Rosebud Battle Armor Transport
« on: 04 October 2018, 12:29:14 »
3075 era fast hover transport for thoughts, opinions, and constructive input.

(Designed by Kane Industries, the Rosebud was developed from the company's fast transport hover sled to get Battle Armor to a designated point and get out of harms way as fast as possible. Although fitted with vehicular stealth armor and an ECM system the Rosebud is little more than a fast, lightly armored hover truck with a refitted flatbed equipped to carry Battle Armor. It has one job - Get Battle Armor onto the field quickly!)

Is it bad I feel like this is way over-armored? 6 tons seems like a lot for a 25-ton vee, especially with stealth and speed already. Can you get this to 20 tons or less with half that?

More importantly vehicular stealth armor is treated as an energy weapon, so you need 10 SHS for it (i.e. a fusion engine...).

It seems to work at 20 tons with 3 tons of armor, a speed bump to 9/14, and a fusion engine. Also ends up cheaper, somehow, at least according to SAW.

Didn't know the details about the Vehicular Stealth Armor, since I hadn't used it before. Good to know now. I just imagined this as a flatbed hover truck with welded on handrails, stealth armor, and an ECM jammer that comes skidding in at high speed, drops of it's payload, and bolts for safer regions ASAP...

On a side note, it's kind of funny to hear comments about REDUCING armor since it's usually the other way around and obsessive optimizers are usually griping that I hadn't maxed everything out to the fullest extent of the rules LOL

With Vehicles it's a little different because a lot of armor isn't necessarily going to protect you. Vehicles are so prone to critical that in my experience loading up on armor has a limited value.

developed from the company's fast transport hover sled

I see what you did there.  8)
"That's Lieutenant Faceplant to you, Corporal!"

Things that I have learnt through clicking too fast on 'Move Done' on MegaMek: Double-check the CF of the building before jumping onto it, check artillery arrival times before standing in the neighbouring hex, and don't run across your own minefield.

"Hmm, I wonder if I can turn this into a MM map."

In our current 3075 campaign, not everyone has easy access to an Omnimech to transport Battle Armor. A fast hover sled designed to carry a few could be a cheap and handy alternative.

Omnimech not required: An omni-vehicle can do the same BA-carrying ability and works for that just fine, and way cheaper and presumably easier to manufacture than other 'mechs or even conventional transports since they don't have to dedicate so much space for anything.  If you're developing a new machine with the sole purpose of getting BA on the field, very light omni-vehicles is a valid way to fulfill that.

For example, here's a super light, super cheap BA "jeep" transport:
Code: [Select]
Roadrunner BA Taxi (Standard)
Base Tech Level: Standard (IS)

Weight: 3 tons
BV: 60
Cost: 24,423 C-bills

Movement: 15/23 (Wheeled)
Engine: 25 ICE

Internal: 4
Armor: 16
Internal Armor
Front 1 5
Right 1 4
Left 1 4
Rear 1 3

Carrying Capacity
One battle armor squad

The one major advantage of using a vehicle to transport Battle Armor using a vehicle vs an Omni is that a vehicle (especially a hover) is going to the  SIAC* to the battlefield much faster.

Short of the technical error, I appreciate the first versions Armor rating and I'm sure the Battle Armor troops would as well.

That being said: my personal preference is always for at least one weapon on everything, but everyone loves a good fast APC.

6 Tons seems an odd size for transport capacity.....  What are you looking to move?
