Opportunity Raids
« on: 18 July 2011, 22:09:50 »
Just wondering what raids on a planet you have launched to accomplish your overall mission on a planet?

Some of my upcoming . . .

Rescue political prisoners- sent to back a rebellion to keep a dangerous neighbor in the Chaos March busy, the command team gets some intel on a prison holding political prisoners.  Has to be a quick strike to get in, free as many prisoners as possible, and leave the area before a response force arrives.

Pirate Broadcast-  Sneak into a distant broadcasting retransmitter or satelite uplink site.  Blast your own propaganda for the rebels over the airwaves.  Fight off the quick reaction force for longer broadcast times, then retreat with your forces and the rebel auxiliaries.

Power of the HPG-  Cut the external power to the HPG station so the tyrant cannot communicate with his raiding forces that are off planet.  After all keeping a battalion or two of mechs from landing on your head could be useful.

Armor Smash-  Intel reveals a site that refits medium and light armor as well as arms some IndustrialMechs for riot/suppression duty.  A battalion of armor is assembling and being trained.  Take out the refit/repair facilities, neutralize as many of the operational tanks and crews as possible, neutralize the training cadre, and of course salvage whatever you can.

Junction-  Hit a transportation hub, destroying railway, road, and bridges to cut off supplies to forward units that are hunting rebels and the rebel support base.

Any interesting hooks you might throw in?

I need to look back through the Jihad books to find more raid or raid adjustable scenarios.

ComStar's HPG stations have their own fusion plants, located inside the same bunker as the HPG itself.  This means that you might be annoying the technicians but not much else unless you're willing to go in and blow the whole compound.

I do not know about raids but I have game mastered the following missions:

Create a bridgehead - I actually gave the players the supplies to make bridges.  They achieved a major victory points if they realized that they were allowed to make more then one bridge.  (They actually added guard rails that prevented a mech from falling into the river.)

Attack and drive off or destroy two Nagas that were firing Arrow IV missiles at a staging area.

Eliminate a particular mechwarrior

Escort a convoy moving supplies from point A to point B

Engage the defenders to allow a recon unit to return to your side.  The opfor is on the north side of the field, you are on south side of the field, at a certain point in the game, a Pegasus hovercraft enters from the north side of the field and attempts to leave the gameboard on the southside of the field.  (Maybe use a Rotunda as this might require the recon unit to utilize a bridge or something.

Attack an airfiield to destroy enemy aerospace assets on the ground.

Sabotage an oil pipline by destroying a pumping station first.  (Allowing the automatic fail safes to activate, thereby preventing or reducing an environmental and public relations disaster.)

Seize a hill, bridge, city, etc

Prevent the enemy from destroying a bridge, etc.  (Clan elementals were setting explosive charges on the bridge, each elemental would set one point of explosive per turn.  (Two stars of elementals would set 50 points of charges on the bridge per turn.  The Inner Sphere had to attack the elementals before 200 points of explosives were placed.)

Run to a dropship that was going to blast off shortly.

Locate and destroy a Mobile HQ in a city or some other environment that your sensors might not be successful in detecting unless you got real close.

Examples only

Depending of era.

A Tech grab, either steal some lost tech, or destroy  it.  Or a stright up parts raid  (Pre 3050's)

Destroying Ground based defense systems (AA, Radar, other sensor systems) to make way for a larger force.

A Body snatch.  Recover, or liberate a Key target.  Hard part is keeping the locales busy while your raid team (Infantry unit) enters a building to get the target

there are so many possible scenarios, Just remebers raids are a quick get in get out, fast and dirty type of deal, not a protracted battle.  But It can be a fun game if your raid forces, does get caught up in a battle.

Headhunting- a damaged unit has been rotated to the planet for repairs.  Go in and try to finish them off before the repairs are complete, or at least bust their supplies up to slow them down.
