Guards RCT, the 11th Lyran Guards, the Kell Hounds (representing the interests of Archon Katrina Steiner) and a technical support team from NAIS. Aside from the transport capacity for the AFFS elements, a total of 3 Monolith-class jumpships, 16 Mammoth-class dropships and 8 Mule-class dropships have been assigned the material from the cache on Helm.

In regards to New Dallas, the LCAF elements are three regiments from the 1st Lyran Guards Division (the 1st, 3rd and 5th Lyran Guards); the commanding officer is General Edward Regis and the XO is Ryan Steiner. As for transport, given that the New Dallas cache is much smaller than the one on Helm, one Monolith-class jumpship, 2 Mammoth-class dropships and 8 Mule-class dropships have been assigned.

By agreement between the First Prince and the Archon, the proceeds from the Helm Cache are to be divided equally between House Davion and House Steiner; the Helm data core will be duplicated, with copies going to the Federated Suns and the Lyran Commonwealth. The New Dallas core will be duplicated, with copies going to the Draconis Combine, the Capellan Confederation and the Free Worlds League. To muddy things up with the Draconis Combine, information will be developed and planted that Duke Hassid Ricol gained knowledge of the Helm Cache and intended to seize it for himself (without sharing any of the material with House Kurita.

The first phase of the operation began when a unit of troops from the DMI were sent ‘sub rosa’ to the world of Stewart in the Free Worlds League to retrieve a certain computer chip held by Earl Hector Stewart. The importance of this chip was that it was the deed of gift when Helm had been granted to one of the previous Earls of Stewart; additionally, the chip contains a command sequence hidden in the software that, when plugged into the gate access computer for the Helm facility, will grant the user authorized access and shut down the security systems.

Second, while the operation was underway, other units of the AFFS conducted diversionary raids in other parts of the Free Worlds League in order to distract the attention of Captain-General Janos Marik and deceive him as to what was going on.

Getting Down to Business
March 7th-April 21st, 3028
New Avalon Institute of Science
College of Engineering

Beginning on February 23rd, General Hodges and his team undertake two weeks of intensive preparation work. For testing platforms, Hodges was given the use of a pair of tanks (a Patton and a Rommel) and two battlemechs (a MAD-3R Marauder and a WHM-6R Warhammer); the team also received files with a complete set of blueprints for these designs.

The team’s first order of business will be to strip out the weaponry, lay it aside and then consult with the plans to see how the vehicles can best be retrofitted. For his part, General Hodges duplicated all of his files relating to late 20th/early 21st-century tank design and downloaded them to the computers in his laboratory. Next, his information is used to build several copies of the Vincorion weapon stabilizer (the system used in the turret of the M-1 Abrams main battle tank; something that General Hodges is intimately familiar with).

Twelve copies of the Vincorion system were built; these were fitted to the weapons removed from the tanks and the battlemechs. Then, the combined assemblages were placed on test stands and run through a series of exercises so their operating parameters could be determined. After the exercises were concluded, the weapons were re-mounted. At this same time, work on an infrared laser rangefinder was begun. Once again, General Hodges drew on his experience as a tank officer and created duplicates of the M-1 Abrams rangefinder (specifically, the ELRF built by Hensoldt); this system used a solid-state laser emitter with a 50-mm lens, and is accurate to +/-1.5 meters out to a range of 25,000 meters. Recognizing that not all battlefield circumstances are amenable to the use of infrared lasers, the new version of the ELRF (titled the Improved Eyesafe Rangefinder; IERF) was designed to incorporate visual and radar functions. Twelve copies of the IERF were built, tested and incorporated into the fire control systems of the tanks and battlemechs; so fitted, the machines went out to the NAIS testing range.

General Hodges and his team next turned their attention towards developing caseless ammunition, so that autocannons, machineguns and their feed systems could be re-fitted to use it. Finally, work was begun on both electrothermal/chemical and electrothermal/kinetic cannons. By increasing the size of his team and organizing his people into three separate shifts, General Hodges was able to squeeze 4 ½ months of work into just 45 days.

Getting the Goods
April 25th, 3028
2:00 PM local time

While on one of his very few off days at home, General Hodges is relaxing in his living room when there is a knock on the door. He goes to open it and sees Kym Sorenson standing there with a businesslike smile on her face.

“Good afternoon, General; I hope I’m not disturbing you.”

“Not at all, Countess. The NAIS team and I have been working long hours developing the new weapons and technology that I promised the First Prince; not wanting to get burned out, I decided that it was time for me to take a break. What brings you here?’

“Sir, Director Allard just received a priority message from Marshal Ran Felsner saying that Operation Kelly had been carried out, and that it was a complete and unqualified success.”

“Please come in and take a seat; I’ve got a feeling that this is going to take a good deal of talking.”

“Thank you, sir.”

So situated, Sorenson waits for General Hodges to bring refreshments. Hodges comes out of the kitchen with a tray bearing a bucket of ice, two glasses and four bottles of Coke he says “enjoy these while you can; I’ve only got a couple of cases left…”

Sorensen takes an appreciative sip, then says “sir, the specifics of the message are that Operation Kelly began in earnest back on February 25th, with preparations beginning on February 11th. Your information was correct on all accounts, even to the smallest detail; you’d be interested in knowing that the code phrase used to deactivate the Helm cache’s security systems and enable access to its databases was a certain quote from your President Thomas Jefferson ‘the greatest bill in our whole code is that for the diffusion of knowledge among the people’.

“How appropriate. Jefferson was one of the most intellectually-gifted Presidents the United States ever had. President William J. Clinton once hosted a gathering of Nobel Prize laureates at the White House; afterwards, he said that it was the greatest collection of scientific talent ever under this roof except when Thomas Jefferson dined here alone. That comment (more than anything else) defined Jefferson’s genius.”

“I understand, sir. If you wish to see it, Director Allard has furnished me a copy of just what was recovered from Helm. He also wanted me to tell you that the spoiling attacks elsewhere in the Free Worlds League were successful in diverting the Captain-General’s attention, and that he and his officers are completely unaware of the operation that had been carried out under their very noses.”

“How about the material from New Dallas; was it successfully recovered?”

“Yes, sir. By your suggestion, copies are being made of the New Dallas database for delivery to the other great houses. I can only imagine how Comstar’s First Circuit would react if they find out.”

“Not ‘if, countess; when. As much as it is to be hoped for, no security is perfect; the best we can expect is for the Masquerade to be carried out as long as possible. As far as those toaster-worshipping shitheads in Comstar are concerned, the angrier they get, the better I like it...”

“Very true. Now, I’ll pass you the files so you can read them yourself. If anything, the amount of materiel on Helm was much greater that your records indicated; in fact, examples of new ‘mech technology were recovered, along with the data files and operational prototypes of a previously unknown operation called ‘Project Titan’.”

General Hodges takes the files and begins to read. The information contained in them is as follows:

While General Hodges continues to read, Kym Sorensen says “sir, back in the days of the Star League, the defense forces were divided into the Regulars and the Royals. The Regular divisions were just that, while the Royals were the elite; they got the very best personnel and training, as well as first crack at new equipment. Beyond the Royals were the Camerons; these guys were the very best of the best and their equipment surpassed everything else in terms of reliability and combat effectiveness. The battlemechs that were taken from Helm are all of ‘Cameron’ quality, while the vehicles are all of ‘Royal’ grade.”

“Tell me of the ‘Project Titan’ material.”

“Yes, sir. Until Operation Kelly, the only knowledge of battlemechs weighing more than 100 tons came from 2775, when General Kerensky’s forces were closing upon Terra during OPERATION CHIEFTAIN. Amaris was never a very stable person to begin with; so, Kerensky’s forces got closer, he began to search for weapons that could turn the tide against the coming onslaught. Once of these was the Matar. This battlemech weighed 110 tons, and would have stood a full four meters taller even than a AS7-D Atlas (had the Matar gone into production). The Matar project was doomed from the beginning, both from the impossible design specifications and Amaris’ continual interference. Eventually, he had most of the Matar’s design team executed for ‘Treasonous Incompetence’. However, the project’s leader was Rifkin Amaris (one of the usurper’s cousins), who avoided execution by heaping the blame for the project’s failure on the development teams. Afterwards, Rifkin assumed a false name and fled Terra with his design research. While in exile, he hoped to continue the Matar project. Unfortunately for him, General Kerensky’s forces caught up to him and placed him under arrest.”

“Sounds like a real scumbag. What happened to the guy?”

“He was put on trial for crimes against humanity, along with 36 other Class A war criminals. He was convicted of just one count, but that was enough to get him a life sentence. That sentence turned out to be just 11 months, as he was murdered behind bars.”

“Well, someone in the SLDF’s R & D section must have retained Rifkin’s ideas and improved upon them...”

“Those are the thoughts of the First Prince and Marshal Felsner, also. In gratitude for your information (without which Operation Kelly might not have been successful), the First Prince has given orders that you are to be allowed your pick of the materiel recovered from Helm.”

A minute or two of silent thought follows, then General Hodges says “For now, I’ll have one of the Awesome-IIC battlemechs, one of those Nighthawk battlesuits and two of those Mauser 960s.”

“That’s all? The First Prince and Marshal Felsner were thinking of awarding you up to 5% of the haul.”

A smile crosses Hodges’ face as he replies “what I have asked for is all that I want, nothing more. Would you please convey my deep sense of gratitude to the First Prince?’

“Very good, sir.”

April 26th, 3028
New Avalon Institute of Science
College of Science and Engineering

Every so often, General Hodges conducts meetings with his senior staff in order to assess the pace of development in the projects he’s working on for Hanse Davion. On April 26th, 3028, one of these meetings is in progress in Hodges’ office when, suddenly, Quintus Allard shows up.

General Hodges responds “good afternoon, Minister. I am glad to see you, as I have some good news for the First Prince. I can see by the look on your face that’s something’s going on…”

“Indeed, General. I am here at the express direction of the First Prince to tell you that House Davion’s share of the material from Operation Kelly is on its way to New Avalon as we speak. Per your previous request, one of the Awesome-IIC battlemechs has been reserved for you, as has one of the suits of Nighthawk power armor and two Mauser-960s. The materiel should be here in about two weeks.”

“Please convey my thanks to the First Prince. Is there any other information?”

“There is, actually. In my capacity as Director of MIIO, information was passed to House Kurita that Duke Hassid Ricol had become aware of the Helm Cache and was making preparations to seize the material as his own. My agents in place on Luthien related to me that Takashi Kurita was so incensed at Ricol’s treachery that he didn’t allow the Duke to use the garden to make up for it. Instead, Ricol was handed over for some attention to the ISF; one week later, the Coordinator personally beheaded him.”

“Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say. What of the New Dallas memory core?”

“It was duplicated, with a half-dozen copies each being forwarded to the Draconis Combine, the Capellan Confederation and the Free Worlds League by various means. As a matter of course, the First Prince ordered that the New Dallas core be scrubbed of any and all information relating to weapons of mass destruction.”

“That was a smart move. The United States and other countries had all kinds of problems with that crap in the 20th and 21st centuries; I presume that the copies of the core coming to House Davion and House Steiner are fully complete”

“They are, General.”

“What of security preparations for the Helm cache? As good as you think they are, word will eventually leak out.”

“I anticipated that fact. As it so happens, there are a number of low-level agents of Kurita’s Internal Security Force implanted in the ranks of the Davion Heavy Guards; these agents have been flipped. Through them, information was passed to House Kurita that the battlemechs, vehicles, ammunition, equipment and other supplies was retrieved; but that the depot’s memory core was lost when Helm’s self-destruct mechanism was activated.”

“I see. My reference information had no mention on the specifics of the self-destruct system; just what was it?”

“The Helm depot was powered by a large fusion reactor, which had been specifically designed so that it could overload and explode when so ordered. The resulting detonation was equal to a 50-megaton thermonuclear blast.”

“Ouch; I’ll bet that left a mark…”

“It certainly did; a smoking crater a couple of miles wide.”

“Whatever else happens, that will certainly keep the other Great houses and those toga-wearing toaster-worshipping ****** in Comstar off our backs for a while; however, I’ll wager that none of them will be pleased to hear that House Davion and House Steiner now have a large number of Cameron-grade battlemechs and Royal-grade vehicles in their possession. Speaking of which, I hope someone had the good sense to keep those mobile HPG systems under tight wraps; if word got out that we and House Steiner have them, Comstar wouldn’t react at all well…”

“I issued orders to that effect. Now, with the business at hand out of the say, you said you had some good news for the First Prince?”

“Indeed, I did. I am pleased to report that development and testing of the weapon stabilization system and the multi-spectral rangefinder has been successfully completed, and that both items are ready to go into production.”

“Excellent; I will so inform the First Prince. As a further mark of His Highness esteem for what you have done, he has issued an invitation for you to come to the royal palace and have dinner with him on the 28th at 6:00 pm sharp.”

“I’ll be please to accept the invitation. Might I invite Countess Sorensen to come with me as my guest?”

“The First Prince has no objection to this.”

“Very well, sir, I’ll be there.”

April 28th, 3028
Royal Palace
Avalon City
5:45 pm local time

Just as General Hodges is putting the finishing touches on his dress blue uniform, there is a knock on the door. He opens it and sees Kym Sorenson standing there wearing a formal evening gown with a scoop neck and a floor-length hem.

“Good evening, Countess. Thank you for accepting my invitation.”

“You’re welcome, General. I was pleased to hear that the First Prince was going to recognize you for your efforts on behalf of the Federated Commonwealth; when I received your invitation to attend dinner at the palace, I could do nothing else but accept.”

“I’m glad that you did. By the way, you look stunning in that outfit. As for me, I haven’t worn this uniform since I attended the 2019 State of the Union address..”

“Indeed. My car is standing by outside to take us to the palace.”

“Countess, if you don’t mind, I’d like to do the driving.”

“Alright; please call me Kym,

General Hodges steps out the front door and returns a minute or two later at the wheel of one of the vehicles in his collection. He pulls up in front of the house, gestures theatrically and says “your chariot awaits, my lady.”

A look of great interest crosses Sorensen‘s face as she replies “I’ve never seen anything like this car outside of old video footage. What kind of vehicle is it?”

“This is a 1935 Duesenberg SJ LaGrande Dual-Cowl Phaeton. During the first third of the 20th century, the Duesenberg marquee was the absolute last word in luxury transportation. Only 36 SJs were ever built and of those 36, this example is the only one fitted with a Curtiss Conqueror V-1570 liquid-cooled aircraft engine. Compared to the standard SJ engine, the V-1570 produced 50% more power.”

“A truly magnificent machine, to be sure.”

Kym Sorensen takes her place in the front seat next to General Hodges and the two drive off towards the Royal Palace.

6:00 pm

Hodges and Sorensen arrive at the palace just 15 minutes later. He pulls up under the entrance vestibule, helps Sorensen out of the car, then pauses to belt on his dress sword. With the countess on his right arm, General Hodges comes up to the front entrance and is greeted by none other than Field Marshal Yvonne Davion.

Salutes are exchanged, and General Hodges says “good evening, ma’am. I didn’t expect to see you here tonight.”

“General, I and a number of high-ranking officers and government functionaries are here at the First Prince’s invitation to recognize what you have done for the Federated Suns. If you will please follow me, I’ll take you to the dining room.”

“At your convenience.”

Field Marshal Davion escorts the two through the palace and to the formal dining room, where Hanse Davion is waiting to receive them. As soon as Hodges and Sorenson enter the room, they are greeted with a standing ovation led by the First Prince.

Hanse Davion comes over, shakes hands with General Hodges and says “I’m glad to see you again, General. The raids on Helm and New Dallas were eminently successful, and this dinner is part of the recognition that is rightfully yours.”

“Thank you, your highness; the pleasure is all mine.”

“That’s quite a weapon you have there. Where did you get it?”

“Your highness, as it so happens, this weapon is a Model 1913 U.S cavalry saber; the Model 1913 happens to be that last such weapon ever issued to the U.S Army. This particular example belonged to my great grandfather Lt. General Courtney Hodges; he commanded X Corps and the 10th Army during the build-up to the invasion of Europe. In 1943, he turned over command to General George Patton and reported for reassignment. General Patton had enormous personal respect for my great grandfather, to the point where he gave him this sword. Patton carried this very weapon during the 1916 Pancho Villa Expedition and later on during the First World War, where he commanded the AEF tank school in Ourroy, France.”

“Fascinating. Now, let’s take our seats; the palace staff have laid on a good spread for tonight.”

The evening passes and a good time is had by all. Towards the end of the dinner, the First Prince taps on his champagne glass to get everyone’s attention.

“Ladies, gentlemen and fellow officers. In view of General Hodges’ outstanding service to the Federated Suns, and by my authority as First Prince, I hereby grant him the system of Bristol, to have and hold in perpetuity from this day forth. Additionally, you are also granted a finder’s fee equal to 5% of the total value of the Helm Cache.” The First Prince’s pronouncement causes all those present to break out in another standing ovation, one even more enthusiastic than before; for his part, General Hodges is momentarily stunned.

“Your highness, fellow officers, ladies and gentlemen; I am honored by the trust and confidence that has been shown to me here tonight…” As General Hodges speaks, he catches a glimpse of Kym Sorenson raising her glass to him (with a rather appraising look in her eye).

“…know that I will do my very best to prove worthy of it.”

A third round of applause breaks out; once the clapping fades away, the chamber orchestra (which, heretofore, had been playing light tunes for the entertainment of all) begins playing a series of tunes chosen by Hanse Davion to especially-appeal to General Hodges’ sense of history. The first three are ‘Boogie Woogie’, ‘In The Mood’ and ‘Moonlight Serenade’ by Glenn Miller; when the third tune starts. Hodges stands up, turns to Kym Sorensen and says “may I have this dance?”

In the know
June 5th, 3028
Royal Palace, New Avalon

As part of the final preparations for the wedding in two months’ time, Archon Katrina Steiner and Archon-Designate Melissa Steiner arrive on New Avalon for a state visit; this is the official cover story. The real reason they came is to meet with General Hodges and learn of his contributions to the present state of affairs. For reasons of security, neither of the Steiners was told beforehand who General Hodges was and how he came to be.

The meeting takes place in Hanse Davion’s private office in the Fox’ Den; aside from the First Prince and the Steiners, those present are Justin Allard, Field Marshal Yvonne Davion and Kym Sorensen (her presence is due to her increasing place in General Hodges’ affections).

The First Prince calls the meeting to order and says “Katrina, Melissa, thank you both for coming on such short notice. My apologies for not telling you the true purpose of why I asked you here; the security implications of what you are about to be told are such that you couldn’t be told until you were here. To begin with, let me introduce my newest officer, Lt. General James Hodges. General, the floor is yours.”

“Thank you, your highness. Archon, Archon-Designate, I am pleased to finally be able to meet you. What I am about to tell you may seem had to believe, but I give you my word as an officer that every word of it is true. On February 7th of this year, the New Avalon Institute of Science began a series of experiments which were aimed at cracking the secrets behind Hyperpulse Generator technology; one of these experiments malfunctioned in a rather unique way…”

Archon Katrina raises an eyebrow and says “Unique in what way?”

“Unique in that it caused my appearance; you see, I am from the past of another reality. My name is Lt General James Hodges, formerly with the United States Army. Before the transition event, my last duty station was as the commanding general of III Corps at Fort Hood, Texas. What happened with the experiment was that the unique circumstances under which it was conducted and the energies involved were such that I and my house were transported through time and space and deposited at NAIS. “

“Wait, are you saying that you’re a time traveler?”

“You are correct, Archon; more to the point, I’m from another reality entirely.”

Hanse Davion speaks up and says “Katrina, what General Hodges says is the absolute truth.” To further emphasize this, Hanse removes a certain cardboard box from his desk and slides it over. Katrina’s and Melissa’s eyes go wide as they read the title printed on the cover:

‘Battletech, A Game of Armored Combat’

General Hodges smiles and replies “thank you, your highness. Archon, Archon-Designate, from my previous viewpoint, you, the First Prince, the state of affairs in the Inner Sphere and everything else are nothing more than fictional constructs in the context of that game. I played Battletech extensively n my earlier years and, as my military career progressed, I found it useful in conducting sand table exercises. I mention this because I have everything ever written about the game in my personal library, including specific information relating to the Helm and New Dallas caches.”

The First Prince grins widely, then says “after satisfying myself that General Hodges’ information was accurate, I decided to make the attempt on both locations; this is when the Lyran Commonwealth was brought in.” Archon Katrina nods gravely by way of response.

“General Hodges, your actions have been of inestimable value to the Commonwealth and its people; you’ll find me suitably grateful.”

“Thank you, Archon. As a reward, the First Prince has seen fit to give me the Bristol System as a landhold. Additionally, he gave me a bonus of 5% of the value of the material recovered from both caches.”

“A superb idea. Hanse, with your permission, I’d like to give General Hodges the same bonus.”

“Permission granted, of course.” Upon hearing this, Kym Sorensen reaches out and squeezes Hodges by the hand.

General Hodges responds “Thank you, Archon; that was most generous of you.”

“You’re quite welcome, sir. It is we who should be grateful; your actions have done much to reverse the process of technological decay in the Inner Sphere.”

“Indeed, Archon. That the decay persists is thanks to that no-good bunch of toga-wearing assclowns in Comstar. They have actively tried to suppress technological improvements in the Inner Sphere, to the point where they have assassinated scientists and technicians whose advancements threatened their technological monopoly; I am referring to Operation Holy Shroud. By the time it ended in 2843, some 300 of the Inner Sphere’s best scientific minds had been murdered. ROM’s OpSec was good enough so that they had each of the Great Houses thinking that one of their rivals was responsible for the deaths and sabotage involved. A follow-up operation, Holy Shroud II (in 2979) was far less successful.”

Archon Katrina subconsciously clenches her left fist in anger as she says “I see why you have so little regard for Comstar. May I ask in what other capacities you are working for the Federated Suns?”

“Certainly, madam. I am an armored warfare officer and I have compared tank technology between my reality and yours; compared to what I knew, tank technology isn’t nearly so advanced as it should be. With this in mind, I have been working at NAIS to advance the state of the art in this area; I have had notable success thus far.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, I have devised a stabilization system whereby a tank can fire its weapons much more accurately; no matter how fast it or the target are moving. I have also designed and built a multi-spectral rangefinder; this device makes a weapon more accurate at short range and further extends the weapon’s range in all categories. Additionally, I and the technicians in my department at NAIS are developing new types of tank cannon; ones that can reach out and touch someone at ranges far outside those of current weaponry. Of course, these new technologies are certainly applicable to battlemechs…”

Archon-Designate Melissa joins the discussion and asks “General Hodges, how far into the future does your information extend?”

“That would be to the year 3158. Of course, as my information is acted upon, it will gradually become less-valuable as the course of history turns onto a new track. Beyond the upcoming wedding, the most important development in the Inner Sphere will be the Invasion of the Clans in 3049.”

“Who are the Clans?”

“They are the descendants of those who left with General Kerensky in the Great Exodus of 2784. The Clans see it as the duty to re-unite the Inner Sphere; under their banner, of course.”

“General Hodges, you have given the Archon and I much to consider. For this and other reason, I thank you.”

“You’re welcome, madam.” To Archon Katrina and the First Prince, General Hodges turns and asks “I would ask two things; first, after the wedding is completed, I’d like the second dance Second, I’d like all of you to accompany me as I visit certain locations in the old United States; you’ll find the historical commentary rather illuminating.”

The Archon and the First Prince briefly exchange glances before replying “granted willingly.”

“Now that this business is concluded, I’d like to extend an invitation for dinner and a movie at my place; I think the Archon and the Archon-Designate would appreciate a taste of the 21st century.”

“Accepted with pleasure, General.”

Who’s who and what’s what
August 6th, 3028
Comstar First Circuit Compound
Hilton Head Island, Terra

First Prince Hanse Davion (along with the members of his wedding party), Archon Katrina Steiner, Archon-Designate Melissa Steiner and the other house lords arrive on Terra two weeks before the wedding is scheduled to take place. Over the next week, General Hodges meets with the other three House lords and gives them the information regarding Comstar’s deception. Captain-General Janos Marik was responsive, but the attitude of Chancellor Maximillian Liao was one of studied, arrogant indifference (as if Hodges were some barbarian outsider from the Deep Periphery); the last meeting is with the Coordinator of the Draconis Combine, Takashi Kurita.

The meeting takes place in one section of the guest quarters in the Hilton Head compound, with elements of the Otomo providing security; these are commanded by Theodore Kurita, son of the Coordinator. General Hodges approaches Kurita’s desk after having surrendered the package he was carrying; after due inspection, the package was returned to him.

General Hodges addresses the Coordinator in a flawless Kansai dialect and says “a fair good day to you, Lord Kurita; I am honored that you are taking the time to see me.” Kurita replies “you are welcome. When I received a request from the First Prince that I should meet with you, I professed some curiosity as to why. I presume that you can tell me..”

“Hai, Coordinator. The First Prince has charged me with the duty of telling you of certain matters involving deception on the part of our host…”

Kurita raises an eyebrow in curiosity and says “what might those be?”

Over the next ten minutes or so, General Hodges lays out exacting details regarding Comstar’s secret stockpile of Star League-era battlemechs, plus the mothballed warships they have in the Luyten 68-28 and Ross 248 systems; a slight twitch in Kurita’s face being the only indication of the intense anger he feels.

Upon conclusion, the Coordinator responds “thank you for bringing this information to my attention. General. What does the First Prince seek to accomplish by conveying this information to me?”

“Nothing more than leveling the playing field between the Great Houses of the Inner Sphere and Comstar.”

“Indeed. Is this all?”

“No, Coordinator. With your permission, there is a presentation I wish to make; call it a token of esteem from one fighting man to another. Before I do so, I need to tell you that this meeting isn’t the first time that my family and yours have had dealings with one another.”

“How so?”

“To tell you that, I need to relay some of my family history to you. A distant ancestor of me was Lt. General Courtney Hodges; after the Second World War on Ancient Terra, my ancestor served as General Douglas MacArthur’s second-in-command during the occupation of Japan after its surrender. In that capacity, General Hodges developed a close working relationship with many figures in the Japanese Government, none more august than Emperor Hirohito, himself. His efforts were so central to the successful conclusion of the occupation that Emperor Hirohito saw fit to gift him with a katana; not just any katana, but one forged by the great swordsmith Masamune while he worked in Sagami Province during the Kamakura Period.”

The Coordinator gestures for the box to be brought forward. It is oblong in shape, made from Japanese cherrywood and with elaborately-worked bronze corner pieces; most significantly, the 16-petal Imperial Mon is carved into the lid. He opens the box, and sees that there is also a wakizashi contained inside.

“What is the story behind this second blade?”

“Coordinator, that concerns how my family and yours first met. After the Japanese surrender, Admiral Takeo Kurita (late of the Imperial Japanese Navy) and his family found themselves in reduced circumstances. My ancestor happened to encounter Admiral Kurita in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture and arranged for him to be interviewed by the Analysis Division of the U.S Strategic Bombing Survey; afterwards, General Hodges arranged for Admiral Kurita and his family to find honorable, gainful employment. The wakizashi you see here was given by the Admiral to my ancestor as a token of gratitude…”

The Coordinator draws the katana from its scabbard and admires the superb craftsmanship that went into its forging then returns it to its place. He does likewise with the wakizashi and says “General, you have my eternal gratitude for what you have done; were our nations not at odds with each other, I would make you a Knight of the Dragon for this. Even so, once I return to Luthien, your name will be entered into the scrolls held by my cousin Constance, Keeper of the House Honor.”

“Thank you, Coordinator; I am gratified that you think me worthy of such an honor.”

The interview now being concluded, General Hodges withdraws after making a short bow to show his respect. Later this same week, he receives an invitation to see Primus Julian Tiepolo. Before being escorted to the Primus’ office, General Hodges pauses to make sure that his dress blue uniform, his decorations are all in order and that his boots are properly polished. Upon arrival, he sees that, apart from the Primus, several members of the First Circuit are present (to include Myndo Waterly, Precentor Dieron and Tojo Jarlath, Precentor ROM). He braces to attention before his desk and snaps off a perfect parade-ground salute as a mark of the respect that he doesn’t feel. Then, he assumes the position of parade rest. Tiepolo says “when my staff informed me that you requested an interview, I felt curious enough to grant it.”

“Primus, thank you for taking the time to see me; you must be very busy planning the false flag attack on Sarna’s HPG station…” Just then, Tiepolo was taking a sip of tea. General Hodges’ statement is so shocking and so unexpected that he drops the cup, breaking it on his desk.

“WHAT???”

“You heard me, Sir. As surprising as this is to you, it isn’t the primary reason for my visit. My name is General James Hodges, warbound to First Prince Hanse Davion. Hear me well, that you may know the truth of who I am. Barely maintaining his self control, Tiepolo responds “speak, then.”

“I am from a world called New Columbia; it is located 3,600 light years rimward of the Federated Suns border, out past the Tortuga Dominions. Centuries ago, when the Terran Alliance was just starting out, certain elements in the United States bitterly resented how the country had been press-ganged into joining the Alliance by the expedient of threatening to cut off all of its foreign trade. These elements conceived a plan whereby aspects of the American military, political, business and scientific communities would be preserved. Accordingly, a dozen starships were acquired and loaded with the very best military, scientific and business talent that the United States had to offer (along with the most advanced military, scientific and industrial equipment available; the contents of the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the Smithsonian Institution and certain other museums were also included); the President of the United States then ordered the fleet to get lost. Before being subsumed into the Alliance, the intelligence agencies of the United States spent uncounted billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of man-hours making sure that there were no records of the fleet’s existence and departure.”

Tiepolo hisses venomously “spare me the history lesson and get to the point.”

“Very well, sir. I am here at the specific direction of the First Prince to convey certain information that he and the other House lords are now aware of. Specifically, I am referring to the Com Guards and your mothballed warship fleet. Until now, no one outside of your organization had any idea that you have fifty full regiments of Star League-era battlemechs stockpiled in various locations all across Terra. As for the warships, Comstar has 32 of them, four are hidden in the asteroid belt, while the other 28 are evenly divided between Luyten 68-28 and Ross 248; if you wish, I can provide the name and history of each and every ship, from the time that it was built by the Star League until it was acquired by Comstar. Additionally, the First Prince and the Archon are also aware of how, in May of 3027, Myndo Waterly deliberately breached the First Circuit’s policy of non-interference by leaking information to the Draconis Combine’s Internal Security Force on how Archon-Designate Melissa Steiner was stranded in the Styx system. On July 15th, Waterly was tried before the First Circuit on that charge, and how she managed to avoid getting excommunicated (and executed), I will never know…”

While listening to General Hodges’ matter-of-fact narration, Tiepolo becomes apoplectic with rage, to the point where he’s barely able to maintain the illusion of self-control. Eventually, he responds “you’re going to regret sticking your nose into the Blessed Order’s business.” A slight, businesslike smile crosses Hodges’ face as he replies “Primus, do try to imagine how singularly unimpressed I am by your threat.” A pause, then “I’m standing three feet in front of your desk; from the expression on your face, it must certainly cut you to the quick that there isn’t a damned thing you can do about me right now. I am an official member of the First Prince’s wedding party; if you were to try and do anything now or within the next couple of weeks while the wedding party is still on Terra, it would shoot your carefully crafted image of neutrality right in the head. To quote the Duke of Exeter in Shakespeare’s play Henry V, 'this is my claim, my message and my threatening'…”

Tiepolo is still so angry at General Hodges’ revelations that he doesn’t waste words in dismissing him; instead, he contemptuously waves him off with his right hand. Hodges draws himself up to his full height and says “I live on New Avalon. Step up and have a go if you think you’re hard enough” As he turns to leave, he begins to sing in a smooth, mellifluous baritone:

Let’s say goodbye with a smile dear,
Just for a while dear we must part,
Don't let this parting upset you,
I'll not forget you, sweetheart

We'll meet again, don't know where don't know when,
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day
Keep smiling through just as you always do
‘Till the blue skies chase those dark clouds far away…

Just as Hodges leaves the office, Tiepolo sinks heavily back in his chair. He raises his hands to his temples, as if to assuage the pounding in his head. The pain abates momentarily, and Tiepolo says to the assembled members of the First Circuit “that bastard interloper does have a point; nothing can be done to him while he and the others are still on Terra. Precentor ROM, I would consider it a great favor if Hodges were to be proceeded against and that some harm would come to him; see to it at the earliest possible opportunity.”

“Yes, Primus; it will be as you say.”

Oil on troubled waters
August 7th, 3028
Comstar First Circuit Compound
Hilton Head Island, Terra

The day after his sit-down with Primus Julian Tiepolo, General Hodges meets with Hanse Davion, Katrina Steiner and Melissa Steiner in order to deliver his contact report. Upon taking his seat, the First Prince asks “well General, how did it go with the Primus?”

“Very well, your highness. When I apologized him for interrupting the planning of the false-flag attack on Sarna’s HPG station, Tiepolo’s eyes blew up like they were a pair of supernovas. Subsequently, I told him that the existence of the Com Guards and their stockpile of Star League-era battlemechs was known (along with Comstar’s warships); when Tiepolo heard that, he became so angry that I thought he was going to have a stroke.”

“Indeed, do please continue.”

“Yes, sir. The icing on the cake came when I told Primus & Company that Myndo Waterly (Precentor Dieron and Tiepolo’s presumed successor) breached the First Circuit’s policy of non-interference by telling the Draconis Combine’s Internal security Force that the Archon-Designate was stranded in the Styx system; you should have seen his face, turned all kinds of interesting colors, it did. That bunch wants to kill me so bad they can taste it. Just before I left the Primus’ office, I stood in front of his desk and told him “step up and have a go if you think you’re hard enough.”

Archon Katrina speaks up and says “General Hodges, weren’t you at all concerned for your safety? Comstar doesn’t take insults like that at all lightly.”

“Archon, if those toaster-worshipping morons were to attempt anything against me while the wedding party is here on Terra, it would do them far more harm than good. However, after we leave, all bets are off.”

The First Prince nods his head and replies “how do we proceed from here?”

“Your highness, it is explained in detail in the books that I have, that Comstar will eventually find out about your raid on the Helm and New Dallas depots. In the history that was, there will be a raid on NAIS in 3029 by House Liao’s Death Commandos; only the Commandos won’t be the ones who carry out the attack. It will be a false-flag attack by Comstar; if anything, they’ll try to kill me while they go after the material that was recovered.”

A look of quiet fury crosses Hanse Davion’s face as he says “we’ll just see about that. General, when we return to New Avalon, I’ll schedule a briefing with you and the other members of my senior staff; you’ll brief them and then a proper response will be formulated.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Do you have anything else for me?”

“I do indeed, your highness. Just recently, the mercenary unit Wolf’s Dragoon’s entered the service of House Davion after leaving the employ of the Draconis Combine; let’s say that the circumstances of their parting were rather less than amenable.” A pause, then “House Davion first employed the Dragoons from 3005 through 3009. After that, they were successively employed by the Capellan Confederation, Duke Anton Marik (during the Marik Civil War), House Marik, House Steiner and the Draconis Combine in that order. They continued in the Combine’s service until the Battle of Misery in April, 3028. Due to machinations by Warlord Grieg Samsonov, the Draconis Combine accused the Dragoons of breach-of-contract and various war crimes. To make matters worse, Tetsuhara was the designated liaison officer between the Combine and the Dragoons; his successor was an absolute scumbag named Jerry Akuma (Grieg Samsonov’s right-hand man).

“Ahh, yes; a most-regrettable situation, that was.”

“You don’t know the half of it, sir. To make a long story short, Colonel Wolf defeated and captured Minobu Tetsuhara after the battle on Misery; afterwards, Tesuhara committed seppuku to atone for his disgrace. Over the course of Tetsuhara’s association with the Dragoons, he and Colonel Wolf had become good friends; it was on this basis that Tetsuhara asked Colonel Wolf to stand as his Kaishakunin in the ceremony. Historically-speaking, the role of the Kaishakunin would be to behead the one committing seppuku in order to spare him prolonged agony. In Tetsuhara’s case, all that Colonel Wolf did was to shoot him with a laser pistol after he died. What you all don’t know is that, before Tetsuhara died, he asked Colonel Wolf to return his swords to the Coordinator. Colonel Wolf is here on Terra as we speak, and he intends to pick a fight with the Combine by throwing Tetsuhara’s swords at Takashi Kurita’s feet and calling him out. To further complicate matters, Wolf’s Dragoons are from the Clans; there were sent here as an advance unit by the Clan’s ‘Warden’ faction. The Wardens are one of the two major factions in Clan society; they seek to both guide and protect the Inner Sphere until a new Star League can be formed. The other faction is the Crusaders; this bunch wants to conquer the Inner Sphere and reform the Star League by force, with them at its head.”

“That’s going to be a problem, if ever there was one.”

“Your highness, with your permission, I have a solution that I would like to undertake. “Take the Dragoons in your service and give them the world of Outreach as their home base. There are three mid-level Star League supply depots on that planet, and giving it to the Dragoons will earn you their undying loyalty. Not only this, the Dragoons will avoid whatever losses they’d suffer in fighting the Combine.”

“General Hodges, once again, you have rendered me an invaluable service. I must ask however, what makes you believe that Takashi Kurita will go along with this?”

“The Coordinator and I are on good terms because of the information you directed me to convey to him, During that interview, I gifted him with a katana that had been given to my ‘ancestor’ by Emperor Hirohito in the late 1940s; I also gave him a wakizashi from my personal collection, a weapon once owned by the Coordinator’s ancestor Admiral Kurita and given by that worthy gentleman to my ancestor.”

“Very well. You have my permission to proceed.”

“Thank you, your highness.”

August 14th, 3028

Six days before Hanse and Melissa’s wedding takes place, General Hodges meets with Colonel Wolf in the latter’s guest quarters on Hilton Head Island; also present is none other than Captain Natasha Kerensky.

“Colonel Wolf, Captain Kerensky, I’m pleased to finally be able to meet the both of you; your reputations have preceded you.”

“The pleasure’s all mine, General. When I heard about that sit-down you had with Primus Julian Tiepolo, I was all the more curious about you.”

“Then, I’ll get right to the point, sir. How’s the weather on Strana Mechty?”

The same word escapes from Colonel Wolf’s and Captain Kerensky’s throats at the same time…

“WHAT??”

“You heard me, Colonel. I know who you people are, where you came from and why you’re here. I am likewise completely familiar with your personal history, as well as that of Captain Kerensky. The Dragoons were dispatched to the Inner Sphere in 3004 by Khan Kerlin Ward in order to assess the state of the Sphere’s various military forces and to help prepare them against an invasion by the Crusader faction; I believe the whole affair was called the ‘Dragoon Compromise.”

Colonel Wolf fixes General Hodges with a glare that would freeze most other men in their tracks, then says “you have my undivided attention. Before we continue, how is it that you know so much about us? All I know about you is that you’re from some planet far out in the Deep Periphery and that Hanse Davion has shown an rather-unusual amount of trust and confidence in you…”

“Colonel, I drink and I know things. More to the point, I have certain intelligence sources that are so deep and so black that they make space itself seem brighter than the noonday sun. As to why I asked to see you today, I know all of the details of the situation between you and the Draconis Combine.”

“If as you say, you know why I’m here, you must know that I have to do it.”

“Sir, with respect, both you and the Coordinator are in the wrong about this. The break between the Dragoons and the Combine was caused by the actions of Grieg Samsonov, warlord of the Galedon Military District. His machinations (and the duplicity of his right-hand man Jerry Akuma) are what led up to the bad blood between you and Takashi Kurita.”

Wolf pounds his desk in anger and replies “Jerry Akuma; that’s a name I never expected to hear that name again. Even before Misery, I found him to be the worst kind of arrogant, self-aggrandizing prick. During the fighting around the city of Cerrant on An Ting, I was pleased to hear that Dechan Fraser (one of my mechwarriors) blew him into next week with the medium laser on his Shadow Hawk.”

“Colonel, you’re not the only one who had a case of the ass at Akuma. Subhash Indrahar (Director of the ISF) became aware of what Akuma had done and ordered his death; your man Fraser just got there first. As to why you should follow my advice, I know that you have been angling to enter the service of House Davion for some time now; you have also had your eyes on the world of Outreach as a home base (mainly because of the three Star League depots on that planet). I have made the First Prince aware of how things stand, and he has authorized me to tell you that if you forego your intended confrontation with the Coordinator and enter his service without delay, he’ll settle Outreach on you immediately.”

“What makes you think that Kurita will listen to you and what you have to say?”

“Sir, the Coordinator and I are on good terms because of the information I gave to him regarding Comstar’s stockpile of Stare League mechs and warships; I also gave him a katana that had been presented to one of my ancestors by Emperor Hirohito, as well as a wakizashi that had been gifted to my ancestor by Admiral Takeo Kurita in 1947. As for Minobu Tetsuhara’s swords, present them to the Coordinator as you intended to, but please do so in a dignified and respectful manner. Remember that anger is a poor servant and an even worse master; if the Dragoons and the Combine were to break out in open warfare against each other, you’d be looking at the loss of 80% or more of the Dragoons strength.”

A meaningful pause, then “Colonel, I have written proof of all that Samsonov and his lapdog Akuma did or wanted to do. These two folders that I have with me are copes of one another; one is for you and the other is for the Coordinator; read through the documents and you’ll see that what I propose is the most equitable course of action. I’ll be with you when you go see Kurita; I’ll give him the second folder at the same time. When he reads how Samsonov conspired to turn the Combine and the Dragoons against each other, he’ll be pleased to see things my way (as well as angered beyond reason by how Samsonov played him for a fool). Beyond this, your fate is your own….”

Colonel Wolf turns to Captain Kerensky and says “well Natasha, what do you think?”

“Sir, if General Hodges can pull this off, I’m all for it. Still, it galls me that someone outside the Dragoons (and a tank officer, besides) was able to come up with all this.”

Upon hearing this, a predatory grin crosses General Hodges’ face as he says “Madam, from that statement, I have to infer that you have no regard for tankers, Perhaps, in better circumstances, I would be able to change your mind; say, a friendly contest between your Warhammer and my tank? I promise not to beat you up too badly..”

“General, if I had a C-bill for every time someone wanted to demonstrate their so-called superiority to me, I’d be the richest woman in the Inner Sphere; you’re on. Just name the time and the place…”

Author's note; the preliminaries of the wedding are adapted from 'Warrior: Riposte' by Michael Stackpole. The narration of the wedding ceremony is from my own wedding in 2001.

The Starz Club is a bar that I used to frequent when I was in South Korea with Company C of the 2nd Engr Bn, 2nd Division between 1986 and 1987; it was famous for having a Harley-Davidson 883 'Sportster' motorcycle set into the bar and a stereo rack that covered one entire wall. As for the 'ahh, entertainment, the image of a pack of hungry sharks going after a surfer comes to mind....:openedeyewink::openedeyewink:

Muddying the Waters
August 15th, 3028
9:00 pm

On the evening of August 15th, an agent in the employ of Romano Liao attempted to assassinate Quintus Allard while he was in his suite conferring with his son Daniel. Thanks to Daniel’s quick reflexes, he was able to roll his father out of the assassin’s line of fire while drawing his own laser pistol. However, the assassin wasn’t taken out by Dan’s fire; instead, he was shot from a distance by an agent of ROM. It so happened that Tojo Jarlath (Precentor ROM) had developed intelligence that Romano Liao would make such an attempt, and that he had detailed agents to keep a close eye on Quintus Allard.

To avoid any suspicion of complicity, Jarlath had a team of ROM security agents standing by. In turn, these agents kicked open the door to Quintus Allard’s quarters on the pretext of just having come onto the scene after the shooting. Coldly furious at the attempt on his life, the elder Allard thanked the agents for their assistance and immediately reported the attack to Hanse Davion; in turn, the First Prince communicated the information to Archon Katrina Steiner. Takashi Kurita received a summary of what happened and reacted by swearing loudly “Baka!!”

Later that night, Tojo Jarlath delivers a report on what happened to Primus Julian Tiepolo and the members of Comstar’s First Circuit. After some discussion among those present, Tiepolo decides that a communications interdict against House Liao will not be in order. Instead, Precentor Sian will be detailed to present a list of ‘requests’ to the Chancellor; first among these are the materials and personnel necessary to upgrade a dozen of the ‘B’ HPG stations in the Capellan Confederation to full ‘A’ status. Second, Comstar will be allowed to recruit candidates from among the Confederation’s best and brightest citizens; this and the first request are non-negotiable. To give Maximilian Liao the illusion that he has any choice in the matter, he will be asked to ‘let’ his son Tormana join Comstar; if he declines to do so, nothing further will be said.

Outwardly, Myndo Waterly agrees with the Primus’ decisions; inwardly, however, she’s seething over his seeming inaction. To herself, she swears “Primus, unlike the word of the Blessed Blake and my anger, you aren’t immortal and you won’t rule forever. By the time I’m done with you, no one will remember that you ever existed…”

August 16th, 3028
7:00 pm

Not caring that her attempt to kill Quintus Allard very nearly brought disaster to the Capellan Confederation, Romano Liao confers with her husband Tsen Shang and decides upon another course of action. The idea is to bring discredit upon First Prince Hanse Davion by driving a wedge between him and General Hodges; her intent is to invite Hodges to her quarters for a visit and offer herself to him. If he accepts the opportunity and acts upon it, the intent is to expose him publically for what he has done.

At 7:00 pm, Tsen Shang knocks on the door to General Hodges’ quarters and says “My lady Romano Liao sent me here to extend you an invitation to come and see her on a matter of some importance. Shall I convey your acceptance?”

“Very well, Mr. Shang. Tell your lady that I’ll be there in 15 minutes.”

Shang turns and leaves; when the door closes, Kym Sorenson comes up and says “what was all that about, James?”

“Well, unless I’m very much mistaken, I think that Romano Liao wants to play the old ‘honey trap’ game by seducing me and threatening to expose said liason. I’m minded to play her little game; when she thinks she’s got me, I’ll call that stupid bitch out on the carpet.”

“Alright, dearest. Do please be careful; I wouldn’t put it past her or someone else to do something unexpected…”

A quarter of an hour later, General Hodges shows up at Romano Liao’s bungalow. Interestingly enough, neither Tsen Shang or any of her guards are present; just before knocking on the door, he activates the small recording device in one of his coat pockets.

The door opens to reveal Romano Liao standing there in a long flowing gown of sheer green silk; the gown has an impossibly-deep neckline and seems to be held up by nothing more than the intent of its wearer.

“Good evening, Lady Romano. Your husband brought word that you wanted to see me on some issue of importance…”

“Yes, General. Do please come in and make yourself comfortable…”

Hodges follows, while silently thinking to himself “I haven’t seen such a blatant come-on since the last time I was at the Starz Club in Tongduchon, South Korea”. As he enters the room, he sees that the lights are turned down low, with a fire in the fireplace, several candles at various places and soft music playing from overhead. Romano slinks over to a nearby table, pours out two glasses of champagne and returns to give one to General Hodges.

Romano raises her glass and says “to your very good health, sir.” Hodges returns the toast, takes a sip and replies “that’s a very nice little nothing you’re almost wearing; proof positive that the law of gravity isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. Why don’t you cut to the chase and tell me what’s really on your mind?”

“Why General, don’t you find me attractive? You’re unmarried, and surely men of your lofty rank have ‘needs’ that I could help fulfill…”

Hodges drains his glass, throws it to the floor and crushes it under his boot. His gaze hardens like granite and his voice begins to rumble like boulders grinding together.

“Lady (and I use the term very loosely), I don’t know what you and Uncle Maxie have planned, but I’m not interested. You’re married, and shouldn’t behave like a woman whose physical affections are subject to commercial negotiation. Someone like you would think nothing of stealing the coins of a dead man's eyes or the penny from under his tongue...”

“WHAT??”

“You heard me right, Romano. Tell Mad Max I said “better luck next time.”

Romano angrily hisses like a cornered cat and throws the rest of her drink in General Hodges’ face. She draws her hand back to slap him, only to have it effortlessly blocked by Hodges’ right hand.

“If you had any dignity (which I very much doubt), I’d tell you not to do something that we’ll both regret.”

Hissing and spitting in fury. Romano says “Hodges, hear me well when I say that you’ll regret this insult to me.” He dismisses her with a contemptuous wave of the hand and says “I really don’t care; if it were up to me, I’d stomp on you so ****** hard that you’d ooze out from under my boots.” Without further adieu, Hodges turns on his heels and leaves; his first stop is at his own quarters to tell Kym Sorenson what transpired. Then, it’s off to the First Prince’s quarters to deliver a personal contact report.

The next several minutes is spent in relating what happened to Hanse Davion, along with playing the recording from the device in General Hodges’ pocket. After hearing Hodges’ report, the First Prince laughs so hard that it takes a few seconds for him to recover his composure.

“I can’t believe that you called Romano Liao a whore; that’s just priceless.”

“I certainly did, your highness; called her a few other choice names, too. I wasn’t so offended so much by Miss Lot Lizard’s attempt at seduction as I was by the truly amateurish way she carried it out. When I left, she was so angry that she could chew nails and spit tacks; as far as what Mad Max thinks about what happened. I really don’t care.”

“Mad Max?? I’ll have to remember that one…”

The Calm before the Storm
August 19th, 3028
6:00 pm

On the evening before the wedding is to take place, General Hodges prevails upon the good will held by Takashi Kurita towards him and requests a second meeting; curious as to what this portends, the Coordinator grants the request.

Hodges enters the Coordinator’s quarters, makes a short bow of the head and says ‘Konban-wa, Kurita-sama. Thank you for agreeing to see me again on such short notice.”

“Konban-wa, Hodges-san. When you asked to see me tonight, I must confess to no little amount of curiosity about the reason.”

“Hai, Kurita-sama. If you will allow me to do so, I will get right to the point…” A nod in the affirmative from the Coordinator, then General Hodges continues.

“Coordinator, the very recent difficulties between the Draconis Combine and the mercenary outfit called ‘Wolf’s Dragoon’ has not escaped my notice. Both your honorable self and Colonel Wolf believe that the other party is in the wrong in this situation; with respect, I am here to tell you that both sides are wrong. Yes, Wolf’s Dragoons did leave your service under less-than-ideal circumstances. Kurita-sama, the break was neither caused by your honorable self or by Colonel Wolf. Instead, the friction which broke out between the Draconis Combine and Colonel Wolf’s outfit was caused by the machinations of Grieg Samsonov, Warlord of the Galedon Military District; equally complicit in Samsonov’s malfeasance was his underling, Jerry Akuma. Recently Subhash Inrdrahar issued a termination order against Akuma (with your permission). However, one of Colonel Wolf’s mechwarriors got to Akuma first; he was killed in the fighting on An Ting. Akuma’s death was authorized because both you and Director Indrahar were cognizant of his misdeeds.”

“You have the right of it, Hodges-san. I was unaware of Warlord Samsonov’s responsibility in this matter; I presume that you have documentation of this?”

“Hai, Kurita-sama; I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t.”

General Hodges hands over the duplicate folder of documents for the Coordinator’s perusal; the more that Takashi Kurita reads, the angrier he gets.”

“Hodges-san, once again, I am in your debt. When I return to Luthien, this information will be submitted to the ISF for review; I don’t doubt that they will confirm it in all details. I will therefore deal with Samsonov in a manner befitting that traitorous yawamushi....”

“I believe you will, Kurita-sama. In a related matter, Colonel Wolf himself is standing by to see you on a matter of the utmost personal importance.”

“Why should I agree to see him, Hodges-san?”

“Kurita-sama, Colonel Wolf wishes to return Minobu Tetsuhara’s swords to you personally. You see, when Samosnov ordered certain DCMS units to engage and destroy Wolf’s Dragoons, he and his own forces stood by and hid behind the moon of Misery; their orders were to enter battle if Tetsuhara-san managed to draw out the Dragoons. However, as the Scottish poet Robert Burns once said many centuries ago, ‘The best laid schemes o' mice an' men / Gang aft a-gley.’ By this, I mean that Colonel Wolf and his unit saw off the attack. In the resulting action, Tetsuhara-san was captured. To atone for his disgrace, he decided to commit seppuku; as he and Colonel Wolf were very good friends before the late unpleasantness, Tetsuhara-san asked Colonel Wolf to stand as his Kaishakunin; before Tetsuhara-san carried out his atonement, he asked Colonel Wolf to personally deliver his swords to you.”

Still somewhat conflicted over General Hodges’ revelations, Kurita says nothing for the next several moments as he sits in thought. Eventually, he responds “Hodges-san, you have behaved honorably and I see no reason to doubt your word in this matter.” The Coordinator turns to one of his aides and says “bring Colonel Wolf here immediately”

The man instantly responds “Hai, Kurita-sama” and bows his way out of the room. A few minutes later, Colonel Wolf enters; he is carrying an oblong bundle wrapped in the finest white silk. Wolf marches up to the Coordinator’s desk, makes a short, respectful bow and presents the swords to him (after touching the bundle to his forehead as a sign of respect).

“Kurita-sama, I herewith return these swords to you; I swore to Tetsuhara-san that I would do so.”

“Colonel Wolf, you have shown the utmost honor in so doing; after all, ‘duty is as heavy as a mountain and death is as light as a feather’; I am pleased that we did not come into conflict with each other, and I will issue orders to the effect that neither the DCMS, the ISF, the Genyosha or any other agency will take any further action against either you or the Dragoons; I will likewise countermand my order against mercenaries. This matter is now closed”

“Hai, Kurita-sama”

Colonel Wolf makes a formal bow and withdraws from the room. The Coordinator looks to General Hodges and says “Hodges-san, once again you have done my house an invaluable service. When we last met, I said that, were our nations not in conflict with one another, I would make you a Knight of the Dragon. For what you have done this day, I will ask the First Prince for permission to bestow that honor upon you; you are a citizen of the Federated Suns and so, for that reason, the title will be honorary. However, should you ever find yourself within the Draconis Combine for any reason, you will be treated as such (with the rights, honors and privileges appertaining thereto).”

“Hai, Coordinator. However we meet again, I am honored that you think me worth of such distinction.”

8:00 pm

General Hodges makes a detailed report to the First Prince on what transpired between he and the Coordinator. Upon completion, Hans Davion responds “General Hodges, I never actually thought that Takashi Kurita would actually go through with what you said; my read of his character was that, to admit that mistakes were made would have led to a loss of face. Well-done, I say..”

Just then, Archon Katrina and Archon-designate Melissa enter the room. Hanse says, “Archon, my dear Melissa, General Hodges has informed me that a potentially-vexatious variable has been removed from the equation. You are already aware of the unpleasantness that passed between Wolf’s Dragoons and the Draconis Combine; a short time ago, General Hodges came to me with information that the conflict between the Combine and the Dragoons came about at the instigation of Grieg Samsonov, Warlord of the Galedon Military District. He requested permission to mediate the dispute between Colonel Wolf and the Coordinator, and was eminently successful.”

Melissa applauds, while Archon Katrina says “well-done, General.” She looks to the First Price and says “Hanse, I am pleased to hear about what went on. However, that isn’t why I’m here. I want to recognize General Hodges for the invaluable service he rendered the Lyran Commonwealth in facilitating the retrieval of the caches on Helm and New Dallas. With your permission, I would like to award him the Commonwealth Medal of Honor. Attendant to this award, General Hodges will also be inducted into the Knights of Donegal.”

The First Prince smiles widely and says “General, that distinction is well-deserved; what say you to the Archon’s intent?”

“I will be pleased and honored to accept, your highness.”

Archon Katrina nods her head by way of response; she bends close to Melissa and engages in a few brief moments of hushed conversion before standing up.

“General Hodges, I have a personal request to make of you; one that doesn’t bear on any of your military responsibilities. In the ceremony which will take place tomorrow, I have no one to give away the hand of my daughter Melissa in marriage. You see, that role would have been performed by my husband Arthur Luvon. However, he passed away when Melissa was only a baby; I now ask that you stand in his stead and walk Melissa down the aisle…”

General Hodges is quite taken by surprise at the Archon’s request, though he’s normally quite unflappable. When he recovers his composure, Hodges replies “Archon, I am humbled that you would ask me to carry out such a personal duty. Know that I will perform it in a manner befitting the honor and the dignity of the ceremony.”

The Storm Breaks
August 20th, 3028
3:00 pm

At long last, the day for which Hanse Davion and Katrina Steiner have labored years has come to pass; the First Prince and Archon-designate Melissa Steiner are to be married. Befitting the occasion, the wedding ceremony will take place in the magnificent Cathedral-Basilica of St. John The Baptist in downtown Savannah. The first church of the name on this site was constructed between 1811 and 1839 and, over the years, the cathedral burned down and was reconstructed several times. In the aftermath of the Amaris Coup in December of 2766, the cathedral was razed during the fighting taking place in and around Savannah; it was only after Amaris was overthrown that it was rebuilt. This time, the materials used came from other churches destroyed by the Usurper's minions. Notable features of the basilica are its great bronze doors (from the Papal Basilica of St. John Lateran and before that, the ancient Curia Julia) and the Papal altar (from the Basilica of St. Peter). The ceiling itself is painted as an exact copy of the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel in Rome which (along with St. Peter’s Basilica, the Basilica of St. John Lateran and the other churches in the city) were destroyed or heavily-damaged by the infamous ‘Greenhaven Gestapo’ mercenary unit when it sacked the Vatican in 2770.

As with the other guests, General Hodges and Kym Sorensen rise early in the morning in order to get ready for the ceremony. Hodges lays out his uniform after pressing it and attaches his decorations; following this, he shines his boots to his own exacting specifications. While this is going on, Kym Sorensen does the same with her own dress.

Each of them eyes the other to make sure their outfits are just so, then Sorensen says “James, how do I look?” A beaming smile is Hodges’ reply as he says “you’re as pretty as a picture, my dear.”

A slight chuckle escapes Kym’s mouth, then “flattery will get you everywhere. Now, the driver should be here in about 15 minutes to take me to the cathedral. I’m one of the Archon-designate’s bridesmaids, so I’ll need to be with her; you’re one of the First Prince’s groomsmen, so you’ll be travelling with him.” General Hodges replies “Lancer-Six Actual copies “

“Lancer-Six Actual? What does that mean?”

“Oh, that was my call sign a long time ago in a place far, far away…”

A few minutes later, there is a knock on the door. Hodges open it and sees an earnest young officer in the uniform of the Davion Guards.

“Yes?”

“Sir, Minister Allard sends his compliments and says that he and the other members of the groom’s party are waiting for you at the First Prince’s bungalow.”

“Thank you, lieutenant. Give Minister Allard my regards and tell him that I’ll be there directly.”

“Yes, sir.”

The officer turns and leaves, then General Hodges looks to Kym Sorensen and says “duty calls, my dear; I’ll see you at the church.”

“Alright, darling.”

The two part with a squeeze of the hand and a quick peck on the cheek; Hodges pauses briefly to belt on his saber and is out the door.

A short time later, General Hodges meets with the First Prince at his bungalow, along with the other members of his wedding party. Hanse Davion is standing before a mirror making final adjustments to his tuxedo as Hodges comes in.

“Good morning, your highness. I see that you’re getting ready for the big day.”

“Indeed I am, General.”

Just then, Morgan Hasek-Davion (Hanse Davion’s best man) speaks up and says “your highness, it’s time to go.”

The First Prince and his groomsmen are driven to the cathedral; before they arrive, the wedding ushers (men and women from the Davion Heavy Guards) are escorting the guests to their seats in order of precedence. Aside from the principals, the guest list is composed of everybody who’s anybody in the Inner Sphere; there are even delegations from major periphery states like the Marian Hegemony and the Magistracy of Canopus. The major names are as follows:

Federated Suns: First Prince Hanse Davion, Marie Davion, Michael Hasek-Davion, Morgan Hasek-Davion, Kym Sorenson, Quintus Allard, Tamara Kearny Allard, Riva Allard, Felicity Baroness de Gambier, Ardan Sortek, Cardinal Francis Flynn, Anton Vitios.

Lyran Commonwealth: Archon Katrina Steiner, Archon-Designate Melissa Steiner, Jeana Clay, Misha Auburn, Cardinal John Maraschal

Capellan Confederation: Chancellor Maximillian Liao, Elizabeth Jordan Liao, Candace Liao, Justin Allard, Romano Liao, Tsen Shang, Pavel Ridzik, Alexi Malenkov

Draconis Combbine: Coordinator Takashi Kuita, Jasmine Kurita, Yorinaga Kurita, Akira Brahe

Free Worlds League: Captain-General Janos Marik, Brownwen Rafsani, Janek Hansen

Marian Hegemony: Imperator Marius O’Reilly

Magistracy of Canopus: Magestrix Kyalla Centrella

ComStar: Primus Julian Tiepolo, Ulthar Everston, Myndo Waterly, Villius Tejh

Mercenary: Colonel Jamie Wolf, Morgan Kell, Daniel Allard, Scott Bradley

As the wedding represents not just the union of two people, but the joining of two of the Inner Sphere’s Great Houses, the ceremony will be concelebrated by Francis Cardinal Flynn from the Archdiocese of New Avalon and John Cardinal Maraschal from the Archdiocese of Tharkad.

While the guests are being seated, General Hodges waits along with the Archon-Designate in a side vestibule; just before the wedding march begins, Hodges thinks back to the time when he walked his own daughter down the isle.

As the cathedral’s great organ begins to play, all eyes present are drawn to the central aisle where Melissa Steiner begins to walk; General Hodges supports Melissa’s right hand on his left arm, and the pace is that of a slow march. First Prince Hanse Davion is standing in front of the high altar, waiting for his bride-to-be.

Melissa Steiner joins her soon-to-be husband, with General Hodges standing in the position of Parade rest off to the left. At a signal from Cardinal Flynn, the assembled guests take their seats. Then, he raises his hands in blessing and begins to speak.

“Who gives this woman to be wedded to this man?”

General Hodges snaps to attention, responds “I do” and moves Melissa’s veil aside so that Hanse can gaze upon her face.

Cardinal Flynn nods and says “Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today in the presence of Almighty God and this assembled company to bear witness to the union of two people in the bonds of Holy Matrimony. We hold marriage up as a sacred union between two people who are committed to loving one another and spending the rest of their lives together, faithful to each other, and to their journey together. But we also know as a society that marriage is a serious institution. It requires deep commitment, faith and trust in your spouse, and a lot of patience to make it work. In the time I’ve known Hanse and Melissa and in the conversations we’ve had discussing this ceremony, I’ve seen those things. I’ve seen their commitment to one another, their faith and trust, and their patience - and above it all, I’ve seen the love that these two wonderful people have for each other. Now in the book of 1st Corinthians, the Apostle Paul provides us with a beautiful description of the kind of love that a marriage needs. He writes, “Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

To the couple, Cardinal Flynn says “Hanse and Melissa, I want to urge you to hold to that vision of your love for one another, because even though all of us here are behind you and rooting for you, life throws us challenges, and in the midst of those challenges, it’s the kind of love St. Paul was describing that is going to get you through it. Knowing this, it’s time to declare yourselves to one another.” Cardinal Maraschal begins to read as follows:

“Hanse, do you take Melissa to be your lawfully wedded wife from this day forward, to have and to hold, in good times and bad, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health; will you love, honor, and cherish her for as long as you both shall live?”

“I do.”

“Melissa, do you take Hanse to be your lawfully wedded husband from this day forward, to have and to hold, in good times and bad, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health; will you love, honor, and cherish him for as long as you both shall live?”

“I do”.

“It is now time to say your vows to each other.

“Hanse, repeat after me. With this ring, I thee wed. I promise to love, honor and cherish you, in good times and bad, for richer and for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part”.

Hanse places the ring on Melissa’s finger, then Cardinal Maraschal says “Melissa, repeat after me. With this ring, I thee wed. I promise to love, honor and cherish you, in good times and bad, for richer and for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part”. Melissa places the ring on Hanse’s finger and Cardinal Flynn speaks up.

“Hanse, Melissa, having proclaimed your love for, and commitment to one another in the sight of Almighty God and these witnesses, it is my pleasure to pronounce you, by the authority vested in me by Almighty God, husband and wife. Hanse Davion, you may now kiss the bride”

Cardinal Maraschal speaks last and says “ladies and gentlemen, it is with honor that I now introduce to you their royal highnesses Prince Hanse Davion and Princess Melissa Steiner-Davion. The couple will now proceed out of the cathedral; afterwards, they have asked that you join them for a reception at the main conference hall on Hilton Head Island. Thank you for joining us today and God bless you all.”

Denouement
August 20th, 3028
Main Conference Hall, Hilton Head Island
5:00 pm

Due to the size of the wedding party, it is some little time before everyone at the cathedral is transported to the conference hall on Hilton Head Island. Among the first to depart are the First Prince, his new bride and Archon Katrina; following behind in other limousines are General Hodges, Hanse Davion’s other groomsmen and Melissa's bridesmaids. Next are the House lords and their attendants.

The new couple arrives at 5:00 pm and forms a receiving line along with the groomsmen and bridesmaids. All other guests in attendance are personally greeted before they take their seats. Next, the other guests are seated according to precedence; with their distance from the central table being an indication of their status. Lastly, the wedding party takes their seats.

Light music is being played in the background while initial refreshments are being served; once Quintus Allard’s glass is full, he raises it in salute to the First Prince and accompanies this with a nod of his head. Hanse Davion returns the gesture n likewise manner, knowing that great matters are taking place elsewhere in the Inner Sphere at this very moment.

Hanse Davion and Melissa Steiner-Davion are seated at the center of the table, with Archon Katrina immediately to the First Prince’s left; as a mark of General Hodges’ own status he’s seated to the Archon’s left. While the other guests circulate around the room and indulge in informal ‘business’, Hodges leans to his right and says in a quiet voice “Archon, your highness, once we are on the return trip, there are matter of great importance that have to be discussed.”

The First Prince replies with a questioning glance, to which General Hodges responds by tapping his right ear and surreptitiously pointing to the ceiling (thus indicating the possibility that all discussions in the hall are being listened to by their hosts.

A short time later, the Master of Ceremonies enters the room and strikes his staff three times on the floor to gain the attention of one and all. He announces loudly “My lords, ladies and gentlemen, Pray take your seats for the serving of the banquet.” While this is going on, a separate table is brought in and place before the central table to display the wedding cake; next to this is a table for the wedding gifts. Very soon thereafter, the wait staff (all of whom are Constar acolytes) begin to carry in covered dishes to serve the guests; by tradition, the wedding party is served first. Next, the guests are served in order of precedence.

One wedding tradition that hasn’t gone by the wayside over the centuries is the custom of getting the bride and groom to exchange kisses by the guests tapping on the rims of their wineglasses; General Hodges is the first to begin and soon, the entire hall is ringing; Hanse and Melissa enthusiastically indulge their guests (accompanied by much applause and more than a few cheers). From the central table, General Hodges raises his glass to Takashi Kurita as a mark of respect, then follows this up with malignant glares at Romano Liao and then Myndo Waterly; Romano’s return glance is nothing less than withering, while the expression on Myndo Waterly’s face is one of studied indifference (inwardly, however, she’s absolutely seething with rage directed towards General Hodges). Just then, a senior acolyte comes over to Waterly’s table, leans over, speaks a few quiet words and is then dismissed with a wave of her hand. Taking note of this, Hanse Davion sends one of his aides to enquire what happened.

Toasts (some of which are genuine) are now exchanged between the new couple and their guests. Following this, the new couple takes to the floor for their first dance together. Next, as the guests begin to move out on the floor for their own dances, Hanse and Melissa now dance with other members of their wedding party; the first of these is General Hodges, who comes up, stands in front of Melissa’s seat and says “may I have this dance, my lady?” The First Prince nods his consent, then General Hodges and the Archon-Designate move out onto the floor; next are Hanse Davion and Katrina Steiner (who seize the opportunity to have a quiet word while they are dancing together.

“Well Katrina, we’ve done it. All of our plans have brought us to this moment, and it is my sure and certain hope that we are successful.”

“I have no doubt of that, Hanse. You genuinely love and care for Melissa, and she reciprocates the affection for you. Right now, Comstar’s hierarchy is most likely furious that they were neither able to anticipate what we did; nor, to prevent it. They came close with the Silver Eagle Incident; this is an insult that I’ll never forgive or forget .”

“You and I are of like mind on this, Katrina. You may rest assured that Comstar will come to know my vengeance…”

While dancing with the Archon-Designate, General Hodges comments “you’re a natural at this, your highness; my compliments to your dance instructors.”

“Thank you, General, that was very kind of you to say so.”

Once Hodges’ dance with Melissa is over, he thanks her for the courtesy and heads off across the floor to find Kym Sorenson for their own dance together. While so occupied, Sorenson comments “Jim, if looks could kill, Romano Liao would have you dead in the most imaginative manner possible.” A soft chuckle escapes from General Hodges’ mouth as he comments sotto voce “my dear, I’m not done twisting Romano’s tail just yet. When we’re done here, I’m going . to ask Romano Liao to dance with me; that is, if you approve.”

A questioning look occupies Kym’s face as she replies “You’ve got something up your sleeve, don’t you?”

“Of course I do, my dear. Miss Lot Lizard was quite annoyed that I didn’t fall prey to what she thought were her feminine wiles; figuratively-speaking, I want to stick my thumb in her eye some more.”

“Why not? I am curious, however. What is a lot lizard? Some species of reptile life?”

“Hardly that. On old Terra in the United States, a great deal of freight was carried by men who drove long-distance trucks for a living. Regulations of the time were such that these truckers had to stop every so often for rest periods. Facilities called truck stops were set up so that the truckers could rest, eat and refuel their rigs. One of the several consequences of this business was prostitutes who carried on their ‘trade’ at truck stops; the areas where trucks were parked are called lots and the prostitutes who worked there were referred to as ‘Lot Lizards’.”

“You mean to say that you actually called Romano Liao a whore? She’s not the kind of person who takes an insult like that lying down, you know…”

“I called her a few other less-complimentary names, too; if she had behaved like a married woman, I would have given her the courtesy of being treated like one.”

“Do be careful. Jim.”

“I always am, my dear; it’s one of the several reasons why I am still alive

General Hodges walks across the floor, with his boots thumping against the smoothly-polished wood. He comes upon Roman Liao and Tsen Shang dancing together, and looms over the pair like a Titan from ancient Greek mythology. A tap on the shoulder to Tsen Shang and Hodges says “I bed your pardon, Mr. Shang; do you mind if I cut in?” Tsen Shang looks to Romano for permission, and she nods in the affirmative. General Hodges dismisses him with a curt wave of the hand, as if to say ‘away from me, lackey…”

To Romano, General Hodges says “good afternoon, my dear hetaira. I just wanted to let you know that I bear you no ill will for what passed between us previously…” ; Hodges’ voice is smooth and honey-sweet, yet dripping with hidden currents of both sarcasm and disrespect.

Oblivious to how’s she’s being played like a musical instrument, Romano responds “why my dear General, whatever gave you the impression that I was angry with you?”

“Indeed, madam. Shall we dance?”

“By the way, what was that word you used when you said hello to me? I don’t believe that I have ever heard it before…”

“Do please forgive me for being remiss. Hetaira** is a classical Greek word referring to a woman in your position.”

“Ancient Greece, you say? How very civilized of you to say so; I’ll just have to look it up… Now, shall we dance?”

General Hodges’ and Romano Liao’s arms go about each other’s shoulders as the band begins to play a tune that he had previously suggested (Moonlight Serenade, by Glenn Miller). While the dance goes on. Hodges’ bends his head close to Romano’s ear and says “I’ve heard that you boast some skill with the violin; I can play that instrument too, so what say we have a friendly little contest, you against me? I suggest you go first and play three tunes of your own choice, while I will follow your play with three tunes of my own. Let the witnesses gathered here in the hall be the judge of who’s the victor…” A small (but inwardly malignant) grin crosses Romano’s face as she says “I’ll be delighted to accept your challenge, General.” Inside her mind however, she’s thinking ‘I’ve got you now, you arrogant bastard’

Elsewhere on the floor, other couples are dancing; General Hodges and Romano Liao finish their dance together, then she announces to all those present "the good general and I have agreed to a contest of musical skill; you will be the judges of who's performance was superior. By mutual agreement, we will each play three pieces on the violin and I will go first."

Romano plays her three pieces and is greeted with polite applause at the end of her performance. General Hodges calls for his own violin and takes the floor; before he plays, he announces "my lords, ladies and gentlemen, my first two selections are from 21st-century popular Terran culture." What follows is follows is a virtuoso performance, worthy of the finest concert halls in the Inner Sphere; the first two pieces are

and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzQahpxucKk

As these two pieces are completed, the applause that General Hodges receives is nothing less than thunderous. Before Hodges plays his third piece, he says "I dedicate the following composition to my worthy opponent." He pushes a chair to the middle of the floor, takes a seat and begins to both sing and play; keeping time all the while by tapping his steel-toed combat boots on the floor.

'The devil went down to Georgia
she was lookin' for a soul to steal
she was in a bind
'Cause she was way behind
And she was willin' to make a deal

She came upon this young man
Sawin' on a fiddle and playin' it hot
And the devil jumped
Up on a hickory stump
And said boy let me tell you what

I guess you didn't know it
but I'm a fiddle player too
And if you care to take a dare I'll make a bet with you

Now you play a pretty good fiddle, boy
But give the devil her due
I'll bet a fiddle of gold
Against your soul
as to think I'm better than you

The boy said my name's Jimmy
And it might be a sin
But I'll take your bet
And you're gonna regret
'Cause I'm the best there's ever been

Jimmy rosin up your bow and play your fiddle hard
Cause hell's broke loose in Georgia and the devil deals the cards
And if you win you get this shiny fiddle made of gold
But if you lose the devil gets your soul.

The devil opened up her case
And she said I'll start this show
And fire flew from her fingertips
As she rosined up her bow
Then she pulled the bow across the strings
And it made a evil hiss
And a band of demons joined in
And it sounded something like this

[Instrumental]

When the devil finished
Jimmy said well you're pretty good old girl
Just sit down in that chair right there
And let me take you for a whirl

He played Fire on the Mountain
Run boys, run
The devil's in the House of the Rising Sun
Chicken in a bread pan picken' out dough
Granny does your dog bite
No child, no

[Instrumental]

The devil bowed her head
Because she knew that she'd been beat
And she laid that golden fiddle
On the ground at Jimmy's feet

Jimmy said, Devil just come on back
If you ever wanna try again
I done told you once you old dog
I'm the best there's ever been

And he played Fire on the Mountain
Run boys, run
The devil's in the House of the Rising Sun
Chicken in a bread pan picken' out dough
Granny does your dog bite
No child, no'*

General Hodges finishes his performance with a flourish on his violin and is greeted with cheers and applause that are even more enthusiastic than before. From the expression of pure hatred on Romano Liao's face, it is clear to her that, instead of crushing and humiliating Hodges in this musical duel, it was she that was utterly defeated. As she leaves the floor, she casts a glance at General Hodges that, if it were the beam from a PPC, he would have been vaporized.

Now that the dances and other entertainment are complete, it is time for the wedding gifts to be presented, Takashi Kurita previously requested the honor of being the first to present his gifts, and so he does. For Hanse Davion, he has a set of O-Yoroi armor, a matched daisho (katana & wakizashi) and a daikyu bow with a matching quiver that holds 36 arrows. For Melissa, there are a pair of kinonos and a Japanese tea set; the Coordinator’s gifts are acknowledged and received, then it is General Hodges’ turn.

“Your highness, Archon-Designate, please accept these gifts from me as a token of my esteem. Your highness, for you personally, I have a cased pair of ivory-stocked dueling pistols from my own collection. They were made by the noted English gunmaker Durs Egg and used to settle affairs of honor between gentlemen on old Earth. You see, the practice of gentlemen wearing swords as a required element of dress gradually fell out of favor and was replaced by the custom of resorting to pistol duels whenever they felt that their honor had been slighted.”

General Hodges continues with “Archon-Designate, for you, I have a table service consisting of 12 place settings of 18th-century British porcelain and 12 place settings of table silver made by the colonial American silversmith Paul Revere. For you and the First Prince as a couple, I present a cased pair of Holland & Holland ‘Royal Deluxe’ 12-bore shotguns. Both guns have 2 ¾” chambers and are idea for skeet & trapshooting (along with hunting waterfowl). Like the pistols, the dinnerware and the shotguns are from my personal collection.”

The sheer magnificence of these gifts causes much discussion to run among the other guests; in due course, gifts from other guests are presented. Now it is time for Hanse and Melissa to make their presentations to each other.

With her own hand, Melissa cuts a slice of the wedding cake and presents it to her husband, saying “my love, in honor of our marriage, I give to you a full regiment of battlemechs, along with the means to support it in perpetuity. Hanse presents Melissa with a slice of cake on a silver dish and says “My love, along with this tasty morsel, I give you the Capellan Confederation.”

This statement doesn’t cause much of an uproar among the other guests, as no one there really expects that the First Prince is being serious; elsewhere, events are transpiring; events that prove that Hanse Davion has never been more serious in his life. All across the Davion-Liao border, units of the AFFS have begun Operation RAT; dozens of planets were struck with near-simultaneous attacks, thus catching Liao forces completely off-guard. The proximate causes of this conflict are Hanse Davion’s desire to seize as much as possible of the Capellan Confederation’s industrial infrastructure; thus crippling House Liao’s ability to make war against him. Also, the First Prince has never forgotten Chancellor Maximilian Liao’s attempt to take control of the Federated Suns by replacing him with a body double in 3025; which plot being foiled by the actions of Ardan Sortek. The AFFS were able to exploit a weakness in House Liao’s force structure which had the CCAF lightly-garrison border worlds while having a strategic reserve that could respond to local conditions as needed. By using his traitorous half-stepbrother Duke Michael Hasek-Davion to feed misinformation to the Capellans, Hanse Davion was able to lure the CCAF into mis-deploying their assets and so, was able to catch them napping. In many locations, the AFFS outnumbered the CCAF defenders by margins of three or four-to-one.

On the intelligence front, the First Prince scored a pair of critically-important coups when Justin Xiang Allard (son of MIIO Director Quintus Allard) was infiltrated into the Capellan Maskirovka as a double-agent. Additionally, Alex Mallory joined the organization as a MIIO deep-cover agent. When the war broke out, Xiang and Mallory were, respectively, the #2 and #3 men in that agency (thus providing unparalleled access to Capellan intelligence assets, sources and information).

On the Commonwealth-Combine front, the First Prince was able to persuade Archon Katrina to join the action by attacking House Kurita in Operation: Götterdämmerung. Here, House Kurita was much-better organized than House Liao and so, Kuritan resistance was stronger. The objective of Operation: Götterdämmerung was not so much to seize territory from the Draconis Combine as it was intended to tie down DCMS regiments that could have been sent to help the Capellan Confederation/

The AFFS and the LCAF had a critical advantage over their opponents, in that selected units had been refitted with items of General Hodges’ new technology and material from the Helm Cache; for the AFFS, the units are the Davion Brigade of Guards and for the LCAF, they are the 1st & 2nd Royal Guards and the 10th Lyran Guards. The specific items are Star League neurohelmets, multi-spectral rangefinders, stabilization systems, improved myomer fibers, combat computers, improved cooling jackets, accurate weapons and caseless-electrothermal autocannons.

In the meantime back on New Avalon, Field Marshal Yvonne Davion realized that, with the coming of the war, it was very possible for New Avalon itself to come under attack. In such a situation, one of the objectives for any enemy attack would be the destruction of the New Avalon Institute of Science. Therefore, she exercised her authority as Prince’s Champion to raise Dr. B. Banzai’s unit (the Hong Kong Cavaliers) to the status of a full regiment and order that it be refitted with battlemechs from House Davion’s share of the Helm Cache; the specific models are as follows:

18 WHM-7A2 Warhammer
36 MAD-2R2 Marauder
18 BLR-2G Battlemaster
18 Marauder-III

These battlemechs will have the same refits as the machines assigned to the Hong Kong Cavaliers.

The purpose of the Cavaliers is to defend NAIS from attack, and also to reinforce New Avalon’s planetary garrison where possible. Additionally, four Battlemasters from the Helm Cache were customized for the use of the First Prince and the three members of his command lance.

Aiming for the Future
August 21st, 3028
Comstar guest quarters, Hilton Head Island
9:00 am

After the First Prince’s revelation last night, to say that House Liao, House Marik and House Kurita were buzzing like a kicked-over beehive would be a decided understatement. Once the reception banquet was over, all three houses left Terra with as much dispatch as possible. Last to leave are the First Prince, his new wife, Archon Katrina and their respective staff officers. While the preparations to leave are underway, the First Prince says “General Hodges, you earlier spoke of your desire to take us on a ‘staff ride’ as you called it; to visit various locations of historical interest located in the former territory of the United States. Given that Operation RAT is underway, I don’t think that would be a good idea at this time.”

“I understand, your highness. Perhaps when things have settled down, it might be possible to do the ride at that time.”

“I’m looking forward to it, sir.”

Once preparations for departure have been completed, the assembled Davion-Steiner party leaves for Comstar’s spaceport, there to board a shuttle to take them to their jumpship waiting in lunar orbit. After the shuttle has reached cis-lunar space, a Davion staff officer comes to the First Prince and says “your highness, I have discovered what was the cause of that interruption at the Comstar delegation’s table; Primus Julian Tiepolo suffered a massive stroke and he’s not expected to survive. Precentor Myndo Waterly is now acting Primus and will be confirmed in that role by a vote of the assembled First Circuit.”

“Indeed. Thank you, lieutenant. General Hodges, your thoughts on this?”

“Your highness, I rather think that I had something to do with this. When I had my interview with the Primus and the other members of the First Circuit, my revelations of the existence of the Comguards, Comstar’s hidden warship fleet, the planning for a false-flag attack on the Sarna HPG station (and how Myndo Waterly ratted out your future wife’s presence in the Styx system to House Kurita) struck them like an asteroid moving at 17 kilometers per second; Tiepolo was so angry that his face looked like a mech reactor that was about to breach. It certainly didn’t help things that I was as condescending as possible.”

“Thank you for your information, General. If only I could have seen the reactions on the faces of the First Circuit; anything which discomfits that bunch is of interest to me. Now that we’re off- planet, what were those future matters you wished to discuss with me?”

“Your highness, what I have to say concerns both you, your good lady wife and Archon Katrina. As all three of you are present. I can begin. In the future that was, you died from a heart attack in 3052; the circumstances of this are that your son returned from his successful rescue of Hohiro Kurita from a Clan assault on Teniente. When he came to see you in your office at the Fox’ Den, he found that you had been stricken with a heart attack after you watched a holodisk sent to you by Sun-Tzu Liao; which disk mentioning his marriage to Isis Liao and insultingly referring to the one sent by Justin Xiang Allard during the Fourth Succession War (which mentioned your terms for the surrender of the St. Ives Commonality).”

“General Hodges, the events you mentioned will, in all likelihood, never happen because of your intervention…”

“True enough, you highness. However, the possibility of you suffering a massive heart attack still exists. I therefore counsel you in the strongest possible terms to have yourself examined by your personal physician once we return to New Avalon; any suggestions he makes as to a treatment regimen must be followed as if they were Holy Writ.”

“You may rest assured that I have no intention of shuffling off my mortal coil before my work is done. I will comply with my doctor’s orders as if my life depended on it because it most certainly does.”

Archon Katrina joins the discussion and says “what of me, General? Can you tell what the future portends?”

“I certainly can, my lady. In the year 3037 of the future that was, you’ll be diagnosed with terminal cancer; this condition coming about as a result of the trip undertaken by you, your husband Arthur Luvon and Morgan Kell to Taran’s World; here, you recovered the ‘Black Box’ technology from the HQ bunker of the 17th Royal Battlemech Division. The bunker has been struck with a dirty nuclear weapon in 2595, and the remaining contamination is what caused the cancer that killed Luvon. Now that you know of your future condition, getting a 10-year headstart on treating it will certainly be beneficial.”

Archon Katrina shivers, as if someone just walked across her own grave. She responds “General Hodges, that was quite a revelation you just made. Like the First Prince, I will immediately seek medical advice after I return to Tharkad and follow it to the letter.” Hanse Davion looks to his wife reassuringly and smiles upon hearing this.

“General, you have mentioned my future and that of Archon Katrina. What of my future children?”

“Your highness, your future offspring are five in number; three sons (Victor, Peter and Arthur) and two daughters (Katherine and Yvonne). Victor would succeed you and assume the mantle of Archon Prince; future history would relate that he was never very comfortable in that role, being a better battlemech commander than a ruler. Katherine (your second child) eventually became the black sheep of the family; she was psychologically unstable, a malingant narcissist who was responsible for the assassination of her mother Melissa. Katherine was the direct cause of the Federated Commonwealth civil war and bears most of the responsibility for the breakup of the realm. She is mentioned prominently in Battletech literature, and players of the game referred to her as the ‘Bitch’ for what she did…”

Upon hearing these further revelations, Hanse Davion grips the armrest of his seat so hard that it creaks audibly; Archon-Designate Melissa raises her hand to her face as if to overcome the revulsion and disgust that she feels. Once the First Prince recovers his composure, he says “forewarned is forearmed, I say.”

“True enough, your highness. Having you around for years longer than in the original history would certainly have helped Victor become a batter ruler; as for knowing about Katherine and what she was like, perhaps psychological screening for your future children would be in order.”

“Thank you, General; Melissa and I will act on your recommendations when the time comes. Do you have anything else for us?”

“Yes, I do. Archon Katrina, when you return to Tharkad, you need to have a sitdown with Cranston Snord and his people.”

“Why is that?”

“You already know how Snord and the Irregulars have gone off the reservation numerous times; whether it’s to retrieve caches of old Terran artifacts, or not telling anyone about the cache of battlemechs and Star League-era equipment they found on a crashed Colossus-class dropship under the ice on Phecda; the list goes on and on and on. Most recently, you gave Snord and the Irregulars the world of Clinton to serve as their base. What Snord already knew before you granted him Clinton was that there was a fully-intact and stocked Castle Brian on that planet. Given Snord’s history of insubordination, his actions are understandable. However, this doesn’t excuse him not telling you about it….”

A look of cold fury crosses Archon Karina’s face as she replies “oh, really? Well, that situation cannot and will not be allowed to stand. For one thing, I am minded to direct that Snord and the Irregulars will have to give back any and all resources they haven’t already expended. I’ll also issue orders that they are to take the lead against House Kurita in Operation Götterdämmerung. Do you concur, Hanse?”

“I do, Katrina; if it were up to me, I’d take back Clinton and cashier the whole bunch. However, sending then against the Dracs will certainly teach them a lesson that needs learning.”

“Indeed.”

The First Prince closes the meeting, and the dropshuttle continues the flight towards Luna. Some hours later it meets up with the FedCom jumpship; the passengers debark and the jumpship powers its way towards the Sol System’s primary jump point, arriving just over nine days later. Thereafter, transit time to New Avalon is greatly lessened by the use of a command circuit of jumpships. After arriving at New Avalon’s jump point, Archon Katrina and her delegation say their farewells and board their own jumpship for the trip back to Tharkad.

Seven days and eight hours later, Hanse Davion and his party are back on New Avalon. Princess Melissa and her attendants settle into New Avalon’s Royal Palace, while Hanse Davion’s first order of business is to call a meeting of his core staff in the Fox’ Den and receive updates on the status of Operation RAT. First to speak is Filed Marshal Yvonne Davion, who says “greetings, your highness. I hope your journey was uneventful.”

“It was, Yvonne. Not only am I now happily married, I got to see the looks of consternation on the faces of Liao, Marik and Kurita when I announced the commencement of Operation RAT. Speaking of which, how does the AFFS stand on that front?”

“Sire, today is September 7th. As of now, the AFFS have rolled across the border between the Federated Suns and the Capellan Confederation; the border worlds now fly the flag of House Davion. We’re now driving towards House Liao’s main industrial centers; I expect to have them in hand within three weeks.”

“Excellent; my compliments to all involved.”

“Your highness, you’ll be less than pleased to know that Comstar has placed the Federated Suns under a communications interdict; Primus Myndo Waterly’s public statement to that effect was that this action was warranted as a result of the unprovoked attack by the Federated Suns on the Capellan Confederation. Per your standing instructions, I have activated the Black Box Network; thus far, it’s working flawlessly.”

“The chancellor tired to have me replaced with a body double, and Comstar has the gall, the sheer unmitigated effrontery to claim that the attacks are unwarranted? I say to hell with Waterly and her bunch of fanatics…”

“My thoughts as well, your highness. You’ll also be interested to know that there has been some political upheaval in the Capellan Confederation as well.”

“What happened? Did Uncle Maxie stub his toes and fall flat on his face or something?”

“No, your highness. When the Chancellor returned to Sian after your wedding, he received intelligence reports stating how badly the CCAF had been hammered thus far by Operation Rat. A report from Justin Allard indicates that Maximilian Liao lost his mind and is no longer capable of acting as Chancellor; Romano Liao is now running things…”

“I can see how that would be of interest. General Hodges, your assessment of the situation?”

“Your highness, after the way I rejected Romano’s advances to me and publically-humiliated her at the reception, she grew a hateboner for me the size of a McKenna-class battleship. Because of my association with you and the territorial losses the Capellan Confederation has suffered thus far, that hatred has grown to include you and the Federated Commonwealth as a whole. Plainly speaking, that miserable excuse for a woman is crackers; she’s dangerous and therefore, highly unpredictable. I wouldn’t be surprised if she one-ups Comstar and makes a play for the New Avalon Institute of Science (or me, for that matter).”

“I am in agreement with your assessment of the situation, General. Field Marshal, what preparations have you made for New Avalon’s defense?”

“Your highness, I anticipated that there might be some kind of attack on New Avalon. I therefore acted upon my authority as Prince’s Champion and ordered the upgrade of the Hong Kong Cavaliers to the status of a full regiment. They have been refitted with battlemechs from your share of the haul from Helm, and these machines also incorporate General Hodges’ new technology; your personal command lance has likewise been refitted. All four machines are Battlemaster Specials, with the ERPPC being paired with an ER large pulse laser. Secondary armament consists of four ER medium pulse lasers (two each facing forward in the right and left torsos, two ER medium lasers facing rearward and a Streak SRM-6 in the center torso facing forward.”

“Excellent. I want these developments kept under wraps for as long as possible; if the Capellans come calling, I see no reason why they shouldn’t be given an opportunity to die for their country; as for Comstar, they can go take a flying leap out an airlock without a space suit.”

“Understood, your highness.”

Hanse Davion now turns to General Hodges and says “it will be some little time before your new tank design is available in numbers. Therefore, I am seconding you to the College of Military Science so you can learn how to plot and fight your battlemech; you are one of my most valuable assets. If New Avalon does come under threat, I want you to be ready to aid in the defense of the planet and of NAIS.”

“Sir, yessir.”

Lastly, the First Prince says “Field Marshal, the situation regarding Wolf’s Dragoons and the Draconis Combine has been settled amicably. Therefore, I want the Dragoons reposted from the Draconis March to the front with the Capellan Confederation.”

“Very good, your highness.”

Elsewhere, Archon Katrina arrived back on Tharkad and immediately called Cranston Snord on the carpet in front of her desk. After stalling his response and attempting to deny what he and the Irregulars had done, the Archon laid down the law. The Irregulars were to be immediately posted to the front against the Draconis Combine, and all tech and materiel that hadn’t been expended was to be returned to House Steiner immediately. Additionally, the Irregulars’ tenancy of Clinton has been downgraded to provisional; they will be allowed to keep it, provided there are no further instances of insubordination or of collecting trips on the side.

Cranston Snord is dismissed from the Archon’s presence, looking for all the world like someone kicked his dog, burned down his house, stole his battlemech and told him that his wife was cheating with another man. After he leaves, the Archon calls General Edward Regis (Commanding General of the LCAF) to request an update on the status of the 1st and 2nd Royal Guards and the 10th Lyran Guards. After being informed that those units have been refitted with Star League neurohelmets and General Hodges’ technology, and that those same units are in action against House Kurita, Archon Katrina issues orders for the Fourth Royal Guards (previously destroyed in 2848 in action against the Draconis Combine on New Caledonia) to be reconstituted and fitted out with all the latest advancements.

The Tricks of the Trade
August 31st, 3028
NAIS College of Military Science

Per the First Prince’s order, General Hodges reports to the College of Military Science at NAIS on August 31st in order to begin his training to become a battlemech pilot; the previous week having been given over to settling his personal affairs before beginning training; this consists of Kym Sorensen taking charge of the house and moving its vulnerable contents to secure storage; principally, the vehicles, furnishings, electronics and the house media library. General Hodges’ collection of arms and armor is moved to the magazine located below the garage (the standards for which facility exceed those of a Minuteman-III missile silo).

The training at NAIS is expected to take the next six months; as he is already a serving military officer, Hodges is outside the cadet hierarchy. By agreement among CMS staff, General Hodges is appointed to the rank of Brigade Commander of the Corps of Cadets.

The first two weeks is the initial training, conditioning and assessment phase, consisting of screaming, running, more screaming, more running, very long days and short nights on beds in an open-bay barracks. During this period, Hodges is sometimes assigned the task of leading the cadets in their morning run around the campus. On these occasions, Hodges stands in front of the assembled cadets and thunders out “GOOD MORNING, CADETS; A FINE DAY TO BE A MECHWARRIOR”; the cadets respond with equal enthusiasm “SIR YES SIR.” After a series of warmup exercises, the brigade of cadets is called to attention…

“BRIGADE, ATTENTION; RIGHT….FACE.

FORWARD….MARCH”

When the brigade is all in motion, General Hodges calls out “DOUBLE TIME….MARCH!!” Immediately, the cadets begin to run. A few seconds later, Hodges begins singing a running cadence in order to help the cadets keep time.

“When I get to Hell, the Devil gonna say..
How’d you earn your living,
How’d you earn your pay?

I replied with a boot to his chest
Earned my living laying souls to rest

‘Cause I’m hardcore
Lean and Mean
Wanna be,
Like me…”

Over the next six months, Hodges assists the training staff in carrying out their duties, while undergoing his own course of instruction. Coursework begins in the classroom, then moves onto the simulators and finally, to training in CLN-7V Chameleons provided by NAIS. Eventually, the cadets of the brigade move on to training with examples of the battlemechs they’ll be piloting in service. For General Hodges, this is when his personal machine comes in. This ‘mech stands at 12 meters in height and masses out at 100 tons; thanks to its 400 XL reactor and improved myomer fibers, it is capable of cruising at 54 kph and running at 85 kph. For armament, there is an ER PPC in each arm and three large pulse lasers (one each in the center, right and left torsos); the weapons have had their accuracy enhanced, and all of them have been fitted with improved cooling jackets and stabilization systems. Additionally, the field coils of the ER PPCs and the optics of the lasers have been tuned so that the beams they produce are a bright, brilliant shade of emerald green. The machine’s heat levels are better-managed by the use of a battle computer and a radical heat sink system, while better fire control is provided by a targeting computer from the Helm cache (plus a multi-spectral rangefinder). Lastly, the machine is controlled by a Star League-era neurohelmet (also from Helm).

As an aside, General Hodges’ machine is painted in the style of a certain ancient Terran comic-book character, with the torso, shoulders, waist and hips in light green, while the upper arms, upper legs, elbows and knees are in dark green; the lower legs are light green (the same shade as on the torso) and the lower arms are in white; to suggest that the machine is wearing boots and gloves. Lastly, there is a circular device (resembling a stylized lantern) painted on the center torso, as follows:

The very first time General Hodges boots his machine up, a number of diagnostic feeds start scrolling down on subsidiary screens in the cockpit, while the computer’s main display screen makes a number of visual prompts, as follows:

COMMENCE NEURO HELMET SYNC ON DEFAULTS? Y/N

Hodges toggles yes, and is greeted by a slight amount of vertigo as the neurohelmet establishes an uplink with his brain; the feeling passes quickly, and the next prompt comes up on the screen.

“VOICE COMMAND SYSTEM AND SECURITY VOICEPRINT SYSTEM NOT ENGAGED. DO YOU WISH TO SETUP NOW?”

Hodges toggles yes on the control panel, whereupon, the computer asks him to choose an activation phrase to serve as a means of voiceprint identification; the sequence that Hodges chooses is as follows:

‘In brightest day, in blackest night
No evil will escape my sight

Let those who worship Evil’s Might
Beware my power…
GREEN LANTERN’S LIGHT…’

The final two prompts are :

‘MEDICAL SENSORS NULL RESPONSE. DO YOU WISH TO PROCEED?’ and ‘NEUROHELMET CALIBRATION HAS NOT BEEN PERFORMED FOR OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE. DO YOU WISH TO PROCEED?’

Both are toggled in the affirmative, whereupon the computer responds “Identity confirmed; command authorization accepted.”

Hodges and the other cadets move out to the gunnery range under the watchful eyes of their instructors. Here, they commence with the first of a great number of practice sessions. The machines fire at targets both stationary and moving at various speeds, from the halt and while cruising and running. Once gunnery is completed, the cadets move onto simulated engagements where they are divided into groups and pitted against each other. Lastly, the training cadre takes turns acting as aggressors and defenders against the Brigade of Cadets.

During the course of training, General Hodges’ instinctive grasp of gunnery, tactics and strategy consistently earn him high marks from his instructors. In fact, Hodges is so well-regarded by the faculty that he’s often assigned the job of providing additional instruction to his fellow cadets; Hodges’ age and the affectionate regard that his fellow cadets have for him leads to the bestowal of an appropriate nickname…’Grandpa’.

Eventually, the training is completed and there is a graduation ceremony; the guest of honor is none other than Field Marshal Yvonne Davion. Certificates of completion are handed out, and the newly-minted mechwarriors move onto their first duty assignments. Once the festivities breaks up, Marshal Davion calls General Hodges aside and says “the First Prince wishes to offer you his congratulations on the successful completion of your training. His Highness would have been here in person, but his presence has bene almost continuously required at the Fox’ Den.”

“I understand, Field Marshal. Can you tell me about the progress of Operation RAT and Operation GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG? The training cadre purposefully kept us in the dark about what was going on, just so we wouldn’t be distracted.”

“Indeed. Operations against the Capellan Confederation are well in hand, with the AFFS having taken more than a third of House Liao’s territory thus far. On the Steiner/Kurita front, the Archon’s forces have come across the border in a series of waves; all of these having been staggered so that the logistics train can more easily catch up. As of today, the LCAF have taken 23 planets from the Dieron and Rasalhague Military districts, plus four planets from the Free Worlds League; most importantly, the worlds captured by the LCAF were previously Lyran territory. You see, Archon Katrina’s plan wasn’t so much to take territory from House Kurita as it was to prevent the Coordinator from sending reinforcements to the Capellans.”

“How about the Federated Suns/Draconis Combine? I can’t imagine that it’s standing still…”

“No it isn’t, General. The Combine has managed to capture two planets from the Federated Suns while losing six in return. You’ll be interested to learn that Maximilian Liao is dead; he killed himself three weeks ago. His daughter Romano is now the Chancellor of what’s left of the Capellan Confederation”

General Hodges responds “O frabjous day, Callooh, Callay!!” Uncle Maxie finally got tired of getting bitchslapped, so he decided to ring down the curtain and join the Choir Invisible. You say that Romano Liao is the new Chancellor; why am I not surprised?? You should tell your people that Psycho-Bitch is not to be underestimated; she’s dangerous, unpredictable and she hates me and the Federated Suns with a passion…”

“I’ll be sure to pass that on, General.”

“Thank you, Field Marshal. I do have one request, however…”

“What’s that?”

“If Romano Liao should happen to come into the hands of the AFFS, I want her brought before me.”

“What are your intentions? I hope you don’t plan on killing her; that would create more problems that it would solve.”

“Hardly that. I’m going to bend Psycho-Bitch and give her what she needs; a good spanking. After all, if she wants to be treated like an adult, she shouldn’t have acted like some spoiled, petulant child…”

A smile crosses Filed Marshal Davion’s face as she replies “I’ll have to bring that up with the First Prince; I doubt that he’ll let you do that. Still, the very idea would be good for a few laughs.”

After some further discussion, the two officers part company and go their separate ways. General Hodges returns home to an enthusiastic greeting from Kym Sorsensen.

“Hello, James; you’re none the worse for the wear, I see.”

“True enough, dear. My fellow cadets were a good bunch; going through that course was like a combination of Plebe Year at West Point and the Armor School at Fort Knox. Anything of note happen while I was away?”

“Yes, actually. Dr. Banzai from NAIS was over here a couple of days ago; he wanted me to tell you that there are a number of computer manufacturers that are interested in licensing your new chip fabrication technology, and they want to discuss the details.”

“Alright, I’ll give BB a call straight away. Anything else?”

“Yes. Just yesterday, a letter arrived for you from the Department of Military Administration; here it is.”

Sorenson hands the envelope over, and Hodges opens & reads it. A few seconds later, an enormous self-satisfied grin crosses his face.

“I see you got some good news, James.”

“Wonderful news, actually. Here in the Inner Sphere, just as on old Terra, the ways of the Military Bureaucracy passeth all mortal understanding. This letter states that the Paymaster General considers that the event which caused my appearance here on New Avalon was my recruitment into the AFFS and that the effective date was not that of my arrival, but the date on which the Transition Event grabbed me. You see, that date was June of 2019. This means that for purposes of payroll and accounting, I have been on the books with the AFFS for over one thousand years. Accordingly, I am owed accumulated back pay and accrued interest for that time..”

“How much money are we talking about?”

“Well; how high can you count, my dear?”

The story I have written thus far runs up to the climactic battle with the Clans.

Would like to see your material.

The Ides of March, Part 1
March 15th, 3029
NAIS Campus, Avalon City

Now that General Hodges is finished with his mechwarrior training, he throws himself back into his work at NAIS; his stabilization and rangefinder systems are now coming into use, and selected units are being refitted with his electrothermal-chemical autocannons. All of General Hodges; attention is now occupied with finishing the development work on the MBT-70 Patton-II tank project. This vehicle is intended to be a radical advance over every other armored vehicle in the Inner Sphere; it will incorporate all of General Hodges’ new technology and will have certain design features that will make it more survivable than any other ground combat vehicle.

For armament, the Patton will have a 150-mm electrothermal-kinetic autocannon in the turret; the difference between an ETC autocannon and an ETK autocannon is that the entire bore of an ETK weapon is the combustion chamber, rather than just the breech. Ammunition for the main gun is carried in a circular magazine located below the turret; which magazine having a capacity of 60 rounds. Secondary armament is carried in a mini-turret located on top of the main turret; this armament is a gauss gatling machinegun that can serve in the anti-personnel, anti-missile and anti-aircraft roles. For fire control, both weapons are stabilized, have multi-spectral rangefinders and advanced targeting computers.

At 70 tons, the Patton-II MBT is far better-protected than any ground combat vehicle or battlemech (with 50% of its weight going to armor). In game terms, the armor is hardened (taking half-damage from all attacks), with no weight penalty and incorporates improved stealth technology (targeting penalties for attackers are +1 at short range, +2 at medium range, +3 at long range and +4 at extreme range); the front glacis of the turret and hull are sloped at an angle of 60°, meaning that effective armor thickness is doubled against line-of-sight attacks. The sides of the turret and the hull are sloped at 30°, which increases effective armor thickness by 50%; targeting penalties against sloped armor are +2 for a 60° slope and +1 for a 30° slope.

Beyond the armor that a Patton-II MBT carries, the hull and turret are designed to be as tough as possible. In game terms, the structure of the hull and turret are considered to be reinforced at no cost in extra weight. The hull is divided into three separate compartments, each with its own ;internal armor. The crew compartment (four men) is forwardmost; the turret mount and magazine are in the middle compartment while the power plant and transmission are in the rear compartment. The interior surfaces of the hull and turret are protected with a spall liner against the possibility of attacks with HESH munitions; there is also a fire-suppression system. Lastly, a Patton-II is fully-protected against NBC attacks, with the life support system capable of being fully-sealed for up to 72 hours (even underwater).

Performance-wise, a Patton-II’s tracked motive system allows it to move faster than a vehicle or battlemech of the same weight and engine size. The engine is a 210-rated XL fusion reactor, which allows it to cruise over open country at 43 kph and sprint at 65 kph; on paved roads, the tank can cruise at 54 kph and sprint at 85 kph.

Once the Patton-II’s design and performance specifications have been finalized, the plans are turned over to Corean Enterprises so that a number of the tanks can be built for testing and evaluation purposes; the initial contract is for 12 examples (with an option to expand the order to 48 if circumstances warrant it), with all costs to be paid by General Hodges out of his own pocket. Unbeknownst to the First Prince, General Hodges and other elements of the AFFC hierarchy, circumstances are now developing where an operational unit of Patton-II's would have been highly-useful.

On the afternoon of March 15th, 3029, General Hodges returned home for meetings with representatives of Corean Enterprises and a private meeting with Dr. Banzai and Professor Samuel Muyskens (Dean of the NAIS College of Finance). For the meeting with the people from Corean, matters are pro forma, consisting of little more than signing the procurement contract and seeing that the funds transfer from General Hodges’ personal account goes through. Once this meeting concludes, Professor Muyskens and Dr. Banzai arrive.

“Good afternoon, gentlemen; thank you for coming. You’re both in the know about who I am and where I came from; my origins are one of the Federated Commonwealth’s most closely-held secrets and must remain so for as long as humanly possible. Dr. Banzai, per our previous discussion, you’ll be my go-between with those computer people, the ones who want to license my computer technology.”

“Very good, sir.”

“Before I examined for what passes as state-of-the-art computer technology in the Inner Sphere, I had thought that, after 1,000 years and more, computers would be far more advanced that they were in my own day. The degree of surprise I felt when I discovered this was not so can scarcely be exaggerated. The most advanced computer systems in existence are the CPU of the M9 Pavise battle station and the Tacticon B-2000 Battle Computer from the CP-10-Z ‘Cyclops’. When I examined the specifications for these systems, I found that one of my laptop computers has several orders of magnitude more processing power than the M9 Pavise CPU.”

“How is that possible? The M9 CPU is considered to be the highest achievement of Star League computer technology….”

“Dr. Banzai, the differences in the computer technology that I know and the technology that you are familiar with stem from the differences between my history and yours. For example, in the history that was, computer technology underwent a series of radical design changes; these changes resulted in ever-smaller and more powerful machines. A good deal of these advancements came about as the result of improved chip fabrication technologies. The first of these was the P-Type metal-oxide-semiconductor logic process (or P-MOS), which came out in June, 1960. This was followed by the C-MOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Substrate) single-gate process in February, 1963 and the Multi-Gate MOSFET (Metal Oxide Substrate Field-Effect Transistor) process in August of 1984. As a result of these continual improvements, the size of individual integrated circuits shrank from 20 micrometers in 1968 to just 5 nanometers in 2018; the continually-shrinking size of integrated circuits was illustrated by a principle called ‘Moore’s Law, which was formulated by Gordon Moore in 1965 when he was head of Research & Development for Fairchild Semiconductor.”

“Gordon Moore? Don’t believe that I’ve ever heard of him…”

“There’s one difference between my history and yours, Dr. Banzai. Moore’s Law stated that the number of transistors on a computer chip would double every year until 1980, after which the rate would slow to doubling every two years thereafter. Of course, the law doesn’t apply to such technologies as quantum computing, optical computing and DNA-based (or biological) computing. Computer technology as you know it diverged from what I knew because in your history, Gordon Moore was never born and the C-MOS and Multi-Gate MOSFET processes were never developed; this is why your computers are massive compared to the ones I know.”

“Very true, sir; the M9 Pavise CPU is the size of a small house. “

“Dr. Banzai, where your computers have it over mine is in the areas of reliability and data storage capacity. In the Inner Sphere, you can leave a battlemech in storage for 500 years, come back at that time and its computers will still boot up. Back in the 20th and 21st centuries, a computer owner would be lucky if his machine lasted for five to seven years or so…”

“What?? That makes no sense at all.”

“It does from the standpoint of a computer manufacturer; the principal is called ‘Planned Obsolescence’ Computers and other machines in those days were designed to work for a certain period of time, then begin to break down (thus requiring the purchase of a new machine when the cost of repairs became too great). Look at it this way; why would a company want to make and sell a computer that never wore out? Such machines would be very popular for a short period of time, then the company would go out of business because their machines didn’t need to be replaced..”

“I see.”

“As for comparison of data storage, my desktop computer has a 16-terabyte hard drive and my laptops each have a 10-terabyte drive. Your computers have similarly-sized drives that hold upwards of hundreds of exabytes; that’s several million times greater.”

“What do you want me to tell the computer people?”

“Tell them that you are in touch with an individual who has developed radically-advanced CPU technology. I am familiar with the manufacturing processes that I have described, and I am also quite skilled at computer design and programming. In exchange for being shown how to manufacture new computer chips according to the design principles I mentioned (and how to build and program computers to use them), I will require a royalty payment of 5% for any product that incorporates my technology. This is certainly a great deal of money; however, manufacturers who get with the program and do business with me are going to have to invent new branches of hypermathematics to describe the insane amounts of money they’ll be making.”

“Is that all?”

“Not quite. At another time, I’ll tell you about something called the Internet…”

“I’m looking forward to it, sir.”

Having listened in to the discussion thus far, Professor Muyskens speaks up and says “General Hodges, I presume that you called me here to discuss financial matters.”

“I did, sir. Like Dr. Banzai, you’re in the know about my origins. Therefore, I’d like to use you as my financial intermediary…”

“How so?”

“To begin with, I have recently been settled with a very large amount of money by the AFFC Department of Military Administration; I wish to invest a certain percentage of it in the Steiner and Davion stock markets.”

“What percentages do you have in mind?”

“Ten Tera-bills in the Davion market and the same amount in the Steiner market; these monies are to be apportioned, with one-third in stocks, one-third in bonds and one-third in Index-Linked mutual funds.”

“Very well; that shouldn’t be too hard to accomplish. What else did you have in mind?”

“I have an extensive library of 20th and 21st-century music and video recordings (songs, movies, TV and documentary series; that sort of thing). I have studied popular culture in the Inner Sphere since my sudden arrival and I have determined that some 90% of the material in my library is currently unknown. I am in need of additional development capital for my Landhold in the Bristol system; I therefor propose to license the broadcast of my TV and documentary series to any interested networks for the sum of 2,500,000 D-bills per episode; in the history that I came from, such monies were called ‘syndication’ fees. As for movies, there will be a 30% commission due me from any and all revenue generated by the movies I release. Finally, the songs I have in my library will be handled somewhat differently; each and every public venue who wishes to play my songs will pay an annual license fee of 500 D-bills. For sales of the songs to individuals, my cut will be 50% of the net proceeds.”

“I’ll reach out to my contacts and put your proposals before them.”

“Thanks, Doc. When you talk to those people, tell them that I’ll be grateful for their business.” There is a slight, businesslike pause as a thin smile crosses General Hodges’ face, then he says “If they choose not to do business with me, I’ll find someone else to be grateful to.” Just as the meeting concludes, General Hodges’ and Dr. Banzai’s personal communicators start to go off.

Hodges thumbs his communicator and says “Lancer Six-Actual here. What’s the situation?”

“Sir, this is the watch officer in the Communications Section at Mount Davion. Our early warning network has informed us of numerous bogies inbound from New Avalon’s pirate jump points.”

“Do you have any information on the composition of the incoming?”

“The number of dropships indicates that possible enemy strength is regimental-level or greater.”

“Very good, Inform command staff that I’ll be there in ten minutes; Lancer Six-Actual out.”

“Professor Muyskens, we’ll have to continue this discussion another day as it seems that someone with more balls than brains is coming to crash the party. Dr. Banzai, you had better make tracks…”

The two men leave as General Hodges begins to suit up. Just before he heads out the door, Kym Sorensen comes up with a worried look on her face and says “Jim, I just got the word on my communicator. Do you think that it’s House Liao or Comstar?”

“Don’t know just yet, dear; if it’s those ****** toaster-worshipping Ma Bell wanna-bes in Comstar, they must have gotten information about what we grabbed from Helm and New Dallas, and are coming here to break stuff and set things on fire. If it’s Romano Liao’s merry men, they’re coming here because Psycho-Bitch grew a massive hateboner for me after the way I humiliated her on Terra.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“You’re in charge here until I return; if I don’t come back, there’s a hard copy of my will on my desk on my desk. You’ve got the access codes for my Infiltrator Armor, so you can use it and any anything else in the magazine to defend the property. ”

Hodges and Sorensen exchange a quick embrace, then he’s out the door. His last acts before getting into his car are to belt on his sidearm, pocket his St. George and St. Barbara medals and to tie one of Kym’s scarves around his right arm, after the manner of a knight carrying his lady’s favor when going into a tournament or battle.

The Ides of March, Part 2
The Fox’ Den, Mount Davion
March 15th, 3029

General Hodges climbs into the cockpit of his mech and begins to boot up the control systems. When prompted by the computer, he repeats the command activation sequence:

‘In brightest day, in blackest night
No evil will escape my sight

Let those who worship evil’s might
Beware my power

GREEN LANTERN’S LIGHT!!’

Hodges and his machine set out for Mount Davion at a dead run (67.1 mph); so that he doesn’t get fired at by the defenses, he calls out over the radio ‘Lancer-Six Actual inbound, ETA 15 minutes Over.”

“Copy that, Lancer Six Actual. Out.”

Upon arriving at Mount Davion, General Hodges heads to the Fox’ Den at the run. When he enters the complex, he’s greeted to the sights and sounds of dozens of military staff who are attempting to make sense of the developing situation. Among those present are First Prince Hanse Davion, Field Marshal Yvonne Davion (commanding officer of the AFFC) and Major General Edward Valos (commanding officer of the New Avalon Crucis March Militia.

Hanse Davion calls Hodges over and says “General, we’ve got quite a few uninvited guests about to arrive.”

“Indeed we are, your highness. Field Marshal, might I have an appreciation of the developments thus far?”

"General Hodges, half an hour ago, New Avalon Traffic Control reported a number of dropships coming in from one of the planet’s pirate jump points and burning hard. Based on the types of dropships, we estimate the force inbound is at least of regimental strength; perhaps greater. The tracks indicate that the enemy is going to land in and around the city of New Avalon, itself. SOP in situations like this is for the raid sirens to sound and for the citizens to make their way to shelters. Simultaneously, the alert fighters are in the air and SAM batteries around the city are standing to.”

Hanse Davion speaks up and says “General Hodges, I’ll have your thoughts on this..”

“Your highness, it looks like House Liao is coming to pay us a discourtesy call. However, it strikes me that they shouldn’t have the moxie to make a hit like this; especially since the AFFC have been running over the Capellan Confederation like a tidal wave; there’s also the fact that you successfully peeled off the St. Ives Compact, the Tikonov Free Republic and got them to come over to our side. The only way that Romano Liao could have pulled this off is with the assistance of everyone’s favorite phone company. Romano hates me with a mad passion for the way I played her like the chump she is back on Terra, and for those toga-wearing toaster-worshipping Idiots in Comstar to be involved strongly suggests that word of what was recovered on Helm and New Dallas leaked out. Myndo Waterly shares Romano Liao’s intense dislike of me, so it seems me that the result of an agreement between the Capellans and Comstar is what we’re seeing here.”

“A cogent analysis, General.”

“Thank you, your highness.”

General Hodges scratches his chin for a few moments. Then, he says “Your highness, gentlemen. Something seems to be rather off about this attack…”

“What do you mean, sir?”

“Your highness, it is simply this. Why are the Capellans making such haste to get on the ground? They don’t even have aerospace fighters out on BARCAP; it’s as if they don’t care that we know they’re coming and that we’re ready for them. Marshal Davion, what’s the procedure for civilian traffic in situations like this?”

“Traffic Control has orders to get all civilian aerospace traffic on the ground as soon as possible; the better to get them out of the line of fire.”

“Most prudent.”

More thoughtful consideration follows, then General Hodges says “Gentlemen, what’s coming down towards Avalon City is not the main thrust of the attack.”

“What do you mean?”

“Your highness, when I served in Iraq and Afghanistan, the guys in black pajamas had the habit of carrying out two-phase attacks. The first phase was as obvious as it could be, and served to draw our attention away from the true attack; which would come from the opposite direction. Since Comstar is apparently involved, their target is the NAIS campus. Think of it, the forces that come down in and around Avalon City would serve to fix our attention here, while the others land out at NAIS and proceed to wreck the place.”

Hanse Davion starts suddenly as he realizes what General Hodges portends. Then, he shouts an order “Field Marshal, send word to the Hong Kong Cavaliers and flag it ‘SWORD ONE—CRITIC’ Tell Dr. Banzai to get his people moving immediately.”

“Yes, your highness.”

The First Prince looks to General Hodges and says “what of your house, sir? What preparations have you made?”

“Your highness, all of my media files, my computers, my library, my vehicles and my weapons have been moved to secure storage off-site. I’ve had several automated sentry bunkers installed around my perimeter, and Kym Sorensen is in charge of the place. She and I have planned for the eventuality of something like this, so she’ll be rolling out the unwelcome mat for anyone stupid enough to come after my place.”

“Very well, General. Let’s get moving and show these fools just how big of a mistake they made.”

The First Prince heads off towards the bays where his personal battlemech and the others in his command company are waiting. Hanse Davion’s machine and the others in his command lance are identical examples (the better to avoid ‘headhunter’-type attacks) of a customized Battlemaster rebuilt with technology from the Helm and New Dallas caches; so too were the other machines in the company. Outside the Fox’ Den, General Hodges’ mech ‘Green Lantern’ is moving.

Green Lantern’s battle computer is voice-activated, so Hodges says “HAL, cue the music if you please”. Immediately, a selection of late 20th-century popular music begins to blast out from the Battlemech’s war horns at 200 decibels; the first tune is ‘Men of Harlech’, followed by ‘March of Cambreadth' and the theme to ‘Beowulf’.

Along with the First Prince’s command company and General Hodges’ battlemech, a brigade from the New Avalon Crucis March Militia deploys themselves in the area between the foothills of Mount Davion, Davion Peace Park and Avalon City. High overhead, the descending dropships are being engaged by aerospace fighters from the CMM and by batteries of surface-to-air missiles; suddenly, the dropships break apart and deploy dozens of battlmech drop pods. These pods slow their descent via the use of retro-rockets until such time as they break apart and deploy the mechs contained within; final descent is by specialized parachute packs. There are now two battalions of mechs on the ground, a total of 72 machines in all.

Hanse Davion calls out over his command circuit and says “Knight Company, Knight-One Actual; form on me and kick it up to 70 kph. Lancer Six, you’re on my right. Forth and fear no darkness!!” General Hodges and his machine do as instructed; ‘Green Lantern’ is a 100-ton machine, capable of (thanks to a refit with improved myomer fibers) moving at up to 86.4 kph; thus, Hodges is well-able to keep up with the First Prince’s command lance.

Battle is now joined, with a reinforced company of enemy heavies coming after Hanse Davion’s command company. First to fire is an enemy Catapault, who targets General Hodges’ machine from long range with a pair of LRM-15 flights; due to the range involved, very few of the missiles hit. Hodges responds by firing his twin ER PPCs; the brilliant emerald-green beams flash across the battlefield, striking the enemy machine on the right arm and right torso. The hit to the arm strips off all of the armor and wrecks 20% of the arm’s internal structure, while the right torso hit removes 75% of the armor protecting it.

Another LRM volley follows, with nine missiles from one flight and six from the second striking various areas on ‘Green Lantern’s center torso, side torsos, arms and legs. Hodges’ response is immediate; two of his three large pulse lasers hit the Catapault’s already-damaged right torso, with one hitting the center torso. The first two hits remove the rest of the armor and go on to hit the LRM-15’s ammo bin. The resulting detonation destroys the enemy machine in a huge fiery explosion.

Triumphantly, General Hodges calls out over the command circuit and taunts the enemy battlemechs by saying “Is that the best you’ve got? Hab SoSlI’ Quch**…” Elsewhere across the battlefield, a second reinforced company of enemy mechs starts to make its way towards the gates of Avalon City, only to be intercepted by a company of the Crucis March Militia; a vicious melee breaks out, with volleys of PPC, laser and LRM fire being exchanged.

The next call over the command circuit is from Hanse Davion, who says “Knight Company, Knight-One Actual; engage by lance at your discretion; Crucis Marchers, do likewise.” The orders are acknowledged and the several elements of the defenders of New Avalon go to work.

Elsewhere, action is beginning. The NAIS campus is 30 kilometers south of Avalon City, and is noted for a geographical feature called the Front Range by some and the ‘Shield Wall’ by others. The Front Range (named for a similar feature in the State of Colorado on Terra) is an immense outcropping of granite running from the southwest towards the northeast; it divides the NAIS Campus in two, with the NAIS spaceport to the west and the NAIS administration, residence halls, laboratories, workshops and other facilities to the east; there is no direct access to the NAIS spaceport except by flying in there, or from a pair of heavily-guarded access tunnels bored through the Front Range.

When the warning order was flashed from the Fox’ Den, the tunnels were immediately sealed while Dr. Banzai and the Cavaliers moved to defend NAIS. Unfortunately, they couldn’t be everywhere at once; the attackers quickly overwhelmed the defenses of the NAIS spaceport. Seeing that the tunnels through the Range were too well-defended, the Liao commander chose instead to divide his forces (amounting to a full regiment of 108 battlemechs and a number of ground vehicles); half will go around the south of the Range, while the other half will proceed to the north.

As the orders are issued, the commander of the Liao forces comes to the head of the special detail accompanying the raid and says “Esteemed Tsen Shang, by order of the Strategios, I am to detach a platoon of Death Commandos, two wheeled transports and place them under your command so that the late insult to our revered Chancellor on Terra can be avenged. To ensure the success of your mission, I will also detach a Stinger and a Wasp for general support.”

Shang replies “Honored Shiao-Zhang, your devotion to the cause will be noted for the record and brought to the Chancellor’s attention; know that I will bring back that bastard Hodges’ head in a bag and put it on the Chancellor’s desk.” So, Tsen Shang and his men peel off from the main force and proceed on their mission of murder; they are as yet unaware that preparations have been made to receive such unwelcome guests.

Previously, after the events surrounding General Hodges’ arrival in this reality, his house and the area around it was fortified to resist possible attack; the grounds were then sculpted in such a way as to give the effect of field works, without actually looking like fortifications. The only direct way through the works is a long driveway leading up to the front of General Hodges’ house. Additionally, four concealed automated weapons turrets were installed and sited so that no approach to the house could be made without coming under fire from three of them at the same time; each of these bunkers was identically armed and equipped, with a pair of electrothermal gatling guns, a medium laser and an SRM-4. Below each turret is an armored magazine with substantial supplies of ammunition for the weapons.

Having been left in charge of defending General Hodges’ house, Kym Sorensen makes her preparations with a will. She dons Hodges’ suit of infiltrator armor and performs a complete set of function checks, then arms herself with a superheavy autocannon carried on a stabilization harness; all that can be done now is to wait.

The attack isn’t long in coming, as Tsen Shang has been provided with General Hodges’ address by the Chancellor. As they approach the compound, Shang orders two squads of his Death Commandos to assume an overwatch position while the other two squads move forward to engage the objective; the Stinger and the Wasp are deployed to either side of the overwatch position so as to provide support when needed.

The 3rd and 4th commando squads cautiously approach the house and see that there are no obvious defenses. The only item of note is an antique bronze artillery piece doing sentry duty near the front door; for these men, this is the last thought that they will ever have. Suddenly, the artillery piece fires and takes everyone by surprise.

Kym Sorensen, having been lectured by General Hodges about the history of the cannon and the conflict in which it formerly served, took advantage of the weapon’s unfamiliarity to those not in the know and loaded it with a charge of 2 ½ lbs of black powder from the magazine under the garage. Then, two stands of grapeshot and one of canister were rammed down the barrel. Lastly, a remote control initiator was fitted to the weapon’s touch hole.

When Sorensen judged the time was right, she fired the gun by remote control. Instantly, the 14 men who were so confidently approaching the house were smashed into oblivion by a total of 36 lbs of cast-iron shot. Having been arrogantly sure of the possibilities of success, Tsen Shang was dismayed when half of his Death Commandos were suddenly blotted from existence; angrily he shouts ‘OPEN FIRE’.

The remaining two squads of Death Commandos assume concealed positions and begin to ply their weapons, while the Stinger and the Wasp begin to fire on the house. Suddenly, the four concealed weapons turrets rise above-ground from their armored bunkers and begin to open fire. Under cover of the ensuing engagement, Kym Sorensen activates the stealth systems in her armor makes her way around to the right flank of the attackers. When she’s in position, she drops concealment and begins to hose the attackers with autocannon fire.

The Stinger and the Wasp start to bear on Sorenson’s position and exchange fire with her. In so doing, their thinly-armored sides and rear are exposed to the fire from the automated weapons turrets. Within 60 seconds or so, both machines are eliminated; seeing the rest of their force eliminated so rapidly, the crews of the two wheeled transports decide they have urgent business elsewhere and very quickly retreat.

After the engagement is over, Kym Sorensen is assessing the damage to General Hodges’ property. While walking around she takes note of the dead and wounded; by a strange trick of fate, one of the survivors is none other than Tsen Shang. He makes a feeble attempt to escape, but is very quickly run down and knocked unconscious.

More distantly, the remaining Liao attackers have flanked the southwestern and northeastern edges of the Front Range. What follows in an intense slugging match, where both sides attempt to maneuver for best advantage. Unfortunately for the attackers, the Hong Kong Cavaliers have been refitted with material from the Helm Cache and the very best of General Hodges’ new technology.

In other circumstances, a battle between numerically-identical battlemech units would be a long, drawn out and very costly affair; not so in this instance. Dr. Banzai and the men & women of the Hong Kong Cavaliers use their superior speed, maneuverability and firepower to overwhelm their opponents while losing very few of their own machines in return. All told, the engagement lasts just ten minutes.

One fact-check comment unless you actually meant it.

The ship Hanse and company used to leave earth from the moon to the jump point was said to be a jumpship. A jumpship only has station-keeping thrusters that put out approximately  .1g of thrust.
I think you meany Dropship. But he could have used the dropship from planet surface to jump point.
