Beginner Box - Steiner vs Kurita
« on: 07 July 2019, 18:46:13 »
So I got my hands on both a beginner box set and A Game of Armored Combat when they came back in stock.  They look nice on the shelf next to my Third and fourth edition boxes  ;)

Wife decided to indulge me and played the quick start rules.  Decided she enjoyed it enough that she will play again.  But that's not all, the oldest daughter watched the game and I think I will have her hooked.....I mean enjoying a game next.

Figured the best way to celebrate and keep the momentum going was to break out the paints.  The only appropriate scheme for the Griffin was some sort of Steiner blue, clearly.  The eldest was all over the idea of Space Samurai, so we get a Wolverine in red for the opfor.  Works out nicely as I split the 10 mechs into 2 groups and intend to paint one group up as 7th Donegal Guard, and the other as 2nd Sword of Light.

Tabletop ready now, likely to go back and embellished as a get some ideas and hit a grove with them.

Great paint jobs, and even better work getting your wife and daughter into the game!

Color me extremely jealous, as I utterly failed to interest either my wife or ANY of my children...  :'(

I have been extremely fortunate since both my wife and I are old school gamers, and our children have followed suit.  The most difficult question is usually settling on something to play.

We all play a little Pathfinder/D&D, but BattleTech was beyond my ability to get them into...

Steiner Griffin has been joined by a Lance of heavy metal.  Added color to the shoulders for some extra detail and used a different color and light drybrushing (only the edges).
Hit all of them with a heavier wash as well.

Now to decide how I want to base them.  Any thoughts?  I have green flock, some taller grass, sand, and some model train ballast for rocks/boulders/rubble.

If you can do snow, I think that would look awesome under that paint scheme...

Good Call.  I will have to find me some snow.

Close-up for the Battlemaster and T-Bolt.
Wishing I had done the Battlemasters cockpit jeweling line a little off center.  Oh well.

That looks AWESOME!

And the jeweling on the Battlemaster just means it was facing the light a little differently... :)

If you have a Games Workshop store in your area or a store that carries their paint range then you might want to check out their Blizzard texture paint. Makes doing snow bases quick and easy. Also makes it easy to add snow to your mechs as well.

Got around to finishing the Kurita half of the setup.
Not going to win any awards but I won't feel bad having them hit the table to teach with.

If I do anything else it will probably be another wash to try and outline the recesses and panels better.

Those look very nice as is... I wouldn't say no to the wash, but those would look fantastic on the table...

Soooo...I ended up doing more than the wash.  Heavier wash, drybrush of base red to lighten it back up, then a drybrush of a lighter red for the edges.

If anything I think this proves to me I need a decent lightbox for pictures not just the lamp where I paint.  As well as something better than a phone camera.

Well done sir!  8)  That second round of wash and drybrushing did them justice.  Now find a Davion command and blow those Dracs into smithereens! :D
