(Answered) Cargo Containers
« on: 02 June 2023, 12:19:47 »
Page 239 of the sixth printing of TechManual says that Cargo Containers contribute 10 tons of cargo capacity. Page 220 of the third printing of Campaign Operations says that they are five times as fast to move as break-bulk cargo.

Is there any reason not to use cargo containers over cargo bays? Are there any limitations to them that standard bays don't have? Specifically:

  • With enough cargo containers, can items larger than 10 tons (mothballed units, capital weapons, etc.) be stored, presumably after being disassembled for shipping?
  • Does the movement bonus for cargo containers only apply if both the source and destination are using cargo containers?
  • Do you have to devote time to unloading cargo containers into standard cargo bays before using things in them (such as food)?
  • Are all cargo containers assumed to be swapped for empty containers when loaded onto another unit? Or do you have to keep track of whether a cargo container is missing rather than just empty?
  • Can units such as industrial exoskeletons with lift hoists move cargo containers? One person in a suit may not have 10 tons of carry capacity: does that mean their bonus doesn't apply at all? If so, what about a team of such suits working in concert?
  • Does the movement bonus from cargo containers apply even if only some of the contents are being moved?

1: Only if they can be disassembled to individual components that are less than 10 tons.
2: Both source and destination.
3: Yes.
4: You'd have to keep track of empties, but this is not likely to be worth your administrative time.
5: No, only if they're unloading the container.
6: Yes.

Building on #3, does this mean that a tech team could not use supplies directly from a Bishop in the field, as no standard cargo bay would be present?

Building on #4, how much would an empty cargo container cost? How would you get more, such as if you wanted to reconfigure an OmniVehicle to hold some?
