So I had a moment of inspiration and a hankering to run my regular D&D group through a short Battletech campaign. As a result, I looked through AToW, to see if it would work as a system. Bear in mind, I am an extremely novice GM, this would be my second campaign ever.
Character creation: Interesting, I kinda like it.
Skill check system: More complex than I'd like, but doable.
Map support: Check, though I'd have to fiddle with the recommended scale. Having minis-scale vehicles on the table when appropriate is a hard requirement for me. I work hard on papercraft tanks and APCs, by Ghu they're gonna get used.
Combat: Cheesus Wept, what the hell is that?!? I almost threw my tablet across the room, it was that scary!
Is there such a thing as AToW Light, which keeps most of the system intact, but streamlines combat so that the act of punching or shooting someone can be resolved by a maximum of two die rolls, and throws that madness that is the BAR system completely out the window?
Mechwarrior Destiny is out, due to its massively oversimplified map support. Do I need to look at Mechwarrior 3rd, or earlier?
