I just remembered something that might work well for the Nebula... Maybe.

A Deathworld.  Like the ones described in 40k where the flora and fauna are out to get you, that flower, or anything else that moves.  But, take it a step further, and have the world, or something, in control of said flora/fauna.  Have it steadily guide or adapt things to tactics and weapons over time, until you have moments where it's very sudden and apparent.

This would be a means of introducing evolving terrain that can fight back, and maybe grow and upgrade, RTS style, on the map sheet.

So, the Dinosaurs had about 182 million-years to evolve to the point they were so good at their particular-niches, they were over-specialized (well, except mammals have had more time to evolve). Perhaps a world with super-predators (like, um, Primordial (TV-show).

Have you read the novel Deathworld by Harry Harrison.  It was written in 1960 and introduced the whole concept.

A world descended from a ship that fled the Clan Homeworlds during the 29th century. Technology inevitably broke down but a handful of Elemental suits still exist, each under the control of a single descendant of the initial group of Clan warriors who went with them. All of them have lived for centuries thanks to Star League life extension technology and have ruled the primitive people in their territory for centuries.

However, their rule is crumbling, largely thanks to the work of a half-elemental armed with cybernetic implants and the largest sword you've ever seen. I call it... Elemental Hunter D.

Of the directed-intelligence deathworld, perhaps. But C.L. Moore and Henry Kuttner popularized the deathworld trope in the 1943 ("Clash by Night" followed by Moore's Fury in 1946). David Drake did some work in that universe ("Surface Action" and The Jungle), as well as a directed-intelligence in Redliners, which I heartily recommend. All of those could easily be mined for ideas.
Thought I might get a rocket ride when I was a child.          We are the wild youth,                                And through villages of ether
But it was a lie, that I told myself                                          Chasing visions of our futures.                   Oh, my crucifixion comes
When I needed something good.                                         One day we'll reveal the truth,                    Will you sing my hallelujah?
At 17, I had a better dream; now I'm 33, and it isn't me.      That one will die before he gets there.       Will you tell me when it's done?
But I'd think of something better if I could

Well, the original D was an anime pretty boy but there's no way an Amano character is coming out of an Elemental's genes, sooooo...

Thinking about it, there were stories written about Venus during the early days of SF, where it was filled with all sorts of creatures trying to kill people, so I suppose it goes back a long way...

Asimov had a story series where Venus was an ocean world.  This was decades before the Russian probe proved that to be... unlikely.

Not in these stories.  It was like water, and creatures native to Venus lived in it.

There is a part of me that is wanting easily accessed rules for some form of saurian or kaiju creatures.  Organic analogues for the Battlemech, Protomech, Battle Armor, or maybe even larger.

Wake up you youngster grognard!

Tick-Tock ( insert Samuel L. Jackson famous ending )

We need a collaboration of ideas to formulate a Dino Planet, perhaps Dinosaucers with micro-tech, formulating with Dino Riders that have olde tech usage to make Dino Squad a thing for humanoids...
