I second the island archipelago. Actually, if I could, I'd ask for a real river map if you're up for it.

That's very nice work, you always pick very good location. You are the county GIS guy? Did you use Arcview for those? Also, you ever print those without the hexes so you can just use mini rules and the contours? It's a shame to clutter up such a nice image with all the hexes and numbers.

Iceland has some interesting terrain that would make a nice map if you can get good imagery.

I'm the GIS monkey around here, unless MapMaster is also one. I'd use Arcmap to make my own, but my only aerial imagery I have access to is of pretty boring scenery, and not very conducive to hex-angled maps.

Move to Texas, and I'll put in a good word for you. :)

I'll move to Texas! I could use the job!!!!

As for the map, its nice, but talk about a map I would not want to play on much! The amount of forest makes it look damn near impossible to fight on! ;D Yes, I am partially joking over here! I would like to see a review of it being played on though.

I know the above might sound negative, but it does seem a lot more of a forest map then past, official, maps have given us. I would like to see how a map of L.A. or any other large city would look like on a BT map.

let answer those questions...

no.
no.
no, BUT I have a guy right now that's asking me for a map with no markups on it for a WWII aerial fighting game. it's not that hard to do. the existing maps could easily be altered to remove the contours and markings. just PM if you have any specific requests.

i'm almost finished with the archipelago map now and you all should be seeing all the new ones on ebay in the very near future.

what's the meters/pixel ratio in your arcmap images? i could really use some new material, even if it's boring. surely you have some good clusters of trees or a gulch or something. those are things that could be used.

Those all look nice. One nitpick, and this is from a purely ease-of-use perspective: I wish the hex-grid were in white or light gray. Same with hex labels. This way I can see the hexes and what they're supposed to be. I play in a friend's basement more often than not, so poor lighting is a fairly common event. This is a complaint we have about a lot of the old standard maps, too. With a colorized background and artwork, it's hard to read black on anything but really light colors.

No clue, actually. It's kind of moot. Being county property, I doubt I'd be allowed to give those images to you.

It is awesome seeing some hexes on places on earth. When you put mini's on that map, it makes the battle seem more real to me.

I also work for a GIS firm, though I'm a software engineer and not a GIS guy. I should totally grab the aerial photography for my town and turn it into a hex map, maybe that'll get more of my friends playing when they can blow up each others' houses.

For most basic sea units, yes: Depth 1. Any submarine wanting to submerge would have to be one level above the bottom of the water, so Depth 2+ for subs.

This is what a river-mouth map should look like.

There are still places where the hex grid, itself, blends in with the terrain. White or light gray boarders would be perfect on this map. Otherwise, this is beautiful.

Looks cool. Literally. 'Mech is hot? Take a swim, there's water everywhere.

Reminds me of the game where my unit spent most of its time underwater because I kept failing PSRs on underwater elevation changes so it took me forever to get out.

Actually, you probably can.  Have him fill out the Texas equivalent of a FOIA request.  I doubt there's reason for classifying the maps.  Where I live, Loudoun County, VA gives away GIS data for the cost of compiling it: http://www.loudoun.gov/FAQ.aspx?QID=350  "Owned by the County" actually means "Held in the public trust by the County" in the vast majority of cases.

I do some local politics, this stuff is my other hobby.

Addendum: USGS provides maps in digital form for free: http://store.usgs.gov/b2c_usgs/usgs/maplocator/%28ctype=areaDetails&xcm=r3standardpitrex_prd&carea=%24ROOT&layout=6_1_61_48&uiarea=2%29/.do

Addendum 2: Tarrant County has a really nice map viewer, btw.  Makes me jealous.

I think you've forgotten the height/depth numbers on the hexes again, and not all hexes have co-ords from what I an see

Not necessarily. Look at the contour lines, and find one hex inside those contour lines that has the depth/height you seek.

That's what some of the really old BT maps did.
