Avalanche
« on: 01 August 2023, 15:29:13 »
This was conceived in the context of a 3080-3100 follow on to the Project Nelson link to address what sort of warship the newly minted Raven Alliance might be inclined to build in that era. To accommodate the later era cannon losses have been applied to the Project Nelson fleet either on a 1-to-1 basis or applying cannon Aegis Class losses to Svalinn Class ships.

With this background it was felt that the most pressing need was for a suitable replacement to the heavy Sovetskii losses taken with only a single ship remaining of the class in Raven Alliance hands and even that only after some fairly heroic salvaging efforts. The key attributes that the Sovetskii had that other ships of a similar tonnage lacked was docking points and cargo capacity. While the need for cargo capacity had waned since the days of the SLDF recent experience had made abundantly clear the value of dropship space combatants and so a need for a warship with more then 2 docking points was desired.

The Avalanche is the outcome of the series of designs based off this simple requirement and fleshed out into a full warship with a range of capacities. Ships of this class will be named both ships lost in the departure from Lum as well as names selected by the new Outworlder brethren.

While a capable combatant the Avalanche is not expected to seek out combat with other warships so much as establishing control over space by both denying the enemy the use of smaller craft by their destruction and deploying both dropships and fighters herself. Against a peer enemy the Avalanche is intended to keep range and use a combination of direct firepower and her carried fighters and dropships to destroy the enemy while minimizing risk to herself.

Probably not quite that focused on yard duties since those are traditionally aimed at repairing jump capable ship where this only has a very small bay but it provides all the support roles a Warship can offer for everything smaller then a jumpship/warship. A relatively ample cargo bay, lots of strike craft, a good number of hard points and of course the naval repair bay.

Except the ship can't transit while refitting is under way.

I don't think that should disturb the intended role too much, enough repair capacity to patch up a dropship that ran into serious trouble enough that it can be attached to the docking point and taken home. If there's something forcing the Avalanche to want to transit immediately ( another warship basically ) then there's no dropship worth sticking around for given the relative value of things.

That is true, otoh, you might need to consider moving into a site and go comms dark, not even moving.

That way everyone else has to come to the Avalanche.

Sitting quietly, especially if you're the invader, waiting for the necessary chance to come out.

If you're staying still, even if you lose the initial drive, a Yard Warship loose inside enemy lines, on comms blackout is a major issue. They'll have to scrounge for you, a big fat juicy target that they could use in repairing.

Also case in point, a yardship, great foothold options, especially if you can send messages and coordinate future plans.

Those thoughts are certainly a big part of how the Avalanche came together, a single warship able to help enable all sorts of mischief far away from home. Not just black-space stuff either of course as 5 docking collars and a pretty deep cargo hold should be able to deploy and support a landing force for some time. In a fleet setting the extra docking collars and repair capacity can help an assortment of Assault or pocket-warships provide a robust escort function and provide some naval assets that you can afford to risk on chancier operations.

It's probably worth the couple thousand tons to upgrade the NL/35s to 45s.  They reach Extreme Range.

It's not but that was a pretty thoroughly used point of reference.
