Sweet! Drifting Dragons finally made it to Netflix!
We hear that there are tumults and riots in Rome, and that voices are raised concerning the army and the quality of our soldiers. Make haste to reassure us that you love and support us as we love and support you, for if we find that we have left our bones to bleach in these sands in vain, then beware the fury of the legions.

Finished How clumsy you are, Miss Ueno.  Not really sure what to say about it. Adult humor with a PG presentation. Got some really good laughs out of it. Entertaining enough that I'd watch a second season, but not sure who I'd recommend it to.

I liked it, even if it was a tad juvenile at times. Ueno's desperate, clumsy attempts to appeal to her crush were just too cute.

For the old-school anime fans, you may remember Keiji Gotoh - an animation director & character designer on dozens of major anime titles in the 90s, such as Sorcerer Hunters, Blueseed, & most famously Martian Sucessor Nadesico. Nadesico quite tragically wound up on production hell around the turn of the century due to a falling out between IP holders Movic & Starchild, but Gotoh-sensei had planned to distribute character designs & OP/ED storyboards for a theoretical Nadesico reboot at Comiket this year. With the event now cancelled, Gotoh-sensei has made the book available for free on booth here (Pixiv account required): https://gokikura.booth.pm/items/2048250

I wondered what happened with that franchise, especially after the movie.  Glad to see it's not as dead as Bubblegum Crisis.

If the book is free...does that reduce chances an anime of  Martian Sucessor Nadesico to ever to be made.

The chances are already pretty close to 0%. I think Gotoh-sensei is hoping that discussion of the idea might prompt a relook by the IP controlling parties. It's not like he can sell doujin at a profit, even if he was one of the original creators - copyright holders would wring his neck!

I wasn't aware of the IP situation. I hope his efforts works out.

So saw the first episode of "Drifting Dragons" on Netflix.

Wonder how many understand it's a homeage to whale hunting :D
The stuff about how they processed the dragon kill is 100% similar to traditional whale processing. Including cranes to pull back the blubber.

Finally had the time to catch up a bit with Plunderer.

It quite changes tone from around ep 8 onwards, doesn't it?

Why are so many animes turning into cooking shows lately?

Started Hinako Note yesterday.  Meh?  Good enough that I'll finish it, but that doesn't say much.  I rarely don't finish a story I've started.  It's more of an OCD thing than anything else. Something has to be really bad for me to fully abandon it.  Really hate how the characters turn chibi like every 2 seconds.

Why are so many animes turning into cooking shows lately?

I think because for some reason food gives the animators a chance to really show off.  Seems like all food an anime looks amazing.

They tend to be well regarded by audiences? Most people I know tend to be pretty positive about that sort of anime.

Just learned about another streaming app that plays some classic anime titles like Bubblegum Crisis and the original Appleseed movie.

Yes indeed, that's one of the reasons I was so interested in it.

Cutting the blubber and meat out, rendering the oil, and they even mentioned some parts used to manufacture perfume.

The show does a decent job with its characters and the details of the ship, the story, and the animation is good for full CGI.

I just think of the 2017 film the Dragon Dentist whenever i hear something about Dragons. The film's opening with wonderfully detailed WW1 era Dreadnoughts duking it out with a huge flying dragon is something to be seen.

Discussions on food and cooking have been in anime as long as I can remember, but it just seems like every show is trying to have a Gordan Ramsey character these days.

The first actual fully cooking-themed anime came in the mid 80s, with Oishinbo (The Gourmet). It's also pretty much the longest-running - the manga was serialized from 1983 to 2014, when censorship struck for political reasons. 111 manga volumes, 136 anime episodes, 2 anime movies, 1 live-action movie, 2 video games. Viz media released "thematic compilations" of the manga in the US, cutting it down to 8 volumes.

I think it's the chibi thing that's killing it for me. I know every anime does it from time to time, but this is just too much. It's like the writers and animators are in a fight over whether it's a high school or elementary school show.  Also, I don't remember anything about a theater troupe in the descriptions I had read way back.  I thought it was a slice of life about a bookstore so it was kind of a bait and switch.  Granted, that could all be on me just misreading or getting it mixed up with another anime.  I did bookmark the stream a long time ago.  Still, that hurts its first impression.  Yes, I get picky over odd things.  See my Azur Lane rant.

Like I said, going to stick with it so maybe it'll grow on me.  I have noticed a fair amount of crossovers between what you and I like, so there might be something there.

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken  just finished watching it...reminded  me of 2 friends i had who had imaginations that were way out there and one actually had some artistic drive...but once we got to collages both seem to just die...no more imagination no more drive no more wonder it was as if something dark just sucked the life and joy out of them both ...we still bump into each other and to be honest i have another friend who works as a mortician and she has way more spark than those two and zest for living and fun along with sense of wonder than theses two examples of living dead. it got me wondering and thinking when do we loose that spark that sense of fun and imagination? and should we mourn the living dead or just let them be? the guys who made Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken dont seem to had lost that "it" that made this show unique.
you sure cannot out run death...but sure as hell you can make that bastard work for it!

Hinako Note finished.  I've decided to promote it from "meh" to "I'd watch a second season".  Got some good laughs out of it.  Just has a few things that kinda irked me, but they're more pet peeves and not worth listing.

Decided to try watching a couple episodes of Cardcaptor Sakura since it's on Funimation right now.

The thing that really jumps out at me (aside from the fact that all the main characters sound like they were dubbed with the same VA) is just how generic the opening theme sounds.

We're talking about the original Cardcaptor Sakura in Japanese, right? Because I'm flabbergasted! Catch You Catch Me is a catchy, earworm of a song, & Sakura Tange & Junko Iwao sound nothing alike!  :o

It's not a bad song, it's just sort of very much what I'd expect from an anime produced at that time.

And I'm talking about the English Dub.  I realize that Sakura, Tomoyo, and Kero all have different VAs, but trying to do the squeaky pre-teen voices resulted in them sounding pretty darned similar.

Aaaaahhh! Can't say I've listened to it. This is a recent re-dub, isn't it? I remember originally it had that horrific hack job from 4kids I think it was?

I have no idea how old this dub is, but I believe that Funimation uploaded a dubbed version that was more true to the original and not the abomination that 4Kids inflicted on the English-speaking world.  I hope so, anyway.

So...
It's the Animax (I believe) dub that's apart of the Reissue that came out a couple of years ago then?

This seems best related to here.

From Tiger and Bunny, plays off the Lego movie and the early relationship between Wild Tiger and Barnaby, whom Tiger calls Bunny in a kind of way to bond with the guy.  It kind of backfires on him.
