Mass of internal structure sections
« on: 24 July 2020, 02:03:24 »
Hi all,

Are there any rules determining the mass for individual internal structure sections? I'm interested in it for transport & storage reasons.

StratOps puts costs of these at 10% of internal structure + myomer costs for a chassis, but says nothing about how much they weigh. Couldn't see anything in TechManual about it either.

In lieu of official rules, was thinking of something like a fraction of total internal structure mass based on how many points the section has?

Code: [Select]
section mass = (internal structure mass) * (section internal structure points) / (total internal structure points)
But this means comes out as non-even number of tons, and has some odd side-effects, such as the mass of the head goes down for larger mechs despite having the same number of points, and there's a difference for all sections in biped vs quads as well due to the extra points quads have in their front legs.

Any pointers/better suggestions?

For mechs at least, look in TacOps: Advanced Rules, under Picking Up Inanimate Objects. That bit has rules for calculating the mass of a mech limb, for lifting(and throwing) purposes.

You might also look for the rules of Franken Mechs.

I'm not sure, but, I thought they had something about averaging weights or something like that.

Another option that might be in there, but if not, I'm thinking it would work, would be to take the total IS points & the IS points of the location as a % of total & then use that % from total IS weight.

So a 20 ton Locust has 3+3+3+4+4+5+5+6 = 33 IS Points.   For 2 tons of IS weight.

Based on that....
Head/Arms = .182 Tons Each
Legs = .242 Tons Each
Side Torso = .303 Tons Each
Center Torso = .364 Tons

If you wanted to maybe keep the torso/head all in 1 section & just disconnect the arms/legs at the shoulder/hips, then your looking at 1.152 tons for the "limbless-body" as a single piece.

Thanks both for these pointers. Both state that limbs are 10%, and FrankenMechs in StratOps gives figures for the other components. Cheers!

Yup, that's the formula in the OP :)

It occurred to me after the fact but I'm betting the 3 points for the head isn't even in the IS costs.
Its probably all included in the Cockpit tonnage.

Yeah, possibly - StratOps (IIRC) says you can't buy head sections without a cockpit (whereas e.g. arms come with structure and musculature only - no actuators), so presumably the cockpit is somewhat integral. You do pay 3t for the cockpit though during construction in addition to IS costs though.
