Is there such a thing as AToW Light?

So I had a moment of inspiration and a hankering to run my regular D&D group through a short Battletech campaign. As a result, I looked through AToW, to see if it would work as a system. Bear in mind, I am an extremely novice GM, this would be my second campaign ever.

Character creation: Interesting, I kinda like it.
Skill check system: More complex than I'd like, but doable.
Map support: Check, though I'd have to fiddle with the recommended scale. Having minis-scale vehicles on the table when appropriate is a hard requirement for me. I work hard on papercraft tanks and APCs, by Ghu they're gonna get used.
Combat: Cheesus Wept, what the hell is that?!? I almost threw my tablet across the room, it was that scary!

Is there such a thing as AToW Light, which keeps most of the system intact, but streamlines combat so that the act of punching or shooting someone can be resolved by a maximum of two die rolls, and throws that madness that is the BAR system completely out the window?

Mechwarrior Destiny is out, due to its massively oversimplified map support. Do I need to look at Mechwarrior 3rd, or earlier?

Victor Shaw is working on a modified version of 2nd Edition that might be to your taste.

I think you've been in the threads where I unabashedly advocate for the BAR system, so I'm sure we have nothing constructive to say to each other on that.

Aside from that, you are literally the first person I've seen say character creation is fine (which I 100% agree with) but COMBAT is too much...  ???

Actual gun combat is pretty simple in AToW but yeah hand to hand and knife fighting can be a bit daunting if you're not really used to it.  I actually have an example of gun damage in AToW linked in my signature that may be helpful for sorting through it as I have expanded on the examples in the book a bit more.

To make those a bit simpler just add the defenders skill in what ever they are using to defend themselves as a modifier to the TN instead of rolling to see if they block/parry.

MW3/CBTRPG actually gets a little more involved.  The defender if they roll well enough can actually hurt the attacker.  Gun damage is determined by rolling dice.
