Title: Non-strafing Heavy Fighter?
Post by: Goose on 10 September 2019, 23:40:14
What's good for running around in the atmo, and damaging the things you find there?

Everything that comes to me, off the top of my head, seems to be built for strafing, which here-tell Is Bad For Business. And yet everything big is built around quad-large lasers …

Is there nothing that can both bomb-truck and strike?

Lasers can strike just fine. And to bomb, you simply need to be a ASF. The fighters that are better than average at bombing are the ones with bigger engines, because ceding bombs slows you down. A Stuka or Riever carrying fifteen bombs is reduced to 2/3, but an Eisensturm with that load is a 3/5, and a Hammerhead is a 4/6.

As far as striking, all you need to do is be able to deliver the boom in one salvo. It doesn't matter if said boom is delivered via photons, lead, or missiles...boom is boom.

Hammerhead: 75 tons, 7/11 thrust, AC/20 for armament.

This seems almost special built for strike missions, but lacks some potential punch of other designs to concentrate the damage.
