== Overview:==
The Alliance Military Corps was facing a crisis in combating the continued
threat of piracy. Their forces were spread too thin and lacked the
flexibility to deal with lightning-fast raids. Their 'Mechs were considerd
too valuable to meet the threat while protecting against military threats and
their armored vehicle forces were too slow to engage the fast-moving pirates.
The solution to the problem came from an unexpected direction, as no one
had thought the coincidence possible. One pirate raid had been forced to
leave behind a beat-up old Star League-era Beagle light hovertank. The
vehicle was missing the advanced Star League-era tracking system and
the armor was a patchwork of various types, but the true prize of the design
was the powerplant.
While no one was manufacturing the little Nissan 95 fusion powerplant,
Praxton Fusion Products were considered to be the experts on the Nissan
powerplants in either the Inner Sphere or the Periphery. Praxton engineers
were able to put that expertise to work in reverse-engineering the older
powerplant design; using the Beagle as a template, United Outworlders
Corporation was able to design a new light hovertank that could respond
quickly to any situation. In honor of its 'parent' vehicle, UOC dubbed the
design the Bloodhound, and the AMC soon began buying as many of the new
hovertank as UOC could manufacture.
== Capabilities:==
The Bloodhound is designed as a quickly deployable vehicle able to meet
quickly developing situations. With top speeds in excess of 180 km/h, the
Bloodhound is among the fastest hovertanks in production. Even its cruising
speed of 120 km/h is faster than many military ground vehicles or light 'Mechs.
This speed gives the hovertank the ability to act as a scout, contain hostile
forces, and gives the option to either engage themselves or give slower heavier
units time to respond. The high speed of the hovertank is also a good portion of
its defense, as it can only carry 4 tons of armor to defend itself. The small size
and low profile of the Bloodhound makes it a difficult target to hit when it is
moving at top speed, making up even more for the relatively thin armor.
The firepower of the Bloodhound is excellent when compared to many scout
vehicles and even some light 'Mechs. This offensive power comes from two
turret-mounted medium lasers; the second laser is mounted where the original
design mounted its sensor wand. The sustained firepower of the lasers is
enhanced by the fact that the Bloodhound is a very cool-running vehicle.
Even at top speed with both lasers firing, a Bloodhound generates no waste
heat that could distort the electronics or affect the pilot.
The electronics were the systems the UOC engineers could not reverse
engineer. So instead, the designers made do with locally available systems
that were both reliable and capable. The Bloodhound has some of the best
communications gear available to the Periphery, and is more than capable of
overcoming difficult conditions and provide clear lines of communications.
The targeting system is robust and reliable, but lacks much of the advanced
capabilities of the original Beagle system.
== Variants:==
The design tolerances of the Bloodhound are so tight that no official
variants are expected. Any variants will be one-off battlefield repairs
using different equipment.
== Deployment==
The Bloodhound so far is only found in the Outworlds Alliance, where the
AMC is buying up as many of the little hovertanks as are available. UOC is
working out the manufacturing bugs and is now starting to meet the production
goals specified by the AMC contract. It remains to be seen if United
Outworlders can find the werewithal to expand the manufacturing lines in the
existing factory by invest in expanding the facility at Mitchella, or if a new
manufactory will have to be constructed..
