New Battletech terrain molds from Hirst Arts
« on: 10 November 2018, 16:31:29 »
Hello everyone!

Bruce Hirst here. I have finally put the instructions up for the Space Fortress blocks. If you're familiar with my wok, I make rubber molds that you can pour plaster or dental stone into to make building blocks.  You can find instructions about how to make these on the Hirst Arts web site. Below is a photo of one layout using the blocks.

The mechs you see here are some of the CAV mechs from Reaper. Here's a photo comparing the scale to a Vulture

I spent roughly about six months working on the blocks for this scale of terrain. There are a total of 82 different blocks if you have all three molds, so I had to post some specific instructions on how to build with them. All of the blocks are in 1/4" increments so most everything fits together nicely. The hard part is to know what to do with all of the bits (hence the instructions).

I tried my best to make elements that would be the most useful for this scale and still reflect the "feel" of the Battletech universe.

Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Thanks,
Bruce Hirst

Ooooh, snap!  This is straight up aimed at me.

As a 15-year veteran of using your stuff, and a lifelong Battletech nerd, I can't wait to try these out!

All I can say is....Durn! That looks SWEET! Big question is how do they fit with a 1.75" hex?

The blocks are all in 1/4" increments. The main blocks are 1" squares and most of the other blocks are 1" x 1/2" rectangles.

The way we play (using 1.5" hexes) is to try and make the buildings fill most of a hex. We use 1.5" hex tiles (dirt and rock textured) and glue together a few as the base. Then we make the building on top of that base. When we set the whole thing on the hex grid, the hex tiles we glued the buildings to are a reference as to which hexes are filled with building.

When I made the instructions, I did not glue these down to hex tiles because people use different sizes of hexes. Some still use a grid for their games (games other than Battletech). I didn't want people to feel limited to the hexes we use.

It's really no different than using any other kind of free standing terrain you set on a table.

Thanks,
Bruce Hirst

No, thank you.

I just did not want something that was geared for a 1" hex (standard map Size).

Knowing the scale makes it much more appealing.

Those look very Alpha Strike friendly as well.  I might have to look into this.  Thanks for sharing the info!

I picked the new molds up a few weeks ago, and poured them once each last week to get blocks to test fit into interesting combinations. Now I need to pour two of them 16 times and one 10 times, and I'll have the blocks for ~65 buildings and gun turrets of various sizes.

Some terrain to look like the surface of the Death Star, using the new molds.

Could see it as a Sub-Cap laser set, not bad overall.
