I believe in second-hand verification at the most in order to believe a place exists. If a believable source can tell me they've seen a location with their own eyes, I'll believe them. But none of this friend-of-a-friend-of-an-ancestor crap. To this day, I'm unconvinced of the reality of Austria.

There's a town in Austria I'm not convinced of the existence of, but the censortron won't let me type its name.

Buxton?  Nice little town that, my Dad used to take me when I was visiting him.

Not as nice as Glossop mind, though that's primarily down to the astonishingly
pretty hills around it.

York is a nice town too, though it's been a very long time.  I remember one time
listening to a early REM record on my Walkman....while my Dad was inside the
Minster listening to choral evensong.  Of course when that was over, we had a
good couple of pints before the train back to Manchester.

I can't listen to some songs now, without thinking back to times that they're linked
to.  A heartening thing in my opinion.

...or a movie or a quote.  Not to drag an Off Topic thread down here but I convinced my eldest to say "na-nu, na-nu" amidst his rambling toddler talk before bed tonight.  Robin Williams rarely failed to make me laugh and I'm glad he helped my son do the same to me.

I hope you all are well.  Enjoy Gen Con if you are going.

Two days of school down and I haven't murdered any younglings yet.  Coming to appreciate the experience of veteran teachers more each day though, they're way more prepared than I am.

That's good. My final year of classes starts next week. I'll be glad to be done.

Also, do you have someone assigned as a mentor? My girlfriend is a music teacher, and said her year in rural North Dakota would have been much better if she had talked to the music teacher in the next town over.

I had a similar thing with other nearby branches of my store, back then.

I made it my business to know my direct equivalents in those nearby towns,
and do them what favours I could with stock.  Then when I needed advice or
a favour, I was already covered.  Also so were they hehe.

Today I'm happy, managed to get myself funded for the final course that I've
wanted to study.  So another 9-10 months of Swedish lies ahead of me.  To
some degree I forget sometimes, how damn good I am at convincing people
that my interests are theirs.  I often don't think I'm especially good at much,
until I have to get something like that done.

Thankfully though I've made some really good progress language wise, in the
last course I was on.  I couldn't be lazy and use English so much, when half the
class were Afghan.  They were real nice folks too, some of them likely I'll be
studying with again.

Oh just curious if you did self-propelled or, uh, fixed? Towed? Not sure what the technical designation for 'not on tracks' is... Which proves my point of not knowing nearly as much about Artillery as I do about other boomy stuff.

Artillery needs planning or it's just dangerous!

Also, FB doesn't have to be all-consuming... Just because I'm a lost cause in terms of trying to get me off!

I think the term is towed and from memory of Wikipedia (ha!) the USMC doesn't have any self propelled field artillery just self propelled air support and naval guns (I'd hope a Destroyer's 5" gun counts as "self-propelled"!)

I'm doing the single Dad thing for today and tomorrow while the wife attends a memorial service so this answer might be disjointed.  Apologies.

In short, between '91 and '95, when I came in, the Marine Corps divested itself of all self-propelled (SP) systems as they were more cumbersome for embarkation than they were effective for fire support.

Currently, Marine Artillery is towed howitzers (155mm M777A2) and towed mortars (120mm M327 rifled mortar) as well as wheeled rocket (M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System [HIMARS]).  A key indicator as to why I won't have an artillery battalion to command one day is the fact that I was a towed M198 battery commander and when I was the S-3 for 10th Marines our M327s were deployed and we had no rockets.

As to Dan's point regarding aviation and Naval Gunfire:  the former get irritated when called air artillery and I can see their point while the latter is terribly ineffective in terms of volume of fire and range.  In amphibious operations, while the "King (of Battle) don't swim," the Navy has embraced "a ship is a fool to fight a fort" as if it were gospel.

Crap, the youngest just woke up after another short nap.

I intend to revise my "safe sedation" course before we have small people

Thinking about USMC air support, I still find it weird that from my not huge cohort of FB friends from school (and this is school in London, England) one is a USMC Cobra pilot and another is married to a Marine Sergeant (I think) in San Diego

In unrelated news, my attempts to join the British Army are going at a pace which makes NHS bureaucracy seem speedy and efficient  :-\

Dan: No news is good news?

C6: Thank you! I'm way more enlightened now. I would have assumed the Marines had SPA due to the fact that your fighting style is perceived as more mobile. However, embarkation makes quite a bit of sense.
I had no idea the HIMARS even existed! I'm ashamed...

My next nerd question because I'm all about airbrushing camo now, is what color scheme is everything? Desert Sand ? NATO?

And Abigail has finally started consistently sleeping through the night (ignoring an aberration on Tuesday). The constant barrage of "When are you having another?" is starting to reach a fevered pitch.

greatsarcasmo: people keep asking us when we're going to add a girl to our two boys.  I respond by saying that I'm scheduling my vasectomy after my next dental appointment....which is funnier if you know Navy Medicine.  Nerd might get it.

In my opinion, SPA is quicker to transition from travel to firing and back again, a handy trait mind you.  Also, a tracked SPA can cross obstacles more readily than a prime mover and towed howitzer.  The blinkered types like to point to the M1A1s mobility as the reason to have SPA.  I point out that a) what howitzer is built on the M1A? chassis, b) what USMC infantry carrier can keep pace (the AAV can't), c) doesn't the infantry have infantry-stuff to rather than 0-60 demonstrations, d) since when does an howitzer section need to cross obstacles that combat engineers haven't reduced and e) I spent a lot of time waiting on 1st Bn, 2d Marines to get its mechanized act together back in '03 so I'm personally not impressed.

I really enjoyed pointing most of that out to an Artillery Col last year.  More evidence.

Color?  That's tricky.  Home station for some units (East Coast, not sure of Pacific units) is still woodland, some of the Maritime Pre-positioning Forces (MPF) is desert.  Really, it adds to the gypsy caravan look we aspire towards.

Dan:  I've found Cobra pilots, and Sergeants, to be good people to know.  Generally, them and Harrier guys tend to have their crap in a low number of sacks.  On the military gig, while patience is a virtue remember that patiently tilting at windmills is merely self-entertaining.  Don't let others dictate your career, you've deeper potential than most folks.

Nearly 2100 local and both children are quiet.  Yahtzee.
