Pick your heavy skirmisher ...
« on: 23 October 2016, 05:32:21 »
You are a FWLM Mechwarrior in 2900. The Third Succession War rages across the Inner Sphere and you have just lost your ride. But since your regiment is high on the Quartermaster's supply list, you can pick one from two currently unassigned 'Mechs.

Both are in the similar shape and the FWLM has spare parts for both 'Mechs (produces Guillotine and raided the Grasshopper factory and spare parts warehouses before their destruction), so your choice actually narrows down to what 'Mech you like more.

As a skirmisher would tend to fight from longer distances and avoid short-ranged direct contact with the enemy, I chose the LRM-equipped Grasshopper over the SRM-equipped Guillotine. The only thing separates these two is their missile launchers. These two mechs are fraternal twins.

For me it's the Grasshopper too, those hands give it more options for raiding and assisting after battle.

I like them both, but I would pick the Grasshopper too.

Edit: But if I could get a Guillotine with hands (everything else is stock) I'd go for that as I like the Guillotines looks more.

I like the Grasshopper better, but I'm going Guillotine just because it's in production in the FWL.  The Grasshoppers spare parts have to be spread across the FWL and I don't want to be dependent on a finite supply cache.

Hook me up with the Guillotine. Easier access to spare parts in an era where that's already a problem and a better missile weapon to exploit the holes you make with the lasers. Not to mention just how good it looks.

A tough choice.  The Grasshopper with the LRM-5 will be more of a skirmisher, but both mechs are primarily brawlers.  The Guillotine has better upgrades, IMO.

The Grasshopper was the first mech I used in mech warrior table top RPG . So I will always be nostalgic about them even though I moved on from them and do not field them anymore .

Since you said skirmisher, that implies medium range.  So I would pick an Ostsol, Ostroc, Dragon or a Quickdraw for that role.

Guillotine, mostly for the reasons given already.

Of the 2 mentioned, weedleaper. I'd much prefer an Ostroc or ostsol.

I normally don't think of close assault units as skirmishers, but if I had to use one of those two badly suited alternatives in that role, I'd probably go with the GHR because of the LRMs-5 rack, so it's not as heavily forced into knife-fight range to be useful.

To me, "heavy skirmisher" is practically a contradiction in terms.  A skirmisher is supposed to avoid melee combat and rely on mobility and ranged weaponry, where a GHR or GLT is primarily designed for brawling, and a Charger is practically incapable of skirmishing with its 5 Small Lasers.

I'd consider an Ostsol, Quickdraw, or Dragon to be about the closest you can get to a "heavy skirmisher" in the 3025 era.  Anything slower can't avoid melee combat with most standard "line" units (at 4/6 speed), and is therefore not a skirmisher.

Grasshopper -MOST of the time .

If the terrain will include a lot of urban terrain then I'll
choose the Guillotine .

The Hopper has an extra ton of armor ,
a long range weapon ,and a large laser in the center
torso where it just never seems to get taken out .

The Guillotine focuses it's close range battery better with
an SRM-6 but it can easily get harassed at long range buy
units that it just can't close with to make a shot .
