Title: Masakari Costume for GenCon '13
Post by: Ion Raptor on 14 December 2012, 19:38:57
Well, time to start getting ready for my first GenCon....8 months away. Having never seen an adult 'Mech costume anywhere I've decided to set a standard. Over the next several months I'll be logging away the creation of what I hope to be a 6-7 foot tall Masakari, modeled after David White's superb Mechwarrior concept art. Moving joints for fluid-ish motion and hopefully lighting (along with fans for cooling the "pilot" of course) will be included, and possibly an opening cockpit if I can figure it out. I present to you the first patterns for the upper and lower legs. 'Ere we go!

Awesome idea man O0.  My only question is: how will you construct the back-canted legs of the Masakari?  I'm interested to see how you approach it so keep us in the loop! [drool]

I can't take credit for the idea, I found this gem online and have just decided to scale the basic design up and add fancy bits to it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX4pXz_awa8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX4pXz_awa8)

David White's Warhawk is nice, but I prefer older Masakari:

It will certainly have elements of the original in it. I'm thinking about making the LRM launcher shoulder mounted like in most of the TROs, and the feet will definitely be more TRO-like since I'll need room on the inside facings to attach my feet.

This sounds like it is going to be epic, although you definitely have your work cut out for you.

"Cut" is definitely going to be the operating word for this little project. I won't want to look at box cutters again after this once I'm done. Have a small update:

Update! I taped everything I had done to the wall and found I was not satisfied with how small the upper legs looked.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e108/IonRaptor/Battletech/Masakari/20121219_170756_zps4ccd6e87.jpg

So I cut out a new, slightly larger area and think it looks much better, yes?

I remember another video I saw where a kid made a Madcat costume.  I don't know if this is the same kid or not, but I wouldn't be surprised.  May I ask "Why the Masakari?"  "Was it the first one you chose, or did you go through different ideas before settling on this one?"  And "How many pounds of Duct Tape do you think it will use?" :D

Three reasons for the Masakari:

1. I really like the Mechwarrior design for it.
2. It's boxy and could easily hold a person's entire upper torso without discomfort.
3. The lower legs are the exact same as a Daishi, so I could make one of those as well with only half of the work involved.

As for the tape, probably 2-3 rolls of it, so not that bad. It's actually a multi-step process I used for my Soundwave costume a few years back. The basic shape is held together with masking tape before having the cracks sealed with hot glue. After that it's wrapped completely in industrial gum-tape. Once that dries it's hard as rock and difficult to accidentally damage.

I am honestly surprised you did not start with the Dire Wolf.  It is a much more iconic design than the lighter Warhawk and seems like it would be easier to fit into with the larger body and higher cockpit placement.

Thought about it, but didn't want to have to deal with the rounded cockpit right off the bat. I'm already racking my brain on how to do the semi-circles on the legs properly.

Well, assuming you could not find something about the right shape to cannibalize, you should still be able to fabricate a wire frame easily enough and then build a shell of some sort over that.  Paper mâché or a similar fabric composite would be fairly easy to work with, and there are plenty of other good options like fiberglass you could use if you wanted something more durable (a combination with a wire frame, paper mâché primary form, and fiberglass outer shell would probably work well).  Cardboard stringers might also work, but they would be more limited than wire because they do not pass each other as well even with notches to fit them together.

I wish I could find it..but I remember there was a young woman who, a couple years ago, did an articulated
Timber Wolf costume for a video gaming convention. Maybe someone here can roosterboy you, Ion Raptor.

I'm the larger type so I can ask this: was he a larger kid and he had a video of it being assembled at his house?  that's the one I remember.

No...it was a rather nice looking young woman. She had trouble with the leg mechanisms breaking down at the con, and had to switch them to stationary, so it ended up looking like it was floating...I know it was posted on these forums, but I do not
know if it was before or after the crash/migration....

It looks to me like they may have been intended to be used for moving the legs which would enplane why they were abandoned and the whole thing wound up floating.

Ion Raptor, any particular paint scheme or faction badging going on this thing?
Title: Re: Masakari Costume for GenCon '13
Post by: Ion Raptor on 27 December 2012, 12:36:28
Haven't thought of any yet. I figured I'd stay away from actual camo schemes since their job is to hide the outline of a figure. I might be a smart-aleck and make a "Pony Pulverizer" badge with a leg stepping on one the tiny horses. Other than that I'm open for suggestions, though I'm leaning more towards a neutral scheme. Too dark and it will hide details, too light and it will be difficult to get good coverage.

A light grey wouldn't hide the highlights and you throw Wolf or Smoke Jaguar emblems on it.
Title: Re: Masakari Costume for GenCon '13
Post by: Ion Raptor on 27 December 2012, 15:54:33
Perhaps Clan Wolf Beta or Kappa Galaxy would be best for that then. Get a bit of color mixed in with a mostly gray scheme. I know I won't be doing Jaguar colors though.

As I remember, that is exactly what happened. They were there for moving the legs, and there ended up some difficulties
midway through the con...

I would start by picking a faction (in my case Clan Ghost Bear), and then picking a parade scheme that will be easy enough to do and colorful enough to be noticed (Beta or Delta Galaxy would work well).

Another option would be to go for broke with the Nova Cat's Xi Galaxy and their psychedelic paint schemes.

As I remember, that is exactly what happened. They were there for moving the legs, and there ended up some difficulties

Heh, called it. ;D

I guarantee that in order to move from room to room it will have to be at least partially disassembled and then reassembled. I took a picture that I'll post up tomorrow properly showing the height. It made me wish I had made it just a bit smaller.....oh well no stopping now!

Here's the ankle joint, not pretty but it will be hidden so who cares. I think I'll go get thin PVC to replace that paper towel roll though, I don't trust it enough to hold the weight.

And put together so far with a bit of help from the family, we had a tough time finding anything tall enough to prop it up. My grandmother there is about 5'7'' so the costume stands at about 5'4'' right now.

Grab the 12 inch model and call it an Elemental phenotype?

It can be no higher then 12 meters. "mechs stand 2 levels tall, and a level is 6 meters, so the Warhawk stands 7 to 12 meters tall.

Not necessarily.  BattleTech tends to be gritty enough that you could probably get away with a more generic military figure.  A fighter pilot would probably be the best although you might have to leave some accessories off to make it work as a MechWarrior, but a generic soldier in camouflage fatigues could also work.  That said, you will probably still want to add some extra accessories and/or patches to help sell the figure as a Clan MechWarrior.

Draw a circuit-board pattern over their face and arms and voila! you have an EI implanted Warrior, as well. But, considering you just
need a cooling vest and combat shorts on a 'Mechwarrior, it should be easily doable...even with a barbie or Ken doll.

1/6 scale GI Joes.  Easiest damn thing ever.

...the hilarity of George Bush in a Masakari is far too much to pass up.  Also, don't forget to look around on ebay and other places; you can probably find an inexpensive, non-collector's one for cheap.

It can be no higher then 12 meters. "mechs stand 2 levels tall, and a level is 6 meters, so the Warhawk stands 7 to 12 meters tall.

Well the old 3050 size chart on clan omnis indicate it's 12.1 meters.

I've been holding off on new pictures while I worked on the cockpit interior and started my next school semester. I think I finally have enough to give you all another update.

Also my pilot figure arrived, his dress has inspired me to go Ghost Bear with this build instead of Clan Wolf. He'll looks perfect after getting rid of the ridiculous "thumbs up" icons" and replacing them with the Ghost Bear emblem and some EI tattoos. Also this guy kind of creeped me out with the amount of articulation and attention to detail (removable shoes? individual toes with toenails? REALLY?).

Any idea if you'll use backlighting or maybe a chaser light in the cockpit?

Another thought, have you thought of a iPod hook up with some Mech sounds like from the video games as ambient sound effects?

I know i'm going to put some LEDsin there. I won't go into any big detail since it's going to be a good 8 feet off the ground, even when I bend at the waist only the tallest people will be able to see down into the cockpit. I did manage to finish the new tats, now he can go insane like any good Clan pilot.

Actually why not put an iphone or something in the cockpit?  It's not so anyone else can see it but for interior lights for the pilot.  Play the Mechwarrior fan-made movie and maybe some other stuff like it, this way you get constantly changing backlighting in the cockpit and flares of light at appropriate times, plus "radio chatter" going on.  Don't make it too loud of course, it's just ambient, but mount the iphone on the floor perhaps or where the cockpit controls would be - this way the pilot's lit up from the "displays" and the onlookers can't see where the light source is coming from.

The problem there is that I've tried having sounds in costumes before and cardboard is a surprisingly good muffler. Not only will no one be able to hear it in the convention center, but I won't be able to hear anything coming from outside.

Then just turn the volume down and use it for lighting displays; it doesn't have to be visible to anyone else - just lighting up your cockpit for the mechwarrior, all of his visual displays.

Now I wonder how hard it would be to take one and set a new wallpaper on it for what looks like a targeting console, and actually mount that IN a cockpit as a "large-size touchscreen multifunction display"

He could just mount old fashion Foam buds outside the suit set at medium speaker volume, higher if needed. Also, would you allow a oneway screen so at least you can see out but hard to see in?

And, this is cool, but could you give your pilot your CBT Callsign painted on the side of the cockpit, just so we can say we say you there?

I've got a place online that sells pretty cheap two way mirrors cut to size. I plan on buying 5 or 6 of those and strategically placing them around at eye level. Good idea with the callsign, consider that on the to-do list.

Tuck a Mini-Maglite at the inside end of each barrel, with the blue lens cover on it, and hook up pressure switches to where your hands are.  Since they'll be at the far end of the tube, you'll get a nice thin cone of light coming out - and it'd look amazing in a slightly dimmed light.

Now that I've finished up my Masters I've started work again. This is the third or fourth time I've done this and hopefully I'll be able to complete it this time. I spray painted the torso down but decided I hated the way the gum tape texture looked when painted. So I bought a metric ton of Craft foam and have been busy cutting it up and placing it along finished components. This should let me have some nice big raised panels and deep panel lines. It should  look more like a miniature in mega form when I'm done plus give it the added benefit of looking a lot smoother.

Since I'm not using the gumtape as a finished surface anymore I don't have to cover the entire thing, just the edges.

I'm basing a lot of the panel details on Pacific Rim and super detailed Gundam models. These lines were lifted directly from the RX-78

The foam also lets me weather it, though I've never done so before. I tested a couple methods out on some scrap pieces and I'm leaning towards the top one (I've also messed around with the dremel to make weapons wounds)

The doors will move for me or be destroyed. In all honesty it will have to be partially disassembled and carried through doors. I don't even know how I'm going to transport it in the first place. Anything less than a large van won't be enough.

Well here it is, just a little taste of what's to come. Yeah I know Tau didn't participate in the invasion of Thule, but it didn't work with the Mechwarrior 4 opening any other way so I fudged it a bit. Looks like I'll be at Gencon all 4 days (5 days actually since I'll be there helping Northstar Games) So plenty of time to see this in person for anyone planning on attending. I'm starting to wonder if the Tesla pods guys would be interested in having this set up near them to draw crowds, not sure how much time I'll be able to spend inside the costume, most certainly not all 4 days.

I'm guessing it will total around 35 pounds, mostly in the legs since the torso is pretty well hollow.

Now we're chugging along. I've spent the day trying to figure out how i'm going to get my torso movement how I want it. I'm an artist first and foremost so of course I decided to build the thing first and figure out how it was going to work later. Going to try and have a cylinder around my torso to keep it in place and give it an axis to spin on. The other problem is that because of the height, my upper torso is connected to the costume's lower torso. Which means that in order to torso twist i'll have to able to move my arms while keep my torso straight. It's gonna be fun.....

Suspenders on the torso ring with the upper part free weighted on it. Like a pair of waders one would wear to fishing trips. You brace the upper part with the suspenders, using your arms as free movement. The lower would be attached to your upper thighs and such.

Hope this might help a little...

Still pretty awesome.  Will it be done in time, though?

My criticism is simple though:  The PPC barrels.  You went MW$ version with the top one on the inside!  It looks so much better the other way!

Post by: Ion Raptor on 31 July 2014, 22:36:36
I'm working over time on the costume. I spent from 8am to 10:30 pm today downstairs working on it. It must be done, no two ways about it! Too many people looking forward to seeing it to fail now.

I've gotten to hate the whole MW4 set of arms, I absolutely should have done the Battletech version. The blasted angled arms make me rip my hair out  :)) I must have half a bottle of gorilla glue spread between the two arm joints alone. Thank the stars for that stuff, without it this costume would be nearly impossible.

My Overlord captain is currently trying to figure out the best way to strap it down into the truck (and hope it doesn't rain on the drive in) so we can get this monster to the ball on time

All together it weighs somewhere between 35 and 40 pounds, with probably 25 of that resting on my shoulders. If I've learned anything its that this costume works much better as a prop than as an actual wearable costume. Several people didn't believe that it could be worn until I showed them the pictures of me in it. If another costume were to ever be done it would be a much less bulky light mech. Of course should Catalyst ever find themselves in need of someone to make them a massive prop I'd be happy to do so with better materials  :))

Title: Re: Masakari Costume for GenCon '13
Post by: Ion Raptor on 18 August 2014, 18:56:08
No video so far. The costume was too big to go up on stage so they had to place me down on the floor level, preventing most from getting a good look at the lower torso. For as big as it is it's definitely light, it's just the awkwardness that was inherent in its creation that prevents it from being mobile for very long. Given a couple weeks I could probably solve that problem but I think "The Beast" will remain on its support structure from now on.

Make sure you include a Battletech decal somewhere were people can see it, otherwise they mas assume it is a Metroid's Samas.

Good luck on it, are you going to have a working mech-scale weapon that makes sound and light?

A reporter for the local paper took notice of the costume and did a little interview of me. Little did I know that it would be a large column, and front page to boot. He did a good job too, the only thing off is the part about Battletech being one of the oldest wargames in the States. One of the longest lasting certainly, but definitely not one of the oldest.

Two years late, but I have a quick movie with the suit moving. A whole four steps!

Very very awesome!  Turning in it must have been 'fun' as you'd have to shuffle round right?

If I could have I would have just done the Mechwarrior 4 thing and stomped my feet up and down turning bit at a time. Unfortunately the feet are just too heavy to do much more the shuffle around. As of this video the costume is retired completely to sit the rest of its days on the display stand.

Perhaps one day I'll use what I learned to make a smaller, lighter mech costume.

I kept thinking you were going be able to make a Inner Sphere costume, say a BattleMaster.  Be able to go to GenCon stage a mock fight between each other.  ^-^

Thank you for putting up the video for us!

I know this sounds morbid, but you should put it in your Next-of-Kin will, with a please don't destroy museum quality piece.

Or if you can find one, a place for permanent public display. Along with the newspaper clippings, your award and whatnots. " See kids, while this is make-believe to you, I played this game when your parents where your age! "

( Missed your show, walked by the hall where they held it too.  :-[ )
