Possible to bend limbs on IWM mechs?
« on: 10 March 2011, 15:27:26 »
So here is a silly question for us noob mini bashers/painters but is it possible to bend limbs without breaking them?

Check: http://www.camospecs.com/Miniature.asp?ID=4882 for example.

The wolfhound comes with that right arm bent at like a 45ish degree angle. Can it be straightened like in this by bending or is cutting required?

You can bend a little bit (Locust legs) but cut and pin is the way I would go.
Captain is hilariously easy to set off, like a walking barrel of gunpowder within a self contained field of destructium and a great big button on his forehead that says "Push me for fireworks".

Oh I'll cut and pin the body but I'm not really sure that arm is big enough to pin.

The metal will not readily bend unless it is quite thin. Cutting is almost always required. Trying to wrench a knee or elbow will likely result in it not working, or deforming or tearing. You're better off cutting it. If the part is light enough, simply gluing it in place may work even without pinning if there's enough surface area for a good bond (I'd still recommend pinning).

Okaaaaaaaay since I'm still waiting on FPG to process my order, and thus am at a standstill on my archer and other mechs, I'm gonna start my wolfhound and I dig that pose so looks like I'm cutting.

Sometimes you don't have to cut all the way. You can cut or saw a wedge where the elbow would be, and make a slit on the other end. This essentially makes the metal you are bending thinner. I would then green stuff to fill/strengthen the area. Hope this makes sense.

I managed to do it without green stuff...

It wasn't easy that is for sure... I'd advise against anyone using a dremel to cut the chassis LOL I managed to make it look ok but man I thought I fudged the dog there for a minute!!! As for the weapon itself, again I used the dremel to cut away the underside elbow and then it was able to bend down into a socket which held crazy glue.

I'm priming it now. Overall very happy with how that turned out!! Sooooo much better than that static pose!

Dremels are wonderful, but you have got to be super careful. If it's something you intend to cut right off, they are the slickest thing, but if you only want to cut 'just so', well for that I recomend a razor saw or the like

I'm running out of black paint so I am gonna head to the hobbyshop this weekend when my son is gone and pickup a jewelers saw (if they have one) and some black and maybe some brown.

X-acto makes a nice saw. It's what I use.

How can you saw with no serrated edge? You must be there until the second coming!

no, the saw I am talking about has a serated edge. A blade about eight inches long, and a red handle. X-acto makes more then just the standard x-acto knife

Yeah, it's great. I've used it for all sorts of projects, besides modeling.
