The Eighty-Fifth and the militia traded more weapons fire.  The infantry that exited the Goblin were hit by missiles and beam weapons fire.  They started running to the south after the armor.  Walther’s Marauder took a few more missile and particle projection cannon hits, but no armor was breached.  Fitzpatrick and Klein pounded the two trailing Manticores with missiles, PPCs and lasers, but the armor on the heavy tanks held.

The militia tanks moved south leaving their stricken comrade.  The infantry squad that was without a transport moved south while taking PPC fire which killed several more of them.  They tried desperately to get out of the line of fire.

“Vivaldi Eight to Five, I am Winchester on my LRMs.”  “Five copies, get to cover,” said Lauder.  The Smart’s Striker must also be low on LRMs and they both have most of their streaks.

The Manticores sent a few PPC shots and LRM volleys at the mechs on the hill and the stricken Goblin’s large pulse laser burned armor from the Vindicator’s right arm.

Lauder checked his tactical display.  He was relieved that the militia seemed to be retreating.  He had one tank with motive system damage.  Jack’s Catapult was looking worse for wear.  If Walther’s Marauder took a good hit in its right torso it would go down as it would fail its extra-light engine check.  The Harasser needed to retreat and one of the Maxims had a nearly open side.

He hated the idea of holding the area.  But that salvage needed to be protected.  Its loss would be a major military and financial blow to the unit.  Enemy reinforcements were likely inbound and that salvage needed to be moved.

The crew of the disabled Goblin abandoned their vehicle and chased after the infantry platoon. Lauder was tempted to light them up, but did not order Cranes to fire.  “Vivaldi Five to Constrictor One, are we going to call for our recovery vehicles or abandon the salvage?  Should we hold or go after them?”

After a few moments of waiting, Jack responded.  “Constrictor One to Vivaldi Five, I will call for our salvage vehicles.  I would have Two and Three observe the retreating militia.”  “Copy that.  Vivaldi Five to Two and Three, shadow the retreating militia as best as possible.  Do not engage though unless they are a threat.”  “Three copies, Two follow me!”

“Constrictor One to Gray Seven, move your group into my area and grab the Sierra!”  “Gray Seven copies, we are ten minutes out and inbound.”

Too much time thought Jack.  Our main enemy has been the militia’s Thirty Seventh Armor battalion.  We have hit them pretty good.  But we need to get out of here preferably with the salvage.

As the Regulator and Pegasus swung around the mountain they opened fire on the retreating militia infantry with missiles, medium pulse laser and gauss rifle.  The platoon died in the explosion.  It was not a pretty sight, but SRM infantry could eat armor for breakfast if the infantry was in cover and the armor was foolish enough to get within range.

“Vivaldi Two to all units, enemy infantry platoon neutralized.”  “Five to Two, good work.  See where the rest of them go to.”  Lauder expected them to go out the way that they came.  That way, was to the southeast.  But the enemy seldom did what was expected.  This time they were being smart and cutting their losses.  “Vivaldi Five to Eight and Constrictors One through Four prepare move south and set up a perimeter around the Sierra.  Thirteen and Sixteen recover Owls One through Three and Seven through Nine.”  “Eight copies.”  “Constrictor One copies.”  “Thirteen copies.”  “Owl One moving.”  “Owl Seven moving.”

“Rio, move us to the south off of the hill to where the salvage is,” said Lauder.  The Myrmidon moved down the hill.  So, did Smart’s Striker.  The mechs moved with them.

The Pegasus and Regulator moved over a small hill to where the salvage was.  “Vivaldi Three to all units, looks like they left the salvage alone.”  Why of course they did, they saw a few inoperable mechs lying on their backs and went after the tanks defending them, thought Lauder.

Third and Fourth Platoons moved up the hill out of the forest.  The two Maxims moved to pick them up.  Both Marauders moved to the southern base of the hill.  The Catapult covered the withdrawal of Smart’s damaged Striker.

“Vivaldi Fifteen to all units, I have Owl Six, request orders!”  “Vivaldi Five to Fifteen, how are the casualties…”  “All of them are KIA, Melsome, said Owen.”  Shit, thought Melsome.  “Vivaldi Fifteen to Five, no wounded.  All of the casualties are KIA.”

“Vivaldi Twelve to Owls One through Three and Seven to Nine.  Get in!”  The infantry piled into the Maxims.  The Maxims then moved southwest down the hill.
Lauer checked his display.  It would be good to have the two Marauders move south to secure the salvage back up by the Striker, Myrmidom, Maxims and infantry.  “Vivaldi Five to Eight and Constrictors Two and Four.  Move south to secure salvage.  Constrictor One secure the western side of the hill.  Constrictor Three secure the eastern side.”  “Constrictor One wilco.”  “Three Wilco.”

Both Marauders moved south.  The Striker and Myrmidon trailing behind as they had to snake their way down the hill.  Wong jump jetted the Vindicator to the north into a small forest to get into a better over-watch position.

From his position on the hill Jack could see the enemy armor column retreating to the south.  “Constrictor One to Vivaldi Five, I can see the enemy armor retreating to the south in a line.  They are about a kilometer out and heading to the south.”  “Five copies.  Vivaldis Two and Three hold up.  The enemy tanks are just on the far side of the rise in front of you.”  “Three copies, holding.”  The last thing Lauder wanted was to take more damage.

Lauder was glad that they were retreating.  Two hundred and fifty meters to the south east of his current position he could see the four enemy tanks smoldering and further to the south was the remains of the enemy infantry platoon.  He watched the two Marauders move up onto two small hills on the northwestern and northeastern sides of where the salvage had been left.

Vivaldis Thirteen and Sixteen moved off the hill and started to the south.  The Pegasus moved to the west and the Regulator moved east, but stayed behind a hill.  “Vivaldi Five to Eight, head southwest.  I am going up the small rise to the south,” said Lauder as Rio moved the Myrmidon past the burning hulks.

As Rio moved the Myrmidon onto a small hill, Lauder could see the enemy armor retreating to the south.  The important thing now was to secure the area for the salvage vehicles.  A part of him wanted to give chase, but that would have been foolish.  Next, recover the mechs.  If sufficient enemy reinforcements arrived they would have to abandon the salvage.

It would be just a few minutes before the salvage vehicles arrived and hopefully after not too long they would be able to move the loot to another location.

Stinky Lakes
Chapter 15

Near Osu Refinery, east of the Broken Shin Mountains, Continent Odate, Scheat I, Scheat System,
Benjamin Military District, Draconis Combine
February 6, 3066 0530 Hours Local Standardized time

The attack force had moved to the target area.  The engines of the Corsair and Stingray Aerospace fighters could be heard to the northwest.  They were flying below radar.
Jack had felt foreboding.  So, he was going to be cautious.  Well as cautious as a mercenary commander raiding the Draconis Combine could be once committed.  The Draconis Combine was a better target than the Clan Occupation Zone and after having been a part of Task Force Serpent he had no desire to return.
He listened to his fear, but before he even left Kentares he had listened to his greed.  That avarice would now have to be very tempered by fear as one major mistake would cost him and his command dearly.
The attack force was about a minute from the target area while advancing at just over forty kilometers per hour.  Which put them at about two and a half kilometers from the target.  First lance was about half a minute ahead and would be scouting the area.
John Smith and his wingman Ned Jones had flown nap of the earth, staying below radar and skirting terrain to avoid being detected by radar.  They had stayed at subsonic speeds.  No reason to announce themselves with a sonic boom even though they flew mostly over uninhabited areas.  The Kamakura Valley had several farms and then they flew through the volcanic Broken Shin mountain range.  Several cinder cones reached up to claw the two fighters from the sky.
As Able neared the target area Smith realized that he had came in with too much altitude and nosed down as he caught sight of the refinery in a small bowl shaped depression with a small volcanic vent in the center.  There were two lakes to the south separated by a spur.
He punched up the magnification on the forward camera and got a quick glimpse of the defenders.  It looked like a lance of Goblins and a lance of Scimitars patrolling around the facility and he assumed that there was infantry in the buildings.
Smith’s voice came in over the radio.  “Hawk one to supporting units, we have found the target.  I have a lance of Goblins and a lance of Scimitars patrolling it.”  Jones spoke next.  “Hawk two to all units, I have four Saladins about a hundred meters north of the facility behind some trees and three heavy hover APCs to the north west.
“Kamaitachi One to Hawks, copy that, begin your attack runs!”  Said Jack with a hint of eagerness in his voice.  They had been on planet for a week and half and he wanted to be done and gone.
Smith pushed the throttle forward a little and nosed down.  He turned west and pushed forward on the stick and dropped two bombs on a building below him before pulling up and Jones did the same.  The flew above the flank of the small cone and then flew over the hover transports before turning south.  They heard the explosions from their bombs but did not know if they were hits.  Their quarry was certainly awake now if they had not been before.  The fighters flew south and then east to setup another attack run.
Eight hundred meters south southwest of the refinery the three hover tanks from the Eighty-Fifth moved into the depression.  The rain and pre-dawn light limited their visibility to three hundred and fifty meters.  Despite that, Master Sergeant Wheeler had a job to do.  The rain was an unexpected consideration, but the low light was not and in a few minutes if they were around that long would improve.
Wheeler glanced at his sensors.  The cone was about half a kilometer ahead and there was a small spur that extended from its southern side.  It would be a good place to go to in an attempt to get a better line of sight on the refinery and the defenders would have limited lines of sight on his lance.  “Aka Manto two to three and four, stay close.  We are going to head onto the spur to the north and then head northwest.  Try to stay outside of three hundred meters from the refinery.”  The three hover tanks moved down off the slope towards the spur.  Their fans spraying rainwater.  The crews of the tanks could not hear the rain over the sounds of their tank’s engines.  The smell from the geysers and hot springs did enter the tank.  Wheeler hated the smell.  The mechjocks could get heat stroke and so could the tankers, but the tanks needed the outside air so they got that wonderful smell.
Smith fired on one of the refinery buildings and Jones strafed a Saracen.  They turned to fly around the volcanic cone again.  The building collapsed and the Saracen stopped cold as its directional fan had been melted into slag.  The both nosed up and began to loop around for another attack run.
As First lance moved onto the spur, Wheeler could see a Goblin and a Saracen just over four hundred meters to the north.  Past them was the refinery.  “Reeves give that Goblin some gauss!”  He said to his gunner who swung the turret to the right and fired.  The round flew north and crushed armor on the front of the Goblin.  A flight of LRMs from a Saracen blasted into the ground at near the Pegasus.  Wheeler checked his displays, the rear display showed the attack force mechs cresting the hill to the south.  Alpha lance was due south and Beta lance was to the east.
First lance split up and moved northwest up the spur.  Remembering the announcement of the lance of Salaldins, Wheeler decided to be a good little senior NCO and remind his subordinates.  “Aka Manto Two to Three through Four, watch out for those Saladins.  If we see something isolated and weak then we will bring it down.  Other than that, stick to the mission and let Kamaitachis and Hawks do their jobs.”  “Three copies.”  “Four wilco.”
Wheeler checked his displays again.  The rear one was facing the refinery and he could see three Saracens had moved to the south.  “Aka Manto One to all units, I have three Saracens that have moved to the south of the refinery.”  “Kamaitachi One copies,” said Jack.
“Kamaitachi One to Two through four head north and get up on the hill.  Five through Eight watch our flanks and backsides.  Hawks, did either of you see where those Saladins went to?”
Smith was concentrating on his attack run.  His lasers slicing into a Saladin’s side.  Jones attacked the stationary Saracen.  Light LRM fire chased after the Corsair but fell short of the speeding ASF.
“Hawk Two to Kamaitachi One, they are just northwest of the refinery and heading southwest.”  “Kamaitachi One copies.  Kamaitachi One to Two through Four, we are going to head north and engage the refinery and its defenders.  Five to Eight head west and support Aka Mantos.  Keep those Saladins off of our back sides”
Beta lance was on the far side of the hotsprings lakes.  “Kamaitachi Five to Six through Eight, head west and move into positions to support Aka Mantos.”
Beta lance moved east trying to stay out of the lake.  The Nightsky was the furthest north and the three Saracens charged it with missiles streaming from their turrets and exploding just short of the battlemech.
The Regulator swerved as Anderson, Wheeler’s driver struggled to get the hovertank up and over the hill.  Reeves discharged the gauss rifle once again.  The three hover tanks moved northwest.  Alpha lance, advanced north down the slope and up the southern spur from the small volcanic vent.  Fourth lance trailed behind Alpha.
The Saracens moved south and sent LRMs after the Nightsky.  Beta lance fired back but missed.
After flying over the enemy hovertanks and First lance Smith called out over the radio, but his warning would be too late.  “Hawk One to Aka Manto Two, do not go around that hill there are four Saladins and three heavy hover APCs there.”  Shit thought Wheeler.  “Aka Manto Two to Three and Four, head south now!”  The three hovertanks turned violently to the south slamming their occupants into their restraining harnesses.
Of course, the moment they came down the hill three Saladins moved to the south coming within one hundred meters of Lola’s Harasser.  Which swung its turret in line and fired its lasers.  So, did both of the Marauders which had moved to the top of the spur.
Wheeler watched in slow motion as an AC-20 shell blasted into the side of the Harasser, tearing it in half as Reeves sent a gauss rifle slug flying past it.  One of Walther’s PPCs burned into the middle Saladin, destroying it.
Wheeler barely resisted the urge to hit something.  Now was most definitely not the time.  “Aka Manto Two to all units, Four is down.”  Jack heard the call after watching a flight of his LRMs blast armor from a Goblin.  “Kamaitachi One copies.  Pull back Aka Mantos.  Kamaitachis Five through Eight, head west with Greens One through Three.  If you can deploy a squad of Isonades and look for survivors.”
The Corsair and Stingray strafed one of the fuel tanks causing it to explode and starting a fire.  It must have not been full as it did not burn much the aerospace fighter’s beam weapons vaporizing the fuel.  Plus, the rain kept the fire under control.
After taking a few missile hits from a Saracen and sending a wasted laser shot after it, Vernon responded.  “Kamaitachi Five copies.  Six through Eight follow me.”  Beta lance moved west to the Maxims which were waiting for the mechs to advance so that they could do so.
Wheeler and Ganner moved their hover tanks to the south.  Both crews wanting to fight, but listening to the wisdom of their fear instead of their anger.  Wheeler watched the Saladins head north and back around the hill for cover.  “Aka Manto Two to Three, stay close and do not pursue.”  “Three copies.”
“Green One to Greens, head one hundred meters west and provide LRM support for Greens if you have a bead on the enemy tanks.”  The Maxims moved west.
Alpha lance moved further to the north.  Fitz moved around the top and almost crashed into the left side of Jack’s Catapult.  But he pulled the controls in time to avoid a collision.  The other Marauder and the Vindicator headed around the east side and came up to the back right of the Catapult.
Jack began to target the Saracens as they headed north at flank speed, but was not able to get a bead.  After noticing the Goblins had moved behind cover he fired at one of the buildings in the refinery.  Fitz fired at a Goblin that tried to move to cover, it succeeded and Fitz missed.  The rest of Alpha lance blasted into several buildings in the refinery.  While Wong and Walther’s mechs were peppered with LRMs from the Saracens.
Jones burned more armor from the stuck Saracen as he flew over it.  Jones noticed three heavy APCs attempting to unload their infantry in a small forest, he tried to get a bead but could not and pulled off.
Vernon watched the Maxims move to the west down the shallow drainage.  He followed.  “Kamataichi Five to Six through Eight, form wedge behind Seven and head west.”  The Nightsky took point with a Phoenix Hawk on its five and seven o’clock positions with the Spider far rear left.  They moved down the drainage just ahead of the Maxims.  He could see smoke rising from the knoll three hundred meters ahead.  It marked the location of Lola’s downed Harasser.  “Kamaitachi Five to Aka Manto Two, head north west to that hill half a kilometer to the northwest and tell us what you see.”
“Aka Manto Two copies, you heard him Three.”  Both hovertanks moved.
Jack moved Alpha lance north along the base of the hill.  He noticed the Goblins pull back to the north.  Unable to get a lock he fired his LRM racks at one of the refinery buildings and his lance mates each choose a target and fired as well.  Which was promptly turned into rubble.  Fitz blasted a large fuel tank and Wong demolished a building.
A pair of bombs from the Corsair devalued a building but failed to bring it down.  Jones lit up a building with his lasers turning it into a rubble heap.  They then turned west.

Jack checked the tactical map.  To the north west was the hill his lance was on followed by a small valley that twisted to go west to east and then some small hills and ridges.  If Beta, Fourth and First lances continue heading north, then they would be in a choke point and that screamed ambush alley.  “Kamaitachi One to Aka Mantos, Greens and Kamaitachis Five through Eight, be careful as you are heading north.  North of the vent is a good place to get ambushed.”
“Kamaitachi Five copies.”  “Green One acknowledges.”  “Aka Manto Two copies.”  The two hover tanks moved west out over the lake and headed north to come around the west side of the hill where the remnants of Lola’s Harasser sat with a smoking hole in its right side.
Jack moved his lance about ninety meters north east keeping on the base of the vent hill.  He could see the Saracens move north into the cover of the refinery.  He knew the Goblins were about three to four hundred meters to the north and behind cover.  They could not have gone far as their top speed was the same as his Catapult.  It looked like the militia was just letting him pound the refinery.  Which was not…
As he flew west, Smith dipped the nose and fired his lasers at a heavy hover APC and then he noticed the mechs about two hundred meters to the north of it.  “Hawk One to all units, one lance of enemy battlemechs to the north.  Two hit them if you can,” said Smith before he dipped the left wing and pulled back on the stick to turn the Corsair to the south.  Jones’s Stingray slipped north east and flew above the mechs and fired his lasers at a Jenner.
And that was exactly what I was thinking, thought Jack as he loosed another flight of LRMs at a building in the refinery which his lance followed suit sending PPCs at other buildings.  One of the buildings collapsed.
The Catapult’s exterior microphones picked up the sound of several helicopters.  Crap, now I have to deal with air assets during my withdrawal.  They have moved reinforcements into the area and it is time for me to retreat.  I have already lost one unit.  No reason to lose any more if possible.  Beta, First and Fourth lances can cover the recovery and Alpha can help fight off any flankers from the east.  If I engage the Goblins the Saracens will likely flank around and hit us in the butt.  But if I pull back it will be harder for them to flank my lance or the recovery team, thought Jack.
“Kamaitachi One to Aka Mantos Two and Three, Greens and Kamaitachi Five through Eight.  Setup a perimeter around Aka Manto Four and try to see if…  Anyone is alive or recover their bodies if possible.  Kamaitachis One through Four will watch your back sides.  Two through Four move one hundred meters to the south and keep that knoll behind us.”  “Wilco!”
“Four to One, the Goblins just moved south towards us, but are below the crest of the hill,” said Fitz before moving his Marauder to the south.  Jack backed the Catapult up and the rest of Alpha lance did so also.
Checking his displays Vernon knew that he had to advance to the west and then north into the valley to allow the Maxims to move to the wreck of the Harasser and try to recover the bodies.  First lance would have to swing west a bit to try and see up the hill four hundred and thirty meters to the northwest as it was a good spot for more ambushers to hide.
“Kamaitachi Five to Four to Eight head two hundred and fifty meters to the north west up the valley.  Aka Mantos Two and Three head west and try to see up that ridge.  Greens head to the site and deploy Isonades One through Nine!”  “Wilco,” said Wheeler.  “Copy,” said Lieutenant Fitz.  Davies led the way up the valley.  The Regulator and Pegasus swung west and the Maxims moved to the site of the downed Harasser and deployed their infantry.  The Regulator and Pegasus crossed the lake and onto the shore and stopped near a high column.  Wheeler checked his displays and did not see anything up the valley.  He did not dare advance any further.
Seeing the Saracens move to the eastern side of the refinery Jack fired a volley of thirty missiles at the lead hover tank even though his targeting and tracking system gave a low probability of a hit.  Less than a third of the volley hit, blasting armor from the machines right side and blasting away the side of the skirt.  The tank crashed to the ground.  The rest of Alpha lance held their fire as the targets were just out of range.
Vernon could see three attack helicopters six hundred meters to the north.  Where are the enemy mechs and the Saladins?  They could have moved behind the ridge to my west.  I should not advance very far to the north.  His thought was interrupted by Davies.  “Kamaitachi Seven to Five, I have contact with a heavy APC half a click to the north and it is loading infantry.”  “Five copies.”  I doubt there is just a single APC to the north.  I would bet good money it has friends.
As Smith and Jones flew north they dropped several bombs on the three Goblins that were moving towards Alpha lance.  The bombs blasted armor from the tops of the Goblins, but did not destroy them.  Smith lost too much altitude and barely avoided a collision with one of the just arrived attack helicopters.  He flew under it knowing an attempt to attack it would make him crash into it.
The Striker infantry platoons hurried out of their Maxims and setup a perimeter.  Owen led his platoon towards the downed Harasser with a smoking hole in its right side.  They swept the areas to the left and right with their rifles.  Then setup a perimeter around the downed tank.  A single fire team approached with the vain hope of finding their mounted friends alive.
Vernon had positioned his lance at the mouth of the valley.  The eastern side led up into the small volcanic vent and to the west it went up a ridge that led down into a valley where he believed a lance of enemy battlemechs supported by some light armor was.  Four Cavalry Attack helicopters flew past him.  “Kamaitachi Five to One through Four, you have four attack helicopters heading right for your back.  Six through Eight, move north sixty meters,” said Vernon as he stepped the Phoenix Hawk onto the western slope of the vent while firing the lasers in his mech’s right arm at the sweep helicopter.  The Nightsky moved north up the valley, Brown moved her Phoenix Hawk onto the western slope and Malachi sprinted to the top of the western hill.
Looking to her ten o’clock, Malachi’s eyes opened wide with fear.  There was a Saladin just one hundred and forty meters away.  She snapped a shot at it with her medium lasers.  Then realizing that three hundred meters to the north of her was a lance of enemy light to heavy mechs.  “Kamaitachi Seven to all units, I have contact with a Saladin one hundred and forty meters north west of my position.  Also, Grasshopper, Gladiator and Jenner three hundred meters to the north behind the next hill.”  Then a Jenner dashed south to back up the Saladins.
The Spider fell and Malachi realized that she had taken a major hit to her mech.  Armor on the left torso was crushed.  The impact knocked the wind out of her and after she was able to breathe again she realized the Spider had lost its right arm and all of the armor on the right front torso.  Well, it was better than losing a leg or being shot out of her mech.  She got the mech back on its feet and dashed down the hill.
Jack saw and heard the explosions just over two hundred meters away, but it did not stop the Goblins from cresting the hill and opening fire on his lance.  Then the call from Vernon and a moment later he saw two Saracens dashing to the south.  He fired his LRMs and medium lasers at the center Goblin.  Half of his missiles hit and one laser which relieved the Goblin of a good portion of its armor its AMS pitifully chewed a few missiles out of the air.  The Goblin’s large pulse laser burned a good portion of armor from the Catapult’s right torso.  He also sustained hits to the right leg.  The other two Goblins took hits from Walther and Wong.  Fitz’s Marauder was hit by several SRMs from the helicopters and he fired his PPC in attempt to drive off the attackers.
As Smith flew to the south he flew over the enemy mechs but resisted the urge to attack them as the Saladin near Malachi’s Spider was a greater threat.  He dropped his last four bombs on it.  Flying behind Smith, Jones nosed down and dropped the last of his ordinance on the Gladiator and pulled up.
Wheeler could see the Jenner on the hill.  “Reeves, kill that damn Jenner,” he said as his gunner brought the gauss rifled turret to bear and fired.  Reeves had too much lead and the round flew across the light mech’s path of travel and embedded itself in the dirt.  “Anderson move us to the west around that tall pillar!”  Reeves drove the Regulator around the pillar and the Pegasus followed.
Alpha lance moved slightly to the west and the Goblins attempted to chase.  The attack helicopters circled behind Alpha lance two of them attacked the southernmost Maxim, blasting armor from it, but it did not go down.  They fired on the Goblins with the exception of Fitz who was intent on frying at least one of the helicopters.  “Green Three to all units, I have taken some damage to my Maxim’s steering system, I am no longer able to travel at top speed!”  “Green One copies.”
“Kamaitachi Five to Six through Eight, pull back about a hundred meters.  Seven are you okay?”  “Seven is missing a right arm and a nursing a damaged ego!”  Vernon laughed.  If she has gall she can get through this.  “Good to hear Seven!”  Beta lance backed up.  Four hundred meters to the north a Grasshopper, Gladiator and Jenner jump jetted down the ridge to the north west.  Vernon fired both extended ranged large lasers at the Grasshopper, which Davies also attacked.  Brown fired at one of the helicopters.  They missed.
Both Marauders lost more armor from hits from the large pulse lasers and short ranged missiles from the Goblins.  Jack fired all of his weapons at one of the Goblins.  Its AMS chewed a few missiles out of the air, but not enough to prevent its demise.  The Goblin exploded.
Brown’s Phoenix Hawk took a few LRM hits, but her armor remained was not breached.
After attacking one of the Goblins, Jones lost control of his aircraft as he pushed it too hard and too fast.  He struggled with the controls while having at least one of his hands staying close to the ejection lever.  He lost airspeed but was able roll so the cockpit was facing up and the wings were level.  He twisted the thrust vectoring controls to direct thrust down and he made the worst landing of his life.  The Corsair had lost a lot of armor and he began a systems check.  The good news was that that lights were still on even though he had taken a lot of damage.  His lower back really hurt and he found he could move his legs.
Jack looked at his tactical overlay.  One of the Maxims had lost armor, the Harasser had been destroyed, Malachi’s Spider was missing an arm.  The infantry should almost be done in their attempt to recover the bodies of the Harasser’s crew if possible.  They had destroyed a few tanks and buildings.  But there was no doubt in his mind that more enemy reinforcements were on the way.  The militia would need a good kick in the face to break their momentum so that he could withdraw.
He inhaled deeply before speaking the heavy neurohelmet pressing into the shoulders of his coolant vest.  “Kamaitachi One to Two, engage those attack helicopters behind us.  Three and Four form up on me we are going to engage the Goblins and then head through the caldera to the west and engage the enemy mechs and tanks to the west.  MOVE IT!”
Chief Walther hated sky lining.  It exposed his poor sweet Marauder to too much ungentleness towards it.  Of course, he would never saw so aloud.  He trusted Major Klein.  He snapped an erPPC shot into the nose of an attack helicopter, but it flew on.  He did better with his medium pulse lasers which burned into another helicopter’s fuselage and exploded its fuel tank!  His large pulse laser burned through the air where the helicopter had been.
A Goblin’s SRMs flew past the Catapult’s left arm and its large pulse laser burned into the mech’s shoulder.  Jack fired the Catapult’s jump jets and brought it northwest towards the top of the volcanic hill.  Fitz and Wong followed.  Walther turned his Marauder to the west and crested the spur.  Jack fired all of his weapons at the Goblin nearest him.  The medium lasers missed low but fifteen missiles blasted into it and turned the Goblin into scrap!  Fitz and Wong traded shots with the other two Goblins.  Fitz’s Marauder took missile hits from the attack helicopters.
Wheeler watched the Saladins speed down the slope and towards First and Beta lances.  Ganner was already ahead of him and pursued them coming up behind the highly mobile Autocannon-20 transport but the enemy hover tank moved down under where the two Eighty Fifth Tanks could fire.  Anderson followed the Pegasus.  Wheeler looked over at Reeves.  “Hit the tank that Ganner does not target, fire!”  She did not have a shot on the Saladin, but she did have a shot at one of the Heavy Hover APCs that moved past Vernon’s Phoenix Hawk as he targeted the enemy mechs.  The slug hit and smashed in the front of the enemy HHAPC!  Enemy infantry dashed out the back of the machine after it skidded to a halt.
Brown’s Phoenix Hawk was at the base of the westernmost hill where the far lake ended and was checking her displays when both Saladins appeared in her rear display.  The huge bores of their autocannons drawing her eye!  Instinctively she fired the Pixie’s jump jets and spun the mech in the air and landed on the hill to the back let of the Saladins.  “Kamaitachi Eight to all units, two Saladins right by me, I am engaging.  Green One take evasive action!”  It was too late, the Saladins fired and one of their shells blasted all the armor from the Maxim’s turret.  She fired at the Saladin but missed.
“Green one to all units, I just lost all the armor on my turret!”  The Maxims fired at the Saladins.

Vernon wanted to double back, but had moved north onto the volcanic hill to get a better shot at the approaching mechs.  An enemy Jenner started down the hill towards the valley.  Davies fired the Nightsky’s jump jets and landed just twenty meters south of the Jenner and fired all but his large pulse laser.  The Jenner and Grasshopper fired back.  Vernon ignored his urge to target the Grasshopper and fired his lasers at the Jenner Davies was after.
Vernon watched the Jenner’s left leg lash out and smash armor from the Nightsky’s right leg.  The Nighstky faltered for a moment before stepping forward and lashing out with its hatchet and severing the Jenner’s left arm which fell to the ground and landed with a loud thump.
“Isonade Two to all units, there are no survivors in the wreck.  We recovered what we could.  Need extraction.”  “Green One copies, Greens load them up,” said Lieutenant Fitz.  The Maxims moved to the positions of the infantry.
Vernon saw the destruction of the Heavy Hover APC to his right on his side display.  He had been too focused on the enemy mechs and had not noticed the APCs.  The destroyed Heavy Hover APC had its front caved in and its infantry were getting out in a hurry.  “Kamaitachi Five to Seven and Eight, pull back a bit,” said Vernon as he jump jetted to the south and noticed the two Saladins approaching with the Regulator and Pegasus giving chase.  The four enemy mechs moved south with the exception of the Jenner with the amputated arm which peeled off to the west.
There was an explosion on the western lake.  Jones flew south and attacked the Gladiator as did Brown and Davies.  It fell and its comrades moved to support it.  After regaining its feetm it retreated to the north.
“Isonade Nine to all units, enemy HHAPC has moved to within a hundred meters northeast of my position and deployed infantry, open fire boys,” said Lieutenant Pimental.  The two infantry forces and their transports traded shots.
Jack kept his lance moving to the north.  The irritating Saracens had moved to within two hundred meters of Alpha lance.  One of the Goblins moved down the hill to cover although the severely damaged one was not able to get away.  He could see PPC, laser and missile fire from Fitz and Wong going towards the lead Saracen, he went for the sweep hovertank.  They hit it burning off the hovertank’s front skirt and it skidded to a halt on the ground. The Catapult and Marauder took a few missile hits for their trouble.  Walther hit one of the attack helicopters with a PPC, but it did not go down.  The attack helicopters retreated to the north.
“Hawk One to all units, I had to crash land.  I think that I can get this old bird back in the air!”
“Kamaitachi One to Hawk One, copy that.  It will be hard to provide you exfiltration if you cannot get that bird off of the ground.”  “Why thanks,” said Smith as he carefully applied thrust.  He forced himself to not hold his breath and applied thrust.  The hull scrapped on the ground and the noise from the engine increased as he moved the throttle forward.  Then less than gracefully the aerospace fighter rose off of the ground.  “Very good girl,” he whispered to the Corsair.  “Hawk One to all units, I am airborne again!”
“Kamaitachi One to Three and Four, fall back with me to Two’s position.  All units, form up to the south of the large hill and prepare to withdraw,” said Jack as he jump jetted the Catapult a hundred and twenty meters to the south.  Beta lance moved southeast.  Fourth lance loaded up the infantry and proceeded to the southeast.  The enemy mechs moved after them with the Saladin charging in and nearly hitting Brown’s Phoenix Hawk.  The Saladin popped off an autocannon burst at one of the Maxims, missed and then backed up to the north behind the protection of its battlemech allies.  Beta lance was also within weapons range of the militia infantry company that had deployed on the base of the hill.  Their HHAPCs retreated to the north.
Jack swung the Catapult’s torso to the right and fired his medium lasers at the Saracen at the base of the hill but only one of his lasers hit. His lance mates attacked the other Saracen and a Goblin.  None of the tanks went down and the left arm of Fitz’s Marauder lost the last of its armor and its PPC soon after.  “Kamaitachi Four to all units, I have severe armor damage.  My left arm is bare and its PPC is down!”
“Kamaitachi Five to Seven and Eight, target the Grasshopper.”  Weapons fire was exchanged.  Davies’s Nightsky took a pounding and fell.  The pursuing Saladin took a few hits from the Maxims but kept coming, but at half speed.  The Pegasus sprayed enemy infantry with SRMs and pulse laser fire which made several of them die for the honor of the Dragon!  A gauss slug from the Regulator missed the Jenner and flew into the ground at its feet.
After getting the Nightsky on its feet and having an Autocannnon-20 shell detonate near its feet, Davies spoke over the radio.  “Kamaitachi Seven to all units, my right torso is almost breached.  I am retreating!”  “Five copies, get out of there!”  As Davies ran southeast he sustained a few hits from medium lasers.  Burning away more of his precious armor.
Jones strafed an immobile Saladin to the north of the volcanic hill and it exploded.  “Hawk Two to all units, scratch one Saladin!”
Alpha lance had moved to where the volcanic hill’s southern spur began.  The Maxims streaked past two hundred meters to the south of them, eager to get away from the fast approaching militia.  Beta and First lance followed them while attempting to apply suppression fire to the militia to the west.
After taking a few long ranged missile hits to his center torso and right arm.  Jack torso twisted to the right and fired his lasers at the Saracen again.  Walther fired at a Goblin to the north.  Fitz and Wong fired at the mechs to the west.
“Aka Manto Two to Three, target the Jenner,” Said Wheeler as Reeves fired the gauss rifle at the enemy light mech.  Both the gauss slug and SRMs missed the enemy infantry.  But missile fire from the Maxims slayed a few fire teams of them.
“Kamaitachi Five to Seven and Eight, target the Grasshopper,” said Vernon as he sent murderous light from his lasers at the heavy battlemech.  Beta lance missed the heavy mech.  But Fitz nailed its torso with a PPC.
As he flew south, Jones fired his medium lasers and PPC at a Jenner, but only the PPC hit.
Jack checked his displays.  His strike force was pulling back to the south.  Enemy mechs and infantry were to the west and closing.  There was a hill to the south west and then the large geyser lake, to the south was another hill with a spur that led up to another hill. It would be best to send the Maxims to the far side of the spur where they all had initially entered the area.  Have Beta and First lance move southwest so that they would be able to setup a cross fire zone with Alpha lance and have first lance sweep around the western hill to attack the side or rear of the militia.
“Kamaitachi One to Two to Four, move to the base of the spur.  Five, Six and Eight head between the two hills.  Aka Mantos head south and then west around the western hill.  Kamaitachi Seven stick with Greens and support them.”
The Maxim’s followed Agnes Maxim while firing a few volleys from their aft LRM launchers at one of the militia infantry platoons.  Malachi jump jetted onto a hill to the south.  Alpha lance moved to the south off of the spur and Beta lance moved south between the hills.  First lance followed and past them and moved onto the western hill.
As Smith pushed more power from his engine the Corsair rose further into the air, ten, twenty, thirty, sixty and then one hundred meters.  He gradually changed the thrust from downward to rearward and the fighter flew forward.  He flew over the retreating Gladiator and then noticed two newly arrived lances of hover tanks and two attack helicopters.  “Hawk One to all units, I have two lance of enemy hover tanks and two helicopters that are at the base of the big hill and heading south.”  “Hawk Two copies, heading north to engage.  Good to see you flying again One.  Though you might regret it when the technicians have to repair your poor little ASF!”  Smith laughed.
Jones turned north and strafed the lead hover tank with his lasers and then turned left to fly over the enemy formation which opened fire on him.  Molten metal streamed down the front of the lead hover tank which looked like it had a very painful nose bleed.
More hover tanks!  Well, that is just great thought Jack as he remembering another clandestine raid while he was in the Eridani Light Horse and barely got his lance away from a company of DC hovertanks.  Thank the engineers, even though their judgement could be flawed at times for jump jets and geology for uneven terrain!
The enemy mechs did not fall for the little trap that Jack set.  But they pulled back a bit to the west, but were still able to support the infantry.  Two HHAPCs moved to pick up the infantry.
Vernon saw the enemy mechs fall back as he moved between the hills.  “Kamaitachi Five to Seven and Eight, engage the Jenner.”  He said the moment Davies fired on the Grasshopper.  Vernon triggered one of his extended ranged large lasers at the Jenner and Brown fired on it as well.  The Pegasus fired off a flight of twelve SRMs at one of the infantry platoons before moving behind cover.  The volley missed low and a medium laser from one of the Jenners stripped the armor from the turret of the Pegasus.
The battlemechs traded mostly ineffectual fire at each other.
Wheeler checked his displays.  The attack force seemed to be withdrawing in good order.  But if he continued with following Klein’s orders, both his and Ganner’s tanks would be exposed on the far-left flank with no weapons fire to support them.  “Aka Manto Two to Kamaitachi One, request permission to head south as continuing around is just asking to be taken out.”
As Jack backed his Catapult up to the south he heard Wheeler’s question.  It was sensible and there was no reason to risk the loss of another hovertank.  He also saw two attack helicopters flying to the south.  “Kamaitachi One to Aka Manto Two, permission granted, just stay close to Kamaitachis Five through Eight.”  “Will do, thanks One.”
Alpha lance moved further south with the rest of the attack force.  Davies broiled away a few militia infantry with a hit from his extended ranged large laser.  Jack jump jetted several times to the south.  Beta, First and Fourth lances also moved to the south.  How is Smith doing? Wondered Jack not wanting to lose any more people or machines.  “Kamaitachi One to Hawk One, what is your status?”  “Hawk One to Kamaitachi One, I have a lot of irregularities in my thrust and some fuel leakage.”  “Copy that, get back to base.”  “Copy that.”  Smith turned east and pushed the throttle forward.
“Kamaitachi Three to all units, I have several J. Edgars and several Scimitars half a kilometer north northwest of my position and closing.”  Jack could see two of the helicopters had come back and were flying to the north of his position.
Both sides traded shots.  The Maxims made one of the Saracens a mobility kill.
Alpha lance moved on top of a hill to provide covering fire for the Maxims, Beta and first lances.  Looking north to the spur that Alpha lance had just left, Jack could see several hovertanks moving up onto it and four that were to the east and heading south.
“Kamaitachi One to Greens One through Three, you are clear to withdraw and rendezvous with use at the rally point.”  “Green One copies, thanks Kamaitachi do not say too long.”  Jack chuckled.  He would most likely not be staying in the area much longer, but getting the hover tanks to not stay with them would be harder not to mention the two attack helicopters.
“Green Two to all units, I have contact with four J. Edgars three hundred meters north of my position and closing.”  Jack checked to his right and noticed them as well after the Maxims moved south off of the ridge.  Fitz was almost to the top of the ridge and was hit by an LRM volley.  Once he made it up then the mechs could break contact with the hover tanks.
Jack started to track the light hover tanks but choose to hold his fire as he only had six volleys for his LRMs left and of course that ammunition was in his already battered right torso.  Then he swung his torso back to center and loosed a volley at the stricken Saracen just east of the spur.
“Kamaitachi One to Two through Eight attack whatever you have the best chance of hitting. Then retreat off the ridge and proceed to the rendezvous,” said Jack as he watched the Saracen turn into a fireball!  Walther hit a Saracen with a PPC.  The Spider took an autocannon hit to its center torso.  “Kamaitachi One to Seven, retreat we will cover you!”
The Saracen and Scimitars moved onto the spur to the north and the lance of J. Edgars moved southwest towards the battlemechs.  Both lances of hover tanks opened fire.  The battlemechs did also.  The Saracen was stopped cold and the Scimitars sustained hits.  Their autocannons missing their targets.  One of the J. Edgars nailed Fitz’s Marauder with its SRMs but the older design did not fall.
The Eighty Fifth moved down the ridge and headed for their rendezvous point.  The militia helicopters staying just outside of weapons range, but not too far away that they could not see their quarry.  They broke off pursuit after a few minutes of having to deal with Jones’ attacks on them which were hampered by increasing rains.  Jones gained more altitude to fly above the bad weather as flying NOE during heavy rains was asking for a Darwin Award.

Second and Third lances successfully withdrew with 1LT. Mackenzie and the Shoho was able to flee the field but lost a good portion of its armor.

February 7, 3066
The Shoho lifts off with the Eighty-Fifth on board and heads to the jumpship Alois at Scheat’s Nadir charge point.  During the ten-day flight the Eighty-Fifth makes repairs to its ground units.

February 17, 3066
The Shoho docked with exfiltration jump ship and jumped into the Xhosa VII system where the Shoho began repairs and finished repairs the first week of March and then continued back to Kentares IV and arrived on March 20, 3066.

I am going to be updating my TO&E soon for these guys.  Suggestions for mechs, tanks, ASFs and infantry are welcome.  I am trying to make them more cost effective with standardized machines and more energy boats.  Also a Fortress class dropship (captured from the Third Benjamin Regulars) is being added to the unit as payment (plus cash) from Duke Dresari for the raid on Scheat.

For mechs I am trying to keep the movement curves 4/6/4 for the line lance.  5/8/5 or 6/9/6 for the flanker lance.  And  6/9/6 to 7/11/7 or faster for the scout lance.

Thanks and have a great day guys!

okay a faster recon/strike mech unit
what about 2 Rattlesnakes http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Rattlesnake
Which is basicly an upgraded Jenner  or 2 Jenner JR7-C
or if you can get them 2 Owens

Also look at getting some Firestarter FS9-O OmniMech, given it's politically charged history you might be able to get them, before everyone finds out the usefullness of it.

Fighters:
2 Eagles EGL-R6 backed by 2 Eagle EGL-R9 (to hunt dropships or strike targets)
"For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast, And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed:And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill, And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!"

Looks like it is time to go shopping.  I cannot believe that I missed what appears to be a great ASF.

Other news the WLF-1 is being converted to the WLF-2.  The salvaged WHM-6K is being upgraded to the 7M.

I am considering assigning the WVR-6M to replace the Gladiator.  I am trying to standardize my mechs somewhat.  I am hoping to run mostly energy weapons, most if not all have switched from SHS to DHS, and all machines being jump capable.  Maybe throw in some ECMs and BAPs.

Do you think that the Penetrator-4D and -6S would be any good.  The Flashman and Quickdraw I would like to replace.  I might switch the Wolfhound with one of the Crabs.

I am thinking about replacing the Mongoose and Dart with either the Rattlesnake (explain it as a Jenner variant) or replace them with Venoms.  I would also like to replace the Spider with a Specter.

How many techs and mechanics should I have on the pay roll?

I am trying to swap all my tanks to Fusion engines.  So I am going to get a replacement Pegasus.  I am also going to modify my Striker Light Tanks (drop the streaks and maybe put on a machine gun and half ton of ammo for it).

Current amount of cash is around $59 million.

These units have been sold:
Bulldog Medium Tank
Bulldog Medium Tank
Saracen Medium Hover Tank
Scimitar Medium Hover Tank
HBK-4G Hunchback
BNC-3E85 Banshee
LCT-3M Locust
STG-3G Stinger
VNL-K70 Von Luckner Heavy Tank
HGN-732 Highlander
AV1-0 Avatar

The sale of the above units has brought the treasury up to around $84 mil.

I like the Penetrators, especially the 6S with ecm. A nasty piece of work if used correctly.
With techs the larger the mech and the more complicated the technology on them the more you need a full tech team per mech.
Say 1 Tech and 2 astechs per mech.
With mechanics if you go the upgraded tech tanks same numbers to keep them at 100%.
Both the Venoms and the Rattlesnake are nasty mechs so much better than the Mongoose and Dart, and I always use 1 spector per lance for ecm but that is my personal preference. O0
I wish I could get a good grip on reality, then I would choke it.
Growing old is inevitable,
Growing up is optional.

Both the Venoms and the Rattlesnake are nasty mechs so much better than the Mongoose and Dart, and I always use 1 spector per lance for ecm but that is my personal preference. O0

Hey spakespinner,

I am keeping that in consideration.  I am getting some Eagles as ASFs.  As for the tanks I am going to try to get all fusion engined with some more lee-way to the support vehicles.  Any suggestions on support units I should get?

To be honest, most ICE can be made into multi-fuel usage. Whereas fusion power costs more and need a better mechanic for repairs. I'd rather run with a couple of Flatbed trucks, use a Paramour or two and support them with APCs all around. I'd eve run a BRV to help recovery tanks and up to medium mechs.

If you plan on having fusion engines my preference is fast hover's.
Fulcrum, regulator, bandits and other such nasties.
The Fulcrums have the added benefit of ecm.
With Bandits you have multiple variants for different missions.
With fusion engines you really cannot afford to lose them so fast cavalry are the best.
Also keep ammo to a minimum, as ammo explosions just ruin your day for expensive vehicles. O0

Light and heavy recovery vehicles.
Ammo carriers, coolant vehicles and maybe an MFB if you want to do repairs out in the field.

Jifty or Paramour, a few Flatbed Trucks, a 135-K Coolant Truck and some security Rock Rover half-tracks. You could also inquire about a Swiftwind, either standard fusion or ICE ( looses half ton cargo for swap ).

So I have hired a few new technicians.  I will be getting more support vehicles but am trying to keep the numbers low enough to transport all of the units on both the Overlord (just need to finalize my modifications to it) and the Fortress.

Right now I am keeping Beta lance like this
Beta Lance
CRB-27 Crab
QKD-4G Quickdraw
RJN101-A85 Raijin
CRB-27 Crab

And will be changing it to this later, unless I get some good suggestions otherwise.

Beta Lance
ANV-5M Anvil
STY-3C Starslayer
STY-3D Starslayer
RJN101-x Raijin

My Overlord is modified so that it can carry 6 ASFs, 16 mechs, 16 vehicles (heavy bays) and 4 platoons of infantry.  And a Fortress Class.  I am going to put one mech company per dropship and split my vehicles up between the two.  Perhaps activate another infantry company.

I would like some suggestions on how many support vehicles and how to organize them?

Looking at the Overlord
So you need 2 more fighters  (might I suggest 2 F-11-RR Cheetah (and then look to the F13 model for inspiration and add extra guns upgrade the armor and add a Hi-Res Imager  using up some of Extra Fuel )  Now you have 2 Recon Bird who can engage with 4  ER ML if needed.

and 4 mechs to fully staff out the Overlords bays
Did I miss a Command Lance?

Any reason why it has heavy vehicle bays not light?
I would be looking if me to convert them to light bays

I might be tempted to put more of my direct combat arm on the Overlord, and my support element on the Fortress

Another force you are missing are AA platforms and I hate to say it, but if I know you have a Fortess  out there I will be flying air recon looking for this to knock out your Arty Base.  Might I suggest a lance of Partisan Air Defense Tank 58 models (1 Lance Command and 3 Air Defense) for that annoying interlocked AA pattern.

A mod for your Myrmidon Medium Tanks, that we've have done here.  Drop the SRM6 for 2 SSRM2 after all if your are in SRM range in it you done something wrong.  Also on this while the Striker are a nice design, they aren't tracked so they can't go where the Myrmidon can, maybe look at a Hunter instead if you went with the LRM15 model you could give it 2 ML or upgrade to ER for "defense work".

Just some quick thoughts
"For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast, And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed:And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill, And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!"

So the Cheetahs are for fast scouts and interceptors.

I put in heavy vehicle bays so that they can hold light to heavy units.

Definitely adding 3 Partizan ADTs with 1 lance commander with C3 master.  They are still on Kentares and can  get some salvage from the KIV DMM.  I will look into replacing the Strikers with Hunters.
