==Overview:==
The Madigan is a dedicated scout and infantry transport, using its
considerable straight-line speed and vertical takeoff ability to
monitor and outmaneuver enemy ground forces and drop entire
platoons of 'naked' infantry or squads of battlesuited troopers
where they can do the most good. As a direct combat unit, it is a
failure, lacking either significant armor or sufficient weaponry to
threaten anything more dangerous than a lone infantryman, but
as an informational and logistical asset, its speed and cargo
capacity make it a valuable asset to any groundside force.
Physically, the Madigan carries its engine integrated into the root
of the high wings, where they meet the fuselage, and powers its
wingtip rotor pods by shaft drive. Unlike most tilt-rotor VTOLs,
the Madigan's pair-mounted counter-rotating rotor assemblies are
small enough in diameter to permit a fully rolling airfield takeoff.
==Capabilities:==
Lightly armored and even more lightly armed, the Madigan's sole
defense is its speed and, where applicable, the six armored
infantrymen its internal bay is designed to carry. A full squad can
easily be dropped on the wing, though slipstream issues require
slowing to 120 kph for drop operation.
==Variants:==
The Madigan has three factory-issued variants, two of which
replace the cargo bay with additional weapons systems, a Long
Range Missile five-pack and a Short-Range Missile four-pack,
respectively, and the last of which fills it with extensive and
sophisticated communication, command, and control equipment,
turning the light transport into the ideal command vehicle for a
company-sized formation.
==Deployment:==
While offered for sale on the general market, the Madigan's
higher price tag compared to internal-combustion powered VTOL
designs makes it unpopular among mercenary formations other
than that belonging to the corporation that owns manufacturer
Harrier Armaments Corporation, and the location of Harrier's two
production plants on Westerstede and New Valencia mean that
most of those units bought find their way into the service of the
AFFC.
