Miniatures of the Fortnight #77: Griffin and Super Griffin
« on: 09 September 2019, 21:36:31 »
This fortnight, we look at the last, but not least, of the 55-ton trio, the Griffin, favored 'Mech of House Steiner (or, at least, for displays in the throne room).  Like its comrades in tonnage, the Shadow Hawk and Wolverine, it has been with us since the good old days and, like the Shadow Hawk, all the way back to Battledroids.  Of course, like every other 'Mech from that era, it suffered from the Unseen-Reseen brouhaha and, like some, has come back better than ever in a plastic Classic sculpt.

If you'd like to know more about its history or how to use it in the game, please see Kotetsu's 'Mech of the Week article.  If you'd like to know more about the miniatures through the years, stick around and keep reading.

The Griffin has had a number of sculpts through the years:
  • The first version was a Battledroids sculpt (20-835).
  • That was replaced with the standard Unseen sculpt, released in metal (also 20-835) and resin.
  • FASA released a plastic version with the BattleTech, Third Edition boxed set, based on the Unseen sculpt.
  • The next sculpt, and the oldest one still in production, is for the Reseen Griffin GRF-6S (20-200).
  • A slightly modified version, for the custom Francine variant appears in the Black Widow Company Lance set for Starterbook: Wolf and Blake (10-035).
  • Then came the Primitive sculpt for the Griffin GRF-1A (BT-346).
  • The most recent sculpt is the Classic sculpt from the modern Beginners Box from CGL.
First appearing in Tales of the Black Widow, tinkering Davion enginners gave us the Super Griffin prototype.  IWM has released two versions:So let's hear it for an old friend and post those pictures of Griffins, Unseen, Reseen, Primitive, and Classic!  We'd all love to see them!

Thank you for reading and a special thank you to those who post!

Our next two fortnights will be:
  • Clan (9/23): Invading Clans: Ghost Bear Edition (Grizzly and Kodiak, with special guest Kodiak II)
  • Mixed (10/7): Ostscout and Ostsol

I have a single painted Griffin, a Reseen GRF-6S standing in for a GRF-1N, in Marik Militia colors.

A Francine variant using magnets to resemble both, the basic -6S and the personalised Francise version.
Colors stand in for a Lyran Regular unit.
Picture 1.1 shows it in Francine configuration.
Picture 1.2 shows it in -6S configuration.

Let's see what all I got, here.

I have a copy of the new one I painted up for my sis.

I do have duplicates of the Vintage and Classic above in reposes, as well as a Project Phoenix one, but they're not done yet. So, pending.

That leaves me with my MicroMech Kitbashes.  Had to do the Griffin early because my PoV story character witnessing my Plainswalker character is in a Griffin. Next to the Whammy and Thud, the Griffin was one of my favorite beginner designs. Maybe it was that PPC.

I made 4. I plan on making a 5th, because I want my custom Merc units to be separate from the stock ones I use as proxies at scale.

Casey's I made to fit the BT Ral Partha Sculpt. That was his original personal scheme I had in mind for him, but I'm thinking of changing it to mostly match the Stranger's Business mercenary group's general advised scheme.  And, I think Casey wouldn't want to advertise where he's from because he doesn't want to be found readily.

The other three were done in their anime forms and colors. One is gonna change, along with the potential 5th.

The Griffin is my third most painted 'Mech, but almost everything was done back in the early 90's...

Kurita - 2nd An Ting Legion

When I started painting again in 2007-08, I gave these a bit of an update. I switched to Kanji numbers and the second two became test units for jeweling cockpits (which used to look like the first one before that)

Davion - Sakhara Military Academy

Periphery - Taurian Concordat - Concordat Commandos

Marik - 3rd Oriente Hussars

Steiner - 23rd Arcturan Guards

Caz

Edit: If anyone ever has wondered why I repose almost every mini I paint, this post alone should be all the explanation needed...

Primitive, and some original release GRF-1N, GRF-1S, and 2 customs, one being a Korchima Special and a Shadow Griffin. (No relation to the one mentioned as part of Clan Wolverine.)

One of only a few mechs that I actually own more than one sculpt for...
(From left to right)
-my mercenary command (paintscheme shamelessly stolen from the 1st robinson rangers)

-7th Crucis Lancers/Fox's Teeth company, Lt. Kate Nomura's mech

-Wolfs Dragoons, Alpha Regiment, 1st Battalion, 4th Provisional Company/"Black Widow" Company

- Red Duke's personal guard (beginner box poster mech scheme)

-Generic Lyran Guard

-generic pirate/mercenary
