In case you want some help on it- go into the folder for Megamek, and find the 'data' folder. Then go into 'mechfiles'. You'll find a folder called 'unofficial'. It's the first thing I do when I download a new version of MM- I delete that folder (or at least park it somewhere for safe keeping). Now I don't have all of the UK stuff, random crap, etc. clogging the game up, and what's left is mostly from official sources.

Up to you if you want to do that, but it might help you clean the chaff from the wheat.

Slander of the highest order! We're all wastrels and ne'er-do-well types, and most of us are banned from 39 states (NOTE: 38, plus Kentucky votes next week).

OK, jokes aside, you already play Megamek, right? So you know the basic rules of the game, well enough to get by. Now, my job as a Demo Team Agent (don't let the red Battlemaster fool you, I wear both hats) is to teach new players, and get people playing the game. So if you show up, get beat on (and that does happen sometimes), and people taunt you, well, you won't want to come back. If you get beat on and you learn from it, and pay attention to what we're trying to teach you, you'll have been beat on- and be ready to come back next time with that knowledge in mind so it doesn't happen again.

We run a number of game types around here, ranging from Grinders to one-shot scenarios to mini-campaigns (Paul has been running a Davion/Kurita 3039 campaign recently), and a few 'none of the above' oddballs as well. It isn't uncommon to get together with players from the Baltimore area for games, and we even see our friends up in Philadelphia and Dover when we can. We hold a yearly gathering of Battletech fools from the entire Mid-Atlantic region every summer called Commandothon- this years is being held late, in October, and at the store in Glen Burnie.

Anyway, my point is, if you don't want to come out because you're worried you'll lose, you're gaming for the wrong reasons, to be blunt. I regularly get my ass kicked, and I've been playing for nearly 20 years now. Paul writes for the game, and he gets stomped on. None of us go to these games to 'WIN'. We go because these are good friends we've met through the game, and it's a pleasure to spend a day rolling dice, laughing, and getting in some good stories to tell with them. And if I happen to have a bad day of it, well, it beats not doing it at all.

Y'know.  I used to know Baltimore was a Mecca for Mecha.  Then I moved here and apparently forgot.  Thanks for the reminder.
Your stupid little opinion has been duly noted.

If I was to put together 5 canon designs without restriction of faction it would have been:

Pillager Anvil
Kodiak 5
Direwolf C
Marauder II Bounty Hunter
Stone Rhino 3

You need AOE weapons to compensate for swarm teams. Unfortunately since we are restricted from picking mechs of the same base design I can only use one Pillager. All the other 100ton AOE mechs lack stamina. I wish I had another AOE mech to choose from.

Speaking of stamina, an emphasis on energy loadouts or models with copious amounts of ammo and crit packed with crit seeking absorbing equipment is important. That's why the Kodiak 5, Stone Rhino 3 and Marauder II Bounty Hunter made this list.

You need at least two ECM carrying mechs to greatly increase your positional options while facing off against various types of C3 compositons. I originally had the Fafnir on my mind but decided to go with the Dire WOlf C because 22 crits of guarantied combined 60 explosive damage was too much to ignore. THis was a pretty difficult decision since this technically means I can't use the Widowmaker.

Yup, this helps a lot... especially when you haven't memorized all 2500+ chassis and variants (don't worry, that's pretty much anyone not on the MUL team - and probably not even them).

As I understand, Command Console is IS tech, thus making the Red Corsair BLR mixtech.

Actually, if you look them up in TacOps you'll find that command consoles are both IS and Clan tech; no need to mix anything. (You wouldn't even see any advantage if you did because in terms of game stats and effects both versions are identical.)

I'm not totally sure why, it may be the cockpit "face" design, but the Executioner always makes me think of the GoBots.

Why? I mean, I don't want to expect a new mech named "Poopdog" with three Ultra AC/20s in the new version. You know what I mean?

The quick history lesson:  Way back when, MechForce was the official BattleTech fan organisation.  Their main thing was publishing a semi-regular magazine and running the official tournament scene.  As BT gained in popularity elsewhere, MechForce UK andMechForce Germany formed in Europe and did much the same thing.  MechForce UK (MFUK hereafter) were especially prolific, producing a number of sourcebooks, and record sheet books, as well as a bunch of minis for their own original designs (and the PPC-armed Catapult).  While the MFUK designs were't published by FASA, as they were published by an official licensee who controlled organised play, their designs were deemed tournament legal and 'official' as far as MFUK organised events were concerned.

The MFUK mechs became somewhat legendary among online fans, especially as they weren't often seen outside the UK and Ireland, but as fandom became more linked and centralised the designs started to be shared around some more, and eventually they were statted up in Heavy Metal Pro, both as a download from the HMP website and later included with Heavy Metal Plus as standard.

The Megamek Dev team seem to err on the side of inclusion, and as such have most if not all of the MFUK designs included with the download.  By comparison the Solaris Skunk Werks team don't include the MFUK mechs in their mechfile download.

I'm currently playing another game in MegaMek. This time its on the gigantic 50x50 map "Stronghold". I started in the northwest, and the bot started in the southeast. We're just about to get within the 25 hex mark where we can use our ER Large Lasers.

Me: Warhawk (Masakari) C, Nova Cat A, Woodsman Prime, Timber Wolf (Mad Cat) S, Blood Asp Black Marauder (I'll show you guys the design in a sec).

Bot: Flamberge 3, Timber Wolf (Mad Cat) Bounty Hunter, Night Gyr A, Summoner (Thor) D, Nova Cat Prime.

A particular poster on these boards (Falchion), is extremely adept at kicking the pants off of just about anything with just four Locusts. Not even upgraded ones, if you're nasty.

You call this mech NOTHING? Tell me, whats the equivalent of this mech thats ACTUALLY canon? And don't forget the jump jets! Oh yeah, thats right, there is none because this mech is too good to be canon.

I don't think being "too good" is much of a barrier considering that the Hellstar is canon.

After hearing all the accolades I assume the picture of the victorious Locust Pilot standing over a burning Marauder in The Rules Of Warfare is an homage to Falchion.  :D
