A bodyguard for your squishy fire support 'Mechs. (L1)
« on: 26 November 2018, 07:23:09 »
Man-At-Arms MAA-M5

Mass: 70 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Chassis Config: Biped
Rules Level: Introductory
Era: Succession Wars
Tech Rating/Era Availability: D/X-F-D
Production Year: 3026
Cost: 5,961,673 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,401

Chassis: Unknown Standard
Power Plant: Unknown 280 Fusion Engine
Walking Speed: 43.2 km/h
Maximum Speed: 64.8 km/h
Jump Jets: None
    Jump Capacity: 0 meters
Armor: Unknown Standard Armor
Armament:
    2  LRM-15s
    4  Medium Lasers
    1  Hatchet
Manufacturer: Black Hawk Mechworks
    Primary Factory: Unknown
Communications System: Unknown
Targeting and Tracking System: Unknown

Overview:
The Man-At-Arms is a Battlemech with a very specific battlefield purpose, but
one that it fulfils more than adequately. Responding to the need for a design
that could act as a bodyguard for heavy fire-support lances, 'Techs at Black
Hawk Mechworks were faced with the not inconsiderable challenge of producing a
'Mech that would fulfil that criteria, while at the same time making sure that
it did not subtract from the overall efficiency of its lance. The result is a
'Mech that can lay down a nominal array of long-range fire, while at the same
time acting as a deterrent to 'Mechs that wish to close in.

Capabilities:
The Man-At-Arms is armed with paired class-15 Long Range Missile units, which
share three tons of ammunition between them. This allows the Man-At-Arms to
fire a constant stream of missiles for a full 2 minutes - the same duration as
the Archer Battlemechs that it typically protects. When enemy 'Mechs move into
range it can immediately deploy four Medium Lasers as its backup weapons.
Finally, as the main deterrent measure of the 'Mech, a massive hatchet in its
Right Arm allows the Man-At-Arms to cleave through enemy armour like a hot
knife through butter; any 'Mech fast enough  to close with the Man-At-Arms and
its lance is liable to be fragile enough to suffer armour penetration and
internal damage through just a couple of strokes of the hatchet. Heat levels of
the Man-At-Arms are kept under control by 13 heatsinks, and as long as the
pilot concentrates on dealing damage at one set of ranges overheat is minimal.
Finally, 12 tons of armour provide good protection for the 'Mech, with an
emphasis on rear armour in the side torsos helping to ensure that speedier
'Mechs that break through the lines are unable to easily deal critical damage
to its fire-support abilities.

Since you've got a Hatchet anyway you'd probably be better off with two of the lasers in the LA.

Could easily be an Archer refit. Downgrade the LRMs, move the RA laser to the LA, move CT lasers forward, and Hatchet and heat sinks. :)

I was thinking the exact same thing.  No need for a new chassis, re-arm the existing one with tweaks to locations.
If at first you don't succeed, make it worth the repairman's time!

skip the hatchet
use a lyran or dragoons model and add TSM and swap any rear facing lazers around

Started with twin LRM15s (helps it blend in better), but I replaced one with a PPC for better endurance, and, uhh, hatchet? Don't need no hatchet.

(yes, it's not 3025 L1, sorry (not sorry))

Breetai, considering your other thread on the nasty 3 LRM 15 with dual LL's 85 tonner, what is your thinking towards the AC 20, PPC, LRM 15 alternate build listed above?

A company with 3 Lances of 1 Leonidas 001 with 3 of the 85 ton 3 LRM 15 with 2 LL's missile boats would sound like a rather dangerous LRM group.

1st Lance
1 Leonidas with AC 20, PPC, LRM 15
3 (?) with 3 LRM 15's, 2 LL's

2nd Lance
1 Marauder
3 Warhammers

3rd Lance
2 Jenners, 3025 (4 ML, 1 SRM 4)
2 Locusts, 3025 (2 MG, 1 ML)

I don't play Sphere, so this may be a really bad 3025 Company. Hopefully this inspires someone to make a better Company from this idea point.

Don't forget the one I posted isn't a L1 mech, it's got Endo and DHS. The LFF could be dropped entirely for slightly less armor, but w/o Endo or DHS it's not going to fit in a 70t frame.

Now, you could fit all that in a 80t 3/5 assault frame at L1 though.

At 85t you can squeeze in 3 JJs for 3/5/3 movement and max efficient armor.

Your 'Mech, your choice on the 80 or 85 ton basis for the TL1 setup.

Still, this thing is a beast even as an 85 L1. I'd go L1 as JJ's, an AC 20, PPC, and LRM 15 with max armor at a rather efficient 85 is going to bring the hurt.
