Gaslands?
« on: 24 July 2018, 14:59:12 »
Has anybody tried this game out? A buddy of mine ordered the rulebook recently, and while I haven't looked at it yet, it looks really interesting. (And odd, given that he's not a minis guy.) The premise is that it's a post-apocalyptic car combat game, played using die-cast toy cars kitbashed into Mad Maxian monstrosities, with your imagination being the limit.

I don't even know the rules yet, and I'm already pondering a Toyotapocalypse, as well as wondering how hard it'll be to find a Wienermobile without going online... >:D

Hotwheels brand, about $16-$21 from Amazon, depending on seller. (including shipping).

I'm eyeing this one.  It could give me a chance to get my old Krash cars back on the table!

Looks like it uses movement templates like wings of war or, better known, X-wing.

I picked up the rule book and a ton of hotwheels to chop up. I am hoping to try it out after Gencon.

Is this the new Osprey ruleset?

EDIT: Never mind. One minute of Google due diligence later, it is.

Not without tweaking scale. Car Wars will be HO-scale.

Hmm. The sheer inexpensiveness of the minis was one of the things that got me interested in Gaslands. $2.50 or so, and apparently I've already got what I need for an intro force.

Do we have an ETA on the new Car Wars? I backed the Kickstarter (for the arenas) several years back because SJ Games said it would help mainly the new Car Wars. But I'm still waiting :/

No firm date yet, but SJ really wants to get it out the door. From what I understand, the rules are done and it's just ironing out the production details now.

Haven't played a game yet, but I gotta say, kitbashing these things is FUN. I'm largely done with a 1970 Camaro covered in spikes, corrugated steel armor plating, and a HMG out the passenger windshield, and I'm already gluing Mad Cat II-E arms onto a pickup truck, turning it into a flame truck along the lines of a Flammpanzerwagen. :)

Funny, I just watched Adam Savage talking about old school ILM kitbashing and the "universal greeblie" piece from a Leopold railway gun kit from Hasegawa. It's the wheel cap for the brakes on the rail-car's wheel trucks. And it's so generally defined, it's been used darn near everywhere. Almost to a Wilhelm Scream degree. Your kitbashing reminds me of that.

Anyhow, sorry. Continue!

For those that have dug into the rule book, how specific are the rules for customizing cars? Like is it WYSIWYG, or can you just throw together a cool looking kit bash and have at it?

The construction rules are fairly specific, but very fast(if you have the cheat sheet handy, you can stat out a car in about thirty seconds, and it won't take more than a minute to write those stats down on a record card). There is no WYSIWYG requirement whatsoever, so you can bash your car however you like and let the stats show something very different, or even play with unmodified cars if you don't yet know what you want to do with a given car.

There are scale suggestions, saying that vehicles of a given category should ideally be at least X long and Y wide, but that's about it. It makes sense, since the template-based movement and firing arcs mean that using a car that is a much smaller scale could give you a notable maneuverability advantage, and larger models will find themselves moving farther over time. Even then, those suggestions are just that - suggestions, and there's loads of leeway in them, too.

Not really familiar with that, so I can't say.

The Camaro is getting primed, but here's the largely assembled pickup. All that really remains is to give it a ramming prow(planning to use one of the attachments from my beard trimmer that I never use), and put some fuel tanks and hoses for the flamethrowers in the bed.

Not really familiar with that, so I can't say.

It was a game that Activision put out using the same game engine as Mechwarrior 2.  It was set in an alternate version of the 70s where the fuel crisis led to large sections of the country becoming lawless, with criminal gangss in heavily armed cars fighting lone vigilante drivers.

By the way, Phil Reed - CEO at Steve Jackson Games - has said that they plan on doing reproductions of the classic Steve Jackson pocket box games. It'll be a while before we see them in stores, but the Chinese factory produced a perfect copy of Truck Stop. So soon we will be spoiled for choice when it comes to car combat games. :)

Couple realizations:

First off the terrain templates included in the Alpha Strike QSR pdf are perfect for Gaslands terrain, especially if you print out the water page in black and white to simulate streams and pools of polluted industrial sludge.

Secondly, as a game system Gaslands seems perfect for playing out the Dead Zone Runs from TtS: Manassas. :)

Hey Weirdo, did you ever get any of the old Flash Force 2000 stuff released back in 1984? Seems like they might work for this (the cars anyways, not so sure about the big vehicles) as the FF2K stuff was by Matchbox, and they already have guns mounted...
