Tanks (armored fighting vehicle types) are called such because the British were trying to conceal they were working on a new prototype weapon during WW I. They were afraid German spies would get wind of these things being built under some kind of coverings so they released information that the government was building a new kind of "tank" for water storage and such. The name stuck.
