...why can't we have a JSDF show set in anything remotely like the real world? Or is the military that despised over there? I mean, Rescue Wings was fantastic; I'd love more like that. Oh well, at least it's not another friggin "video game isekai" series.

Technically, leaving aside the dragons, Hisone to Masotan this season is a pretty relaxed "standard" military thing. I mean, there isn't even any drama (by itself) about it being set in the military, or about why the girls are there.

They want to show the JSDF in action, but need to get around real-world considerations, many of which shall not be discussed here. Easiest way to do that seems to be pitting them against a foe not of this world.

It don't need to be combat action and JSDF does more than "hurry up and wait"

Oh it's getting there, I believe.
Hisone to Masotan is interesting. I think where the plot is going seems a little off, but the rationale why that direction is being taken is worth exploring. I also feel the softer and more old-school character designs help in that regard.

I thought that was common to militaries the world over.

I'm loving the overall exceedingly chill atmosphere of Hisone to Masotan. It's mildly military, sure, but at the same time, the direction they're taking it did basically lead a friend to joke that with the metaphors they were making about self-worth, in any other year, this would have been a 'Mecha show. It's overall great and one of the highlights for the season for me at least.

Which I'm fine with, or even something like Rescue Wings (Yomigaeru Sora, good stuff) mixed with Tokyo 8.0 - though, I suppose post-Touhoku, that's not coming back on TV for a long damn time. I'd be fine with space aliens, or anything else, or even just on-post shenanigans between bored soldiers. Or something like Airbats, extended out. Plenty of options that sidestep Rule 4 plenty.

Now, sticking my face into Rule 4 territory and blowing bubbles in it like bobbing for apples, Zipang's a fantastic story but good grief it's political as hell. So that's all I'll say about that.

I've been watching alot (catching up actually) on my subs of Yamato 2202. Man is Empire bit stranger than they were in the original series. I'm not sure if i like it.

On the positive side, I just started watching Yamato 2199. Really good sci-fi anime I missed when it first came out. At least I can binge watch it now! :D
