Weaselly Wiesel
« on: 05 October 2023, 09:38:10 »
Was reminded of the old Wiesel thread recently and decided to take a look at what one can do with a FCE-powered mini-omni-tank and fractional accounting.

It got... a bit less than impressive. :undecided:

My old copy of SAW doesn't want to do fractional accounting correctly, but here are the proposed stats:
Code: [Select]
5 ton IS tracked combat vehicle
0.5 tons Structure
0.25 tons Controls
1.2 tons 45 FCE, speed 9/14
0.2 tons Turret, 2 ton capacity
0.85 tons HFF armor, 16 points
Front 5
Right 2
Left 2
Back 2
Turret 5

Podspace: 2 tons, 3 slots

With only one fixed heat sink the energy options are severely limited - standard or ER small laser are the only options. Fractional accounting for the ammo makes other weapons a bit more viable:

Code: [Select]
Prime: MML3, ammo 0.5 tons (10 LRM, 8 SRM)
A: 3xMagshot, ammo 16
B: 3xLMG, ammo 67
C: 2xRL/10, 1xRL/15
D: 3xFlamer, ammo 10 (how long do you expect to survive at point-blank of PO'd infantry?!?)
E: ERSL, 0.45 tons cargo
F: TAG, RL/10, VGL
G: GECM, VGL
H: BAP, Remote sensor dispenser
I: 1 ton infantry compartment, 2xVGL
J: Bulldozer
K: Medium bridgelayer
L: 2 tons comm equipment

And, of course...

M: 2 tons cargo

So, what do you say? Maybe the armor should drop another two points to give it limited amphibious capabilities? azn

That is certainly possible, but it's not really a tankette any longer if you take the tracks off...

True, true... though I think it would still count if you only dropped the turret... ;)

Why 2 RL10, 1 R15?  why not 4 RL10 for range, shoot and scoot?
"For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast, And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed:And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill, And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!"

Only 3 slots. Didn't need more slots for any other config, so 5 rockets got sacrificed for a little armor.

Dropping the turret could solve the armor problem... ;)

Definitely not a fixed mount. It could be a pintle, except CBT pintely mounts don't allow 2-ton weapons!

And Sabelkatten?
Don't be discouraged. Like, at all. It took me around 8 months of fiddling around with sizes, engine size, and armor carried, before I finalized the Wiesel in the old thread.

The fact you were able to get that many configs figured out already is a testament to skill as a designer, and not a mark against you.

Coming up with configurations is a bit of a speciality of mine. But, frankly, on a design with only two tons of capacity it's more about checking what gear can even be mounted!

Also, I kind of invaded your thread too... I got two Wiesels in there. But all of them are fusion powered which makes practical configs a lot simpler (MLs for the win!). I really wanted to see if a FCE could make for a practical unit too, and I'd say it worked out. azn

There's the Wire-Guided Missile from AToWC that could be used on a Pintle Mount.
