There was already a thread more or less on the subject, but it being 7 years old and not finding the right answer on what to do in a quick read of forum rules, I figured I'd start a new one.
Now inevitably, a wargamer usually spends far more time working on his miniatures, terrain and discovering more advanced or new rulesets then actually WARGAMING. I'm starting a new project next week and that got me wondering if the BT community tended to "see someone else once in a while" in the wargaming area, and what particular wargames. After all, it was here I learned of a few whose mechanics I discovered with delight.
Personnally, besides BT, I involve myself in 15 mm WW2 miniatures (land based and attack aircraft), with which I occasionally play flames of war with my family. Ain't quite in the age bracket of my kid, but we manage to get everyone to have fun usually.
Other thing is French-Indian War miniatures in 28mm. Play some Fistful of Lead: Horse and muskets with my battletech group for dessert (BT being main course evidently) when the BT game is quick enough...But they're mostly used to play "muskets and unicorns" (home brewed game) with my family (sometimes even only the kid). It's not quite an...adult's delight, but the kid is fully autonomous. Basically combined all the simplest mechanics of all the FIW compatible rulesets I came about, works like a charm.
To go along with "Muskets and Unicorns", I've started a small heroic-fantasy miniature collection. Its still limited to just a unicorn and an owlbear but I'm planing to add a bit of stuff as soon as possible...
Notably to go along with "The Silver Bayonet". Now its set in 1812, but I just pretend my 1755 clothed soldiers are not the trendy type. I was looking for a good horse and musket era wargame to play solo and frankly, TSB has amazed me. Now the decisional tree for monsters ain't all that great when said monsters (or bandits) have muskets, but everything else is just dainty for a solo game. Also dig the gothic horror theme.
But all this essentially to get to this point which, considering its a BT forum, is the most interesting.
So such is fate that 2 of my core BT players are co-workers. Being unable to gather as often as we would hope to wage tabletop war with big stompy robot, we pondered about plyting at the job (we got a monthly 4 to 6 to drink a few beers and chat...you know, team spirit). That's just dreaming in color, of course, much too complex and lenghty a wargame for that, but then...
Fistful of Lead is a wargame specifically deigned for very casual gameply that offers quick, hollywood like action with an initiative system that keeps everyone involved at all time AND FfoL is a core mechanic for many "themed spin-offs...one of which is for, you guessed it, big stompy robots. FfoL: Battlesuit Alpha. Just might manage a game with 27 'mechs in under 2 hours.
So we went what the hey and started talking about it. Next thing we know, the boss green lights the project (sure! I'll actually be curious to see you play.) and now we got 8 players and a possible ninth. I'll admit I find the thought mouth watering. Picture nearly 30 'mechs on a welding table with L-channels and flat bars for terrain. Friggin' gritty and mecha like. Next week is going to be the big attempt. Besides us 3 BT players, none of our recruits have ever played a wargame. Just one chance for a good first impression.
Well that wraps up my little projects, what other wargaming do you BT wargamers involve time in?
