Kerensky's Hound - The Fall of Arc-Royal
« on: 02 May 2019, 21:31:28 »
Hello everyone.
I've decided to try my hand at some battletech fan-fiction again.  I failed at a previous attempt but I think it laid the groundwork for the current story running around my head.  Both are based on the Fall of Arc-Royal to the Falcons and the aftermath.  With the new information in Shattered Fortress my original idea from a few years ago doesn't fit as well.  But I liked some of the characters so I decided to reuse them as I build something to fit what we do know.

I've aimed for something canon accurate that could, theoretically, have been submitted for attempted publication.  I only briefly had delusions as to my own ability, or Catalysts willingness to entertain an unsolicited work.  Given the realities of actual commissioned and planned works and the fact that I will have to stray too close to some of the mysteries related to the Exile wolves and Shattered Fortress, I figure this board is the only way this sees the light of day.  I am of the opinion that the written word should be shared even while I enjoy it for my own entertainment and development, so here we are.

I will start with the first two chapters as a hopefully effective hook.  I've got one more in my hip pocket and an outline that should net the equivalent of a full length novel.  I intend to keep motivated and keep at it to completion with regular posting of updates.  I'm already further this time than my last attempt so we shall see  ;)

Synopsis:  As possibly the last Ristar to come out of the Arc-Royal Sibkos, will Lana survive the fall of her home world?  Lana finds herself thrust into a situation demanding that she live up to the legacy set by her ancestors or die trying.  But, what if there is a different path those in power have earmarked her for?  Would Lana be willing to give up all chance of glory, remembrance, immortality,or honor to put the needs of the Clan before her own?

UPDATE:  Well took a very long break.  Trying to ease back in with part 1 of Chapter 19.  Will see where this goes.

Erwin, that senior NCO that Lana going to need if she rise to the top, if only she will listen to him

That is actually a good way to put it.  I was trying to see what it might be like if the clans kept some of the experience around rather than shuffle it all off to die.  While keeping at least some of the ageist bias.

I think I may need to showcase the clan bit some more as well.  My personal vision of the dark ages warden wolves plays up the "gone native" aspect.  Few issues with contractions save the most formal rituals.  A bit more breadth to Sibko training with some time spent at the Kell Hounds academy.  They keep the Clan organization structure but fight more like spheroids.  They don't even consider Zellbringen unless they can get an advantage out of it.

Erwin is looking out for Lana keeping her from making dumb mistakes.

I would love to hear his backstory

Have no fear you get some of it in Chapter 4.

I must admit that while Lana is the intended protagonist, I've rather enjoyed writing Erwin.  When I eventually finish this I may have to look at telling the story of his past.

Well I missed last Friday, but I find myself writing again.  If my freetime stays available I should have another chapter posted soon.  If I can swing it I will aim for two by the end of the week.

Bad news is I will be away from a computer I can post from the following week.  So there will be another gap.  I should have plenty of time on the plane to write a chapter or two so I will try and post multiple when I return.

I promise I haven't abandoned the effort.

I haven't paid much attention to the current timeline, but since when do Clan warriors use contractions?

They usually do not not use them.

Are the exiled wolves still clan after close to a century living on Arc-Royal?  How much cultural drift has happened?

I’ve tried to be mindful about specific individuals who use them and those who do not.  As well as the specific state of mind of the individual at the time.  I may not have caught all of it, and freely admit it is more of a personal take on the exiles.  If anything I would use a final editing pass to specifically emphasize those who cling closer to the clan ways and those who play a little loose.
