The modern light missile support hovertank
« on: 20 December 2023, 12:08:21 »
It appears that there is only one modern light missile support hovertank out there at the moment, and it is a 40 tonner (Stygian/Hasasser II). Given that upgrading its engine, or switching to Clan tech could fix some of its problems, the question arises if the current BV environment could allow for such a tank to be worth fielding given all of the rigors of a modern battle? Is the Stygian the best that can be fielded for one's buck? I am aware of the APCs that can perform the task, but that is more incidental, as their primary task is more important.

PS It should be noted that Missile support hovertanks in the Inner Sphere should not have access not only to Clan LRMs, but also ATMs in addition to IS weaponry.

If you want canon tanks, the Buzzard is a good missile hover tank for the (post) Jihad era. Two MML-7 give you the same long range punch as the Stygian but add a very nice short range punch. The light PPC and deep ammo bins are just icing on the cake. It is a bit slow and fragile, though.

If you want something faster than 8/12, I think the Stygian is still your best bet. Obviously switching the missiles for double the number in clan tubes would be a nice upgrade, but even so it works well.

You can make a Zibbler Omni config. Or you can use the Epona A, but it’s 2K BV and not super modern. The Eldingar has a streak lrm variant with no infantry bay, although that loses a lot of the regular missile versatility and is 1800BV.
