The one thing you're ridiculously good at...
« on: 16 July 2012, 22:04:50 »
I have something of a reputation in my group for never failing my Pilot Skill checks.  I can almost always keep a mech upright except in the most dire of situations.  I'm also pretty darn good at keeping my pilot awake and conscious (I can always get box cars on that but never for damage...).

So, what are you ridiculously good at?  Long shots? DFA's? Crits?

Indirect fire. My Archers can pummel enemy forces to smithereens from behind hills like nobody's business.

Direct shots with ER Medium Lasers.
I don't know why.
It's not about winning or losing, no it's all about how many chapters have you added to the rule books after your crazy antics.

I'm pretty good at pulling ridiculous wins in hopeless situation (i.e. 2:1 battles). I had an entire campaign I set up that was essentially designed to crush a force, mostly to see if they could pull through it / with what and they just refused to die in all but about 1 battle (they did lose their command lance). And then they just kept getting lucky rolls, a head shot here, a destroyed gyro there which let them either just escape or win entirely in battles that they were completely outclassed in (mostly veterans/regular pilots in about 50% upgraded equipment against elite MD with good gear and usually outmassed and/or outnumbered).

And this is despite the other thing I'm known for - never winning initiative. We even tend to play with some loss compensation so every 2 rounds lost (in a row) you gain a +1, stacking, initiative bonus until you win it. I've gotten to +4 from that. My rolls tend to turn around after about round 10 but I'm luckily to win it twice the first 10.

Head hits and crits when using Streak SRM 6's.

They never seem to show up with other weapons.

I think I'm known for "boot to the head!". Even as a Clan player I have a hard time resisting the opportunity when it is presented to me. But often enough I kick the head off, so it is worthwhile.

Ultra A/C rolls, I double tap constantly but generally only mess up when my bins are nearly dry. Pretty good with MASC too.

Sadly doesn't apply to RACs...

Rolling 12s on the Cluster hit chart with MRM-30s and MRM-40s.

Landing both punches with an Archer.

Rolling 6s for both punch hit locations with Archers.

Heck I even had a game where I rolled an unnerving string of 8s for hit locations.

Getting used as target practice. I really have no skill at this game, but still play when I occasionally can.

Letting others to win in spectacular ways. Last time this happened, I had a pristine heavy 'mech standing on a hill, pummeling opponents with LRM-fire, while other 'mech kept them occupied in close quarters combat. Players manage to get single hit from long range with LRM, score through armour critical and hit the full ammo location. And that 'mech was their target for the mission, which was otherwise going down really badly.

Headcapping. As soon as things start to look bad for me my opponents suffer an increased amount of headshots.

I have the unswerving ability for my pivotal units (C3 masters, Artillery units and so on) to get killed quickly by every single shot hitting a side torso and either shearing off the engine or detonating ammo.

The one thing I'm good at is losing. Ever since I won my first ever BT game, I've never won another since. I blame a the combination of poor mech selection, poor tactic and angry, vengeful dice gods.

What I'm strangely good at is keeping 'Mechs alive long after they should be dead. Prone, immobilised and with multiple engine hits? Not a problem. That thing, whatever it is, will just keep going till the end of time.

The other one I'm obnoxiously good at is the early-game Freak Headcap. Often it'll be a difficult shot on the first 'Mech in range, but then... bang. Ventilation.

On the other hand, there's two things I'm terrible with. The first is Melee 'Mechs; be it a hatchet or a sword or anything, I'll never hit with it. Hell, odds are on I won't even get close enough to use it. The second is Hovercraft; no matter how high a hit number I try to generate, they instead in my hands die horrible deaths

One thing I'm excellent at is teaching the game to someone and losing (not intentionally) the first match.  I might win in rematches, but in that initial bout, I lose.

Making very strange, anachronistic units often inspired by my own media tastes. And then biting off more than I can chew with them.

proving time and time again everything from 3025 is viable in the modern era,   nothing like using a vulcan and winning, sept maybe an unseen played as a 3025 rocking against its 3085 counter parts

Skidding off the map.

If there's a way to do it, even needing only 3 or more to avoid doing so, I'll find it.
Mordin Solus: We need a plan to stop them.
John Shepard: We fight or we die. That's the plan.
Ashley Williams: Wow. That's the plan? Is it just me, or did Shepard have better plans before he died?
Urdnot Wrex: Silence! This is the best plan anyone, anywhere has ever had!

Mine placement, which translates partially into artillery targeting.  The artillery targeting part is harder because I know where you'll probably be...I just have to figure out the when

Failing to get critical hits. Just cant get that 8 or better on the roll. This is why I tend to prefer big cannons that just blow locations off.
This however does culminate in one inevitable game where I get all my crit luck at once and just blow limbs away or get every ammo bin in range.

Underdog wins.

Seriously; even when the scenario is stacked specifically for my side to lose, I can't begin to tell you the times I actually win.

Bringing weird crap to the table that almost nobody would willingly use in combat, like civilian vehicles. Or lots of infantry.

My goal is to start each game with my enemies saying either "You brought what?!?" or "Oh hell, he brought that..."
