Design Challenge: Handheld Weapons

Today's challenge is simple: Make the best handheld weapon upgrade to a mech as you possibly can.

The challenge, of course, is that you must work on the HEAVIEST MECH POSSIBLE. Obviously, with lighter mechs, you can just cram all the weapons into the legs, and the handheld will be free weight, but with assault mechs, that's when you run into difficulties. You can't put a Gauss rifle into a mech's head.

The second rule is that it must be a STRAIGHT upgrade. It has to have either more armor, more ammo, more weapons, more mobility, or a combination compared to the base mech.

And to clarify that, you can do something like swap an AC5 with an LPPC if you want, but you can't just swap an LBX-5 with an LPPC. That's because you would loose the AA utility with it. As for AC20's and other high damage weapons you can't possibly fit, you must replace them with something as close as possible, and add something with another 5 points of damage.

The third rule is that the handheld must have AT LEAST 1 ton of armor. Don't want it blowing up too easy.

Handheld Weapons:
When constructing a unit to carry a Handheld Weapon, no tonnage or critical space is
required on the unit itself. (The Handheld Weapon is considered to be entirely external and self
-
contained.)
However, a unit inten
ded to carry a Handheld Weapon must incorporate two full sets of arm and hand
actuators.
Regardless of the total tonnage used, a Handheld Weapon may be constructed with a maximum of six heavy
(vehicular
-
class) weapons or a single BattleMech Melee weapon, n
ot counting ammunition and heat sinks. No
items described as

Other Equipment

(other than Artemis or TAG) may be incorporated into a Handheld
Weapon design. Unless otherwise indicated in its description, any item that ordinarily has mounting restrictions
(such as Heavy Gauss Rifles) cannot be placed in a Handheld mount.
Energy weapons placed in a Handheld mount require a number of heat sinks equal to the maximum heat
generated by the mounted weapon(s). Only standard (single) heat sinks may be mounted in a
Handheld
Weapon. Ballistic and Missile weapons as well as Chemical Lasers do not require heat sinks but must mount
ammunition if they are not one
-
shot weapons (such as Rocket Launchers). Ammo can be added to such
weapons on a per
-
shot basis, with each shot
's weight (in tons) determined by dividing 1 by the number of shots
the weapon normally carries per ton.
Standard armor may be added to a Handheld Weapon at a cost of 1 ton per 16 points of added armor (or 8
points per half
-
ton). Handheld weapons can only
carry standard armor.
The final weight of a Handheld Weapon is equal to the tonnage of all weapons, ammunition, heat sinks, and
armor mounted on the weapon, rounded up to the nearest half
-
ton.

Handheld Weapons may only be picked up and used by ProtoMech and ’Mech units possessing two functioning hand actuators. Critical
hits to a unit’s hand actuators force it to drop a Handheld Weapon during the turn’s End Phase (or prevent the unit from picking up such a weapon to
begin with). However, critical hits to any other arm actuators only add the (cumulative) penalties for making attacks with actuator damage.
Per the ’Mech Lifting Capabilities rule, a ProtoMech or ’Mech unit may only carry a single Handheld Weapon that weighs up to 10 percent of the
unit’s own total weight (20 percent, if the unit mounts operating Triple-Strength Myomer). However, doing so makes it impossible to make any physical
attacks beyond a charge, Death From Above or kick—or to use any weapons mounted in the unit’s arms, torso or Main Gun locations.
When used to attack, a Handheld Weapon may only be fired on one target per turn, even if the handheld mount carries multiple individual weapons
(such as a handheld mount with 2 medium lasers in it). Because the weapon is self-contained, it will not generate heat, nor can it draw on the unit’s
on-board ammunition supplies or take advantage of targeting computer and other electronic enhancements installed within the firing unit’s chassis.
If a unit using a Handheld Weapon takes a hit to either arm location, the attacker must roll 1D6. On a result of 6, the Handheld Weapon takes the
damage instead, and is destroyed if it sustains more damage from the hit than it has armor points.
Handheld Weapons may be picked up or dropped during the End Phase of any turn. Units with functioning hand actuators may only pick up a
Handheld Weapon in their own hex. Dropping a Handheld Weapon leaves the weapon in the hex where the unit is currently standing. If a unit carrying
a Handheld Weapon falls, it must make an additional Piloting Skill roll to avoid accidentally dropping the weapon, applying any arm actuator damage
modifiers in addition to any other applicable Piloting modifiers. A weapon dropped intentionally or otherwise may not be picked up again until the
End Phase of the following and subsequent turns.
A dropped Handheld Weapon’s location must be noted on the map. Dropped weapons may be targeted for weapon attacks by other units. Such
attacks are made at a +1 to-hit modifier, but also apply the –4 immobile target modifier.

That's pretty much it save for some crap about melee.

No more than 6 weapons.

Ammo using weapons require integral ammo bins.

Non-ammo using weapons require integral heat sinks, standards only.

And armor in case the arm carrying the hand held takes a hit.

It works with smaller mechs, so the goal is to do it on larger with the same principles.

Mainly, you'll probably have a bunch of missile spam.

It has TSM, but it also has a Bombast Laser to fine tune heat in almost any situation.  Of course it still has the common TSM vulnerability to heat weapons.  When it does have to drop the handheld weapon, it can capitalize on its active TSM to deliver a 40 point Lance hit in melee.

This one is an IndustrialMech, which might be cheating a little bit, but it has the advantage of Industrial TSM, which isn't affected by heat levels.  This was capitalized on by mounting Streak SRMs as its main armament.  It uses the same handheld weapons as the bergtrager, giving it a significant boost in firepower over its stock configuration.  Most importantly, it can carry two additional handheld weapons in lift hoists, though it takes a whole movement phase to switch weapons from Lift Hoists to hands.
